Top Ten Tuesday – Reading Fails: 10 Books I Totally Planned to Read This Year But Probably Won’t
Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!
This week’s TTT topic is another Freebie. Since we’re fast approaching the end of the year, I’ve been reflecting on the books I’ve read this year, and even more so, on the books I had every intention of reading this year but somehow still didn’t get to. I know I still have a few weeks left to try to make this list happen but with the holidays and the January 2020 ARCs I’m starting to work my way through, I just don’t think these reads are going to happen before the end of 2019. I definitely still plan to read all of them though so I’m sure these titles will end up as part of my backlist challenge next year. While I was compiling this list, I also did a little “spring” cleaning and purged about 40 titles from my Goodreads “Want to Read” Shelf because I’ve just completely lost interest in them. I’m sure it won’t be long before I find 40 more to add in their places, but it felt good to finally get rid of some titles that I’ve been scrolling past for 4-5 years.

Question: Do you have any books you were determined to read this year but somehow still haven’t?
Great list! I love The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet, Gods of Jade and Shadow and Circe – I hope you enjoy them when you get to them. I’d really like to try and get to Ninth House this year, too, but I don’t know if I will, and I’d really like to conquer The Priory of the Orange Tree this month!
The Priory of the Orange Tree is yet another I totally meant to read this year.
I’ll make a pitch for Daughter of Smoke and Bone, on audio. It’s an extraordinary, fantastical story and series.
I will definitely keep that in mind now that I have finally learned to appreciate audio books. 🙂
I have Circe out from the library right now, so hopefully that means I’ll get to it before the end of the year!
Good luck!
I’m me-too-ing on Uprooted. Don’t miss Small Angry Planet. Circe is good, too.
Small Angry Planet is one I definitely plan to read. It has been high on my must-read list ever since I read so many great blogger reviews for it.
About half of these books are on my list, but the number one I wanted to get to and didn’t was Circe. I am hoping to get to it next year!
Good luck getting to them. 🙂
Same here. I read Song of Achilles earlier this year and loved the author’s writing style so I’m eager to read more from her.
Were on the same wavelength because I picked the same topic😁 Ninth House!! I didn’t put it on my list because I really want to read it in the next few weeks. So many unread books!!😭
I hope you’re able to get to Ninth House in the next couple of weeks!
I have a couple books in common with you haha. I did read Aurora Rising, but Ninth House and Circe are going on next year’s TBR.
Here’s my TTT 🙂
https://thewordyhabitat.wordpress.com/2019/12/10/top-10-romance-reads-of-2019/
I’m so bummed I wasn’t able to fit all three of those in, but yep, definitely staying on the 2020 TBR.
Congrats on cleaning house. The only thing more freeing than reading a book off your TBR…is fast-track deleting it. Love that rush! Just knowing you probably spared yourself an unsatisfying span of hours* is an instant pick me up. (*even if you change your mind later, it’ll be out of renewed excitement and not a sense of obligation)
Thanks!
If only we all had more time to read, eh? 🙂
My TTT.
Right? LOL!
As readers it seems like our reading lists keep growing and growing and it takes a while to get to all those titles. Kudos to you for the December purge. I’m doing better with catching up with my reading, but have a long way to go. Hugs, RO
I still have a long way to go too, lol.
I really never know when I’m going to get to a book, so I don’t have a set list but there are definitely a lot of books I want to read in general and still haven’t gotten to. I love Daughter of Smoke and Bone, so I hope you enjoy that when you read it. I also want to read Aurora Rising, All Systems Red, and Sorcery of Thorns (though I own this one at least!)
-Lauren
Someone else just recommended trying Daughter of Smoke and Bone on audio so I might go that route.
Ninth Housenis one I’d like to read but it won’t happen before the end of the year, too many holds at my library. It will be weeks before I can pick up my copy.
Yes, library holds can be the worst for delaying reading progress. I have several like that too.
I have a ton of books I wanted to read, but didn’t. You’re not alone! Hopefully you get to some of these in 2020.
My TTT.
Thanks! Oh and I just tried to comment on your blog but I’m getting a “Blog Token Not Found” message in the comment box.
OMG I had so many reading fails this year. Considering that my reading goal was fifty books and I’ve read less than 20. Whoopsie.
Oops! Hopefully you’ll have better luck in 2020. 🙂
Yep. It’s official – we all need a reading clone! Or is it a clone that does the chores and goes out to work, leaving us with time to read as MUCH as we want? Absolutely…
Oooh, I think you’re onto something with that clone that does all of the chores and goes to work so we can stay home and read. I could totally go for that, haha.
I only had one of these on my TBR, Aurora Rising. I read it and it was so good! The ending had me crying. It’s not the worst to be late, because if you wait long enough, then maybe you can binge read all the books in the series.
I’m really glad to hear you enjoyed Aurora Rising so much. It will be high priority for me next year, especially since book 2 comes out in May.
Several of these are on my TBR, but the only one I got to is Sorcery of Thorns. Oh well!
Yep, onto the 2020 TBR they all go, lol.
I had Circe on my tbr this year and didn’t get to it either. Maybe next year. 😉
My TTT
Same. I’m determined to get to it next year.
Yes ): I ALWAYS read at least 1 jim butcher book a year and totally forgot to this year, so it’s on my to do list hopefully early 2020 and maybe i’ll add a couple of more to the list.
I hope you get to him next year!
Sorcery of Thorns is one that I really want to get to and I didn’t… so maybe it is something for early 2020? Circe is amazing though, so I hope you will be able to love the book whenever you get around to it. A lot of these are ones I want to read… Aurora Rising, Becky Chambers books, Martha Wells books… Ninth House… etc. 😛
I’m really bummed I don’t have time to fit in Circe. I read Song of Achilles earlier this year and thought it was wonderful so I’m looking forward to read more of Miller’s books.
Ooh, some of my favourites from this and last year are on your list! I hope that you do get to these reads eventually because they’re so awesome 😍 I also got my first book by Becky Chambers earlier this month and I’m so excited to finally read it because I don’t think I’ve heard anyone say anything bad about her books until now. Great list, Suzanne!
Thank you!
You have some good ones on your list! Uprooted is one of my all time favorite books <3 But Sorcery of Thorns and Aurora Rising are also good! I hope you like them if you get to them!
Thanks, I hope so too. 🙂
Ooh A Dance with Dragons. Can’t wait to see what you think of THAT one! 🙂 And Long Way is one of my absolute favorite books- hope you love it (and Murderbot too).
I’m really hoping to get to at least Long Way and Murderbot in January. I may go the audio route on A Dance with Dragons. Otherwise George R.R. Martin might come out with the next book before I finally get around to it.
Oh my, oh my! This list is full of books that are so high on my TBR and so high on my favorites list! Do you plan to move some of the books over to next year?
Oh yeah, they are all moving over to my 2020 TBR. I definitely still want to read all of them.
Aurora, Ninth House, Sorcery …you are KILLING me Suzanne!!! They are among my favorites this year 😉
I’m definitely making time for them in early 2020. I remember how glowing your reviews were for both of those.
All the books 😂 I think the biggest one for me has been Darkdawn. I’m still so eager to read it but just haven’t found the time and trying to read as many review copies as possible before the end of the year. Daughter of Smoke and Bone is such a beautiful read, I hope you can get to that one soonish, I’d love to see what you think of it!
Oh gosh, I still need to read the second book in the Nevernight series. I forgot all about that one, lol.
Oh man, I have a heck of a lot more than ten that I didn’t get to. But, I still plan to fit them in where I can even as I’ll probably have a whole new list of 2020 books that I miss out on, too. LOL
I did manage to get to Aurora Rising and All Systems Red from your list and loved them.
Here’s hoping we both get to our 2019 backlist, Suzanne!
Oh, I have way more than 10 as well. These are just the ten I regret not getting to the most, lol.
3, 6, and 10. This is a brilliant idea for a TTT Suzanne and a great reminder of books I’d forgotton about completely.
Thanks. 🙂
