Top Ten Tuesday – Christmas Cover Love

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is a Christmas Freebie so I decided it would be fun to share some festive Christmas-themed book covers that have caught my eye.  I’ve been having a little trouble getting into the Christmas spirit this year so this topic came along at just the right time.  Some of these caught my eye because they immediately made me think of my beloved Hallmark holiday films, which I actually haven’t started watching yet and really need to get going on.  Others caught my eye because they have dogs on them and are just adorable, and still others caught my eye because of their vibrant red and green color schemes.  And the Grinch of course is a perennial favorite primarily because of the nostalgia factor.  It’s also kind of funny that Debbie Macomber’s covers feature so prominently because as much as I adore the covers, I’ve never actually read one of her holiday novels. I’ve only read some from her Cedar Cove series.

(As a side note, apologies for being somewhat absent the past week on my own blog and when it comes to blog hopping.  A big work deadline that normally takes place on November 30th was extended to the end of this week because of COVID and we’re way behind because, even with the extension, we’ve had trouble getting what we need from our clients.  Hopefully I’ll be back on track once we get through the deadline).

Top Ten Tuesday – 10 Books I Want to Re-Read

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is Books I Want to Read Again.  This topic is a little challenging in the sense that I don’t typically re-read many books.  If I was going to re-read though, these titles would be at the top of my list.  I’d mainly be interested in revisiting them to see if I have the same or a greater appreciation of them a second time around or if the magic is gone after a single reading.

Top Ten Tuesday: 10 Things I’m Thankful for This Year

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is a Thanksgiving freebie, so I’m just going to keep it simple and share some things I’m thankful for this year. It’s not an especially bookish topic, but of course I am thankful for books so they are high on my list. 2020 is probably the most challenging year to be thankful for because of the pandemic and the continuing circus that is the Trump Administration, but I was still able to come up with a few things.

Before I share my list, I also want to wish everyone who is celebrating this week a safe and Happy Thanksgiving.

* * * * *

10 Things I’m Thankful for This Year

1. My Health and My Family’s Health.  In a year of uncertainty due to the pandemic, I feel very thankful that, thus far anyway, taking precautions against COVID has helped to keep me and all of my family members from getting it.

2. My Job.  I know I complain about it sometimes, but I truly am thankful not only that I have been able to keep my job AND work from home since March, but also that my company has not had to furlough anyone yet. I know it’s such a relief for everyone at the company, and in particular, parents who wanted to keep their kids in virtual school for safety reasons.

3. Books!  I’m always thankful for wonderful books to read, but this year, I have appreciated the distraction from reality more than ever before.

4. Hulu, Netflix, and Disney Plus.  Speaking of distractions, I’ve appreciated my favorite distractions so much this year. Between COVID and politics, I just haven’t wanted to turn on my TV at all this year so these streaming services have been lifesavers.

5. Biden/Harris.  Speaking of the dreaded P- word,  I’m so thankful that the current administration will soon be gone and that we have two wonderful people in line to lead us forward.  It’s the first time I’ve ever cried tears of joy when the winner of an election was announced, lol.

6. All of You! I’m also more thankful than ever for the bookish community. During this time where we’ve all been isolating and social distancing for so long, I have appreciated my online friendships so much.  And of course all of the fabulous book recs you give me all year long. 🙂

7. Quality time with my child (and with my furry children).  One of the bright spots about being home so much is that I’ve definitely spent a lot more time with my son than I would normally get to.  Not all of it is pleasant of course because he’s now a hormonal teenager going through puberty, but he really is an interesting kid and I’ve enjoying getting to have actual thought-provoking discussions with him.  It’s also been very nice to get to hang out with Ninja and Winston more.  I swear, work is so much more chill when you have a dog at your feet and a cat snuggling in your lap. 🙂

8. Scientists and Healthcare Professionals.  I’m so thankful for all of the men and women out there who are doing everything in their power to develop vaccines and treatments for COVID and for those healthcare workers on the front lines, risking their own lives to care for those who have gotten so ill from it.  What a truly extraordinary group of people.

9. Coffee, Tea, Fuzzy Socks, and Cozy Blankets.  This probably sounds silly, but I’m thankful for all of the small things in life that have brought me comfort and helped me to feel more relaxed this year.

10. Resilience and Innovation.  I know a lot of businesses have suffered because of the pandemic, but I’m so thankful for the spirit of resiliency and innovation that has kept so many businesses open as they’ve been able to find ways to adapt to a socially distanced world.  I think of the whiskey distilleries in my own state that switched over and started manufacturing hand sanitizer to help meet the overwhelming demand for it and all of the restaurants that have managed to switch over to curbside pickup, contactless deliveries, and outdoor seating.  It really is impressive.

Top Ten Tuesday – 10 Book Character Names That Would Also Make Great Pet Names

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is Characters I’d Name a Pet After (These could be your own pets (present or future), you could pick 10 different animals and tell us the name and animal type, or you could choose 10 names that would make fun cat names, etc. Put your own spin on this one!)

I’m pretty sure I’ve done a topic similar to this before, but it is a fun one so I decided to do it again, but with a slight twist.  I just finished reading Jenn Bennett’s latest novel, Chasing Lucky (which I’ll be reviewing later this week, by the way), and thought it would be fun to tie this post into that one by featuring Jenn Bennett character names that would be great names for pets.  I’m imagining these for puppies and kittens, but I think they could be pretty cool for other types of pets too.

10 Book Character Names That Would Also Make Great Pet Names

1. JOSIE, from Chasing Lucky

2. LUCKY, also (obviously, lol) from Chasing Lucky

4. THEODORA (“THEO”), from The Lady Rogue

5. HUCK, also from The Lady Rogue

6. LENNON, from Starry Eyes

7. ZORIE, also from Starry Eyes

8. BAILEY, from Alex Approximately

9. CADY, from Kindling the Moon

10. BIRDIE, from Serious Moonlight

Would you consider naming a pet any of these names?

Top Ten Tuesday – 10 Non-Bookish Interests I Have

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is actually not about books at all.  It’s more of a get to know the blogger post in that we’re sharing non-bookish interests that we have.  I don’t know that there are any big surprises here for anyone who has followed my blog for a while, but it’s a pretty accurate picture of what fills my time when I’m not reading, blogging or working.

* * * * *

10 Non-Bookish Interests I Have

  • Theater.  I have such a passion for the theater, Broadway musicals in particular, so it has killed me this year to not be able to catch any shows because of COVID.  Favorite shows and plays I’ve seen:  Hamilton, Wicked, Springsteen on Broadway, Les Miserables, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Lion King.
  • Disney.  And I mean all things Disney – the films, the characters, the theme parks, collecting stuffed animals, mugs, and enamel pins, just to name a few.  I also have a major soft spot for Eeyore that goes back to when I was a small child.
  • Travel.  This is a relatively new (i.e. in the last 10 years) passion for me.  I used to never go anywhere, but once I caught the travel bug, I now want to go EVERYWHERE.  This is another passion that has taken a hit because of the pandemic.
  • Hiking/Walking.  I used to do this a lot more often before I had a kid, but now that he’s older, I’d like to get back to it.  There’s nothing like a hike on a scenic trail.  So peaceful and such great exercise.
  • Politics.  I will freely admit that I’m completely burned out on this topic right now, but in normal times, when it doesn’t feel like the soul of our nation is on the line, I tend to be quite the political junkie.  2016-2020 may have killed this interest for the rest of my life, but we’ll see, lol.
  • Puzzles.  I put a jigsaw puzzle in my graphic but honestly I love all puzzles.  Jigsaw, crossword, logic puzzles, Sudoku, Rubik’s Cubes, etc.
  • Video Games.  And honestly, this should really just say video game, singular, because it’s Mario Kart Tour on my iPhone that I’ve been completely obsessed with the past few months.  It takes me back to the games I played when I was a kid and I’m really loving the sense of nostalgia right now.
  • Baking.  I can’t really say that I like to cook much overall, but man, I do love to bake a good dessert.  I’m all about the cookies, pies, and cakes. 🙂
  • Netflix, Hulu, Disney Plus & Chill.  I’ve found myself less and less willing to turn on the TV in recent months. There’s nothing but bad news and political ads everywhere I turn, so I’ve been regularly turning to my entertainment apps and watching anything and everything that will let me escape reality for a few hours.  The past weekend I fell down a Schitts Creek rabbit hole and devoured 4 seasons of the show.  If you haven’t seen it, it is hilarious!
  • Animals.  Whether it’s watching cute animal vids that put a smile on my face or watching my own furry family members engage in their silly antics, most animals are a constant source of joy for me.  Dogs, cats, and all sorts of domesticated animals of course, but then I also love giraffes, elephants, bears, and all of the big cats.  I will pass on the insects and reptiles though.

Well, that’s it for me.  Do we share any non-bookish interests?

Top Ten Tuesday – 10 Vampire Books You’ll Want to Sink Your Fangs Into

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. This week’s TTT topic is a Halloween Freebie. Last year I shared some of my favorite witchy read, so this year I thought it would be fun to share some vampire reads, some I’ve really enjoyed over the years and others I’ve heard great things about and hope to read in the future.

Top Ten Tuesday – Who Influences Me? 10 Books I Read Because of Blogger Recommendations

This week’s TTT topic is Books I Read Because Someone Recommended Them to Me (tell us who recommended them, if you want!).  I think posts like this are a lot of fun.  I love to look back through the books I’ve read and see which great reads I probably wouldn’t have read at all if not for the recommendations of bloggers.  I also love posts like this because it shows that any of us can be influencers, regardless of whether we are small bloggers, big bloggers, or somewhere in between bloggers.  When the right review makes it to the right reader, magic happens. 🙂  I’m also quite sure I could have easily done a Top 50 list here too because all of you have influenced my reading since I started blogging.  The 10 I picked today are just the first 10 that popped into my head.

Top Ten Tuesday – Super Long Book Titles That Are Sure to Grab Your Attention

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. This week’s TTT topic is Super Long Book Titles.  I remember doing a Top Ten Tuesday a few months ago where we shared some of our favorite one-word titles, so I think it’s fun to revisit book titles again this week but this time sharing the opposite — some of our favorite super long titles.  Now I’m sure there are many titles out there that are much longer than the ones I’ve selected, but these are some of my favorites and mainly so just because I find them so intriguing. Most of them are quite quirky, which immediately makes me wonder what the book is about and why such a long title was chosen.

This week’s TTT topic is Book Covers with Fall Colors/Vibes (or spring if you live in the southern hemisphere).  I did covers with fall colors the last time this topic rolled around so this time around, I thought it would be fun to share some covers that, at least in my mind anyway, have fall/spooky season vibes.  In some cases, it’s the color scheme, but in others it’s the content of the cover or its overall atmosphere.

In an unforgettable novel that traces a centuries-old curse to its source, beloved author Alice Hoffman unveils the story of Maria Owens, accused of witchcraft in Salem, and matriarch of a line of the amazing Owens women and men featured in Practical Magic and The Rules of Magic.

Under the care of Hannah Owens, Maria learns about the “Unnamed Arts.” Hannah recognizes that Maria has a gift and she teaches the girl all she knows. It is here that she learns her first important lesson: Always love someone who will love you back.

And it’s here that she learns the rules of magic and the lesson that she will carry with her for the rest of her life. Love is the only thing that matters.

Top Ten Tuesday – 10 Book Quotes That Resonate

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is Favorite Book Quotes (these could be quotes from books you love, or bookish quotes in general).  I’ve done a few quote posts in the past where I’ve listed my all time favorite quotes, so I’m tweaking the topic a bit.  Today I’m sharing quotes from some of my favorite 2020 reads that have really resonated with me.

* * * * *

10 Book Quotes That Resonate

  • “To make real friends you have to put yourself out there. Sometimes people will let you down, but you can’t let that stop you. If you get hurt, you just pick yourself up, dust off your feelings, and try again.”  ― Kristin Hannah, Firefly Lane

Quotes about friendship always resonate with me anyway, but this one really stuck with me just because it’s so true.

  • “Life is too short to be unhappy, to play it safe. To do what is expected of you rather than follow your heart”  ― Chanel Cleeton, Next Year in Havana

This is one that I agree with, although I know I’m often guilty of playing things too safe and always doing what’s expected of me.

  • “When you don’t know what to do for yourself, do something for somebody else.”  ― Katherine Center, How to Walk Away

I love this quote and it has really hit home with me during this pandemic. When I’m feeling a little lost or down and can’t shake the feeling, sometimes doing something for someone else is exactly what I need to get myself back into the right head space.

  • “You have to make peace with the past or you can never move into the future,”  ― Diane Chamberlain, Big Lies in a Small Town

This has definitely been my experience.

  • “An AK-47 in a white hand has more rights than a Black kid with Skittles.”  ― Kim Johnson, This Is My America

This quote broke my heart when I read it, but at the same time, it had me nodding my head because it unfortunately just feels so true right now. This quote speaks volumes as to why there is a Black Lives Matter movement.

  • “I wanted that November feeling, you know, when you suddenly remember the holidays are coming and your tummy gets all excited and it’s like being seven again.”
― Abbi Waxman, I Was Told It Would Get Easier

This quote jjust made me smile because for me, that November feeling is everything.  Although, to be perfectly honest, I start feeling it in October, lol.

  • “The thing about mental health was, you couldn’t take a course of antibiotics and be magically healed. Some people’s brains just thought too much or felt too much or hurt too much, and you had to stay on top of that.”  ― Talia Hibbert, Take a Hint, Dani Brown

This one really resonated with me as well, especially since so many people are struggling with their mental health even more than usual because of the pandemic.

  • “There’s some kind of peace that comes with knowing that for every person who is waiting to be found, there’s someone out there searching.”  ― Julie Murphy, Dumplin’

The cynic in me doesn’t want to believe this one, but the romantic in me tells cynical me to shut up and go sit in the corner because this quote is just so lovely to think about and hope it’s true.

  • “Relationships are a lot like houses: without a good foundation, they’ll crumble. When a light bulb goes out, you don’t buy a new house, you change the bulb. When the faucet drips, you don’t start mopping the floor before you fix the leak. In other words, no matter how much digging it takes, it’s important to get to the root of a problem.”  ― Christina Lauren, The Honey-Don’t List

I think pretty much anyone who has been in a relationship is probably reading this and nodding their head because it’s just so relatable.

  • “That was what I’d always loved about reading, what had driven me to write in the first place. That feeling that a new world was being spun like a spiderweb around you and you couldn’t move until the whole thing had revealed itself to you.”  ― Emily Henry, Beach Read

You knew I had to include a quote about the power of reading and books, right?
