Top Ten Tuesday – Books That Made Me Laugh Out Loud

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is Books That Made Me Laugh Out Loud.  At first I was going to skip this week’s topic since I know I’ve done at least one post recently about funny books, but then I decided that with this depressing pandemic lingering, you can never have too many recs when it comes to books that will make you laugh these days.  Some of the ones I’m sharing are truly LOL funny, while others have some serious moments mixed in with the humor.  Guaranteed that they’ll all leave you with a smile on your face though. 🙂

Top Ten Tuesday: Cover Love – Mardi Gras Style

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is Purple, Yellow, and/or Green Book Covers (in honor of Mardi Gras, which is today!).  I don’t usually do much for Mardi Gras honestly.  Back in college, we would have Mardi Gras themed parties and pre-COVID, my office would get a King Cake every year to mark the occasion. But that’s about it.  My favorite colors are purple, green, and yellow though so I’m happy to share some of my favorite book covers that feature those colors in honor of Mardi Gras.

Top Ten Tuesday – 10 Rom-Coms I’m Excited to Read in 2021

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is  a Valentine’s/Love Freebie so I thought it would be fun to share some rom-coms that are coming out in 2021 that I’m excited to read.  I’ve already read some great ones like Rachel Lynn Solomon’s The Ex Talk and Samantha Young’s Much Ado About You and I’m hoping my good luck streak with rom-coms will continue with the books I’m sharing today.  Some of these are givens of course, like the fourth Bromance book (the Russian is finally getting his own story!).  I’m also curious as to how humorous some of these really are.  I ran into a few last year that were advertised as rom-coms but they had a more serious vibe than I was expecting them to have.

10 Rom-Coms I’m Excited to Read in 2021

1. ISN’T IT BROMANTIC? by Lyssa Kay Adams

Summary:  With his passion for romance novels, it was only a matter of time before Vlad took up the pen to write a novel the Bromance Book Club would swoon over.

Elena Konnikova has lived her entire adult life in the shadows. As the daughter of a Russian journalist who mysteriously disappeared after speaking out against government corruption, she escaped danger the only way she knew how. She agreed to marry her childhood friend, Vladimir, and move to the United States, where he is a professional hockey player in Nashville.

Vlad, aka The Russian, thought he could be content with his marriage of convenience. But after four years, it’s become too difficult to continue in a one-sided relationship. He joined the Bromance Book Club to learn how to make his wife love him, but all he’s learned is that he deserves more. He’s ready to create his own sweeping romance–both on and off the page.

The Bros are unwilling to let Vlad forgo true love–and this time they’re not operating solo. They join forces with Vlad’s senior citizen neighbors, a group of meddling widows who call themselves The Loners. Just when things finally look promising, the danger from Elena’s past life intrudes, and the book club will face their first-ever life-or-death grand gesture as they race to a happy ever after.

2. THE DATING PLAN by Sara Desai

Even with a step-by-step plan, these fake fiances might accidentally fall for each other in this hilarious, heartfelt romantic comedy from the author of The Marriage Game.

Daisy Patel is a software engineer who understands lists and logic better than bosses and boyfriends. With her life all planned out, and no interest in love, the one thing she can’t give her family is the marriage they expect. Left with few options, she asks her childhood crush to be her decoy fiance.

Liam Murphy is a venture capitalist with something to prove. When he learns that his inheritance is contingent on being married, he realizes his best friend’s little sister has the perfect solution to his problem. A marriage of convenience will get Daisy’s matchmaking relatives off her back and fulfill the terms of his late grandfather’s will. If only he hadn’t broken her tender teenage heart nine years ago…

Sparks fly when Daisy and Liam go on a series of dates to legitimize their fake relationship. Too late, they realize that very little is convenient about their arrangement. History and chemistry aren’t about to follow the rules of this engagement.

3. ACT YOUR AGE, EVE BROWN by Talia Hibbert

Eve Brown is a certified hot mess. No matter how hard she strives to do right, her life always goes horribly wrong—so she’s given up trying. But when her personal brand of chaos ruins an expensive wedding (someone had to liberate those poor doves), her parents draw the line. It’s time for Eve to grow up and prove herself—even though she’s not entirely sure how…

Jacob Wayne is in control. Always. The bed and breakfast owner’s on a mission to dominate the hospitality industry—and he expects nothing less than perfection. So when a purple-haired tornado of a woman turns up out of the blue to interview for his open chef position, he tells her the brutal truth: not a chance in hell. Then she hits him with her car—supposedly by accident. Yeah, right.

Now his arm is broken, his B&B is understaffed, and the dangerously unpredictable Eve is fluttering around, trying to help. Before long, she’s infiltrated his work, his kitchen—and his spare bedroom. Jacob hates everything about it. Or rather, he should. Sunny, chaotic Eve is his natural-born nemesis, but the longer these two enemies spend in close quarters, the more their animosity turns into something else. Like Eve, the heat between them is impossible to ignore—and it’s melting Jacob’s frosty exterior.

4. FIRST COMES LIKE by Alisha Rai

The author of The Right Swipe and Girl Gone Viral returns with a story about finding love in all the wrong inboxes…

Beauty expert and influencer Jia Ahmed has her eye on the prize: conquering the internet today, the entire makeup industry tomorrow, and finally, finally proving herself to her big opinionated family. She has little time for love, and even less time for the men in her private messages—until the day a certain international superstar slides into her DMs, and she falls hard and fast. There’s just one wrinkle: he has no idea who she is.

The son of a powerful Bollywood family, soap opera star Dev Dixit is used to drama, but a strange woman who accuses him of wooing her online, well, that’s a new one. As much as he’d like to focus on his Hollywood fresh start, he can’t get Jia out of his head. Especially once he starts to suspect who might have used his famous name to catfish her…

When paparazzi blast their private business into the public eye, Dev is happy to engage in some friendly fake dating to calm the gossips and to dazzle her family. But as the whole world swoons over their relationship, Jia can’t help but wonder: Can an online romance-turned-offline-fauxmance ever become love in real life?

5. ONE LAST STOP by Casey McQuiston

For cynical twenty-three-year-old August, moving to New York City is supposed to prove her right: that things like magic and cinematic love stories don’t exist, and the only smart way to go through life is alone. She can’t imagine how waiting tables at a 24-hour pancake diner and moving in with too many weird roommates could possibly change that. And there’s certainly no chance of her subway commute being anything more than a daily trudge through boredom and electrical failures.

But then, there’s this gorgeous girl on the train.

Jane. Dazzling, charming, mysterious, impossible Jane. Jane with her rough edges and swoopy hair and soft smile, showing up in a leather jacket to save August’s day when she needed it most. August’s subway crush becomes the best part of her day, but pretty soon, she discovers there’s one big problem: Jane doesn’t just look like an old school punk rocker. She’s literally displaced in time from the 1970s, and August is going to have to use everything she tried to leave in her own past to help her. Maybe it’s time to start believing in some things, after all.

Casey McQuiston’s One Last Stop is a magical, sexy, big-hearted romance where the impossible becomes possible as August does everything in her power to save the girl lost in time.

6. THE ROAD TRIP by Beth O’Leary

Addie and her sister are about to embark on an epic road trip to a friend’s wedding in the north of Scotland. The playlist is all planned and the snacks are packed. But, not long after setting off, a car slams into the back of theirs. The driver is none other than Addie’s ex, Dylan, who she’s avoided since their traumatic break-up two years earlier.

Dylan and his best mate are heading to the wedding too, and they’ve totalled their car, so Addie has no choice but to offer them a ride. The car is soon jam-packed full of luggage and secrets, and with three hundred miles ahead of them, Dylan and Addie can’t avoid confronting the very messy history of their relationship…

Will they make it to the wedding on time? And, more importantly… is this really the end of the road for Addie and Dylan?

7. THE SOULMATE EQUATION by Christina Lauren

Single mom Jess Davis is a data and statistics wizard, but no amount of number crunching can convince her to step back into the dating world. Raised by her grandparents—who now help raise her seven-year-old daughter, Juno—Jess has been left behind too often to feel comfortable letting anyone in. After all, her father’s never been around, her hard-partying mother disappeared when she was six, and her ex decided he wasn’t “father material” before Juno was even born. Jess holds her loved ones close, but working constantly to stay afloat is hard…and lonely.

But then Jess hears about GeneticAlly, a buzzy new DNA-based matchmaking company that’s predicted to change dating forever. Finding a soulmate through DNA? The reliability of numbers: this Jess understands.

At least she thought she did, until her test shows an unheard-of 98% compatibility with another subject in the database: GeneticAlly’s founder, Dr. River Pena. This is one number she can’t wrap her head around, because she already knows Dr. Pena. The stuck-up, stubborn man is without a doubt not her soulmate. But GeneticAlly has a proposition: Get to know him and we’ll pay you. Jess—who is barely making ends meet—is in no position to turn it down, despite her skepticism about the project and her dislike for River. As the pair are dragged from one event to the next as the “Diamond” pairing that could make GeneticAlly a mint in stock prices, Jess begins to realize that there might be more to the scientist—and the science behind a soulmate—than she thought.

Funny, warm, and full of heart, The Soulmate Equation proves that the delicate balance between fate and choice can never be calculated.

8. IT HAPPENED ONE SUMMER by Tessa Bailey

Tessa Bailey is back with a Schitt’s Creek-inspired rom-com about a Hollywood “It Girl” who is cut off from her wealthy family and exiled to a small Pacific Northwest beach town… where she butts heads with a surly, sexy local who thinks she doesn’t belong.

Piper Bellinger is fashionable, influential, and her reputation as a wild child means the paparazzi are constantly on her heels. When too much champagne and an out-of-control rooftop party lands Piper in the slammer, her stepfather decides enough is enough. So he cuts her off, and sends Piper and her sister to learn some responsibility running their late father’s dive bar… in Washington. Piper hasn’t even been in Westport for five minutes when she meets big, bearded sea captain Brendan, who thinks she won’t last a week outside of Beverly Hills. So what if Piper can’t do math, and the idea of sleeping in a shabby apartment with bunk beds gives her hives. How bad could it really be? She’s determined to show her stepfather—and the hot, grumpy local—that she’s more than a pretty face.

Except it’s a small town and everywhere she turns, she bumps into Brendan. The fun-loving socialite and the gruff fisherman are polar opposites, but there’s an undeniable attraction simmering between them. Piper doesn’t want any distractions, especially feelings for a man who sails off into the sunset for weeks at a time. Yet as she reconnects with her past and begins to feel at home in Westport, Piper starts to wonder if the cold, glamorous life she knew is what she truly wants. LA is calling her name, but Brendan—and this town full of memories—may have already caught her heart.

9. TO SIR, WITH LOVE by Lauren Layne

Love Is Blind meets You’ve Got Mail in this laugh-out-loud romantic comedy following two thirty-somethings who meet on a blind dating app—only to realize that their online chemistry is nothing compared to their offline rivalry.

Perpetually cheerful and eager to please, Gracie Cooper strives to make the best out of every situation. So when her father dies just months after a lung cancer diagnosis, she sets aside her dreams of pursuing her passion for art to take over his Midtown Manhattan champagne shop. She soon finds out that the store’s profit margins are being squeezed perilously tight, and complicating matters further, a giant corporation headed by the impossibly handsome, but irritatingly arrogant Sebastian Andrews is proposing a buyout. But Gracie can’t bear the thought of throwing away her father’s dream like she did her own.

Overwhelmed and not wanting to admit to her friends or family that she’s having second thoughts about the shop, Gracie seeks advice and solace from someone she’s never met—the faceless “Sir”, with whom she connected on a blind dating app where matches get to know each other through messages and common interests before exchanging real names or photos.

But although Gracie finds herself slowly falling for Sir online, she has no idea she’s already met him in real life…and they can’t stand each other.

10. THE WEDDING GAME by Meghan Quinn

USA Today bestselling author Meghan Quinn’s latest bauble is the charming story of a crafting queen battling a jaded divorce lawyer on a wedding reality show.

Luna Rossi is a veritable crafting genius—she can bedazzle and bead so hard her Etsy site is one of the hottest in the world. So it’s only natural that Luna would convince her brother and his husband-to-be to compete on The Wedding Game, a “do-it-yourself” TV show, for the title of Top DIY Wedding Expert.

As a jaded divorce lawyer, Alec Baxter scoffs at weddings and romance. But when his recently engaged brother begs him to participate in The Wedding Game, Alec grudgingly picks up a glue gun and prepares for some family bonding.

Both fierce competitors, Luna and Alec clash on national TV as harsh words and glitter fly with abandon. But as they bicker over color swatches and mood boards, they find themselves fighting something else: their growing mutual attraction. While Luna is torn between family loyalty and her own feelings, Alec wonders if he might have been wrong about love and marriage all along…

Top Ten Tuesday – 10 Books Older Than Me That I Want to Read

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is  Books Written Before I Was Born.  This was actually a really hard topic for me because up until about ten years ago, I was very much into reading classics. I guess it was an extension of my college and grad school studies but I read most of the well known classics and then branched out and read a lot of more obscure titles as well.  That said, I was still able to come up with 10 titles that were published before I was born that I haven’t read yet but would like to at some point.

* * * * *

10 Books Older Than Me That I Want to Read

1. THE MURDER OF ROGER ACKROYD by Agatha Christie

Even though I selected this title, I’d actually really like to read everything by Agatha Christie. So far I’ve only read And Then There Were None and Murder on the Orient Express and I loved both of them.

2. I CAPTURE THE CASTLE by Dodie Smith

I’m always up for a good coming of age story and this one has received lots of high marks from reviewers I trust.

3. REBECCA by Daphne du Maurier

As much as I enjoy Gothic stories, I’m surprised I haven’t gotten around to this one yet.

4. THE GODFATHER by Mario Puzo

I actually haven’t read the books or seen the films.

5. THE HEART OF THE MATTER by Graham Greene

I took a course on 20th Century British Literature when I was in grad school and we read several of Greene’s novels.  I really enjoyed his writing style and read a couple more of his after I graduated.  Somehow I never got around to this one though, even though it’s probably one of his better known novels.

6. THE BIBLE

This might seem like an odd choice, but I’ve honestly never been a big Bible reader.  I remember reading a few passages here and there back when I used to attend Sunday School but that’s about it.  I remember wanting to take a course called “The Bible as Literature” when I was in college but it was so popular that in all four years, I was never able to get into the class.  One of these days I would like to do some kind of a Bible study, whether it’s as literature or a more traditional study.

7. INFERNO by Dante Alighieri

This is another where I’ve read various passages here and there, usually in order to understand references to it in other works of literature.  One of these days I would like to read it in its entirety, mainly just so I can say I did it, haha.

8. FRANNY AND ZOOEY by J.D. Salinger

I’ve re and re-read The Catcher in the Rye but somehow Franny and Zooey slipped through the cracks and I have yet to read it.

9. THE WOMAN IN WHITE by Wilkie Collins

Like Rebecca, I’m actually surprised I haven’t picked this one up yet since I usually love those 19th century gothic reads.  I remember this one being mentioned a lot in class and that all of my professors loved it so someday I’d like to read it.

10. DOCTOR ZHIVAGO by Boris Pasternak

I think the only reason I haven’t read this yet is because the subject matter sounds a bit daunting with its extensive focus on Russian history, particularly the Russian Revolution.

I’m actually excited to say that since I drafted this post, I’ve actually already read two of these authors, Alisha Rai and Camilla Bruce, both of whom I enjoyed immensely. 🙂

Top Ten Tuesday – My Reading and Blogging Goals for 2021

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is Resolutions/Hopes for 2021 (bookish or not!).  Since I haven’t yet posted my list of goals for reading and blogging, I’m going that route this week.  Some of these are new goals, while others are repeats of goals I had for 2020, either because I failed at them last year or because I did okay and want to continue to work on that same goal in the coming year.

(Edited to add – I will be striking through titles on this list as I read them  in order to keep track of my progress).

via GIPHY

My Reading and Blogging Goals for 2021

1)  My number one goal this year is a repeat goal from 2020 and that is to read more of the books I own.  I love ARCs of course, but I hate feeling like I’m neglecting books I’ve purchased.  I actually did pretty good with this goal last year, reading 53 of the books I had physically sitting on my shelves.  Where I didn’t do as well, however, were all of those ebooks I have sitting on my kindle.  They were basically out of sight, out of mind since I had all of those physical books staring me in the face.  To help better keep track of those ebooks, I have made myself a MASTER LIST of all of the books I own and want to read in 2021.  I’m not taking part in any challenges this year but am setting a goal for myself of reading 60 books I already own.

2)  This is also a repeat goal from 2020.  I really want to continue to only participate in blog tours where I have already requested a review book.  I did pretty well at this in 2020; I think I only ended up participating in one tour where I didn’t already have the book and I really cut down on the number of tours I did overall.  Hoping to stay on track in 2021.

3)  This is also an ongoing goal since my struggle to finish series continues.  In 2020, I had a list of 9 series I wanted to finish or get caught up in.  I finished 2 series, got caught up in 2 others, and read one book in another.  So yeah, not great.  For this year, I have 8 series that I want to finish and 3 new ones sitting on my shelf that I want to start.

Series I Want to Finish or Get Caught Up On:

  • The Nevernight Chronicle (1 book left)
  • An Ember in the Ashes (2 books left)
  • Arc of a Scythe (1 book left)
  • Red Winter (2 books left)
  • The Wrath and the Dawn (1 book left)
  • Legacy of Orisha (ongoing series, but I’m one book behind)
  • Cursebreakers (1 book left)
  • The Mortal Instruments (3 books left)

Series I Want to Start:

  • Daughter of Smoke and Bone
  • City of Brass
  • Legend

4)  This is also a repeat goal from last year.  I really want to work more on my Bookstagram account.  Sometimes I post every day of the week, but then disappear for weeks at a time.  I want to work on posting more consistently, taking better photos, and on interacting more on the platform.

5)  I also want to get better when it comes to re-reading books I love.  To keep it low pressure, I’m setting a personal goal of 1 re-read a month.  Below are the books I’m hoping to re-read.  Some are old favorites, while others are series books I need to re-read in order to facilitate goal #3 above.

  • The Night Circus
  • To Kill a Mockingbird
  • Rebecca
  • Children of Blood and Bone
  • Red Winter
  • The Chronicles of Narnia (7 books) – As of 12/24, I’ve re-read only the first book.
  • The Wrath and the Dawn

6) I am aiming to keep my Netgalley percentage at 85% or above in 2021.  I did pretty good with this goal in 2020, definitely better than in prior years, so I’m hoping I can continue to not request more than I can reasonably keep up with.

7)  In 2021, I really want to increase the amount of Nonfiction titles I read.  Most years I only read maybe 1 or 2 nonfiction books.  As with the re-reads, this year I’m setting a personal goal of 1 nonfiction book a month. Here’s a list of titles I’m hoping to read:

  • A Promised Land by Barack Obama
  • The Audacity of Hope by Barack Obama
  • My Own Words by Ruth Bader Ginsburg
  • The Truths We Hold: An American Journey by Kamala Harris
  • Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly
  • Hamilton by Ron Chernow (I started this in 2020 but haven’t finished it yet).
  • What Unites Us by Dan Rather
  • We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
  • Code Girls: The Untold Story of the American Women Code Breakers Who Helped Win WWII by Liza Mundy
  • D-Day Girls: The Spies Who Armed the Resistance, Sabotaged the Nazis, and Helped Win WWII by Sarah Rose
  • A Woman of No Importance: The Untold Story of the American Spy Who Helped Win WWII by Sonia Purnell
  • All Boys Aren’t Blue by George M. Johnson
  • Untamed by Glennon Doyle

8)  In 2021, I really want to work on being better organized. I’ve never been a super-organized person, but the pandemic and everything that has happened because of it (working from home, having my child at home for virtual schooling since last March, etc.) has really done a number on what few organizational skills I had, haha.  I need to get back on track in terms of my work-life balance, and in terms of my blog (consistent posts, a more consistent schedule for blog hopping, etc.).  It will be baby steps of course because I’m still working from home and we’re still short-staffed, and my child is still doing virtual school for the foreseeable future, but there will be some progress.

9)  This year I really want to have some guest posting on my blog.  One of my BFFs is also an avid reader and I’ve been talking to her about maybe doing some buddy reads/reviews with me or perhaps even sharing some reviews of her own. She reads a lot of mysteries and psychological thrillers so I think her recs would be a great addition since I haven’t been reading much in those areas of late.

10) Lastly, I’ve already mentioned that I’m not doing any challenges this year.  That’s not strictly true. I am doing the Goodreads Challenge and have set my goal at 150 books.  I read 173 books in 2020 but some of that was due to the pandemic and politics and never wanting to turn on my TV.  In hopes that 2021 won’t be a repeat, I’m sticking with the 150.  It’s challenging but definitely doable, especially based on all of my reading goals above.

This week’s TTT topic is Most Anticipated Releases for the First Half of 2021.  There are lots of new releases I’m excited about coming out the first half of the year, so the only challenge here was to narrow my list down to just ten.  It seems like almost all of my favorite authors have books coming out this spring.  As you’ll see from my list, contemporaries and particularly rom-coms are still factoring very high on my priority list, although historical fiction and a little fantasy squeaked in there with Chanel Cleeton, Kristin Hannah and Nicole Glover.

Top Ten Tuesday – Ten of My Favorite Reads from 2020

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is Favorite Books of 2020.  It was hard to pick just ten favorite books because as bad as 2020 was overall, it was actually a really great reading year for me.  As of the moment I’m sitting here drafting this post, I’ve read 172 books this year, the most I’ve ever read, and looking through my Goodreads shelves, most of those reads were 3 stars and above so yay!  I did have more DNFs than ever before, which I also consider a win because I’m finally getting better at just saying no to books that aren’t working for me.  All of that said, I’m sharing 14 of my favorite reads from this year.  All of the books below are a combination of 2020 releases and older releases since one of my big goals this year was to read more of the older books that have been sitting neglected on my bookshelves. I did pretty well with that goal as well and will have a second half of 2020 Beat the Backlist wrap up coming later this week to share all of the older books I’ve read in 2020.

Anyway, back to my favorites of the year…I rated all of these 4.5 or 5 stars and as you can see, I had winners from a variety of genres.  Light, fluffy, and romantic books were my favorites overall, but I still had some darker and more atmospheric reads in there too. I’d highly recommend any of these titles to someone looking for a read they won’t be able to put down.

My Favorite Reads from 2020

(In no particular order)

1. THIS IS MY AMERICA by Kim Johnson – most powerful book I read this year.

2. BEACH READ by Emily Henry  – the book whose cover made me think it would be a light and fluffy read but ended up being so much more.

3. BLACKTOP WASTELAND by S.A. Cosby  – My favorite crime novel of the year. It’s so action-packed that it reads like The Fast and the Furious.

4. CRAZY STUPID BROMANCE by Lyssa Kay Adams  – I went back and forth trying to decide which Bromance book was my favorite this year since I also read Undercover Bromance and loved them both. Going with this one mainly because of Beefcake the cat, haha.

5. TAKE A HINT, DANI BROWN by Talia Hibbert  –  This one wins for most adorable couple.  I read this months ago and still smile every time I think about them.

6. JUST OUR LUCK by Julia Walton  – A heartwarming coming of age story about overcoming anxiety and finding friendship and love.  This was one of my final reads of 2020 and it was just such a lovely note to end the year on.

7. THE LIONS OF FIFTH AVENUE by Fiona Davis  –  Fiona Davis’ novels never disappoint because they combine two of my favorite things, historical fiction and NYC iconic buildings.  This one features the New York Public LIbrary and a fantastic mystery to boot.

8. MAGIC LESSONS by Alice Hoffman  –  It’s Alice Hoffman and it’s a prequel to Practical Magic that shows the origins of the Owens bloodline and the infamous curse.  What else do I need to say?  It’s glorious!

9. THE ONCE AND FUTURE WITCHES by Alix E. Harrow  –  While nothing can top Alice Hoffman’s witchy series (see above), my second favorite witchy read of 2020 was this gorgeous and atmospheric read by Alix E. Harrow.  I also read and loved her book Ten Thousand Doors of January this year and look forward to reading more from her.

10. ONE DAY IN DECEMBER by Josie Silver  –  This was actually one of my very first reads of the year and the beautiful and emotional story has just stuck with me all the way through 2020.

11. THE SIMPLE WILD by K.A. Tucker  – The older book that I could kick my own butt for not reading it sooner.  By far, my favorite romance of the year.  I loved it so much that the sequel and the holiday novella are queued up on my kindle now to read in January.

12.  SORCERY OF THORNS by Margaret Rogerson  –  Another gorgeous story that I could kick my butt for ignoring for so long.  This is a fantasy novel that actually lives up to all of the hype, plus it’s set in libraries and features magical books. What’s not to love?  Another huge bonus?  It’s a standalone, which is heaven for people like me who struggle with series.

13.  THE SUN DOWN MOTEL by Simone St. James  –  I don’t usually read books classified as horror but something about this one just called to me and I’m so glad I answered the call.  It is the creepiest, most atmospheric book I read all year and I loved every page of it.  It was my first time reading Simone St. James and I loved it so much that I recently picked up a copy of The Broken Girls so that I can experience more of her gorgeous writing.

14. WHAT YOU WISH FOR by Katherine Center  – This is my third book from Katherine Center and she is quickly becoming one of my favorite contemporary authors.  I have fallen in love with the characters in every book so far, especially with the protagonist in this book, who is a school librarian.
