Top Ten Tuesday – Reading Fails: 10 Books I Totally Planned to Read This Year But Probably Won’t

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is another Freebie.  Since we’re fast approaching the end of the year, I’ve been reflecting on the books I’ve read this year, and even more so, on the books I had every intention of reading this year but somehow still didn’t get to.  I know I still have a few weeks left to try to make this list happen but with the holidays and the January 2020 ARCs I’m starting to work my way through, I just don’t think these reads are going to happen before the end of 2019.  I definitely still plan to read all of them though so I’m sure these titles will end up as part of my backlist challenge next year.  While I was compiling this list, I also did a little “spring” cleaning and purged about 40 titles from my Goodreads “Want to Read” Shelf because I’ve just completely lost interest in them.  I’m sure it won’t be long before I find 40 more to add in their places, but it felt good to finally get rid of some titles that I’ve been scrolling past for 4-5 years.

Small Angry Planet is one I definitely plan to read. It has been high on my must-read list ever since I read so many great blogger reviews for it.

Congrats on cleaning house. The only thing more freeing than reading a book off your TBR…is fast-track deleting it. Love that rush! Just knowing you probably spared yourself an unsatisfying span of hours* is an instant pick me up. (*even if you change your mind later, it’ll be out of renewed excitement and not a sense of obligation)

As readers it seems like our reading lists keep growing and growing and it takes a while to get to all those titles. Kudos to you for the December purge. I’m doing better with catching up with my reading, but have a long way to go. Hugs, RO

I really never know when I’m going to get to a book, so I don’t have a set list but there are definitely a lot of books I want to read in general and still haven’t gotten to. I love Daughter of Smoke and Bone, so I hope you enjoy that when you read it. I also want to read Aurora Rising, All Systems Red, and Sorcery of Thorns (though I own this one at least!)

Yep. It’s official – we all need a reading clone! Or is it a clone that does the chores and goes out to work, leaving us with time to read as MUCH as we want? Absolutely…

      Suzanne says:

Oooh, I think you’re onto something with that clone that does all of the chores and goes to work so we can stay home and read. I could totally go for that, haha.

I only had one of these on my TBR, Aurora Rising. I read it and it was so good! The ending had me crying. It’s not the worst to be late, because if you wait long enough, then maybe you can binge read all the books in the series.

I’m really glad to hear you enjoyed Aurora Rising so much. It will be high priority for me next year, especially since book 2 comes out in May.

Sorcery of Thorns is one that I really want to get to and I didn’t… so maybe it is something for early 2020? Circe is amazing though, so I hope you will be able to love the book whenever you get around to it. A lot of these are ones I want to read… Aurora Rising, Becky Chambers books, Martha Wells books… Ninth House… etc. 😛

I’m really bummed I don’t have time to fit in Circe. I read Song of Achilles earlier this year and thought it was wonderful so I’m looking forward to read more of Miller’s books.

Ooh, some of my favourites from this and last year are on your list! I hope that you do get to these reads eventually because they’re so awesome 😍 I also got my first book by Becky Chambers earlier this month and I’m so excited to finally read it because I don’t think I’ve heard anyone say anything bad about her books until now. Great list, Suzanne!

I’m really hoping to get to at least Long Way and Murderbot in January. I may go the audio route on A Dance with Dragons. Otherwise George R.R. Martin might come out with the next book before I finally get around to it.

All the books 😂 I think the biggest one for me has been Darkdawn. I’m still so eager to read it but just haven’t found the time and trying to read as many review copies as possible before the end of the year. Daughter of Smoke and Bone is such a beautiful read, I hope you can get to that one soonish, I’d love to see what you think of it!

Oh man, I have a heck of a lot more than ten that I didn’t get to. But, I still plan to fit them in where I can even as I’ll probably have a whole new list of 2020 books that I miss out on, too. LOL
I did manage to get to Aurora Rising and All Systems Red from your list and loved them.

Here’s hoping we both get to our 2019 backlist, Suzanne!
