Akemi Dawn Bowman is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.  She excels at creating characters and stories that are just so incredibly relatable.  I loved her first two books, Starfish and Summer Bird Blue, but I have to admit I was a little nervous that I wouldn’t connect as much to her latest novel, Harley in the Sky, since it is set in the world of the circus and focuses on a girl’s dream of becoming a trapeze artist.  My worry was completely unfounded though because at its heart, Harley in the Sky is a beautiful coming of age story about the search for identity and following one’s dreams.

The story follows Harley Milano, a young woman who has grown up in her parent’s Las Vegas-based circus.  Harley has dreamed of flying high as an aerialist for as long as she can remember and has even trained with her parents’ performers whenever possible.  When Harley turns 18, she approaches her parents to tell them she wants to train full-time and become one of their aerialists.  To her shock and dismay, her parents shut her down completely.  She is going to college, no ifs ands or buts about it.  Harley is crushed by her parent’s reaction and rebels by leaving home and joining a rival traveling circus.

Harley’s growth as a character is what really drew me into this story.  She is a flawed and very realistic character and one that many will relate to. She’s stubborn and headstrong, prone to make rash and emotional decisions, and she’s all too willing to hurt and betray others to follow her dream.  Her journey is a hard one for her as well though.  It’s filled with hard work, disappointment, and at first, a great deal of loneliness as she must come to terms with what she has done and gradually work her way to accepting responsibility for the hurt she has caused if she has any hope of reconciling with her family.

Her journey is not all hard times though in that she makes some great new friends in the traveling circus and even meets a sweet boy named Vas.  While there is a romantic element there, Vas’ role is so much more than that as Harley is able to talk to him and work through her feelings in a way that she hasn’t been able to with anyone else.

Harley in the Sky is also a story about identity.  In addition to the struggle she faces regarding her need for independence to pursue her dream, Harley is also struggling with who she is.  She comes from a multi-racial family and is equal parts Chinese, Japanese, Italian, and American.  In Harley’s mind, she is so little of each of them that she feels like none of them.

Harley in the Sky was an emotional read for me on a couple of different levels.  I found myself wrapped up, not only in Harley’s journey, but I was also caught up in Bowman’s gorgeous writing as she vividly captures the atmosphere of the circus and gave me several moments of nostalgia from my own childhood of watching those performers make magic and fly through the air.  If you’re into coming of age stories that are sure to take you back to your own journey to adulthood and independence, be sure to check out Harley in the Sky.

Top Ten Tuesday – My Spring 2020 Reading List

March 17, 2020/44 Comments/by Suzanne

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is 2020 Spring TBR. This was a pretty easy topic for me since I, of course, have tons of books I’m hoping to get to this spring.  The hardest part was trying to narrow down to just ten to share and I failed on that so you get to see 13 books I’m planning to read.

Authors Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen are a dynamic duo when it comes to writing dark and twisty psychological thrillers that keep readers on the edge of their seats, and their latest offering, You Are Not Alone, continues the trend.  You Are Not Alone is a dark and disturbing read that explores what happens when an emotionally vulnerable young woman finds herself in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The story follows Shay Miller, whose life is just overall in a disappointing place for her.  She is working a temp job with no prospects of a permanent position on the horizon, she has no real friends to speak of, and she is in love with her roommate Sean, who already has a long-time girlfriend.  Shay finds herself mostly isolated and therefore vulnerable. When Shay happens to be in a subway station and witnesses a young woman commit suicide, she becomes obsessed with learning more about the victim.  She knows her obsession is unhealthy, but she feels compelled nonetheless to find out what led her to take her own life.

I found myself incredibly sympathetic to Shay and the position she has found herself in.  She feels a connection to the suicide victim in part because she can so easily put herself in that woman’s place and can imagine feeling like there’s nothing worth living for. I can understand why she feels it’s so important to find out what exactly drove this woman to do what she did.  She’s thinking of herself and what could drive her to that same point.

The story, and Shay’s life, takes a drastically different turn when she decides to attend the memorial service for the suicide victim and meets Cassandra and Jane Moore, who are sisters and who were also both close to the deceased.  Shay is fascinated by the ultra-charismatic sisters and her obsession with the victim soon expands to include them as well, especially since they seem very eager to befriend her.  Shay is desperate for friends and begins to imagine herself taking the victim’s place in the sisters’ circle of friends. Seems to easy and too good to be true, right?

Good things start happening for Shay as she deepens her connection to the sisters…until suddenly, they don’t. Out of nowhere, Shay finds herself inexplicably caught up in the investigation into the death of the suicide victim as well as another crime.  The authors ratchet up the tension and suspense as Shay desperately tries to figure out what is going on and how she’s going to get herself out of the mess she has found herself in.  I had a few minor issues with pacing early on in the story, but once I got to this part of the book, I flew through the rest of the pages trying put together the pieces of this wild and crazy puzzle.

You Are Not Alone is a disturbing and complex tale of manipulation, danger, and revenge.  If you’re into dark, twisty, and suspenseful reads, this is one that needs to go on your must-read list.

📱 Review - THE PHONE SWAP 📱

Author - Lia Louis

Pub Date - 8/25/26

When they swap seats on a flight to London, scientist Allie Lake and actor Milo Ford somehow also swap phones & don’t realize the mixup until they reach their respective destinations.

Unfortunately for Allie, who needs her phone for her work, Milo is filming on location in Romania for three weeks. She’ll have to wait until he returns to London to get her phone back. In the meantime, they agree to play secretary for one another, relaying messages.

With all of the back and forth, Allie and Milo quickly become friends and develop feelings for one another. Just before they are slated to meet in London, somehow all of their private chats end up leaked to the media, and they each blame the other and immediately break all contact until two years later when they coincidentally end up on the same scientific mission in the Arctic. Trapped together in the Arctic, Milo and Allie are forced to revisit old wounds and old feelings, which are clearly still there.

I thought the premise of this story, the swapped phones, was such a fun and unique way to have a meet cute between characters. I also loved them bonding while playing secretary for one another. They had so many fun and flirty conversations as well as some meatier conversations with emotional depth as they got to know one another better.

I also loved what felt like kismet when they end up in the Arctic together. I mean, what are the odds of Milo doing a documentary that just happens to tie in with Allie’s research?

I could have done without the miscommunication, but even though it drove me crazy, it did feel realistic for their particular situation.

Bottom line, I found both characters to be very likeable, which made the story an enjoyable read and listen overall.

Rebecca Norfolk & Nikolas Salmon are both new-to-me narrators and they did a wonderful job bringing Allie and Milo to life & capturing both the humor & the more emotional moments between them.

👻 REVIEW - Paper Ghosts 👻

Author - Sarah Addison Allen

Pub Date - 9/1//26

If you’re looking for an atmospheric read to add to your fall TBR, I want to put Paper Ghosts on your radar. It’s a multi-generational family drama that is part love story and part ghost story. Set in a small town in North Carolina, it follows several generations of women from the Wester family and the gift, or curse depending on your perspective, that they all share.

I really enjoyed the way this story unfolds in a dual timeline. The first follows Willamena Wester back in 1976 where she meets and falls in love with musician named Jack. Willahema feels trapped and overly controlled by her grandmother and makes plans to run away with Jack, a decision that ultimately takes a tragic turn. The second timeline is set in the present day and follows Bailey Wester, who is Willamena’s granddaughter. Bailey has just returned to the small North Carolina town and even though her grandmother pushed her away years ago, the two of them reluctantly reconnect now that Bailey has returned. Reconnecting though stirs up long-buried secrets from the past.

I don’t want to give anything else away, but I am going to saw that these characters really got under my skin, esepcially the grandmothers, who I actually found pretty infurating becausae of some of the choices they made. They definitely kept me reading though so that’s something!

As we follow the two timelines, we explore the many ways that people, and especially the Wester women, can be haunted. Yes, there are actual spirits in the book, but equally haunting are old photos, memories, secrets, and a curse that just keeps giving.

I thought the writing was just so beautiful and atmospheric, loved the hints of magical realism and the Gothic vibes, and was impressed at how much of an emotional punch, this short book (only 277 pages) packed.

Marin Ireland narrates the audiobook & perfectly captures the emotional depth & the overall haunting tone of the story. Highly recommend!

“Every book is a treasure and every time you open “Every book is a treasure and every time you open one up, you will meet new friends and take wonderful journeys to magical places.” - Dolly Parton

I read this quote in a note from Dolly to the young readers in her Imagination Library program. It comes with the final book they receive, right as they are ready to start Kindergarten.

To date, that program has gifted over 300 million books to young readers worldwide.

There’s so much to love about Dolly Parton, but as a lifelong reader, I loved what she did with this program the most. Yes, books are a treasure, and so was Dolly. May she rest in peace. 🩷🦋

⚽️ Review - KEEPING SCORE ⚽️

Authors - Brittany Kelley

Pub Date - 8/25/2026

When injuries end Michelle’s dream of playing soccer professionally, she decides that working for a professional soccer team is the next best thing. Her job as Director of Operations for the scandal-ridden L.A. Aces is super stressful though, so much so that she often sleeps in her office rather than go home and rest. When the guys on the team decide that Michelle is way too uptight and needs to learn how to relax, it is Tristan Gold, the team’s goalie, who offers to show her the way. Tristan has been pining after Michelle for ages, so this is the perfect opportunity for him to really show her how much he likes her, that is, if she’ll let him.

I love a good black cat/golden retriever romance and this one is just so good! Even though she tries so hard to resist Tristan’s charms, Michelle can’t help but be attracted to him because he’s just a walking green flag in pretty much every way. He’s sweet, flirty, supportive, and I just adored everything about him. He teases her about being so uptight, but he truly does worry about the stressful situation she is in and wants to be there for her. The two of them share incredible chemistry and engage in some of the most hilarious banter, but it’s those scenes where he takes care of her that really made me swoon. I mean, he even bakes her cookies!

Aside from the excellent spicy romance, there’s also a tremendous amount of growth as Michelle figures out what she really wants for herself, both personally and professionally. I really liked her and was rooting for her to find a healthier professional path for herself.

Another thing this book does really well is found family within the soccer team. Ted Lasso is one of my favorite shows, and the team dynamic here was giving major Ted Lasso vibes, so I was loving it!

🎤 REVIEW - I KISSED HER FIRST 🎤

Author - Betty Cayouette

Pub Date - 8/25/2026

I Kissed Her First is a sapphic, new adult romance that follows Riley, a private chef, and Luna, a rising pop star, as they set out on tour together all over Europe.

Riley and Luna actually meet for the first time when they are boarding the same plane to head to Europe to get ready for the tour. They become fast friends, which shocks Riley, because how in the world is she becoming friends with someone who is famous? I loved the dynamic of their friendship, even though Luna’s manager frowned up on it since Riley is hired help and should keep a professional distance from Luna. Riley and Luna weren’t having it though and the more they hang out together as they travel across Europe throughout the summer, the more they realize they may have more than friendly feelings toward one another.

I enjoyed both of these characters and thought they both had tremendous character development. They’re both messy and conflicted, and so well drawn that they feel like real people. Riley is trying to work her way through the grief of losing her sister, which has made her put some of her career dreams on hold, while Luna is navigating her first ever feelings for a woman, while she also has a boyfriend who she wrote some of her biggest songs with. There’s some drama surrounding that storyline, especially the public scrutiny and pressure that goes along with Luna dating not only a woman, but one who isn’t a celebrity and the question of whether or not she cheated on her then boyfriend to be with this woman.

This was such a bingeable summer romance, overall light and fun but with the perfect balance of drama to keep things interesting. I really enjoyed the author’s writing and look forward to reading more from her.

😈 Review - DEMONS AND DIPLOMACY 😈

Author - Megan Frampton

Pub Date - 8/25//2026

Demons and Diplomacy is a historical paranormal romance that is set in Victorian London, shortly after the “Revelation” when many citizens revealed themselves to be species other than human. Perhaps most famously, Queen Victoria has revealed herself to be a vampire. Now that paranormal beings are more widely accepted, the Devil has decided he would like to visit London and plans to stay for a month.

Cora Hastings, the species ombudsman, is tasked with making sure the Devil’s visit goes smoothly in order to maintain diplomatic relations, but her task becomes all the more challenging when someone starts trying to kill the Devil as soon as he arrives in the city. She then must work alongside the Devil’s son, the Marquis of Hell, to figure out who the attempted assassin is, but what’s a girl to do when she finds herself unexpectedly attracted to the Devil’s son?

What great timing for this read since I’m slowly moving into my spooky season era. The whole idea of the Devil vacationing in London had me chuckling to myself, especially the way he behaved like a Diva for most of the visit.

I also enjoyed that the story has both cozy vibes as well as some higher stakes tension with the murder plot.

I think I was a little more into the murder conspiracy plot than I was the workplace romance, but I can’t deny that the Devil’s son was incredibly charming and I liked how protective he was of Cora whenever they were in dangerous situations. He was surprisingly endearing and it was easy to see why Cora struggled to fight her attraction to him.

All in all, this was a fun read with a clever and unique premise.

🎧 REVIEW - HEART OF GLASS 🎧

Author - Jennifer Hillier

Pub Date - 8/25/2026

Heart of Glass is a twisty, atmospheric thriller that is also the second book in the Wonderland series. I ended up listening to both Wonderland and Heart of Glass back-to-back and so can confirm that, although both books take place in the small town of Seaside, Washington, Heart of Glass works great as a standalone. There are some passing mentions of the lore of Wonderland amusement park, which is the specific setting of the first book, but that’s it.

Heart of Glass starts off with a bang when a man who was convicted of killing five women unexpectedly recants his confession to one of the murders, a high school student named Lorelai. Not only does this reopen Lorelai’s case, brining up horrible memories for her best firiends who are forced to relive the last time they saw their friend alive, but Hillier then cleverly weaves together several seemingly unrelated events, including a current murder investigation, some missing persons cases involving reality TV stars, and a very old cold case.

The Wonderland series is my first time reading this author and I was very impressed with how she crafts her thrillers with just the right amount of twists and turns. I especially liked how there were excerpts from interviews with the serial killer sprinkled throughout and that the multiple timelines and characters’ perspectives were easy to keep track of, even on audio without a physical copy to refer to. I also appreciated the atmospheric quality of Hillier’s writing, parricularly the way she brings the creepy town of Seaside to life. It practically feels like a character in its own right.

The audiobook cast is packed with favorites like Brittany Pressley, January LaVoy, Eunice Wong, Chris Brinkley, and Ferdellle Capistrano, who all deliver top notch performances that perfectly capture the tension, the suspense, and the atmospheric nature of the story.

🧛🏻‍♂️ Review - SUMMER COVEN 🧛🏻‍♂️

Authors - Kat Hillis & Rosiee Thor

Pub Date - 8/25//2026

As someone who isn’t quite ready to let go of summer yet, but who also loves jumping in paranormal reads as soon as fall arrives, Summer Coven was the perfect read for me! It’s the second book in the Dead & Breakfast paranormal cozy mystery series and it’s every bit as delightfully charming as the first book.

I loved coming back to Trident Falls and seeing that my favorite queer vampire couple, Arthur and Salvatore (Sal), are now doing a booming business at their bed and breakfast. Arthur and Sal’s relationship was a huge highlight for me in the first book, and I loved it just as much in this second book. Arthur is the serious one who truly takes care of everything, while Sal is really just the most quirky diva there ever was. They’re opposites in nearly every way, but somehow they just work. It was such a hoot watching them attend the local festival and eat funnel cake together and tool around town on their tandem bicycle!

As much as I adore their relationship, this installment of the series also has a great mystery storyline that also kept me entertained and invested in the overall story. A pet psychic dies under suspicious circumstances, right after Sal takes their pet cat Rumble to see her. Arthur, who aspires to be a private investigator in addition to a B&B owner, decides to try to solve the mystery himself, which leads to both some very serious amateur sleuthing around a coven of witches who has come to town for the festival, as well as some over the top shenanigans, courtesy of Sal.

I don’t want to give anything away regarding the mystery angle, but it’s a wild ride.

I’m really enjoying the way these books blend humor, heart, and mystery and hope that we’ll get more books in this series.

🌸 Review - MUTUAL DISCORD 🌸

Author - Liana De la Rosa

Pub Date - 8/18//2026

This was such an addictive read! I loved following Sofia, who is let go from her job when she dares to complain about a male coworker taking credit for her work. Sofia then drunkenly posts a rant on TikTok about a woman from history whose work and ideas were stolen by a man.

Her video goes viral and she turns it into a series called The Matildas, where she can shine the spotlight on many women from history who have been victims of what is known as The Matilda Effect, where they are forgotten or overshadowed by their male counterparts.

Her anger was so relatable, snd I was thrilled that her series, which is so empowering to women, becomes a way for her to earn a living while she decides what she wants to do next. I also loved that I got to learn about so many women from history and about the Matilda Effect, which I hadn’t heard of before. Also, very relatable was how conflicted Sofia was about whether or not to tell her family she was an influencer.

The romance of course was also a huge highlight. Sofia and Alex start out as anonymous online friends but end up meeting in person when it turns out he’s apparently dating Sofia’s best friend and therefore off limits for anything more than friendship. I didn’t agree with some of Sofia’s choices in this area, but I do love a good forbidden romance and this one has so much tension and yearning as Sofia tries to fight her growing feelings for Alex. It’s a delicious slow burn!

Lastly, both Sofia and Alex have Puerto Rican roots, and I really enjoyed getting to experience so much of this culture as Sofia helped Alex to better connect with his heritage. There are so many fun scenes with him bonding with Sofia’s parents as he experiences various Puerto Rican traditions.

This was another wonderful read from Liana De la Rosa and I can’t wait to read more from her. Highly recommend this one and her Luna Sisters trilogy!

Hey book friends! I hope your week is off to a great start and that you had a relaxing weekend with lots of reading time. Today I’m sharing some of my favorite romance books that feature the friends to lovers trope. My favorite thing about this trope is that fear that getting together romantically could ruin a wonderful friendship and all of the ensuing pining as the characters work through that fear. I also love the shared history and the respect that these characters typically have for one another since they are such good friends.

The books featured below are a mix of new releases and some that are a few years old but are still favorites. They are also mostly spicy romances since that’s what I tend to gravitate toward.

🍁 Review - THE MATCHMAKER’S COTTAGE 🍁

Author - Kat Sloane

Pub Date - 8/11//2026

The Matchmaker’s Cottage is a great choice for anyone who is ready for cozy fall vibes and a setting filled with New England small town charm!

Julia owns a secluded lakeside B&B in upstate New York. She loves what she does but it’s a struggle to make ends meet. Ethan is Julia’s estranged childhood best friend and he now works in PR, playing matchmaker for celebrities in need of good press. Julia and Ethan haven’t seen each other in years, but after a disastrous matchmaking incident that has his career in danger, Ethan desperately needs a remote Hallmark-style picturesque setting for his next project so he reaches out to Julia, who reluctantly agrees to let him use the B&B.

Something I always love about a second chance romance is the history between the two main characters, those nostalgic glimpses into their shared history, what was so good between them, and then ultimately what tears them apart. I thought the author did a wonderful job bringing this aspect of Julia and Ethan’s past to light. Feelings ran deep between them, probably deeper than they ever realize, and now that they are reluctantly reunited, old wounds are being reopened while those deep feelings start to bubble to the surface.

I really enjoyed the author’s writing, especially the vibrant descriptions of the B&B and the small town setting. I felt like I had been transported there. I also really enjoyed that the story is presented in a dual POV so that we get to know what both Julia and Ethan are feeling at any given moment.

These are flawed, messy characters with equally messy emotions and being in their heads really made what they were feeling that much more relatable. I also thought that made the tension between them feel realistic, as well as the moments they start to realize their true feelings for one another.

🗝️ REVIEW - ALCHEMY OF SOULS 🗝️

Author - Adriana Mather

Pub Date - 8/4/2026

If you’re in the mood for a read that features an atmospheric, dark academia setting, you’re going to want to check out Adriana Mather’s latest YA romantasy, Alchemy of Souls!

Eloise and Graydon come from the opposite social classes and have nothing in common aside from magical abilities. He’s elite, while she’s from the working class. When they are taking their entrance exams to the magical academy they both hope to attend, something goes wrong and they somehow end up bound together and to an elusive ancient magical key. Since it seems Eloise and Graydon together are the only ones who can make the key appear, they are forced by the school’s administration to team up to try to locate the key again.

This was such an entertaining story! I always enjoy a dark academia setting and thought the author did a wonderful job with both the world building and the magic system. I thought the magic system was unique but also very easy to understand, and the worldbuilding was so vivid I felt like I was at the school following the key’s clues along with Eloise and Graydon.

I love the forced proximity trope and thought it was used well here, along with the fake dating trope, as Eloise and Graydon pretend to be dating as a cover for why they’re spending so much time together. It was also great fun watching the two of them grow closer as they work together. There’s a lot of tension between them that ultimately gives way to attraction. My only gripe was that the story takes place over just a few weeks and I would have loved more time with these characters to get to know them better. I loved them both but just wanted a little more.

Stacy Carolan and Caitlan Kelly narrate the audiobook and both turn in wonderful performances. Sometimes I struggle to listen to fantasy books on audio, but I thought this one was so easy to follow and I binged it in a couple of sittings.

🎭 Review - IN WHAT WORLD 🎭

Author - Bridget Morrissey

Pub Date - 8/11//2026

I’m not usually much of a sci-fi/speculative fiction reader, but there’s something about time travel and the multiverse that always calls to me. So when I read that In What World is a sapphic, multiverse romance novel, I knew I had to read it. I wasn’t disappointed either. This was such a fun read!

When they were in high school together, Marlowe and Priscilla were theater kids who couldn’t stand one another. Priscilla went on to become a famous actress, while Marlowe actually works at their old school alongside their beloved former drama teacher, Dallas. Marlowe and Priscilla haven’t spoken since high school but when Dallas goes missing, the two of them are forced to work together to find him. It’s a tall order because the only real clue as to what might have happened to him is that his cell phone is sitting on top of the mysterious Memory Machine that has been backstage since Marlowe and Priscilla were students. What soon becomes clear is that Dallas for some reason has figured out how to enter the multiverse and Marlowe and Priscilla set out to find him.

I love an enemies/rivals to lovers romance and in this one, I especially enjoyed watching Marlowe and Priscilla work together to find Dallas. They may think they dislike each other, but it’s pretty obvious that there’s some mutual attraction there. It was also a great time watching them travel to various alternate realities where they encounter different versions of themselves. The more they time travel together, the closer they get and the better they work together. I also really enjoyed the high school flashback scenes so that we could see their shared history.

I thought this was such a good time as well as a heartfelt story, wrapped up in such a unique premise!
