About Me

me

Hi, I'm Suzanne. Proofreader by day, book blogger by night, devourer of books 24/7. My reading tastes: Basically you name it, I probably like it. I read a lot of contemporary and historical, both adult and YA, and I've also been enjoying more and more fantasy lately. Hobbies include: buying and hoarding of books, rambling about books to anyone who will listen, and trying to recommend books to my family and friends whether they are readers or not - because seriously, how can you not love to read books?

I’m still deciding but in the meantime, here are the books I chose for June, which I just realized I had never shared with you. Oops!

The Hotel Nantucket by Elin Hilderbrand, who always delivers with the magnificent beach reads, and The Lies I Tell by Julie Clark, who I’ve never read before but this one promises to be a juicy thriller.

Review: The Friendship Pact by Jill Shalvis. Th Review: The Friendship Pact by Jill Shalvis.

This is the second book in the Sunrise Cove series, but so far there’s no crossover between characters so the first two books work great as standalones.

Tae Holmes is an event planner. When we meet her, she is hosting her first big fundraiser for an adventure company for athletes with disabilities and for wounded warriors.

Tae is sharp, savvy, and on top of things, although the weather has put a damper on the event’s turnout. Beyond the weather disruption, some other things happen that throw Tae off kilter: 1) A donor approaches her to chat about seeing her dad recently, which is impossible because Tae has never even met her dad because he died before she was born, and 2) her old friend & one-night stand from high school, Riggs Copeland, shows up. It turns out Riggs is part owner of the adventure company.

Tae’s brain is spinning with questions about her dad and seeing Riggs for the first time since high school just adds to her chaotic thoughts, especially when it’s clear that the sparks between them are still very much there.

I love a good second chance romance so I was hooked from the very first scenes between Tae and Riggs. Both characters were so likeable but with complicated pasts that made them reluctant to become involved with one another. Riggs is especially reluctant because he’s not staying in Lake Tahoe long-term, which is where the “friendship pact” came into play. But is it really possible for two people who are obviously so good together and so good for each other to just be friends?

There is quite a bit of personal drama as well, revolving around the questions Tae now has about her dad. Was the donor mistaken or has her mom not been honest with her? If not, why? This aspect of the story kept me just as captivated as the romance did. I adored the close relationship between Tae & her mom and the thought that something might tear them apart had me on the edge of my seat!

I devoured this book in a couple of sittings and highly recommend it if you’re for vacation/beach reads.

QOTD: Are you a fan of Gilmore Girls or Hallmark m QOTD: Are you a fan of Gilmore Girls or Hallmark movies?

Review: AS SEEN ON TV by Meredith Schorr.

I was drawn to Meredith Schorr’s new novel As Seen on TV as soon as I saw the comparisons to Hallmark Channel movies and to the Gilmore Girls, two of my favorite things.

Adi Gellar works as a freelance journalist in NYC. She’s hoping to land a permanent writing position at an online magazine, but so far that hasn’t panned out. That frustration, coupled with rising rents in her apartment building and a serious lack of good dating prospects has Adi feeling jaded about big city life.

When the opportunity arises for her to temporarily relocate to the small town of Pleasant Hollow to write a story about a real-life Hallmark-like small town, Adi can’t resist. And maybe if she’s lucky, she’ll not only write a story good enough to land her a permanent writing position, but she’ll also find someone worth dating because isn’t that what always happens in those small town Hallmark romances?

I loved Adi and sympathized with everything she was up against in NYC, but, man did I get a laugh out of what happens when she rolls up in this small town with her Hallmark expectations. Not only is there nothing charming about Pleasant Hollow; the people aren’t even nice! Then she meets Finn, a nice guy in Pleasant Hollow that she considers to be excellent boyfriend material only to learn he actually lives in NYC. Haha!

It’s such a reality check for Adi as one by one, all of her assumptions about idyllic small town life are turned upside down.

Adi, although flustered by how completely wrong she has been, is smart and resourceful and I enjoyed watching her regroup in order to try to meet her writing deadline.

The relationships in this book were a huge draw for me, not only the amazing chemistry between Adi and Finn, but we also get to see how close Adi is with her mom. I adored their scenes together.

If you’re in the mood for a charming, feel good romance that has a fresh take on the small town romance trope, you’re going to want to check out As Seen on TV.

Mine was Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez.

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Part of Your World is a contemporary romance that follows two people from very different worlds who, in spite of all their differences, are amazing together. If they want to be together, however, hard choices will need to be made.

Alexis is an ER doctor who comes from a long line of world-renowned surgeons, and who is expected to carry on the family tradition. Her family puts a lot of pressure on her to follow in their footsteps even though she’s very happy doing what she does.

Daniel is a carpenter and a leader in his community. He’s smart, kind, helpful, and he’s also easy on the eyes. He is also taking care of a baby goat named Chloe who prances around in pajamas. 😍

I was immediately hooked by the unlikely meet cute that takes place in a ditch when Alexis is driving through a small town, runs her car off the road and is rescued by Daniel. They meet again when Alexis stops for a bite to eat before continuing her drive home. Sparks immediately fly between them and they want to see more of each other.

When she meets Daniel and the tight knit community he lives in, she is not only attracted to Daniel, but she also experiences a sense of joy and freedom she never has before. The problem? They just don’t really fit in each other’s worlds. Her parents would never see Daniel as an acceptable relationship choice. Can Alexis stand up to her parents or are she and Daniel doomed?

This was my first time reading an Abby Jimenez novel and I loved everything about it. I was so invested in Alexis and Daniel and rooting for them to find a way to be together. The character development, particularly with Alexis, was perfection, and I also really liked the secondary characters and the small town where Daniel lived. The way Jimenez portrays it had me wanting to visit and meet everyone.

I also loved the blend of the romance with some heavier topics like emotional abuse as Alexis has to deal with the unreasonable pressure her family puts on her.

I highly recommend Part of Your World to anyone who enjoys a heartwarming, opposites-attract romance. ❤️

Review: THE LOVE CONNECTION by Denise Williams. Review: THE LOVE CONNECTION by Denise Williams.
.
You wouldn’t think romance could blossom within the confines of an airport, but in her new novella The Love Connection, part of her Airport Novellas series, Denise Williams not only convinces me that love in an airport is possible, but that it can also be quite a magical experience.

Ollie owns a pet grooming salon in a busy airport. Fresh out of a bad relationship where her ex cheated on her, Ollie has no interest in putting herself out there again and instead focuses her energy into expanding her business. That said, she does enjoy watching the eye candy in a suit that passes through the terminal adjacent to her shop every week.

Said eye candy is named Bennett, risk assessor by day historical romance writer by night. Although Ollie is quite content to watch sexy Bennett from afar, a runaway soap-covered dog from her salon has other ideas, creating the most adorable meet-cute between Ollie and Bennett.

Even though this is a novella rather than a full length novel, Williams does a phenomenal job of giving the reader fantastic character development, a realistic evolution of the romantic relationship, witty banter, and super cute airport dates as Ollie and Bennett get to know one another. She also thoughtfully explores the challenges of long distance relationships as well as the challenges of moving on after being hurt.

I did want more and was sad when I reached the last page but that’s only because I adored both Ollie and Bennett and thought they were so perfect for one another. ❤️

If you’re looking for a fun, fresh, sexy read, be sure to check out The Love Connection.

Review: ADULT ASSEMBLY REQUIRED by Abbi Waxman. . Review: ADULT ASSEMBLY REQUIRED by Abbi Waxman.
.
Abbi Waxman is one of my favorites so I’m thrilled to report that her new novel, Adult Assembly Required is a fabulous read, full of wonderful characters, a heartfelt storyline, and of course plenty of Waxman's signature humor.
.
The story follows Laura Costello who, after a car accident that nearly cost her her life, has moved from NYC to L.A. in search of a fresh start. Against her parents' wishes, she has broken off her engagement and has applied to graduate school to become a physical therapist. Laura's journey hits a speed bump as soon as she arrives in L.A., however, when the apartment building she is staying at catches fire, leaving her homeless. She wanders into a bookstore where she meets Polly, who practically adopts her, taking her to the boarding house where she lives because she knows a room just came available. Laura has no idea how much this chance encounter is going to change her life!

I don't want to spoil anything so I'm just going to say this book is the perfect read for you if you enjoy any of the following:

1. Sympathetic, loveable characters who, with the help of good friends, overcome adversity to find their own path forward and realize they're stronger than they ever thought possible.

2. Found Families - The residents of Maggie's boarding house, along with Polly and Nina from the bookstore, become the family and support system that Laura has never had. This hilarious crew has her back no matter what but also occasionally gives her the push she needs to get out of her comfort zone.

3. Cameos galore! If you're a Waxman fan, you'll immediately recognize that Nina and Polly are from The Bookish Life of Nina Hill, and there are also cameos from The Garden of Small Beginnings when Laura goes on a gardening date with her neighbor Bob and meets Edward, Lily, and Lily's daughter, Claire. It was so much fun to revisit all of these beloved characters!

4. Slow burn romances. The romance takes a backseat to Laura's personal journey, but it's still there and it's adorable. 😊

Review - SET ON YOU by Amy Lea. . Happy Friday ev Review - SET ON YOU by Amy Lea.
.
Happy Friday everyone! If you’re looking for a fun and sexy contemporary romance to kick off your weekend reading, look no further than SET ON YOU. It’s Amy Lea’s debut and it is a delight!
.
It follows Crystal Chen, a biracial curvy fitness influencer. Crystal has built a huge social media following by sharing her own fitness journey and by being supportive to others who aren’t a size zero but who are also looking to improve their overall fitness. For Crystal, the gym is her happy place but it’s not about losing weight. It’s about being strong and healthy, the best version of her self.
.
I really loved Crystal. She’s so inspirational, but she’s also just such a well drawn, realistic and relatable character. She’s also hilarious to watch when the new guy at the gym, sexy firefighter Scott Ritchie, seems to be going out of his way to annoy her. He does things that get her so flustered, to the extent that she declares him her “gym nemesis” and it’s an all out workout war between them.
.
There’s a definite rivals to lovers vibe and as much as I loved watching the sparks fly when they’re in rivals mode, I enjoyed it even more as they got to know each other better. They have amazing chemistry and i was so thrilled when we finally got some steamy scenes between them.
.
Aside from the fun and sexy moments, I also really enjoyed the social media aspect of Crystal’s journey - her recording content, dealing with trolls, and especially her discussing the impact online haters can have on a person’s fitness journey and overall self esteem.
.
SET ON YOU is the perfect balance of delivering an important message while also being a sexy and entertaining delight!

Review - BOOK LOVERS by Emily Henry. I love Emil Review - BOOK LOVERS by Emily Henry.

I love Emily Henry’s books, but I think her latest novel Book Lovers may be my new favorite.
.
I love bookish characters and the enemies-to-lovers romance trope and Henry gave me both. The story follows Nora Stephens, a literary agent with a take no prisoners attitude when it comes to her clients. This has earned her the nickname "Shark" among her peers. In the opening pages, we get to watch Nora butt heads with a rival in the publishing industry, the handsome but broody editor, Charlie Lastra. Sparks fly between them and even though Nora swears she hates the guy, she can't seem to get Charlie off her mind. Things get very interesting, to say the least, when the two of them unexpectedly end up in the tiny town of Sunshine Falls, NC at the same time.
.
I loved Nora because she's such a complex character. She may be a shark on the job, but when it comes to her younger sister, Libby, Nora's softer side comes out. They lost their mom when they were young and so Nora has practically raised Libby. You can just tell Nora and Libby have been through a lot together and their close bond is very moving to witness. Libby and a much needed girls' trip before baby number 3 arrives is the reason why Nora is in Sunshine Falls, and as part of their trip, Libby has created a “bucket list” of sorts for her and Nora to complete – wear flannel, date a local, go skinny dipping, etc. Many entertaining moments ensue as the list forces Nora way outside of her comfort zone.
.
The sisterly bond was everything for me, but the romantic element wasn't too shabby either, particularly if you enjoy your enemies to lovers with a side of slow burn, which I very much do! It turns out that Charlie is actually from Sunshine Falls and is home dealing with some complicated family issues. I really loved watching Nora discover there’s a lot more to Charlie than his handsome broodiness as their relationship evolved.
.
Book Lovers made me laugh, it made me cry, and it left me with a big smile on my face. I also devoured it in a day so if you’re looking for a beach read, this is a perfect choice!
