“Man Shall Inherit the Earth…Unless She Kills Him First.”  I’ve been wanting to try one of Camilla Bruce’s books for a while now and when I saw this attention-grabbing tagline on the cover of her latest novel, In the Garden of Spite, I knew I had to read it.  In the Garden of Spite is a work of historical fiction that follows the life of Belle Gunness, perhaps better known as “The Black Widow of La Porte,” one of the most famous female serial killers in American History.

Let me start by saying In the Garden of Spite isn’t for the faint of heart.  Belle’s preferred methods of dispatching her victims ranged from poisons to cleavers, and she quite literally butchered them, chopping them into manageable pieces to make it easier to bury them in her backyard.  So yes, it’s gory and gruesome at times, but if you can get past that, this story is a fascinating, in-depth look inside the mind of a serial killer.  I was equally repulsed and riveted the entire time I was reading.

The author takes us through about thirty years of Belle’s life, from when she was a child living in poverty in Norway all the way through to the height of her killing spree once she has immigrated to America.  Belle’s early life was not an easy one and the author paints a vivid portrait as to how abuse, trauma, and poverty could have shaped her into the very disturbed woman we meet in this book.

Belle is a truly fascinating character and I found myself drawn to her more than I expected to be.  She’s not an especially likeable character, being a serial killer and all, but wow, her resourcefulness and determination is impressive! As twisted as she could be most of the time, I frequently found myself quite impressed by her at other times.  How she managed to spin her way out of trouble time and time again, and how she is constantly able to reinvent herself.  Normally an unlikeable main character would derail my enjoyment of a book, but Belle is just so fascinating that I found myself glued to the story in spite of myself.

One of my favorite parts of the story though is how Belle’s life is presented.  The author uses two perspectives, 1) Belle’s and 2) Belle’s older sister, Nellie, who also lives in America.  With Belle’s perspective, we obviously get that intimate look into what she’s thinking and feeling as she commits each heinous murder.  With Nellie’s perspective though, we get the perspective of a family member who loves her sister deeply, but who is also torn between her desire to protect her baby sister from the world and her increasing suspicion that there is something truly broken in Belle and that she may be forced to do something about it.  I just loved the contrast in these two points of view.

If you’re interested in learning more about The Black Widow of La Porte, I highly recommend In the Garden of Spite.  It’s a dark and grisly, yet truly riveting tale.

Emma Lord’s new YA contemporary, You Have a Match, follows 16-year-old Abby Day. When Abby agrees to take a DNA test, alongside her two best friends, Connie and Leo, she thinks she’s just doing it for moral support because Leo is adopted and would like to know more about his biological family.  What Abby doesn’t count on is that taking that simple little test will turn her entire life upside down when it connects her to an older sister named Savannah (“Savvy”) she never even knew existed.

Abby has no idea what to do with this information, but then Savvy reaches out to her and wants to meet. After an initial meeting where Abby ends up with more questions than answers, she agrees to meet up with Savvy at summer camp so they can really get to the bottom of why Abby’s parents gave up Savvy for adoption.  Add Leo, who Abby has some awkward more-than-friends feelings for, to the mix because he also attends the same summer camp and you’ve got a recipe for an entertaining and cute read with lots of potential for emotions to run high.

The relationship between Abby and Savvy was the biggest highlight of the story for me.  Abby is a born risk taker, who tends to act first and think about it later. She’s also a budding photographer who inherited her love of photography from her grandfather who passed away recently. Abby has been struggling a bit with her grief since his passing, both in her personal life and academically.  In contrast, Savvy comes across as little Miss Perfect. She’s a social media influencer who focuses on healthy living.  Her Instagram feed is filled with yoga, meditation, healthy eating, etc.  Savvy wants everything in her life to be picture perfect so Abby’s act first, think later, rules are optional philosophy does not sit well with her.

These two are such polar opposites that it’s hard to believe that they could possibly be sisters, but I really loved watching their relationship progress the more time they spend together.  There are plenty of bumps in the road as the two of them constantly butt heads over pretty much everything, but the relationship growth comes across as very authentic and I liked that both sisters learned a lot and grew as a result of the challenges they encountered and mistakes they made along the way.

I also loved the blend of family, friendships, sisterhood, and romance, along with the summer camp setting. In addition to the sibling relationship, there’s also the mystery of why Abby’s parents gave up Savvy for adoption and then promptly had Abby a year and a half later.  Getting to the bottom of that mystery kept me turning the pages, as did wanting to see Abby sort through her feelings for Leo.  Leo is such a sweetheart so I was 100% invested in Abby being brave enough to take a chance on him.

I really enjoyed reading You Have a Match.  It’s a fun and quick read, but also just one of those stories that has a little something for everyone and that will leave you with a contented smile on your face.

Julia Walton’s new novel, Just Our Luck, is the feel good book I really needed in my life this year.  It follows Leo, a teen who has struggled with anxiety all his life.  His mom died when he was younger so his Greek grandmother, Yia Yia, was the one who watched over him and provided him, not only with coping mechanisms, like knitting, to help with his anxiety, but also with two “rules for life”:  1) Bad luck follows lies, and 2) Leave the Paros family alone.  When his grandmother passes away and his father is too wrapped up in his own grief to really know how to relate to Leo, Leo starts to struggle even more and manages to break both of Yia Yia’s “rules for life” in one fell swoop when a fist fight at school, followed by a fib to his father about what happened, lands Leo enrolled in a self-defense class at a gym where you guessed it, Evey Paros, of the forbidden Paros family from rule #2, works.  What follows is a life-changing journey for Leo and a delightfully, heartwarming coming of age story filled with humor, friendship, love, and so much more.

It was impossible not to root for Leo every step of the way as I was reading Just Our Luck. I’m a sucker for an underdog and for a soft boy and Leo is definitely both.  Leo’s passions are photography and knitting and the thought of having to even set foot in a martial arts style self defense class makes his heart race.  When Evey tells him she can secretly switch him over to a hot yoga class that takes place at the same time in exchange for a favor, Leo eagerly jumps at the chance even though he can practically hear his grandmother screaming at him to “LEAVE THAT PAROS GIRL ALONE!”  Even though he has no idea what he has gotten himself into, with either the hot yoga or with Evey, I loved watching Leo take this journey because he just grew so much every step of the way.  There were honest and raw moments as he continues to work through his anxiety and his overall awkwardness around people, and there were also hilarious moments in the yoga classes as well as with some of his antics with Evey.  I also enjoyed watching Leo and Evey grow closer and learning what the deal was with grandma’s rule about Evey’s family.

I think my favorite part of Just Our Luck though was the friendship that develops between Leo and Drake, the boy who punched Leo in the face and kicked off this whole chain of events.  Leo and Drake are forced to sit in a special detention every day and they have one goal:  to work through whatever issue led to the punch in the face.  It’s a hard sell at first with both boys just sitting there in awkward silence day after day, but once the breakthrough finally happens, a really wonderful friendship emerges.  One that left me with an even bigger smile on my face than Leo and Evey growing closer.

I could go on and on about how truly heartwarming and delightful Just Our Luck is, but just take my word for it.  If you’re in the mood for a feel good story, Just Our Luck is a must read.

Sophie Sullivan’s romcom debut novel Ten Rules for Faking It is a lighthearted read about two characters who are both in need of a happy ending.  The story follows Everly, a radio producer who has spent much of her adult life struggling with anxiety, horrendously bad birthdays, and apparently, awful taste in men as well.  Everly’s thirtieth birthday may be her worst yet too as she catches her boyfriend in bed with his assistant and then proceeds to accidentally rant about the cheating snake live on-air to all of her radio shows’ listeners.  The radio station’s manager, Chris, the other protagonist in the story, is initially not excited about the attention Everly’s on-air outburst is going to bring to the station, but when he realizes that nearly all the attention is positive and that all of Everly’s listeners think Everly deserved better, he comes up with a plan that will not only help Everly find someone better, but it could also benefit the radio station and land Everly’s show in a more coveted timeslot. His plan?  A Bachelorette-style radio contest where listeners enter for a chance to go out with Everly and prove that they are the Mr. Right she has been looking for.

The contest premise was so much fun and was definitely a highlight of the story for me.  I also thought the author did a wonderful job of showing just how much anxiety played a role in Everly’s everyday life and particularly as she is faced with the stressful prospect of going on so many blind dates per the rules of the contest.  I also liked the idea of Everly deciding that she really needed to take control of her life, and particularly that anxiety, so that she could really move forward and make things happen.  She comes up with a list of 10 “rules” that she’s going to try to live by, most of which are geared toward her not becoming a hoarder or crazy cat lady but also which force her to step out of her comfort zone and take chances both personally and professionally.  It’s a huge step and I was rooting Everly on every step of the way.

Everly and Chris were also highlights for me.  Both are just such likeable characters and I enjoyed watching them get to know each other better as the contest progressed.  I was an especially big fan of Chris, who is living under the shadow of his father, a cutthroat businessman who doesn’t think twice about pulling the plug on a company without any warning.  I found myself really invested in Chris as he tried to find a way to get out from under his father’s thumb and become a businessman in his own right, and one with a heart.  Watching both Chris and Everly evolve made for an enjoyable reading experience all around.  I did find myself wanting them to move through their issues faster and find their way to each other because this one is definitely a slow burn.

A final highlight for me was the cast of secondary characters at the radio station, especially Everly’s friendship with her DJ, Stacey.  Stacey is the friend who tells Everly what she needs to hear, even when she really doesn’t want to hear it.  As I was reading, I kept thinking it would be fun to read another book all about Stacey because she was such a scene stealer in this book.

If you’re in the mood for a fun and romantic read that will leave you with a smile on your face, give Ten Rules for Faking It a try.

I went into Rosie Danan’s debut novel, The Roommate, spoiler free and just have to start off by saying this book is such a breath of fresh air.  The Roommate is a rom-com about a socialite and an adult entertainer (yep, a porn star) that I didn’t even know I needed in my life.  The premise, with its focus on the porn industry, is so unique and the main characters, Clara, Josh, and Josh’s ex, Naomi, are just so precious that I wanted to be bffs with all of them.

The characters are what really sold me on this story, mainly because they weren’t at all what I expected them to be like based on the usual stereotypes associated with socialites and porn stars.  Clara is pretty much the exact opposite of a Paris Hilton type.  She’s sweet, awkward, and lacks confidence when it comes to most areas of her life.  When the story opens, Clara has also just quit her job and moved from New York to California to live with her childhood crush because she has misread his signals and thinks she’s heading toward her happily ever after.  Instead of happily ever after, however, Clara finds herself shacking up with a random male roommate her crush has found on Craigslist and sublet his place to while he goes on tour with his band.  Talk about awkward!

Josh, the roommate in question, is just as endearing as Clara.  At first he comes across as very arrogant – he’s obviously proud of his ability to please women, but he’s also very charming, fun, and sweet, and pretty soon Clara warms up to him and so did I.  I grew to love him even more as Clara gets to know him better and it becomes clear that some of that arrogance is just a front.  Josh has a lot of layers to him, and just like with Clara, some of those layers are filled with insecurities, fears, and doubts.   I just loved how real both characters felt and how their relationship developed.  Yes, they certainly have their sexy, steamy moments filled with delicious banter, but they also have a lot of sweet, heartfelt moments that made me smile.

The Roommate also has its fair share of drama, some revolving around family expectations, but also specifically drama that revolves around the porn industry.  I really loved how Danan portrays all of the adult entertainers as scrappy underdogs fighting the greedy corporate villains for what is rightfully theirs.  She gives the readers an interesting look at what goes on behind the scenes and I really liked the depth it added to the story.  I also adored Josh’s ex, Naomi.  She’s Josh’s partner in most of his adult films and she’s also a badass in her own right.  I read that there will be a companion novel that focuses on Naomi, and I cannot wait to get my hands on a copy!

If you’re looking for a fresh, sexy, and heartfelt romance with perfectly imperfect characters that will have you wishing for a happy ending, The Roommate is the book you’re looking for.

How to Fail at Flirting by Denise Williams is exactly the kind of read I have been craving this year. It’s that perfect blend of rom-com fun and weightier, more dramatic moments that makes for such a satisfying multi-layered read.

How to Fail at Flirting follows Naya Turner, an education professor at a local university who finds her job in jeopardy because of possible budget cuts.  Since she left an abusive relationship, Naya has 100% thrown herself into her work, so she is devastated to hear her job may be in trouble.  In need of a distraction, Naya lets her friends convince her she needs to get out into the world of dating again.  Naya’s looking for a no-strings hookup but instead, she meets Jake, a man that she really just clicks with. Everything about him seems perfect, that is until she finds out what he does for a living and that it could directly impact her own career in a negative way. Can Naya and Jake find a way to overcome their conflict or is their relationship doomed before it ever gets started?

I really loved and admired Naya so much.  She’s smart, sassy, passionate about her teaching career, and she’s also brave and resilient.  After learning about her horrible experiences at the hands of an abusive ex, I was rooting so hard for her to find true happiness.  I wanted her to go to that bar, have a blast completing every item on the hilarious list of dating dares her friends had given her, and then find a wonderful man who appreciates her for the strong woman she is.

I also adored Jake, the man Naya meets at the bar.  Jake is handsome, eloquent, kind, and he has a great sense of humor.  He has also recently gotten out of a bad relationship, so he’s a little reluctant about putting himself out there in the dating pool as well, that is until he meets Naya and can’t deny his attraction to her.  I loved watching their relationship slowly develop and was heartbroken as soon as I realized there was a real possibility that his job might prevent them from finding happiness together.

The twist with Jake’s job possibly threatening Naya’s job made what was already a compelling read truly unputdownable.  I just had to know if Jake and Naya were going to get a happy ending.  If you enjoy stories that feature loveable characters with undeniable chemistry whose happy ending is threatened by unforeseen circumstances, How to Fail at Flirting is a must-read.

Julie Buxbaum’s new novel Admission is a timely and relevant read that takes an inside look at a college admissions scandal.  The novel contains clear parallels to the recent admissions scandal involving actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin as it explores what happens when those who are rich and privileged enough to already have the deck stacked in their favor decide that still isn’t enough.

Admission opens with a bang and never looks back.  The protagonist of the story, Chloe Wynn Berringer, awakens to the sound of the doorbell ringing and watches helplessly as her world unravels around her. Her mom, a famous celebrity, is led away in handcuffs, and as Chloe soon learns while watching the news, her mother has gotten caught up in a college admissions scandal while trying to bribe Chloe’s way into her college of choice.  The story then progresses, very effectively using dual timelines, “now” and “then”, to follow Chloe and her family as they deal with the fallout from the scandal and to show what happened to lead to the moment where the FBI came knocking.

I have to admit that my feelings for her and for her family were very ambivalent.  Like the general public, I was furious to learn the lengths these rich, entitled folks would go to in order to take what they wanted, even if it meant taking an admissions slot that should have gone to a more-deserving student.  To Buxbaum’s credit though, she brings Chloe and her family to life in such a way that I wanted to learn more about them and understand their motivations and wanted to know if they had any understanding or remorse for how their actions impacted other families.  In the same regard, Chloe’s journey fascinated me because she really is just an all-around average person – average intelligence, average grades, average school activities, etc. There is nothing stand-out about her aside from that her family has money, so there’s no way she should have had her pick of colleges.  Although Chloe comes across as dense and naïve, I found it hard to believe that she was completely blindsided by what her parents had done and believed she had legitimately earned a spot at her college of choice. It soon became clear though that the novel is about more than just the actual admissions scandal; it’s also about Chloe’s exploration of whether she knowingly or unknowingly played any role in her parents’ scheme. As ambivalent as I felt about Chloe, I did really enjoy watching her grow as she tried to make sense of and learn from the experience rather than just play the victim.

My favorite characters in the novel though are actually Chloe’s best friend, Shola, and Chloe’s younger sister, Isla.  I adored both of these brilliant and driven young women and that they were up close and personal examples for Chloe of how truly unfair the admissions scandal is for hard-working students who have their spots stolen by rich people.  Shola is an incredibly gifted student who works hard everyday and her dream is to get into Harvard, but she needs a lot of financial aid in order for it to happen.  Shola faces the real fear that she will be rejected in favor of a privileged student who doesn’t need aid.  And then poor Isla. Like Shola, Isla is brilliant and a hard worker whose dream is to attend Yale and based on her grades, test scores, and overall amazing transcript, she should be able to get in pretty much anywhere on her own merits.  But is her name now tainted because of what her parents did for Chloe?  Where I had minimal sympathy for Chloe, these two young ladies had all of my sympathy and they were the two I found myself hardcore rooting for as I was reading.

If you’re in the mood for a compulsively readable family drama with a “ripped from the headlines” vibe, look no further than Julie Buxbaum’s new novel, Admission.  You won’t be able to put it down!

Chasing Lucky has everything I’ve come to love and expect from a Jenn Bennett novel. It has an engaging story with a wonderful romance, moving family moments, and most importantly, it is filled with unforgettable and ultra-relatable characters.

There’s a lot to love about this story, and main characters Josie Saint-Martin and Lucky Karras are at the top of my list.  Josie and her mom moved away from their New England hometown several years ago and have only now returned to help out in Josie’s grandmother’s book shop while she is out of the country.  Josie is not excited about being home and only views this as a temporary pitstop. Josie is a budding photographer and plans to save up enough money to move across the country to L.A. where her famous photographer dad is.  Josie is torn because she doesn’t want to break her mother’s heart and leave her alone, but she is also determined to follow her dreams.  That is, until she crosses paths with Lucky, resident bad boy and also Josie’s former best friend from when she lived there before.  After an initial awkward reacquaintance because Lucky isn’t at all like Josie remembered him to be, Josie and Lucky renew their friendship.  It is this developing relationship and its many possibilities that really drew me into the story and I especially wanted to know what had happened to Lucky to change him so much in the years that Josie was away.

In addition to these two characters and their journeys, I also really loved the New England small town setting.  Lucky’s family business is a shipyard of sorts and there are lots of scenes set on or near boats and the ocean and Bennett describes these scenes so vividly that I felt like I was there.  I also adored the Saint-Martin family’s book shop, which is just so quaint.

Chasing Lucky hooked me from the opening scene and captivated me until the very end because I was so invested in Josie and Lucky, both individually and as a pair. I needed happy endings for them both and I also needed a happy ending for Josie’s mom, who in a very intriguing side plot, has some things from her past that come back to haunt her as soon as she returns home. If you’re a Jenn Bennett fan and/or a fan of small-town romances and bad boys who may not really be bad boys after all, be sure to check out Chasing Lucky.

I was a big fan of Kerri Maniscalco’s Stalking Jack the Ripper series so I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy of her latest novel, Kingdom of the Wicked, especially once I heard it was about witches and demons.  I started reading it last week and let me tell you, it’s the perfect dark and twisted read for spooky season.

Kingdom of the Wicked follows Emilia a young witch who lives with her family, including her twin sister Vittoria, in Sicily.  The witches in Sicily live in secret to avoid persecution, so it is quite shocking when witches start turning up dead, brutally murdered. Who’s responsible?  Is it the new witch hunting group that has suddenly cropped up or is something supernatural afoot?  When Emilia’s twin becomes a victim, Emilia, who was normally the more cautious of the two, throws all caution to the wind and vows revenge.

At its heart, I’d say Kingdom of the Wicked is a story of revenge.  Emilia is willing to do absolutely anything to bring her sister’s killers to justice and is tunnel visioned on that quest, even when it quite literally takes her to Hell, or to the Princes of Hell, I should say.  And it is when she magically binds herself to Wrath, one of the Princes of Hell, that everything changes…

The chemistry between Emilia and Wrath is off the charts.  They both really knew how to push each other’s buttons and I couldn’t get enough of their banter and bickering.  Wrath is dark, dangerous, and sexy, and it becomes clear as the story progresses that he develops feelings for Emilia that go beyond just the magic of the bond. He has a soft spot for her, whether he likes it or not.  Emilia finds herself experiencing similar feelings.  Neither should trust the other but can they fight the intoxicating lure of their attraction?  I was a huge fan of Charmed way back when and these two seriously gave me Phoebe and Cole vibes!

Aside from the amazing chemistry between Emilia and Wrath, and the compelling mystery as to who has been killing witches, I also fell in love with the worldbuilding, especially 19th century Sicily.  I’m a sucker for a story set in Italy, particularly if there’s food involved, and Emilia’s family owns a restaurant. Emilia loves to cook so the story is filled with vivid descriptions of delicious Italian recipes.  I also loved how atmospheric the story was.  It’s dark and eerie every time someone goes out because of the tension of knowing there’s a killer among them.  I also thought Maniscalco did a brilliant job with the witchy folklore. I absolutely loved the details of Emilia’s family history and how they ultimately became tied to the devil himself.  And speak of the devil, her descriptions of the Princes of Hell are truly brilliant.  This is one of those books where, as I was reading, I could easily imagine it as a film.

I don’t want to give anything away regarding Emilia’s quest for revenge and how her entanglement with Wrath factors in, but I will say some unexpected twists and turns at the end have me very eager to get my hands on the next book.

If dark and twisty reads filled with witches and demons are your things, you’ll want to visit the Kingdom of the Wicked. You won’t be disappointed!

Minnie Darke’s new novel The Lost Love Song is one of the most unique love stories I’ve read in a long time.  Rather than a character, the star of this story is actually a love song and the powerful yet subtle way it serves as a catalyst to bring people together all around the world.  The unnamed love song was composed in a hotel in Singapore by a piano prodigy named Diana Clare, who wrote it for her fiancé, Arie Johnson. Diana desperately wanted Arie to feel all the love for him that she had in her heart, and while she was never very good with words, her exquisite music has always perfectly conveyed what she’s feeling.

When Diana returns home from her concert tour, she plans to share her song with Arie and tell him that she’s finally ready to get married.  When she checks out of her hotel, however, she accidentally leaves the notebook behind. When tragedy strikes soon after, it appears that the beautiful song is lost.  Or is it? When the notebook finds its way into the hands of another musician, he falls in love with the song as soon as he plays it and thus begins the song’s journey as it captivates everyone who hears it.

We get to see the song work its magic on several couples throughout the story and I really loved how the song felt like it was actually a character in the story with the way it spoke to people and brought them together.  That was probably my favorite thing about the story honestly.  I was also quite captivated by Arie and Diana’s story, which is both romantic and tragic, and by Arie’s connection to a young woman named Evie who is staying in the apartment next to his.   This was a double-edged sword for me though because although I loved that I was so drawn to these three characters, I didn’t find any other characters nearly as compelling.  This made for a slightly uneven read as I found myself skimming through their parts so that I could get back to Arie, Diana, and Evie where I would then devour their chapters.

Even with that issue though, I still really enjoyed The Lost Love Song overall.  It’s a beautiful story that is full of grief and heartache, but also with love, hope, and second chances.  If you’re a romantic at heart, I think you’ll love this one.

Author - Christine Drummond

Pub Date - 11/3/2026

Happy Friday, everyone! I’ve been putting together my holiday TBR so I was thrilled to get book mail from @christinedrummondwrites . This holiday romance sounds perfect and I can’t wait to dive into it!

SYNOPSIS:

She fixes everyone’s messes. Coming home means facing the one man who never needed fixing.

Charlotte “Charlie” Hayes has built a career out of fixing other people’s disasters. As a music publicist, she can spin a scandal, save a reputation, and make the messiest men look good—even the one she’s dating.

So when her famous boyfriend’s career implodes days before Christmas, Charlie throws herself into saving it—until Brent cancels their lease without a word and vanishes on tour. Homeless and single, Charlie is forced back to the small Connecticut hometown she thought she’d escaped, complete with holiday cheer, painful family memories, and Hunter Wells, the maddeningly good best friend she’s been avoiding.

Hunter has spent years loving Charlie quietly because he knew she wasn’t ready. But now she’s back, and he’s done waiting. With a thriving dog-walking business and a life rooted in Pinegrove, Hunter doesn’t need saving. He just needs Charlie to stop running long enough to imagine the life she never let herself want: one with him.

But as Charlie manages her ex’s high-pressure tour from afar, small-town Christmas starts to feel less like an escape and more like a beautiful mess—one she doesn’t have to clean up alone. Hunter will always belong to the town she spent years outrunning, and Charlie can’t build a future with him without facing the past that drove her away.

For their love to last beyond Christmas, can they make room for both their dreams—and a version of home Charlie is finally ready to trust?

Perfect for readers who love cozy holiday romance, friends-to-lovers yearning, small-town charm, he-falls-first heroes, black cat x golden retriever energy, fake dating moments, caretaking, and all the Christmas feels.

🤠 Review - TRIGGER HAPPY 🤠

Author - Meredith Trapp

Pub Date - 10/20/2026

Okay, I’m not going to lie - I came so close to DNFing this book almost as soon as I started it. I hadn’t read the synopsis and was just going off the cover, which was giving cute cowboy romance vibes. When I started reading and it became clear the book was about rival contract k!llers and started with the clean up of some pretty gnarly crime scenes, I was hesitant to continue because I didn’t think it would be my thing. That said, if you’re like me when you start it, keep going because this book is so much fun!

The story follows Sabrina, who is a Manhattan socialte, and Lawton, a wild cowboy. Both have been trained in their respective family businesses, which just happen to be rival murder-for-hire businesses. There’s bad blood between the families, so it’s very awkward when both Sabrina and Lawton get hired for the same job in Wyoming and have to pretend to be a happily married couple.

I loved the undercover element and how it allowed these two to get to know one another in a new way. They were clearly attracted to one another, so it was fun to watch them try and fail to fight their new feelings for one another.

This was such a great time and had so many laugh out loud moments!

I did an immersive read and thought the audiobook was especially hilarious. The narrators, Kelsey Navarro Foster and Jesus E. Martinez, did such a great job bringing these characters to life and capturing the overall lighthearted tone of the story.

Perfect for fans of:

Feuding Families
Forced Proximity
Fake Relationship

✨ Review - UNDONE ✨

Author - Peyton Corinne

Pub Date - 10/20/2026

I’m so sad to see the Undone series end, but what an incredible ride it has been! Every book has been so beautiful and has packed an emotional punch, but I think this final one hit me the hardest. Lily and Toren have both been through so much and my heart just broke for them over and over again. At the same time, I was rooting so hard for them to find the love and happiness together that they both deserved.

Toren especially had my heart because he’s so misunderstood. I hated how he was so beaten down and felt so unworthy of love. I actually had tears in my eyes when Coach Harris and his wife were so kind to Toren just because Toren couldn’t believe that someone could actually care about him.

My heart hurt for Lily as well. She’s a talented artist but is told time and again by her father that art is not a career, and he forces her down an academic path that she doesn’t want and isn’t suited for. Between the emotional abuse and the being set up for academic failure, Lily begins to struggle with her mental health.

I love a second chance romance, but this one almost broke me to hear what drove them apart in the first place. It made me all the more glad they found their way back to one another.

I did this as an immersive read and thought the audiobook narration was incredible. Andre Bellido and Caitlin Elizabeth perfectly capture the angst, the yearning, and the deep emotional connection between Lily and Toren.

The writing is beautiful and the emotion runs deep. Highly recommend this one!

📚 MESSY MONDAY - 26 in 2026 CHALLENGE UPDATE 📚 He 📚 MESSY MONDAY - 26 in 2026 CHALLENGE UPDATE 📚

Hey book friends! I hope you all had a wonderful weekend and that your Monday is off to a good start.

I spent part of my weekend doing some bookstagram housekeeping, which meant getting caught up on my 26 in 2026 challenge reviews.

I’ve been doing amazing on the challenge itself and only have 3 books left but was way behind on reviewing those books. I’ve never done a YES, NO, MAYBE style review before so I decided to go that route in my caption.

If you swipe through my slides though, there’s also a mini review for each book.

BOOKS READ:

Blood Over Bright Haven by M.L. Wang - YES

James by Percival Everett - YES/MAYBE (read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn first).

The Housemaid’s Secret by Freida McFadden - MAYBE

The Serpent and the Wings of Night by Carissa Broadbent - YES

Crimson River by Devney Perry - YES

An Echo in the Bone by Diana Gabaldon - YES

Kill for Me, Kill for You by Steve Cavanagh - YES

Phantasma by Kaylie Smith - YES/MAYBE (depending on if you’re okay with gore).

❓QOTD - If you’re doing any reading challenges this year, how are you doing with them? Have you met your reading goal for the year yet? Have you read any of these books?

Review: James is a beautifully written reimagining of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. It’s told from the perspective of Jim, a runaway slave, and is a much darker tale but the harrowing parts are well balance with other more humorous moments. I appreciated that it fleshes out Jim’s character and gives him so much more depth than the original. He comes across as wise and brave here, almost philosophical. I definitely recommending reading Huck Finn first and then reading this one to fully appreciate the different perspective

Review: Crimson River is the fifth book in The Edens series. It definitely works as a standalone but I recommend reading at least some of the earlier books first to meet the other Edens. Loved the heartfelt romance between Lyla and Vance, getting to learn more about the family, and I also loved the mystery and suspense elements, which made this such an addicting read.

Review: I’m still fully invested in Jamie and Claire and eve

Review - MISTLETOE ALL THE WAY

Author - Lauren Blakely

Pub Date - 10/6/2026

I still have several spooky season reads to get to, but I couldn’t resisting diving into Mistletoe All the Way, the new spicy holiday romance from Lauren Blakely. It’s a grumpy-sunshine, small town romance that is full of holiday cheer, and it was such a fun way to kick off my holiday romance reading.

Noah is a grumpy veterinarian who is not a fan of Christmas. He’s basically a sexy, broody Grinch who is trying to prove to his grandfather that he is the best person to take over the family horse farm now that his grandfather is retiring.

Eloise is a ray of sunshine - a little sweet, a little sassy, and passionate about making her PR business a success by securing work from the town mayor. She thinks she can achieve this by helping Noah win the town’s holiday competition and be crowned Mr. Holiday. Even though he can’t stand Christmas, Noah wants to take part in the contest to prove to his grandfather that he’s invested in the community. Eloise thinks she can change his mind when it comes to Christmas.

This was such a fun read! Eloise and Noah have great chemistry and I loved their opposites-attract dynamic and the hilarious banter between them. The Mr. Holiday competition was so entertaining and had me laughing out loud on several occasions. Poor Noah! 🤣

I was also invested in Noah & Eloise teaming up to save the horse farm from Noah’s scheming, shady cousin. The two of them make a great team, in every way.

I paired the e-arc with the audiobook & recommend this route. There’s a full cast narration lead by Erin Mallon and Teddy Hamilton, and they do a wonderful job capturing the fun and festive nature of the story, as well as the attraction between Eloise and Noah.

If you’re looking for a fun Christmas romance to add to your holiday TBR, you can’t go wrong with thiis book!

❄️ Review - HOME FOR THE HOMICIDES ❄️

Author - Elle Cosimano and Hannah Morrissey

Pub Date - 10/13/2026

I didn’t think I was read to start reading holiday books until I dove into Home for the Homicides. It’s a hilarious holiday-themed murder mystery that kept me chuckling to myself from start to finish, and that also features a healthy dose of spicy romance between the two rival detectives who are assigned to investigate the murder.

I had such a fun time with this clever story! It’s set in the town of Christmas, a cozy, charming town that looks straight out of a Hallmark holiday movie, right down to the all of the characters having holiday-themed names, including rival detectives Holly Frost and Mark Shepherd, although they might be better known by the unfortunate nicknames they’ve recently earned, Betty Crocker and Pole Licker, respectively.

Holly and Mark have been sent to Christmas not only to solve this murder, but also to hopefully redeem themselves. As they are forced to work together, we are treated to major unresolved sexual tension between them, so much yearning, and endless witty banter.

I’d consider this a cozy mystery. The murder victim came to town looking for love and ends up murdered with an icicle. While there are plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing and interested, the stakes are still fairly low and the humor abounds.

I loved the balance between mystery and romance, and one of the other highlights for me was the narrator who a running, funny & sarcastic commentary. I also loved that the story takes place over 12 days, which immediately made me think of the 12 Days of Christmas.

The audiobook features a multi-cast narration with Angela Dawe, who does a brilliant job creating distinctive voices for all of the characters, as well as Colin Donnell, & Patti Murin. They were all so entertaining!

If you’re don’t think you’re ready for Christmas in October, this book will change your mind!

🪦 Review - LOVE YOU TO DEATH 🪦

Author - Jenna Levine

Pub Date - 10/13/2026

I think I’m becoming obsessed with grim reaper romances! I’m a huge fan of Jenna Levine’s paranormal romances and she has really outdone herself with her latest, Love You to Death. It features Daniel, a jaded grim reaper who falls hard for Lucy, a recently deceased woman whose soul he has been sent to collect.

In spite of him being a reaper, I found Daniel to be very relatable. I think we’ve all probably experienced some job that we’ve done for so long that we just don’t want to do it anymore and with his being death over and over again, it’s easy to see why he is so jaded.

My heart broke for Lucy as soon as I realized Daniel had come for her. Her night was already such a mess and all she wants to do is go be with her sister and help her plan her wedding, and instead she gets hit by a bus. Talk about bad luck! I admired her pluck and determination to bargain with the reapers for more time so she can be there for her sister’s wedding, and I loved that she made such an impression on Daniel that he’s willing to break the rules and help her strike a deal with his bosses, a deal that leads to him having to closely monitor her for the extra time she has been granted.

I loved the connection that forms between Lucy and Daniel and especially that being around Lucy reminds Daniel of what it was like to be human. Lucy’s second chance at life is a second chance for him as well, and it was so great to watch him help her live what time she has left to the fullest.

I also loved that this was both a fun and swoony, slow burn romance and a very moving story about second chances and about being good enough just as you are. It made me laugh but it also just gave me such a full heart.

Highly recommend this book for fans of:

Paranormal romance
Grumpy Sunshine
Forced Proximity
Forbidden Romance
Balance of fun banter and poignant moments
Spicy Romance

Rosie is such an easy character to love and to root for. She runs a bookstore in Heartwood Hollow, and she and her sisters are witches. They also happen to be under a curse that doesn’t allow them to find love. Rosie isn’t having it though because she wants to her her one true love, so she decides she’s going to figure out how to break the curse.

I admired Rosie’s strength and determination as she sets out to conjure up the ghost who cursed them and make him tell her how to break it. Once she has her answer, she teams up with her neighbor Jack, who actually cannot stand her because she’s too bubbly and over the top for him, to go on a magical quest to round up all of the ingredients she needs. Why does Jack agree to help? Because the ghost who cursed Rosie is Jack’s grandfather!

I had such a good time following Rosie and Jack on this quest through the paranormal community. The banter between these two was hilarious and even though they’ve clearly been annoying each other for years, there’s also some major chemistry there. When they have to pretend to be a couple to get into a paranormal club to retrieve an ingredient, I just knew we were well on our way to finding out how Rosie and Jack really feel about one another, and I was so here for it!

Rosie and Jack are such endearing characters and they aren’t the only ones either. I loved Rosie’s sisters, Percy the cat, and Phillip the ghost, all of whom are quite meddlesome in the best way.

If you’re in the mood for a cozy fantasy with a dash of spice this spooky season, Meet Cute Magic is the book for you.

The audiobook was narrated by Lilly Drake and Michael Gallagher, who do a wonderful job of capturing the story’s lighthearted tone, as well as the chemistry and the pining between Rosie and Jack. They were a delight to listen to!

👻 Review - ENTITIES TO LOVERS 👻

Author - Mallory Marlowe

Pub Date - 10/13/2026

Mallory Marlowe is one of my favorite authors for paranormal romances and her latest, Entities to Lovers, is a must-read for spooky season! Not only is it spooky and atmospheric, but it’s also cozy and filled with New England fall vibes.

Rory and Ezra work as ghost tour guides at Ye Olde Spirit Shop in Boston. Sparks fly whenever they are together and they claim to loathe one another. It’s pretty obvious that’s not the case though because they’re always secretly checking each other out.

Things change, however, when they are forced to give a tour together and while bickering, break something in a haunted house, and end up cursed. Rory is a medium who can communicate with ghosts and when she hears “I’ll show you!”, she knows they messed up.

Their curse might be the most fun curse and the most creative use of forced proximity I’ve ever read about. Whenever they are apart, terrible things happen to each of them, but as soon as they are together again, they are surrounded by good fortune. That is, unless they start bickering again, them all hell breaks loose. It was such a good time following Ezra and Rory as they try to figure out what the ghost is trying to show them so they can finally break the curse.

The romance was everything and I was obsessed with Rory and Ezra as a couple, especially when they start giving more tours together. When they let their guard down around one another, they are an amazing team and clearly perfect for one another.

I honestly loved everything about this book, but a real standout was the tours themselves. I thought it was so fun that Ezra and Rory dress up like ghosts in period costumes and give the tour as if they are spirits.

Other standouts were the ghostly secondary characters, including a haunted porcelain doll named Clementine who gives gifts to people she likes, and then Luna, a spirit in Rory’s apartment who likes to tidy and organize, & help Rory pick out her outfits.

Spooky season romance perfection!

Author - Laura Langa

Thanks to @lauralangawrites for the gifted review copy!

Pardon the baseball pun, but Laura Langa has knocked it out of the park with Love Beyond the Diamond, the latest installment in her Waves Baseball series. I’ve enjoyed every book in the series so far, but I think this one is my favorite.

Shane is the gruff, tattooed right fielder for the Waves baseball team, and Willow is the chaotic artist who brings out the side of Shane that no one else sees. I was captivated by them from the moment they meet and Shane scoops Willow up and rushes her to the hospital because he notices something is off with her. Even under those tense circumstances, it was obvious they had incredible chemistry and I found myself fully invested in seeing how their relationship developed.

I was practically swooning by the time they end up in a marriage of convenience to help each other out, and I loved how supportive they were of each other. Shane helps Willow learn how to handle her new diabetes diagnosis while the marriage gives her health insurance she wouldn’t otherwise have, and Willows helps Shane learn how to just live and have fun by exposing him to childhood experiences he has never done before. I always love the way Langa writes relationships in her books and this one is definitely a new favorite. The tender moments, the passionate kisses, the longing, it’s all just chef’s kiss!

While the relationship is really sweet, there are also plenty of laughs in Love Beyond the Diamond, especially in the team group chat. If you like found family vibes, you’re going to love the Waves baseball players.

📚 TEN BEFORE THE END 📚 Hey book friends! It’s har 📚 TEN BEFORE THE END 📚

Hey book friends! It’s hard to believe we’ve reached that point in the year where it’s time to select books for the “Ten Before the End” challenge, but here we are!

Embarrassingly enough, my stack is mostly filled with books I got for Christmas last year and never read. 😅

I’m pretty determined to get at least those books read because I do not want to carry them over to my 27 in 2027 challenge, if at all possible.

Here’s what I’m hoping to read before the end of the year:

The Correspondent by Virginia Evans
Broken Country by Clare Leslie Hall
The Irish Goodbye by Heather Aimee O’Neill
Sable Peak by Devney Perry
Fake Skating by Lynn Painter
Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult
The Favorites by Layne Fargo
Sandwich by Catherine Newman
You Had Me at Hola by Alexis Daria
Duke by Jessica Peterson

❓QOTD - What’s a book you’re hoping to read before the end of the year? Have you read any of these? Which one should I start with?
