Top Ten Tuesday – If You Like This, Try That (the Retellings edition)
Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!
This week’s TTT topic is actually Books to Read If You Love/Loved X (X can be a genre, specific book, author, movie/TV show, etc.). I decided to focus on various retellings since I enjoy them so much and because there are so many good ones out there.
If You Like This, Try That (the Retellings edition)
1. If you like Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, try these:
Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors by Sonali Dev. “It is a truth universally acknowledged that only in an overachieving Indian American family can a genius daughter be considered a black sheep…” A fun contemporary retelling featuring the aforementioned black sheep and an infuriating but sexy chef.
Ayesha at Last by Uzma Jalaluddin. “A modern-day Muslim Pride and Prejudice for a new generation of love.”
Pride and Premeditation by Tirzah Price. “A retelling of Pride and Prejudice that reimagines the iconic settings, characters, and romances in a whodunit.”

2. If you like Cinderella, try these:
Cinder by Marissa Meyer. A fairytale retelling with a sci-fi twist that features Cinderella as a mechanic…and a Cyborg.
Geekerella by Ashley Poston. Cinderella goes to the con in this fandom-fueled twist on the classic fairy tale.
If the Shoe Fits by Julie Murphy. A fun Cinderella retelling featuring plus-sized Cindy, who becomes a body positivity icon for women everywhere.

To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo.
Part of Your World: a Twisted Tale by Liz Braswell.
All three of these are origin stories for Ursula, the sea witch.

4. If you like Alice in Wonderland, try these:
Heartless by Marissa Meyer. An origin story for the Queen of Hearts
Unbirthday by Liz Braswell. “What if Wonderland was in peril and Alice was very, very late?”

5. If you like Beauty and the Beast, try these:
A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. A Beauty and the Beast retelling featuring Fae.
Bookish and the Beast by Ashley Poston. A Beauty and the Beast retelling set in the world of fandom at ExcelsiCon.

Peter and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. A fun prequel to the classic Peter Pan story.
Lost Boy by Christina Henry. The true story of Captain Hook.

8. If you like Snow White, try these:
Winter by Marissa Meyer. Snow White but with a sci fi twist
Mirror, Mirror by Jen Calonita. “What if the Evil Queen poisoned the Prince?”

9. If you like 101 Dalmatians, try these:
Hello, Cruel Heart by Maureen Johnson.
Two fun origin stories for Cruella de Vil.

10. If you like A Christmas Carol, try these:
Mr. Dickens and His Carol by Samantha Silva. A historical fiction retelling that puts Dickens in the role of Ebenezer Scrooge.
The Afterlife of Holly Chase by Cynthia Hand. “On Christmas Eve five years ago, Holly was visited by three ghosts who showed her how selfish and spoiled she’d become. They tried to convince her to mend her ways. She didn’t. And then she died. Now she’s stuck working for the top-secret company Project Scrooge–as the latest Ghost of Christmas Past.”

I love retellings, and I have actually read quite a few of these! Will definitely have to check out the rest, though!
I really need to read more of those Twisted Tales. Those are so much fun!
From your list, the only book I’ve read is Geekerella. I haven’t read many other retellings, at least not that I know of.

I became somewhat addicted to them after coming across some great Pride and Prejudice and Beauty and the Beast retellings.
Jane Steele sounds so good!

It’s a fun one!
I had no idea that the Rachel Hawkins book compares to Jane Eyre! Gotta move that one up.
That surprised me too. I didn’t find out until I actually started reading it.
Ooh yaas! I love the topic that you’ve chosen and many of the books that you’ve shared! Most are on my TBR but I’ve heard great things about them so I’m looking forward to giving them a try 🙂 Great list!
Thank you! 🙂
What a fun post! I love seeing the Ashley Poston books, I love that series😁
I love that series too. The whole con aspect of it is so much fun.
Great take on the topic, Suzanne! And this one obviously took some time. I love seeing ACOTAR up there. I usually enjoy a Beauty and the Beast retelling and ACOTAR is a favorite.
That one is definitely my favorite Beauty and the Beast retelling so far. I also like that the series started as a retelling but has grown to so much more than that.
Hand’s retelling is underrated. I thought it was fresh and wonderful. I liked what Murphy did with Cinderella too. It was nice not to have the steps being enemies in the story.
I agree that Hand’s retelling deserves more love. I loved her unique take on the classic tale.
_The Afterlife of Holly Chase_ sounds FUN.
Happy TTT!

It really is. 🙂
Such a fun post! I can never say no to a Pride and Prejudice, Cinderella or Beauty and the Beast retelling 🙂
Those are my favorites too. 🙂
I am way late to the retellings genre and have only read one…Castle of Refuge by Melanie Dickerson, it’s an Ugly Duckling retelling and I LOVED it. I need to read more but haven’t had time.
That one is new to me so I will definitely have to check it out. 🙂
Pride and Premeditation looks fun and I’ve seen that one in the bookstore too- it’s a great looking book! Love the cover design and colors.
I think the Rachel Hawkins one looks good too!
I love the cover design too. I was actually drawn to that before I even realized that it was a P&P retelling.
Oooh I love these! I have added a bunch to my list!
I hope you enjoy them. 🙂
What a great way to do this week’s TTT! I love all your fun recommendations. 🙂
Thank you. 🙂
Fun list! I’m not really into fairy tales, but I do love P&P, JANE EYRE and A CHRISTMAS CAROL and I haven’t read any of your readalikes, so I’m going to start there. Thanks for the recs.
Happy TTT!

You’re welcome. I hope you enjoy them. 🙂
A lot of these retellings are familiar, but the Cruella ones are new to me — AND I am seriously curious as to how they portray her.
The Maureen Johnson Cruella story is especially good. I really enjoyed that one.
I loved To Kill A Kingdom and Heartless! I have liked some retellings, but they do tend to be very hit or miss for me 🙂
I’ve had pretty good luck with them, although I agree that some are way better than others. Some feel like they try too hard.
