Top Ten Tuesday – Ten of My Favorite Romance Novels

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is a Freebie so with Valentine’s Day right around the corner, I thought it would be fun to share a list of my favorite romance novels.  These are all go-to recs for me when someone tells me they don’t really enjoy reading romance.  I never used to enjoy reading romance either, but these books and others like it made a believer out of me and now I consider romance to be my favorite genre of fiction, particularly contemporary romance.

Ten of My Favorite Romance Novels

1. THE BODYGUARD by Katherine Center  –  “Hannah Brooks looks more like a kindergarten teacher than somebody who could kill you with a wine bottle opener. Or a ballpoint pen. Or a dinner napkin. But the truth is, she’s an Executive Protection Agent (aka “bodyguard”), and she just got hired to protect superstar actor Jack Stapleton from his middle-aged, corgi-breeding stalker. Hannah hardly believes it, herself. But the more time she spends with Jack, the more real it all starts to seem. And there lies the heartbreak. Because it’s easy for Hannah to protect Jack. But protecting her own, long-neglected heart? That’s the hardest thing she’s ever done.”

2.  THE LOVE HYPOTHESIS by Ali Hazelwood – The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood is quite possibly the sweetest, most adorable romance novel I’ve ever read. It checked so many boxes for me (a STEM heroine, the fake dating trope, hilarious banter, and so much more) and it just had me grinning from ear to ear pretty much the entire time I was reading.

3.  LOVE AND OTHER WORDS by Christina Lauren  – “Macy Sorensen is settling into an ambitious if emotionally tepid routine: work hard as a new pediatrics resident, plan her wedding to an older, financially secure man, keep her head down and heart tucked away. But when she runs into Elliot Petropoulos—the first and only love of her life—the careful bubble she’s constructed begins to dissolve. Once upon a time, Elliot was Macy’s entire world—growing from her gangly bookish friend into the man who coaxed her heart open again after the loss of her mother…only to break it on the very night he declared his love for her…Love, loss, friendship and the betrayals of the past collide.”

4.  THE SIMPLE WILD by K.A. Tucker – “City girl Calla Fletcher attempts to reconnect with her estranged father, and unwittingly finds herself torn between her desire to return to the bustle of Toronto and a budding relationship with a rugged Alaskan pilot in this masterful new romance from acclaimed author K.A. Tucker.”

5. THE BROMANCE BOOK CLUB by Lyssa Kay Adams – “The first rule of book club: You don’t talk about book club. Welcome to the Bromance Book Club.  Distraught and desperate because his marriage is in trouble, Gavin finds help from an unlikely source: a secret romance book club made up of Nashville’s top alpha men. With the help of their current read, a steamy Regency titled Courting the Countess, the guys coach Gavin on saving his marriage. But it’ll take a lot more than flowery words and grand gestures for this hapless Romeo to find his inner hero and win back the trust of his wife.”

6. WELL MET by Jen DeLuca – “All’s faire in love and war for two sworn enemies who indulge in a harmless flirtation at the local Ren Faire in a laugh-out-loud rom-com.”

7.  AFTER I DO by Taylor Jenkins Reid – “When Lauren and Ryan’s marriage reaches the breaking point, they come up with an unconventional plan. They decide to take a year off in the hopes of finding a way to fall in love again. One year apart, and only one rule: they cannot contact each other. Aside from that, anything goes.”

8.  PART OF YOUR WORLD by Abby Jimenez – “After a wild bet, gourmet grilled-cheese sandwich, and cuddle with a baby goat, Alexis Montgomery has had her world turned upside down. The cause: Daniel Grant, a ridiculously hot carpenter who’s ten years younger than her and as casual as they come—the complete opposite of sophisticated city-girl Alexis. And yet their chemistry is undeniable. While her ultra-wealthy parents want her to carry on the family legacy of world-renowned surgeons, Alexis doesn’t need glory or fame. She’s fine with being a “mere” ER doctor. And every minute she spends with Daniel and the tight-knit town where he lives, she’s discovering just what’s really important. Yet letting their relationship become anything more than a short-term fling would mean turning her back on her family and giving up the opportunity to help thousands of people. Bringing Daniel into her world is impossible, and yet she can’t just give up the joy she’s found with him either. With so many differences between them, how can Alexis possibly choose between her world and his?”

9. RED, WHITE & ROYAL BLUE by Casey McQuiston – “First Son Alex Claremont-Diaz is the closest thing to a prince this side of the Atlantic. With his intrepid sister and the Veep’s genius granddaughter, they’re the White House Trio, a beautiful millennial marketing strategy for his mother, President Ellen Claremont. International socialite duties do have downsides—namely, when photos of a confrontation with his longtime nemesis Prince Henry at a royal wedding leak to the tabloids and threaten American/British relations. The plan for damage control: staging a fake friendship between the First Son and the Prince. As President Claremont kicks off her reelection bid, Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret relationship with Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations. What is worth the sacrifice? How do you do all the good you can do? And, most importantly, how will history remember you?”

10. THE THINGS WE LEAVE UNFINISHED by Rebecca Yarros – “Twenty-eight-year-old Georgia Stanton has to start over after she gave up almost everything in a brutal divorce—the New York house, the friends, and her pride. Now back home at her late great-grandmother’s estate in Colorado, she finds herself face-to-face with Noah Harrison, the bestselling author of a million books where the cover is always people nearly kissing. He’s just as arrogant in person as in interviews, and she’ll be damned if the good-looking writer of love stories thinks he’s the one to finish her grandmother’s final novel…even if the publisher swears he’s the perfect fit. Noah is at the pinnacle of his career. With book and movie deals galore, there isn’t much the “golden boy” of modern fiction hasn’t accomplished. But he can’t walk away from what might be the best book of the century—the one his idol, Scarlett Stanton, left unfinished. Coming up with a fitting ending for the legendary author is one thing, but dealing with her beautiful, stubborn, cynical great-granddaughter, Georgia, is quite another. But as they read Scarlett’s words in both the manuscript and her box of letters, they start to realize why Scarlett never finished the book—it’s based on her real-life romance with a World War II pilot, and the ending isn’t a happy one. Georgia knows all too well that love never works out, and while the chemistry and connection between her and Noah is undeniable, she’s as determined as ever to learn from her great-grandmother’s mistakes—even if it means destroying Noah’s career.”

Top Ten Tuesday – My Reading and Blogging Goals for 2023

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is Bookish Goals for 2023.  I think most of these are repeats of goals I had for 2022, either because I failed at them last year or because I did okay and really want to continue to work on that same goal in the coming year.

via GIPHY

My Reading and Blogging Goals for 2023

1)  My number one goal this year is a repeat goal from the past three years and that is to read more of the books I own.  I love ARCs of course, but I hate feeling like I’m neglecting books I’ve purchased.  I lost track of how many I read last year, but I know I put a pretty good dent in the oldest unread books I own. I’m not taking part in any challenges aside from Goodreads this year but I am setting a personal goal for myself of reading 70 books I already own.  I’ve already read 4 books I own in January so hopefully that bodes well for another good year.

2)  This is also a repeat goal from 2022 and 2021.  I really want to continue to only participate in blog tours where I have already requested a review book.  I did really well with this last year, but it’s always so tempting when someone reaches out with a tour opportunity.

3)  This is also an ongoing goal since my struggle to finish series continues.  In 2022, I had a list of 3 series I wanted to finish or get caught up in and another list of 7 series that I wanted to start.  I finished none of the series from the first list and started (and finished!) one from the second list. For this year, I have 6 series on my shelf that I want to finish and 6 sitting on my shelf that I want to start.

Series I Want to Finish or Get Caught Up On:

  • Lifelike by Jay Kristoff (2 books left)
  • The Aurora Cycle (2 books left)
  • The Inheritance Games (2 books left)
  • City of Brass (2 books left)
  • Crescent City (Re-read book 1, then read book 2)
  • Bridgerton (5 books left)

Series I Want to Start:

  • The Consortium Rebellion
  • Six Crimson Cranes
  • The Celestial Kingdom
  • The Great Library
  • The Invisible Library
  • The Bloodsworn Saga

4)  This is also a repeat goal from the past two years.  I really want to continue to grow my Bookstagram account.  Last year was my most consistent year since I started the account so I really want to build on that. Posting more and engaging more with other accounts are my two hot items this year.  If you have a bookstagram account and are not already following me, you can give me a follow at https://instagram.com/thebookishlibra

5)  Re-reading more.  This is also a repeat goal and one I failed at in 2022.  To keep it low pressure, I’m setting a personal goal of 1 re-read a month.  Below are the books I’m hoping to re-read.  Some are old favorites, while others are series books I need to re-read in order to facilitate goal #3 above.

  • House of Earth and Blood
  • Aurora Rising
  • Ninth House
  • The Handmaid’s Tale
  • The Invisible Life of Addie Larue
  • The Chronicles of Narnia (5 books) – I did manage to re-read the second book in the series in 2022.
  • Pride and Prejudice
  • Jane Eyre

6) I am aiming to keep my Netgalley percentage at 85% or above in 2022.  I did very well with this goal in 2022, finishing the year at 95%.  I know I can’t keep it that high, but if I could maintain 85, I’d consider that a success.

7)  I say this every year, but in 2023, I want to read more Nonfiction.  Most years I only read maybe 1 or 2 nonfiction books.  I’m setting a personal goal of 1 nonfiction book every two months. Here’s a list of some of the titles I’m hoping to read:

  • What Unites Us by Dan Rather
  • The Light We Carry by Michelle Obama
  • We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
  • Code Girls: The Untold Story of the American Women Code Breakers Who Helped Win WWII by Liza Mundy
  • D-Day Girls: The Spies Who Armed the Resistance, Sabotaged the Nazis, and Helped Win WWII by Sarah Rose
  • Spare by Prince Harry
  • Untamed by Glennon Doyle
  • Where the Light Enters, Building a Family, Discovering Myself by Jill Biden

8)  This is a forever goal, haha.  In 2023, I really want to work on being better organized, particularly when it comes to blogging ahead.  I’m usually frantically writing posts the night before I want to post them and I would love to be able to get most, if not all, of my posts for the week done the weekend before.

9)  Revisit Shakespeare.  This is yet another repeat from last year because honestly I forgot about it and my son’s class put minimal effort into reading Romeo and Juliet.  I don’t know if Shakespeare just isn’t being taught as much these days as it was when I was in high school or if his class was the exception, but it surprised me how quckly they breezed past it.  So yeah, if I revisit the Bard this year, it will just be for me rather than to have any meaningful conversations with the kid about him, haha.

10) I am doing the Goodreads Challenge and have set my goal at 175 books.  I read 233 books in 2022 and could probably replicate that this year since we have cancelled our cable TV.  I stream a few shows here and there, but for the most part, I spend almost all of my downtime reading.  But to keep it from being too stressful, although still challenging, I’m aiming for 175.

Do we share any bookish goals this year?

This week’s TTT topic is Books I Hope Santa Brings This Year.  This is probably the easiest topic of the year for me since books and preorders are the main things I ask for every year for Christmas.  This time around I have seven books that are already out in the world that I’m hoping will be under my tree on Christmas morning.  It’s a mix of backlist titles from favorite authors and more recent releases that I’ve been persuaded I need to read by fellow bloggers.  The last three books are preorders of favorite authors I’d love to receive. I’ve actively been taking advantage of those BOGO sales at Target and Barnes and Noble since those always include preorders, but these are three I haven’t purchased for myself yet.

This week’s TTT topic is Cozy Reads (Share books that give off a cozy vibe, whether through atmosphere, setting, or some other factor. Please tell us why they’re cozy for you, too!). For me, there are a few different ways a book can create a cozy vibe for me.  First, there are books like Once Upon a River and The Rules of Magic whose writing is just so atmospheric that it makes me want to cozy up in a blanket by the fire and read them.  Second, there are books like The House in the Cerulean Sea and The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches that have such a strong found family element to them that just warms my heart.  Third, there are books like The Maid that although not technically a cozy mystery, they certainly read like one. And lastly, there are books like those from Amy E. Reichert and Freya Sampson who are both featured twice on my list, as well as those from Poppy Alexander, whose books are just such beautiful gems that leave me grinning from ear to ear and sometimes even crying happy tears by the time I’m finished.
