Can’t Wait Wednesday – Spotlight on LITTLE BIG LOVE by Katy Regan

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, which encourages fellow bloggers to spotlight upcoming releases that we’re excited about.  It is a meme that I have  loved participating in for over a year now, but as Jill is no longer actively posting, from now on I’ll just be linking to Can’t Wait Wednesday, hosted by Tressa, which is a spinoff of the original WoW meme.

My selection for this week is LIttle Big Love by Katy Regan and I have to admit that the main reason I’m excited about it is the comparison in the blurb to About a Boy and Parenthood, which are two of my favorites. Parenthood is one of those shows that gave me all the feels and that I could only watch with a box of tissues nearby because I knew I’d sob at some point during almost every episode.  I’m really hoping that this book packs a similar emotional punch and by the description, it sounds entirely possible.

LITTLE BIG LOVE by Katy Regan

Publication Date:   June 5, 2018

From Goodreads:

About a Boy meets Parenthood in this smart, big-hearted love story about a family for whom everything changed one night, a decade ago, and the young boy who unites them all.

Ten-year-old Zac Hutchinson collects facts: octopuses have three hearts, Usain Bolt is the fastest man on earth. But no one will tell him the one thing he wants to know most: who his father is and where he went.

When Zac’s mother, Juliet, inadvertently admits that his dad is the only man she’s ever loved, Zac decides he is going to find him and deliver his mom the happily ever after she deserves.

But Liam Jones left for a reason, and as Zac searches for clues of his father, Juliet begins to rebuild what shattered on the day that was at once the happiest and most heartbreaking of her life.

Told through the eyes of Zac, Juliet, and grandfather Mick, Little Big Love is a layered, heartfelt, utterly satisfying story about family, love, and the secrets that can define who we are.

Can’t Wait Wednesday – Spotlight on THE DEATH OF MRS. WESTAWAY

My selection for this week is THE DEATH OF MRS. WESTAWAY by Ruth Ware.  From what I’ve seen from a few early reviews, this is a suspenseful thriller that is full of twists and turns and juicy family secrets all wrapped up in a creepy Gothic setting. I’ve also seen several people mention that it’s their favorite Ruth Ware book since In a Dark, Dark Wood.  I actually still haven’t gotten around to reading any of Ware’s books yet, but the premise of this one really intrigues me.

THE DEATH OF MRS. WESTAWAY by Ruth Ware

Publication Date:   May 29, 2018

From Goodreads:

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of In a Dark, Dark Wood, The Woman in Cabin 10, and The Lying Game comes Ruth Ware’s highly anticipated fourth novel.

On a day that begins like any other, Hal receives a mysterious letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She realizes very quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong person—but also that the cold-reading skills she’s honed as a tarot card reader might help her claim the money.

Soon, Hal finds herself at the funeral of the deceased…where it dawns on her that there is something very, very wrong about this strange situation and the inheritance at the center of it.

Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Ware’s signature suspenseful style, this is an unputdownable thriller from the Agatha Christie of our time.

My selection for this week is THE WICKED KING by Holly Black.  I know this book is still nearly a year away, but I just finished The Cruel Prince, the amazing first book in this series, last week and I really need to know what happens next with Cardan and Jude!  NOTE:  Don’t read the synopsis if you haven’t already read the first book because it’s a bit spoilery.  Just know that it’s a fabulous series and you need it in your life!  And how about that gorgeous cover?!

THE WICKED KING by Holly Black

Publication Date:   January 8, 2019

From Goodreads:

The enchanting and bloodthirsty sequel to the New York Times bestselling novel The Cruel Prince.

You must be strong enough to strike and strike and strike again without tiring.

To do so, she has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. Navigating the constantly shifting political alliances of Faerie would be difficult enough if Cardan were easy to control. But he does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her even as his fascination with her remains undiminished.

When it becomes all too clear that someone close to Jude means to betray her, threatening her own life and the lives of everyone she loves, Jude must uncover the traitor and fight her own complicated feelings for Cardan to maintain control as a mortal in a Faerie world.

Can’t Wait Wednesday – Spotlight on SKY IN THE DEEP by Adrienne Young

* * * * *

My selection for this week is SKY IN THE DEEP by Adrienne Young.  Okay, first of all, this is a story about Vikings, so I was already hooked as soon as I heard that.  But then, that little bit in the blurb about Eelyn seeing the impossible on the battlefield – her dead brother fighting for the enemy (Say what??????).  Yeah, that was the clincher for me. I know that’s some drama I want to get to the bottom of.  I’ve seen some great reviews for this one already too, so I’m really excited for it.

SKY IN THE DEEP by Adrienne Young

From Goodreads:

She is given no choice but to trust Fiske, her brother’s friend, who sees her as a threat. They must do the impossible: unite the clans to fight together, or risk being slaughtered one by one. Can’t Wait Wednesday – Spotlight on MUSE OF NIGHTMARES by Laini Taylor

* * * * *

My selection for this week is MUSE OF NIGHTMARES by Laini Taylor.  I fell in love with Laini Taylor’s writing style when I read Strange the Dreamer, the first book in this incredible series.  It was one of my favorite reads from last year and the first book ended on such a shocking note that I’ve been dying to get my hands on the second book ever since.  It sucks that we have to wait until October but I just know it’s going to be worth the wait!

MUSE OF NIGHTMARES by Laini Taylor

Publication Date:   October 2, 2018

From Goodreads:

The highly anticipated, thrilling sequel to the New York Timesbestseller, Strange the Dreamer, from National Book Award finalist Laini Taylor, author of the bestselling Daughter of Smoke & Bone trilogy.

Sarai has lived and breathed nightmares since she was six years old.
She believed she knew every horror, and was beyond surprise.
She was wrong.

In the wake of tragedy, neither Lazlo nor Sarai are who they were before. One a god, the other a ghost, they struggle to grasp the new boundaries of their selves as dark-minded Minya holds them hostage, intent on vengeance against Weep.

Lazlo faces an unthinkable choice–save the woman he loves, or everyone else?–while Sarai feels more helpless than ever. But is she? Sometimes, only the direst need can teach us our own depths, and Sarai, the muse of nightmares, has not yet discovered what she’s capable of.

As humans and godspawn reel in the aftermath of the citadel’s near fall, a new foe shatters their fragile hopes, and the mysteries of the Mesarthim are resurrected: Where did the gods come from, and why? What was done with thousands of children born in the citadel nursery? And most important of all, as forgotten doors are opened and new worlds revealed: Must heroes always slay monsters, or is it possible to save them instead?

Love and hate, revenge and redemption, destruction and salvation all clash in this gorgeous sequel to the New York Timesbestseller, Strange the Dreamer.

Can’t Wait Wednesday – Spotlight on THE LADY’S GUIDE TO PETTICOATS AND PIRACY

My selection for this week is THE LADY’S GUIDE TO PETTICOATS AND PIRACY by Mackenzi Lee.  One of my absolute favorite reads of 2017 was The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue.  It was laugh-out-loud hilarious and was brimming with lovable characters.  Felicity Montague, with her razor sharp wit and her unwavering desire to become a doctor during a time where that was just unheard of, quickly became one of my favorites.  I’m over the moon to know that she’s now going to have her own book in this series and can’t wait to get my hands on a copy.  I predict this will be one of my favorite 2018 reads!

THE LADY’S GUIDE TO PETTICOATS AND PIRACY by Mackenzi Lee

Publication Date:   October 2, 2018

From Goodreads:

Felicity Montague is through with pretending she prefers society parties to books about bone setting—or that she’s not smarter than most people she knows, or that she cares about anything more than her dream of becoming a doctor.

A year after an accidentally whirlwind tour of Europe, which she spent evading highwaymen and pirates with her brother Monty, Felicity has returned to England with two goals in mind—avoid the marriage proposal of Callum Doyle, a lovestruck suitor from Edinburgh; and enroll in medical school. However, her intellect and passion will never be enough in the eyes of the administrators, who see men as the sole guardians of science.

But then a small window of hope opens. Doctor Alexander Platt, an eccentric physician that Felicity idolizes, is looking for research assistants, and Felicity is sure that someone as forward thinking as her hero would be willing to take her on. However, Platt is in Germany, preparing to wed Felicity’s estranged childhood friend Johanna. Not only is Felicity reluctant to opening old wounds, she also has no money to make the trip.

Luckily, a mysterious young woman is willing to pay Felicity’s way, so long as she’s allowed to travel with Felicity disguised as her maid. In spite of her suspicions, Felicity agrees, but once the girl’s true motives are revealed, Felicity becomes part of a perilous quest that will lead her from the German countryside to the promenades of Zurich to secrets lurking beneath the Atlantic.

Can’t Wait Wednesday – Spotlight on OLIVIA TWIST by Lorie Langdon

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, which encourages fellow bloggers to spotlight upcoming releases that we’re excited about.  It is a meme that I have  loved participating in for over a year now, but as Jill is no longer actively posting, from now on I’ll just be linking to Can’t Wait Wednesday, hosted by Tressa, which is a spinoff of the original WoW meme.

* * * * *

My selection for this week is Olivia Twist by Lorie Langdon.  I read and loved most of Charles Dickens’ novels when I was in high school and college, and Oliver Twist has always stood out as a sentimental favorite.  I’m intrigued by the idea of a re-imagining of this classic tale with a female in the starring role.  I also catch a hint of a possible hate-to-love trope, which as those who read my post yesterday know, I’m a huge fan of.

OLIVIA TWIST by Lorie Langdon

Publication Date:   March 6, 2018

From Goodreads:

Olivia Brownlow is no damsel in distress. Born in a workhouse and raised as a boy among thieving London street gangs, she is as tough and cunning as they come. When she is taken in by her uncle after a caper gone wrong, her life goes from fighting and stealing on the streets to lavish dinners and soirees as a debutante in high society. But she can’t seem to escape her past … or forget the teeming slums where children just like her still scrabble to survive.

Jack MacCarron rose from his place in London’s East End to become the adopted “nephew” of a society matron. Little does society know that MacCarron is a false name for a boy once known among London gangs as the Artful Dodger, and that he and his “aunt” are robbing them blind every chance they get. When Jack encounters Olivia Brownlow in places he least expects, his curiosity is piqued. Why is a society girl helping a bunch of homeless orphan thieves? Even more intriguing, why does she remind him so much of someone he once knew? Jack finds himself wondering if going legit and risking it all might be worth it for love.

Olivia Twist is an innovative reimagining of Charles Dickens’ classic tale Oliver Twist, in which Olivia was forced to live as a boy for her own safety until she was rescued from the streets. Now eighteen, Olivia finds herself at a crossroads: revealed secrets threaten to destroy the “proper” life she has built for her herself, while newfound feelings for an arrogant young man she shouldn’t like could derail her carefully laid plans for the future.

* * * * *

My selection for this week is In Sight of Stars by Gae Polisner.  I read Polisner’s The Memory of Things a couple of years ago and fell in love with her writing style, so I was thrilled to learn that she has another book coming out next month, and that it is a coming of age story that focuses on mental illness.  That appealed to me right away, but then these early reviews sealed the deal.

  • “An intense, sometimes graphic, totally heartbreaking portrait of a character who will keep pages turning.” – Booklist, Starred Review
  • “An unapologetic and wry story about a teen finding his way out of a personal crisis.” – Kirkus Reviews
  • “An achingly fierce exploration of the way the world wounds us and heals us. If you love exquisitely written coming-of-age stories that will leave you breathless, In Sight of Stars is for you.” – Jeff Zentner, William C. Morris award-winning author of The Serpent King and Goodbye Days
  • “What a book. So human and kind and forgiving and real.” – Geoff Herbach, award-winning author of Stupid Fast and Hooper

My selection for this week is Escaping from Houdini by Kerri Maniscalco.  When I first started this series, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it or not. But man, I fell for it hard and fast.  I adore both Audrey Rose and Thomas and can’t wait to see what they get up to in the third installment of this series.  This one sounds especially intense with everyone being trapped on a ship with a killer on the loose.

My selection for this week is BRUJA BORN by Zoraida Cordova.  Labyrinth Lost, the first book in this series, was such an amazing read that I just can’t wait to get my hands on the second book in the series, which follows one of the other sisters in the Mortiz family.  I remember reading last year that the author created this series because she wanted a Latina version of the TV series Charmed so I like the idea that each book will focus on a different sister.
