ROM COM Reviews: THE SOULMATE EQUATION & ROSALINE PALMER TAKES THE CAKE

May 14, 2021/28 Comments/by Suzanne

Happy Friday!  We’ve made it through another week and I don’t know about you but I’m so ready for the weekend.  We are short-staffed at work yet again and it’s kicking my butt. I also don’t know about you, but I have so many books to review that are coming out on May 25th.  I’ve been reading as fast as I can but still have 4 to get through between now and then so I can review them.  There are definitely worse problems to have so I won’t complain. I just hope I can get them all read in time!  Anyway, today I’m sharing my thoughts on two fun and fabulous rom-coms that come out on May 18th, The Soulmate Equation by Christina Lauren and Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake by Alexis Hall.

ROM COM Reviews: THE SOULMATE EQUATION & ROSALINE PALMER TAKES THE CAKEThe Soulmate Equation Goodreads

Author: Christina Lauren

Publication Date: May 18, 2021

Publisher:  Gallery Books

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley.  All opinions are my own.

Before I started reading Christina Lauren’s novels, I was not the biggest fan of romance books.  With their lovable characters, often hilarious banter, and addictive storylines, they won me over and now I can’t get enough of their books.  Their latest, The Soulmate Equation, is the tenth book I’ve read from them and I’m happy to say it’s one of my favorites yet.

The story follows Jess Davis, who is a freelance statistician.  Her passion is crunching numbers all day.  Abandoned by her mother at a young age and raised by her grandparents, Jess is now a single mom raising a 7-year-old daughter. Between her career and her daughter, Jess has no time or interest in dating.  I really liked Jess right away.  She’s a STEM girl, which I loved, and I also loved both her devotion to her adorable daughter, Juno, and her fierce sense of independence.   All of that said, I also loved that her curiosity about the data and the science behind a new DNA-based dating app called GeneticAlly leads her to actually submit a sample of her DNA to see if it actually works.  Even though she’s all about science and numbers, when she is found to be 98% compatible with another subject in the database, she is skeptical, especially because she has actually met the guy and can’t stand him!

The guy is Dr. River Pena, the sexy scientist who is the brains behind the GeneticAlly app.  Jess makes a snap judgment about River because she sees him at the local coffee shop every day and he doesn’t speak to anyone.  She thinks he’s arrogant, rude, and obnoxious, but as she starts to get to know him, she realizes she may have been a bit hasty and overly harsh in her initial assessment.  I loved watching Jess get to know River.  It becomes clear that what she deemed arrogant and rude was actually just him being shy and awkward.  The more they talk and interact, the more Jess starts to wonder if there’s any merit to that 98% compatibility score.  As much as I liked Jess, I have to say that I flat out adored everything about River, especially the way he interacts with Jess’ daughter, Juno, when he meets her. They are adorable together, which made it impossible not to root for a happy ending for River and Jess since it would mean a father figure for Juno as well.

The actual DNA science and how that worked was a little over my head at times, but I didn’t care.  I was so into Jess and River and their journey that I flew through the pages, smiling all the way.  With The Soulmate Equation, I think it’s safe to say Christina Lauren have another hit on their hands for romance fans.  4 STARS

ROM COM Reviews: THE SOULMATE EQUATION & ROSALINE PALMER TAKES THE CAKERosaline Palmer Takes the Cake Goodreads

Author: Alexis Hall

Publication Date: May 18, 2021

Publisher:  Forever (Grand Central Publishing)

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley.  All opinions are my own.

I just finished reading Alexis Hall’s last novel, Boyfriend Material, a couple of months ago and loved it, so I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy of her latest, Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake, the first book in a new queer romcom series called Winner Bakes All.  The lure of a reality TV baking competition and its potential for hilarious antics was just impossible to resist!

The story follows Rosaline Palmer, a single mom who has found herself in a dead end job after choosing to drop out of college to raise her daughter, Amelie.  Rosaline does not in any way regret her decision to do this but she really wishes she could do something to give her daughter a better life than she currently has.  When she hears about a reality TV baking competition, she thinks this could be exactly what she needs to turn things around, and so she applies and is selected to be a contestant.  The competition is fierce, and the judges can be harsh in their criticism, but Rosaline is convinced she has what it takes to go all the way.

Rosaline is such a great protagonist.  I loved pretty much everything about her.  She’s bisexual and very open about her sexuality, even to the point that her young daughter has been raised to know what it means to be bisexual and that it’s absolutely normal.  Rosaline is like this in every aspect of life with Amelie and is raising a very precocious, open-minded young lady.  Watching Amelie in action throughout the book made me feel lots of proud mom vibes on Rosaline’s behalf.  She might be on her own but she is doing a splendid job raising her daughter.

As much as I adored the mother-daughter moments with Rosaline and Amelie, the fun and most of the action takes place at the competition and I thought every aspect of the competition was fabulous and very well executed.  The descriptions of the glorious food items being prepared practically had me drooling while I was reading, and I loved the cast of characters, from Rosaline’s fellow competitors, most of whom become like a little family by the end of the competition, to the quirky judges and the borderline insane producer.

There’s a bit of a love triangle between Rosaline and two of her fellow competitors that at first I wasn’t sure about until it became clear that it wasn’t really much of a triangle.  Rosaline meets Alain Pope while traveling to the competition and at first he seems quite charming. He’s well educated, smooth, and he certainly knows his way around a kitchen.  The more Rosaline gets to know him, however, the less appealing he seems. In fact, she finds herself way more attracted to another competitor, a less educated, super awkward and shy electrician named Harry.  You guys, I just have to say that Harry is the most adorable cinnamon roll of a leading man.  I adored everything about him, from his cute banter with Rosaline, to his delightful creations that he bakes for the competition, including a mermaid cake, and most especially the way he treats Rosaline’s daughter.  As soon as I watched Harry in action with Rosaline and her daughter, I was rooting hard for Rosaline to tell Alain to kiss off so she could be with Harry.

I don’t want to give away anything about the competition or how things turn out for Rosaline, but I will say I came away very satisfied and with a smile on my face and can’t wait to see what Alexis Hall has in store for us with the next book in this fun series. 4 STARS.

Reviews: The Good Sister & Her Dark Lies

May 13, 2021/16 Comments/by Sharon

Hi everyone!  Sharon here with another edition of Thriller Thursday. This week I am sharing my thoughts on Sally Hepworth’s domestic thriller, The Good Sister and J.T. Ellison’s mystery/thriller, Her Dark Lies. I am a fan of both of these authors and happy to say I loved both of these books.

Reviews: The Good Sister & Her Dark LiesThe Good Sister Goodreads

Author: Sally Hepworth

Publication Date: April 13, 2021

Publisher: St. Martin’s Press

I have loved all of the books I have read by Sally Hepworth, so I was very excited to read her latest book The Good Sister and it did not disappoint. This book exceeded all of my expectations and is my favorite so far.

Fern and Rose are fraternal twins who are very different from each other. Rose is the responsible one and has always taken care of Fern and protected her from their mother. Fern is on the autism spectrum, she is very sensitive to loud noises and light, she doesn’t like to be touched too much or crowds. Fern and Rose are very close and will do anything for each other. Years ago Fern did something very bad and Rose has kept that secret. Now Fern has learned that Rose cannot have children and has decided that she is going to get pregnant and give the baby to Rose. But Fern starts to realize that Rose is not the good sister she thought she was and is now rethinking about giving her baby to Rose. And that decision will have dire consequences.

This book is told from the POV of Rose through her journal pages which give us a look into what their childhood was like and also from the POV of Fern in present day, as she goes about her life and mission to give Rose a baby.

I really felt for Rose reading her journal entries. The things she endured at the hands of her mother made my heart break for her.  But my impression of Rose changed as more things were revealed and it started to become clear that Rose may not really be that much of a protector of Fern as was first thought.

Fern was my favorite, I loved her. She works in a library, so right there she is high up on my list lol. She just warmed my heart and made me laugh. Fern saw the good in everyone. Even when she started to suspect Rose did not have her best intentions in mind, she still wanted to believe that everything Rose did was for Fern’s protection. Fern loved working in the library, the one job she hated though was when someone needed help with the photocopier. If someone came to her for help she would pretend like she heard someone call her or act like she was on the phone. It was when she did quirky things like this that would make me laugh.

It was in the library that Fern meets another character that I loved, Wally. Though his real name was Rocco, Fern called him Wally because the clothes he wore reminded her of the character from the book ‘Where’s Wally”.  He is also socially awkward like Fern and understood her sensitivity to light and sound so when they went out he would give her noise cancelling headphones and swimming goggles to wear. I loved watching their relationship grow and from the moment they met I was hoping that Fern would get a happily ever after with him.

I really cannot say much about this book because I don’t want to spoil anything. I will say that The Good Sister is a domestic thriller that was very beautifully written, full of characters that I loved, and had me turning the pages wanting to know more about them and what was going to happen.   4 ½ stars

Reviews: The Good Sister & Her Dark LiesHer Dark Lies Goodreads

Author: J.T. Ellison

Publication Date: March 9, 2021

Publisher: Mira

J.T. Ellison’s new book Her Dark Lies was everything that I was hoping for.  From the amazing Italian setting to the secrets and lies and the dead body count, this book had everything that makes a great mystery thriller.

Claire Hunter is set to marry the wealthy Jack Compton on the Compton family’s remote island, Isle Isola, off the Italian coast. The night before they were to set off for the island someone broke into Claire and Jack’s home and Claire ended up shooting and killing the intruder. And then once they reach the island, skeleton remains have been found, Claire’s wedding dress was ruined by someone writing ‘whore’ in blood on the back of it, and more deaths occurred. It is safe to say that someone is trying to sabotage the wedding. But who? Claire and Jack both have secrets. When Claire was a teenager, her father died in a car accident that was Claire’s fault. And Jack’s first wife mysteriously died 10 years ago while they were on their honeymoon.

I loved the setting of this book and Ellison does an amazing job of describing the island and the Villa. I could picture it so vividly that it felt like I was actually there. I could imagine myself walking up the stone stairs to get to the Villa from the beach. And I could picture myself in the rooms. At times if felt like I was watching the book, rather than reading it.

We figure out early on who is behind all that is happening and to me that just added to the suspense. What are they going to do next? Why are they doing this? And the answers to those questions made this an edge of my seat read.  There was also so many twists and turns in this book that I didn’t want to put it down. Especially when the closer it got to the end, the more the body count was rising. All I could think of was “Damn! Who is going to make it off this island alive?”

The only issue I had was I didn’t really connect with any of the characters. I think they were well written, but I was so caught up in the setting of the book and all that was going on that they didn’t really pop for me. The only one that I can say had any growth was Claire. At the beginning of the book she annoyed me. Whenever something happened and she would get upset, Jack would tell her not to worry, that he and his family had everything under control, and she just went along with it and let him take care of things. But by the end of the book Claire turned into one bad ass woman. She had enough and was going to take down the person that was behind everything that was happening on the island. I actually found myself cheering for her at the end. You go Claire!   4 Stars

Top Ten Tuesday – Birds of a Feather: My Favorite Books with Birds on the Cover

May 11, 2021/28 Comments/by Suzanne

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is Books with Nature on the Cover (flowers, trees, landscapes, animals, etc.).  I decided to focus on covers that feature birds. No particular reason other than I think they’re pretty and I love the variety of birds I’ve seen on covers as well as the different ways cover designers use them. I love the covers where the bird basically takes up the entire thing but I’m also a fan of covers that use them as accents like the ones on the covers for The Nightingale and The Unhoneymooners.  I was also an over achiever this week.  I came up with 15 covers I loved and couldn’t narrow down to just 10 so decided to just share them all!

📱 Review - THE PHONE SWAP 📱

Author - Lia Louis

Pub Date - 8/25/26

When they swap seats on a flight to London, scientist Allie Lake and actor Milo Ford somehow also swap phones & don’t realize the mixup until they reach their respective destinations.

Unfortunately for Allie, who needs her phone for her work, Milo is filming on location in Romania for three weeks. She’ll have to wait until he returns to London to get her phone back. In the meantime, they agree to play secretary for one another, relaying messages.

With all of the back and forth, Allie and Milo quickly become friends and develop feelings for one another. Just before they are slated to meet in London, somehow all of their private chats end up leaked to the media, and they each blame the other and immediately break all contact until two years later when they coincidentally end up on the same scientific mission in the Arctic. Trapped together in the Arctic, Milo and Allie are forced to revisit old wounds and old feelings, which are clearly still there.

I thought the premise of this story, the swapped phones, was such a fun and unique way to have a meet cute between characters. I also loved them bonding while playing secretary for one another. They had so many fun and flirty conversations as well as some meatier conversations with emotional depth as they got to know one another better.

I also loved what felt like kismet when they end up in the Arctic together. I mean, what are the odds of Milo doing a documentary that just happens to tie in with Allie’s research?

I could have done without the miscommunication, but even though it drove me crazy, it did feel realistic for their particular situation.

Bottom line, I found both characters to be very likeable, which made the story an enjoyable read and listen overall.

Rebecca Norfolk & Nikolas Salmon are both new-to-me narrators and they did a wonderful job bringing Allie and Milo to life & capturing both the humor & the more emotional moments between them.

👻 REVIEW - Paper Ghosts 👻

Author - Sarah Addison Allen

Pub Date - 9/1//26

If you’re looking for an atmospheric read to add to your fall TBR, I want to put Paper Ghosts on your radar. It’s a multi-generational family drama that is part love story and part ghost story. Set in a small town in North Carolina, it follows several generations of women from the Wester family and the gift, or curse depending on your perspective, that they all share.

I really enjoyed the way this story unfolds in a dual timeline. The first follows Willamena Wester back in 1976 where she meets and falls in love with musician named Jack. Willahema feels trapped and overly controlled by her grandmother and makes plans to run away with Jack, a decision that ultimately takes a tragic turn. The second timeline is set in the present day and follows Bailey Wester, who is Willamena’s granddaughter. Bailey has just returned to the small North Carolina town and even though her grandmother pushed her away years ago, the two of them reluctantly reconnect now that Bailey has returned. Reconnecting though stirs up long-buried secrets from the past.

I don’t want to give anything else away, but I am going to saw that these characters really got under my skin, esepcially the grandmothers, who I actually found pretty infurating becausae of some of the choices they made. They definitely kept me reading though so that’s something!

As we follow the two timelines, we explore the many ways that people, and especially the Wester women, can be haunted. Yes, there are actual spirits in the book, but equally haunting are old photos, memories, secrets, and a curse that just keeps giving.

I thought the writing was just so beautiful and atmospheric, loved the hints of magical realism and the Gothic vibes, and was impressed at how much of an emotional punch, this short book (only 277 pages) packed.

Marin Ireland narrates the audiobook & perfectly captures the emotional depth & the overall haunting tone of the story. Highly recommend!

“Every book is a treasure and every time you open “Every book is a treasure and every time you open one up, you will meet new friends and take wonderful journeys to magical places.” - Dolly Parton

I read this quote in a note from Dolly to the young readers in her Imagination Library program. It comes with the final book they receive, right as they are ready to start Kindergarten.

To date, that program has gifted over 300 million books to young readers worldwide.

There’s so much to love about Dolly Parton, but as a lifelong reader, I loved what she did with this program the most. Yes, books are a treasure, and so was Dolly. May she rest in peace. 🩷🦋

⚽️ Review - KEEPING SCORE ⚽️

Authors - Brittany Kelley

Pub Date - 8/25/2026

When injuries end Michelle’s dream of playing soccer professionally, she decides that working for a professional soccer team is the next best thing. Her job as Director of Operations for the scandal-ridden L.A. Aces is super stressful though, so much so that she often sleeps in her office rather than go home and rest. When the guys on the team decide that Michelle is way too uptight and needs to learn how to relax, it is Tristan Gold, the team’s goalie, who offers to show her the way. Tristan has been pining after Michelle for ages, so this is the perfect opportunity for him to really show her how much he likes her, that is, if she’ll let him.

I love a good black cat/golden retriever romance and this one is just so good! Even though she tries so hard to resist Tristan’s charms, Michelle can’t help but be attracted to him because he’s just a walking green flag in pretty much every way. He’s sweet, flirty, supportive, and I just adored everything about him. He teases her about being so uptight, but he truly does worry about the stressful situation she is in and wants to be there for her. The two of them share incredible chemistry and engage in some of the most hilarious banter, but it’s those scenes where he takes care of her that really made me swoon. I mean, he even bakes her cookies!

Aside from the excellent spicy romance, there’s also a tremendous amount of growth as Michelle figures out what she really wants for herself, both personally and professionally. I really liked her and was rooting for her to find a healthier professional path for herself.

Another thing this book does really well is found family within the soccer team. Ted Lasso is one of my favorite shows, and the team dynamic here was giving major Ted Lasso vibes, so I was loving it!

Highly recommend Keeping Score for fans of:

🎤 REVIEW - I KISSED HER FIRST 🎤

Author - Betty Cayouette

Pub Date - 8/25/2026

I Kissed Her First is a sapphic, new adult romance that follows Riley, a private chef, and Luna, a rising pop star, as they set out on tour together all over Europe.

Riley and Luna actually meet for the first time when they are boarding the same plane to head to Europe to get ready for the tour. They become fast friends, which shocks Riley, because how in the world is she becoming friends with someone who is famous? I loved the dynamic of their friendship, even though Luna’s manager frowned up on it since Riley is hired help and should keep a professional distance from Luna. Riley and Luna weren’t having it though and the more they hang out together as they travel across Europe throughout the summer, the more they realize they may have more than friendly feelings toward one another.

I enjoyed both of these characters and thought they both had tremendous character development. They’re both messy and conflicted, and so well drawn that they feel like real people. Riley is trying to work her way through the grief of losing her sister, which has made her put some of her career dreams on hold, while Luna is navigating her first ever feelings for a woman, while she also has a boyfriend who she wrote some of her biggest songs with. There’s some drama surrounding that storyline, especially the public scrutiny and pressure that goes along with Luna dating not only a woman, but one who isn’t a celebrity and the question of whether or not she cheated on her then boyfriend to be with this woman.

This was such a bingeable summer romance, overall light and fun but with the perfect balance of drama to keep things interesting. I really enjoyed the author’s writing and look forward to reading more from her.

😈 Review - DEMONS AND DIPLOMACY 😈

Author - Megan Frampton

Pub Date - 8/25//2026

Demons and Diplomacy is a historical paranormal romance that is set in Victorian London, shortly after the “Revelation” when many citizens revealed themselves to be species other than human. Perhaps most famously, Queen Victoria has revealed herself to be a vampire. Now that paranormal beings are more widely accepted, the Devil has decided he would like to visit London and plans to stay for a month.

Cora Hastings, the species ombudsman, is tasked with making sure the Devil’s visit goes smoothly in order to maintain diplomatic relations, but her task becomes all the more challenging when someone starts trying to kill the Devil as soon as he arrives in the city. She then must work alongside the Devil’s son, the Marquis of Hell, to figure out who the attempted assassin is, but what’s a girl to do when she finds herself unexpectedly attracted to the Devil’s son?

What great timing for this read since I’m slowly moving into my spooky season era. The whole idea of the Devil vacationing in London had me chuckling to myself, especially the way he behaved like a Diva for most of the visit.

I also enjoyed that the story has both cozy vibes as well as some higher stakes tension with the murder plot.

I think I was a little more into the murder conspiracy plot than I was the workplace romance, but I can’t deny that the Devil’s son was incredibly charming and I liked how protective he was of Cora whenever they were in dangerous situations. He was surprisingly endearing and it was easy to see why Cora struggled to fight her attraction to him.

All in all, this was a fun read with a clever and unique premise.

🎧 REVIEW - HEART OF GLASS 🎧

Author - Jennifer Hillier

Pub Date - 8/25/2026

Heart of Glass is a twisty, atmospheric thriller that is also the second book in the Wonderland series. I ended up listening to both Wonderland and Heart of Glass back-to-back and so can confirm that, although both books take place in the small town of Seaside, Washington, Heart of Glass works great as a standalone. There are some passing mentions of the lore of Wonderland amusement park, which is the specific setting of the first book, but that’s it.

Heart of Glass starts off with a bang when a man who was convicted of killing five women unexpectedly recants his confession to one of the murders, a high school student named Lorelai. Not only does this reopen Lorelai’s case, brining up horrible memories for her best firiends who are forced to relive the last time they saw their friend alive, but Hillier then cleverly weaves together several seemingly unrelated events, including a current murder investigation, some missing persons cases involving reality TV stars, and a very old cold case.

The Wonderland series is my first time reading this author and I was very impressed with how she crafts her thrillers with just the right amount of twists and turns. I especially liked how there were excerpts from interviews with the serial killer sprinkled throughout and that the multiple timelines and characters’ perspectives were easy to keep track of, even on audio without a physical copy to refer to. I also appreciated the atmospheric quality of Hillier’s writing, parricularly the way she brings the creepy town of Seaside to life. It practically feels like a character in its own right.

The audiobook cast is packed with favorites like Brittany Pressley, January LaVoy, Eunice Wong, Chris Brinkley, and Ferdellle Capistrano, who all deliver top notch performances that perfectly capture the tension, the suspense, and the atmospheric nature of the story.

🧛🏻‍♂️ Review - SUMMER COVEN 🧛🏻‍♂️

Authors - Kat Hillis & Rosiee Thor

Pub Date - 8/25//2026

As someone who isn’t quite ready to let go of summer yet, but who also loves jumping in paranormal reads as soon as fall arrives, Summer Coven was the perfect read for me! It’s the second book in the Dead & Breakfast paranormal cozy mystery series and it’s every bit as delightfully charming as the first book.

I loved coming back to Trident Falls and seeing that my favorite queer vampire couple, Arthur and Salvatore (Sal), are now doing a booming business at their bed and breakfast. Arthur and Sal’s relationship was a huge highlight for me in the first book, and I loved it just as much in this second book. Arthur is the serious one who truly takes care of everything, while Sal is really just the most quirky diva there ever was. They’re opposites in nearly every way, but somehow they just work. It was such a hoot watching them attend the local festival and eat funnel cake together and tool around town on their tandem bicycle!

As much as I adore their relationship, this installment of the series also has a great mystery storyline that also kept me entertained and invested in the overall story. A pet psychic dies under suspicious circumstances, right after Sal takes their pet cat Rumble to see her. Arthur, who aspires to be a private investigator in addition to a B&B owner, decides to try to solve the mystery himself, which leads to both some very serious amateur sleuthing around a coven of witches who has come to town for the festival, as well as some over the top shenanigans, courtesy of Sal.

I don’t want to give anything away regarding the mystery angle, but it’s a wild ride.

I’m really enjoying the way these books blend humor, heart, and mystery and hope that we’ll get more books in this series.

🌸 Review - MUTUAL DISCORD 🌸

Author - Liana De la Rosa

Pub Date - 8/18//2026

This was such an addictive read! I loved following Sofia, who is let go from her job when she dares to complain about a male coworker taking credit for her work. Sofia then drunkenly posts a rant on TikTok about a woman from history whose work and ideas were stolen by a man.

Her video goes viral and she turns it into a series called The Matildas, where she can shine the spotlight on many women from history who have been victims of what is known as The Matilda Effect, where they are forgotten or overshadowed by their male counterparts.

Her anger was so relatable, snd I was thrilled that her series, which is so empowering to women, becomes a way for her to earn a living while she decides what she wants to do next. I also loved that I got to learn about so many women from history and about the Matilda Effect, which I hadn’t heard of before. Also, very relatable was how conflicted Sofia was about whether or not to tell her family she was an influencer.

The romance of course was also a huge highlight. Sofia and Alex start out as anonymous online friends but end up meeting in person when it turns out he’s apparently dating Sofia’s best friend and therefore off limits for anything more than friendship. I didn’t agree with some of Sofia’s choices in this area, but I do love a good forbidden romance and this one has so much tension and yearning as Sofia tries to fight her growing feelings for Alex. It’s a delicious slow burn!

Lastly, both Sofia and Alex have Puerto Rican roots, and I really enjoyed getting to experience so much of this culture as Sofia helped Alex to better connect with his heritage. There are so many fun scenes with him bonding with Sofia’s parents as he experiences various Puerto Rican traditions.

This was another wonderful read from Liana De la Rosa and I can’t wait to read more from her. Highly recommend this one and her Luna Sisters trilogy!

Hey book friends! I hope your week is off to a great start and that you had a relaxing weekend with lots of reading time. Today I’m sharing some of my favorite romance books that feature the friends to lovers trope. My favorite thing about this trope is that fear that getting together romantically could ruin a wonderful friendship and all of the ensuing pining as the characters work through that fear. I also love the shared history and the respect that these characters typically have for one another since they are such good friends.

The books featured below are a mix of new releases and some that are a few years old but are still favorites. They are also mostly spicy romances since that’s what I tend to gravitate toward.

🍁 Review - THE MATCHMAKER’S COTTAGE 🍁

Author - Kat Sloane

Pub Date - 8/11//2026

The Matchmaker’s Cottage is a great choice for anyone who is ready for cozy fall vibes and a setting filled with New England small town charm!

Julia owns a secluded lakeside B&B in upstate New York. She loves what she does but it’s a struggle to make ends meet. Ethan is Julia’s estranged childhood best friend and he now works in PR, playing matchmaker for celebrities in need of good press. Julia and Ethan haven’t seen each other in years, but after a disastrous matchmaking incident that has his career in danger, Ethan desperately needs a remote Hallmark-style picturesque setting for his next project so he reaches out to Julia, who reluctantly agrees to let him use the B&B.

Something I always love about a second chance romance is the history between the two main characters, those nostalgic glimpses into their shared history, what was so good between them, and then ultimately what tears them apart. I thought the author did a wonderful job bringing this aspect of Julia and Ethan’s past to light. Feelings ran deep between them, probably deeper than they ever realize, and now that they are reluctantly reunited, old wounds are being reopened while those deep feelings start to bubble to the surface.

I really enjoyed the author’s writing, especially the vibrant descriptions of the B&B and the small town setting. I felt like I had been transported there. I also really enjoyed that the story is presented in a dual POV so that we get to know what both Julia and Ethan are feeling at any given moment.

These are flawed, messy characters with equally messy emotions and being in their heads really made what they were feeling that much more relatable. I also thought that made the tension between them feel realistic, as well as the moments they start to realize their true feelings for one another.

🗝️ REVIEW - ALCHEMY OF SOULS 🗝️

Author - Adriana Mather

Pub Date - 8/4/2026

If you’re in the mood for a read that features an atmospheric, dark academia setting, you’re going to want to check out Adriana Mather’s latest YA romantasy, Alchemy of Souls!

Eloise and Graydon come from the opposite social classes and have nothing in common aside from magical abilities. He’s elite, while she’s from the working class. When they are taking their entrance exams to the magical academy they both hope to attend, something goes wrong and they somehow end up bound together and to an elusive ancient magical key. Since it seems Eloise and Graydon together are the only ones who can make the key appear, they are forced by the school’s administration to team up to try to locate the key again.

This was such an entertaining story! I always enjoy a dark academia setting and thought the author did a wonderful job with both the world building and the magic system. I thought the magic system was unique but also very easy to understand, and the worldbuilding was so vivid I felt like I was at the school following the key’s clues along with Eloise and Graydon.

I love the forced proximity trope and thought it was used well here, along with the fake dating trope, as Eloise and Graydon pretend to be dating as a cover for why they’re spending so much time together. It was also great fun watching the two of them grow closer as they work together. There’s a lot of tension between them that ultimately gives way to attraction. My only gripe was that the story takes place over just a few weeks and I would have loved more time with these characters to get to know them better. I loved them both but just wanted a little more.

Stacy Carolan and Caitlan Kelly narrate the audiobook and both turn in wonderful performances. Sometimes I struggle to listen to fantasy books on audio, but I thought this one was so easy to follow and I binged it in a couple of sittings.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
