MY REVIEW:

Ashley Woodfolk’s The Beauty That Remains is one of the most moving books I’ve read in a long time.  It is a story about love and loss and how overwhelming the grieving process can be.  In some ways because of its subject matter, it was a difficult book to read.  I felt my heart absolutely breaking for the characters in this book over and over again because their grief was so palpable. At the same time, however, I thought it was a beautiful read with an important message about how we all grieve in our own way and in our own time, and I thought Woodfolk did a beautiful job of exploring that as she takes us through the grieving process of three teenagers who have lost someone close to them.

The book follows Autumn whose best friend Tavia recently died in a car accident, Shay who is dealing with the loss of her twin sister Sasha to leukemia, and Logan, whose ex-boyfriend Bram has committed suicide.  As soon as we meet each of them, it becomes clear that they are really struggling to cope with the loss of their loved ones.  Autumn spends more time at Tavia’s home than she does her own now and also sends emails to her dead friend’s Gmail account almost every day because she doesn’t feel like she can talk to anyone else about how lost she feels.  Shay is struggling, not just because looking at her own face in the mirror every day is a constant reminder that she has lost the person closest to her in the whole world, but also because she just doesn’t feel like she knows how to live or where she fits in without Sasha by her side.  She feels awkward around their mutual friends, and then there’s the music review blog she and Sasha ran together.  Shay can barely imagine trying to move forward with that without Sasha, whose reviews were the heart and soul of the blog.  Logan is not only mourning the loss of Bram who he’s pretty sure he was in love with, but he is also wracked with guilt because he and Bram had a huge fight and Logan said some awful things to him that he never got the chance to apologize for.  Logan is barely hanging on and starts drinking to cope with his emotions.

As Autumn, Shay, and Logan withdraw from their friends and family and bottle up their emotions, we see firsthand just how messy and ugly grief can be.  Woodfolk takes us deep into the psyche of these grieving teens and shows us exactly what they won’t share with those around them:  all of those haunting ‘what ifs’ –  what if we hadn’t fought, what if I hadn’t said those awful words, what if I had gone to the party with her, what if….

Powerful and authentic presentation.  I think what I liked most about this book is the way Woodfolk presents three completely different journeys of grief and healing to show just how truly individual the grieving process is.  Autumn, Shay, and Logan each experience their own unique array of emotions and develop their own mechanisms for coping with their loss.  Some of the emotions and coping mechanisms are of course healthier than others, but what each of them goes through just feels so authentic.  At times I felt like I was right there either grieving with them or wishing I could say something to take away their pain.

An emotionally devastating book that still manages to have a beautiful and positive message.  Even though this book was at times emotionally draining just because its subject matter is so difficult and intense, I still thought it radiated such a positive message overall.  Woodfolk shows us that no matter how dark a tunnel you find yourself in after losing a loved one, there is still light at the end of it.  You just have to keep pushing through at your own pace until you get there.  And you can’t do it alone.  You need the love and support of the ones you keep pushing away.  And of course you’ll always miss the person that you lost, but you can still heal and move forward.  Your loved one would want that for you.

The healing power of music.  Even though all of the teens in this book expressed their grief in different ways, they still had one thing in common on their journey to healing…music.  Music in the form of a local rock band called Unraveling Lovely is the thread that connects these three individual journeys of grief.  I’ve always found music to be cathartic and healing so I loved that it played such a central role in this book and helped these teens find their way through the darkness.

I had a couple of small issues with The Beauty That Remains but nothing so big that it took away from my enjoyment of the overall story.

Autumn has a budding romance with Dante, the brother of her deceased best friend, and I was torn about that.  On the one hand, it was nice to see Autumn and Dante talk to each other about the loss of Tavia, especially since they weren’t really talking to anyone else about it.  At the same time, however, every time their meetings took a romantic turn, the romance just felt out of place.

I also occasionally had trouble keeping all of the character’s names straight and kept mixing up who the survivors were and who the deceased were.  I’d have to refresh my memory each time I picked the book up again.  I think that was my own fault though because the book got to me so much emotionally.  I happened to be reading The Beauty That Remains the same week that 17 students and faculty members lost their lives at a high school in Parkland, Florida.  The book just hit me all the harder as I thought about what the students, parents, and administrators at the school must be going through and so I could only read a little at a time before I just needed to take a breather.  I think if I been able to read it straight through without stopping so much, keeping the names straight wouldn’t have been an issue.

Through her characters and their experiences in The Beauty That Remains, Woodfolk gently reminds us all that there isn’t a right or a wrong way to grieve when you lose someone you love.  We all grieve in different ways and some of us take longer to heal than others, but as long as we keep moving forward, eventually there is light at the end of the tunnel.

GOODREADS SYNOPSIS:

Music brought Autumn, Shay, and Logan together. Death wants to tear them apart.

Autumn always knew exactly who she was—a talented artist and a loyal friend. Shay was defined by two things: her bond with her twin sister, Sasha, and her love of music. And Logan always turned to writing love songs when his love life was a little less than perfect.

But when tragedy strikes each of them, somehow music is no longer enough. Now Logan can’t stop watching vlogs of his dead ex-boyfriend. Shay is a music blogger struggling to keep it together. And Autumn sends messages that she knows can never be answered.

Despite the odds, one band’s music will reunite them and prove that after grief, beauty thrives in the people left behind.

Even though I’m already taking part in a backlist challenge, I had a poor showing in February and only finished 3 of my backlisted books.  I decided to take part in the March 2018 Take Control of Your TBR Pile Challenge, hosted by  Kimberly at Caffeinated Reviewer because I think it will be a great way to jumpstart my backlist reading again.

TENTATIVE READING LIST

I hope I’m not being over ambitious, but I’m setting a goal of 10 backlist books to read this month.  I’ve come up with a tentative reading list, but this is subject to change since I’m such a mood reader.  As of this moment, I’m in the mood to read the following titles, all published prior to March 1, 2018, per the rules:

Top Ten Tuesday – Top 10 Books I Could Re-Read Forever

February 27, 2018/58 Comments/by Suzanne

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is Top Ten Books I Could Re-Read Forever.  This is going to have a few repeats from my discussion post last week where I talked about books I love to pick up when I’m in  a reading slump.  Books I could re-read forever would definitely fit into that category.  I’d definitely say my list is a mix of old favorites when I was in school and newer favorites that I’ve read since I started blogging, so there’s a blend of the fresh and new and the nostalgic.  There are magical reads, dramatic reads, and yes, I know you’ll be shocked, but even a romance or two! And yes, I also snuck a few series in there as well, one of which, The Winternight Trilogy, still has a book that hasn’t even come out yet but I can already tell it’s destined to be a favorite series of mine.  🙂

Hi, I'm Suzanne. Proofreader by day, book blogger by night, devourer of books 24/7. My reading tastes: Basically you name it, I probably like it. I read a lot of contemporary and historical, both adult and YA, and I've also been enjoying more and more fantasy lately. Hobbies include: buying and hoarding of books, rambling about books to anyone who will listen, and trying to recommend books to my family and friends whether they are readers or not - because seriously, how can you not love to read books?

BOOKSTAGRAM

“Every book is a treasure and every time you open “Every book is a treasure and every time you open one up, you will meet new friends and take wonderful journeys to magical places.” - Dolly Parton

I read this quote in a note from Dolly to the young readers in her Imagination Library program. It comes with the final book they receive, right as they are ready to start Kindergarten.

To date, that program has gifted over 300 million books to young readers worldwide.

There’s so much to love about Dolly Parton, but as a lifelong reader, I loved what she did with this program the most. Yes, books are a treasure, and so was Dolly. May she rest in peace. 🩷🦋

⚽️ Review - KEEPING SCORE ⚽️

Authors - Brittany Kelley

Pub Date - 8/25/2026

When injuries end Michelle’s dream of playing soccer professionally, she decides that working for a professional soccer team is the next best thing. Her job as Director of Operations for the scandal-ridden L.A. Aces is super stressful though, so much so that she often sleeps in her office rather than go home and rest. When the guys on the team decide that Michelle is way too uptight and needs to learn how to relax, it is Tristan Gold, the team’s goalie, who offers to show her the way. Tristan has been pining after Michelle for ages, so this is the perfect opportunity for him to really show her how much he likes her, that is, if she’ll let him.

I love a good black cat/golden retriever romance and this one is just so good! Even though she tries so hard to resist Tristan’s charms, Michelle can’t help but be attracted to him because he’s just a walking green flag in pretty much every way. He’s sweet, flirty, supportive, and I just adored everything about him. He teases her about being so uptight, but he truly does worry about the stressful situation she is in and wants to be there for her. The two of them share incredible chemistry and engage in some of the most hilarious banter, but it’s those scenes where he takes care of her that really made me swoon. I mean, he even bakes her cookies!

Aside from the excellent spicy romance, there’s also a tremendous amount of growth as Michelle figures out what she really wants for herself, both personally and professionally. I really liked her and was rooting for her to find a healthier professional path for herself.

Another thing this book does really well is found family within the soccer team. Ted Lasso is one of my favorite shows, and the team dynamic here was giving major Ted Lasso vibes, so I was loving it!

Highly recommend Keeping Score for fans of:

🎤 REVIEW - I KISSED HER FIRST 🎤

Author - Betty Cayouette

Pub Date - 8/25/2026

I Kissed Her First is a sapphic, new adult romance that follows Riley, a private chef, and Luna, a rising pop star, as they set out on tour together all over Europe.

Riley and Luna actually meet for the first time when they are boarding the same plane to head to Europe to get ready for the tour. They become fast friends, which shocks Riley, because how in the world is she becoming friends with someone who is famous? I loved the dynamic of their friendship, even though Luna’s manager frowned up on it since Riley is hired help and should keep a professional distance from Luna. Riley and Luna weren’t having it though and the more they hang out together as they travel across Europe throughout the summer, the more they realize they may have more than friendly feelings toward one another.

I enjoyed both of these characters and thought they both had tremendous character development. They’re both messy and conflicted, and so well drawn that they feel like real people. Riley is trying to work her way through the grief of losing her sister, which has made her put some of her career dreams on hold, while Luna is navigating her first ever feelings for a woman, while she also has a boyfriend who she wrote some of her biggest songs with. There’s some drama surrounding that storyline, especially the public scrutiny and pressure that goes along with Luna dating not only a woman, but one who isn’t a celebrity and the question of whether or not she cheated on her then boyfriend to be with this woman.

This was such a bingeable summer romance, overall light and fun but with the perfect balance of drama to keep things interesting. I really enjoyed the author’s writing and look forward to reading more from her.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

❓QOTD - Riley’s specialty dishes are seafood-based from where she grew up cooking with her dads at their Lobster Shack in Provincetown. What’s your favorite dish to order when you go out to eat?

😈 Review - DEMONS AND DIPLOMACY 😈

Author - Megan Frampton

Pub Date - 8/25//2026

Demons and Diplomacy is a historical paranormal romance that is set in Victorian London, shortly after the “Revelation” when many citizens revealed themselves to be species other than human. Perhaps most famously, Queen Victoria has revealed herself to be a vampire. Now that paranormal beings are more widely accepted, the Devil has decided he would like to visit London and plans to stay for a month.

Cora Hastings, the species ombudsman, is tasked with making sure the Devil’s visit goes smoothly in order to maintain diplomatic relations, but her task becomes all the more challenging when someone starts trying to kill the Devil as soon as he arrives in the city. She then must work alongside the Devil’s son, the Marquis of Hell, to figure out who the attempted assassin is, but what’s a girl to do when she finds herself unexpectedly attracted to the Devil’s son?

What great timing for this read since I’m slowly moving into my spooky season era. The whole idea of the Devil vacationing in London had me chuckling to myself, especially the way he behaved like a Diva for most of the visit.

I also enjoyed that the story has both cozy vibes as well as some higher stakes tension with the murder plot.

I think I was a little more into the murder conspiracy plot than I was the workplace romance, but I can’t deny that the Devil’s son was incredibly charming and I liked how protective he was of Cora whenever they were in dangerous situations. He was surprisingly endearing and it was easy to see why Cora struggled to fight her attraction to him.

All in all, this was a fun read with a clever and unique premise.

❓QOTD - What’s your current read about and are you enjoying it?

🎧 REVIEW - HEART OF GLASS 🎧

Author - Jennifer Hillier

Pub Date - 8/25/2026

Heart of Glass is a twisty, atmospheric thriller that is also the second book in the Wonderland series. I ended up listening to both Wonderland and Heart of Glass back-to-back and so can confirm that, although both books take place in the small town of Seaside, Washington, Heart of Glass works great as a standalone. There are some passing mentions of the lore of Wonderland amusement park, which is the specific setting of the first book, but that’s it.

Heart of Glass starts off with a bang when a man who was convicted of killing five women unexpectedly recants his confession to one of the murders, a high school student named Lorelai. Not only does this reopen Lorelai’s case, brining up horrible memories for her best firiends who are forced to relive the last time they saw their friend alive, but Hillier then cleverly weaves together several seemingly unrelated events, including a current murder investigation, some missing persons cases involving reality TV stars, and a very old cold case.

The Wonderland series is my first time reading this author and I was very impressed with how she crafts her thrillers with just the right amount of twists and turns. I especially liked how there were excerpts from interviews with the serial killer sprinkled throughout and that the multiple timelines and characters’ perspectives were easy to keep track of, even on audio without a physical copy to refer to. I also appreciated the atmospheric quality of Hillier’s writing, parricularly the way she brings the creepy town of Seaside to life. It practically feels like a character in its own right.

The audiobook cast is packed with favorites like Brittany Pressley, January LaVoy, Eunice Wong, Chris Brinkley, and Ferdellle Capistrano, who all deliver top notch performances that perfectly capture the tension, the suspense, and the atmospheric nature of the story.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

❓QOTD - Are there any cold cases that you follow? Or are you a reality TV fan? If so, what shows? Or current read?

🧛🏻‍♂️ Review - SUMMER COVEN 🧛🏻‍♂️

Authors - Kat Hillis & Rosiee Thor

Pub Date - 8/25//2026

As someone who isn’t quite ready to let go of summer yet, but who also loves jumping in paranormal reads as soon as fall arrives, Summer Coven was the perfect read for me! It’s the second book in the Dead & Breakfast paranormal cozy mystery series and it’s every bit as delightfully charming as the first book.

I loved coming back to Trident Falls and seeing that my favorite queer vampire couple, Arthur and Salvatore (Sal), are now doing a booming business at their bed and breakfast. Arthur and Sal’s relationship was a huge highlight for me in the first book, and I loved it just as much in this second book. Arthur is the serious one who truly takes care of everything, while Sal is really just the most quirky diva there ever was. They’re opposites in nearly every way, but somehow they just work. It was such a hoot watching them attend the local festival and eat funnel cake together and tool around town on their tandem bicycle!

As much as I adore their relationship, this installment of the series also has a great mystery storyline that also kept me entertained and invested in the overall story. A pet psychic dies under suspicious circumstances, right after Sal takes their pet cat Rumble to see her. Arthur, who aspires to be a private investigator in addition to a B&B owner, decides to try to solve the mystery himself, which leads to both some very serious amateur sleuthing around a coven of witches who has come to town for the festival, as well as some over the top shenanigans, courtesy of Sal.

I don’t want to give anything away regarding the mystery angle, but it’s a wild ride.

I’m really enjoying the way these books blend humor, heart, and mystery and hope that we’ll get more books in this series.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

❓QOTD - Have you been to any fairs or festivals recently? What’s your favorite part about them?

AOTD - I haven’t been in a while but I do enjoy our state fair for the food. Funnel cakes and fried Oreos are my faves.

🌸 Review - MUTUAL DISCORD 🌸

Author - Liana De la Rosa

Pub Date - 8/18//2026

This was such an addictive read! I loved following Sofia, who is let go from her job when she dares to complain about a male coworker taking credit for her work. Sofia then drunkenly posts a rant on TikTok about a woman from history whose work and ideas were stolen by a man.

Her video goes viral and she turns it into a series called The Matildas, where she can shine the spotlight on many women from history who have been victims of what is known as The Matilda Effect, where they are forgotten or overshadowed by their male counterparts.

Her anger was so relatable, snd I was thrilled that her series, which is so empowering to women, becomes a way for her to earn a living while she decides what she wants to do next. I also loved that I got to learn about so many women from history and about the Matilda Effect, which I hadn’t heard of before. Also, very relatable was how conflicted Sofia was about whether or not to tell her family she was an influencer.

The romance of course was also a huge highlight. Sofia and Alex start out as anonymous online friends but end up meeting in person when it turns out he’s apparently dating Sofia’s best friend and therefore off limits for anything more than friendship. I didn’t agree with some of Sofia’s choices in this area, but I do love a good forbidden romance and this one has so much tension and yearning as Sofia tries to fight her growing feelings for Alex. It’s a delicious slow burn!

Lastly, both Sofia and Alex have Puerto Rican roots, and I really enjoyed getting to experience so much of this culture as Sofia helped Alex to better connect with his heritage. There are so many fun scenes with him bonding with Sofia’s parents as he experiences various Puerto Rican traditions.

This was another wonderful read from Liana De la Rosa and I can’t wait to read more from her. Highly recommend this one and her Luna Sisters trilogy!

Hey book friends! I hope your week is off to a great start and that you had a relaxing weekend with lots of reading time. Today I’m sharing some of my favorite romance books that feature the friends to lovers trope. My favorite thing about this trope is that fear that getting together romantically could ruin a wonderful friendship and all of the ensuing pining as the characters work through that fear. I also love the shared history and the respect that these characters typically have for one another since they are such good friends.

The books featured below are a mix of new releases and some that are a few years old but are still favorites. They are also mostly spicy romances since that’s what I tend to gravitate toward.

🍁 Review - THE MATCHMAKER’S COTTAGE 🍁

Author - Kat Sloane

Pub Date - 8/11//2026

The Matchmaker’s Cottage is a great choice for anyone who is ready for cozy fall vibes and a setting filled with New England small town charm!

Julia owns a secluded lakeside B&B in upstate New York. She loves what she does but it’s a struggle to make ends meet. Ethan is Julia’s estranged childhood best friend and he now works in PR, playing matchmaker for celebrities in need of good press. Julia and Ethan haven’t seen each other in years, but after a disastrous matchmaking incident that has his career in danger, Ethan desperately needs a remote Hallmark-style picturesque setting for his next project so he reaches out to Julia, who reluctantly agrees to let him use the B&B.

Something I always love about a second chance romance is the history between the two main characters, those nostalgic glimpses into their shared history, what was so good between them, and then ultimately what tears them apart. I thought the author did a wonderful job bringing this aspect of Julia and Ethan’s past to light. Feelings ran deep between them, probably deeper than they ever realize, and now that they are reluctantly reunited, old wounds are being reopened while those deep feelings start to bubble to the surface.

I really enjoyed the author’s writing, especially the vibrant descriptions of the B&B and the small town setting. I felt like I had been transported there. I also really enjoyed that the story is presented in a dual POV so that we get to know what both Julia and Ethan are feeling at any given moment.

These are flawed, messy characters with equally messy emotions and being in their heads really made what they were feeling that much more relatable. I also thought that made the tension between them feel realistic, as well as the moments they start to realize their true feelings for one another.

🗝️ REVIEW - ALCHEMY OF SOULS 🗝️

Author - Adriana Mather

Pub Date - 8/4/2026

If you’re in the mood for a read that features an atmospheric, dark academia setting, you’re going to want to check out Adriana Mather’s latest YA romantasy, Alchemy of Souls!

Eloise and Graydon come from the opposite social classes and have nothing in common aside from magical abilities. He’s elite, while she’s from the working class. When they are taking their entrance exams to the magical academy they both hope to attend, something goes wrong and they somehow end up bound together and to an elusive ancient magical key. Since it seems Eloise and Graydon together are the only ones who can make the key appear, they are forced by the school’s administration to team up to try to locate the key again.

This was such an entertaining story! I always enjoy a dark academia setting and thought the author did a wonderful job with both the world building and the magic system. I thought the magic system was unique but also very easy to understand, and the worldbuilding was so vivid I felt like I was at the school following the key’s clues along with Eloise and Graydon.

I love the forced proximity trope and thought it was used well here, along with the fake dating trope, as Eloise and Graydon pretend to be dating as a cover for why they’re spending so much time together. It was also great fun watching the two of them grow closer as they work together. There’s a lot of tension between them that ultimately gives way to attraction. My only gripe was that the story takes place over just a few weeks and I would have loved more time with these characters to get to know them better. I loved them both but just wanted a little more.

Stacy Carolan and Caitlan Kelly narrate the audiobook and both turn in wonderful performances. Sometimes I struggle to listen to fantasy books on audio, but I thought this one was so easy to follow and I binged it in a couple of sittings.

🎭 Review - IN WHAT WORLD 🎭

Author - Bridget Morrissey

Pub Date - 8/11//2026

I’m not usually much of a sci-fi/speculative fiction reader, but there’s something about time travel and the multiverse that always calls to me. So when I read that In What World is a sapphic, multiverse romance novel, I knew I had to read it. I wasn’t disappointed either. This was such a fun read!

When they were in high school together, Marlowe and Priscilla were theater kids who couldn’t stand one another. Priscilla went on to become a famous actress, while Marlowe actually works at their old school alongside their beloved former drama teacher, Dallas. Marlowe and Priscilla haven’t spoken since high school but when Dallas goes missing, the two of them are forced to work together to find him. It’s a tall order because the only real clue as to what might have happened to him is that his cell phone is sitting on top of the mysterious Memory Machine that has been backstage since Marlowe and Priscilla were students. What soon becomes clear is that Dallas for some reason has figured out how to enter the multiverse and Marlowe and Priscilla set out to find him.

I love an enemies/rivals to lovers romance and in this one, I especially enjoyed watching Marlowe and Priscilla work together to find Dallas. They may think they dislike each other, but it’s pretty obvious that there’s some mutual attraction there. It was also a great time watching them travel to various alternate realities where they encounter different versions of themselves. The more they time travel together, the closer they get and the better they work together. I also really enjoyed the high school flashback scenes so that we could see their shared history.

I thought this was such a good time as well as a heartfelt story, wrapped up in such a unique premise!

🐶 ONE More Chapter 🐶 Thanks so much to @purinaone 🐶 ONE More Chapter 🐶

Thanks so much to @purinaone_us for sending me this package of fun bookish goodies #gifted and inviting me to share my ONE More Chapter moment with my favorite furry reading buddy!

While I am definitely a booklover, one of my other loves is my golden retriever, Winston. Winston is seven years old, and he’s almost always by my side when I sit down to read. Well, based on one of my photos, he might just be there in hopes that I spill my snacks. 😂

He’s also probably one of the reasons why I read so much because, honestly, who can bear to disturb their reading buddy when he comes and lays on your lap, like the 75 pound lapdog that he is? 🩷

Thanks again, Purina One!

❓QOTD - Do you have any furry reading buddies?

AOTD - Aside from Winston, I also have a black & white tuxedo cat named Ninja. He wouldn’t cooperate for photos today. 😆
