Can’t Wait Wednesday – A VERY LARGE EXPANSE OF SEA by Tahereh Mafi
“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, which encourages fellow bloggers to spotlight upcoming releases that we’re excited about. It is a meme that I have loved participating in for over a year now, but as Jill is no longer actively posting, from now on I’ll just be linking to Can’t Wait Wednesday, hosted by Tressa, which is a spinoff of the original WoW meme.

My selection for this week is A VERY LARGE EXPANSE OF SEA by Tahereh Mafi. The synopsis for this book grabbed my attention as soon as I read it. It sounds like it’s going to be a powerful story that really resonates with many readers. I also read somewhere that it’s partly based on the author’s own experiences, which I think makes it resonate even more.
A VERY LARGE EXPANSE OF SEA by Tahereh Mafi
Publication Date: October 16, 2018
From Goodreads:
It’s 2002, a year after 9/11. It’s an extremely turbulent time politically, but especially so for someone like Shirin, a sixteen-year-old Muslim girl who’s tired of being stereotyped.
Shirin is never surprised by how horrible people can be. She’s tired of the rude stares, the degrading comments—even the physical violence—she endures as a result of her race, her religion, and the hijab she wears every day. So she’s built up protective walls and refuses to let anyone close enough to hurt her. Instead, she drowns her frustrations in music and spends her afternoons break-dancing with her brother.
But then she meets Ocean James. He’s the first person in forever who really seems to want to get to know Shirin. It terrifies her—they seem to come from two irreconcilable worlds—and Shirin has had her guard up for so long that she’s not sure she’ll ever be able to let it down.

I’d love to hear what upcoming book releases you’re waiting on this Wednesday? Leave me your link in the comments below and I’ll stop by and check out your CWW selection for this week. 🙂
This sounds wonderful, Suzanne — and timely. I feel like it’s a story that’s going to break my heart (but hopefully put it back together again by the end) I do wonder what world Ocean comes from… the blurb makes that sound like there’s more to him somehow
Yeah, Ocean really intrigues me as well.
After just finishing Shatter Me by Tahereh – I would like to read more by her and not just the Shatter Me series. I have to add this one to my list. Great pick.
Mary my CWW!
Thanks!
This sounds like quite a departure for Mafi and I’m interested😁
I agree!
This is new to me, and now I would like to read this one too! I can’t imagine what Shirin is going through. This sounds like a must read book. Thank you for sharing!
You’re welcome!
I’ve never read Mafi before, but I think this one is something I’d probably enjoy more as it’s contemporary and seems like it deals with some tough topics, and I love those type of books!

Same here!
This sounds really good! I’m not a fan of Tahereh Mafi’s writing style but I might try to read this one! I hope you’ll enjoy it! Have a wonderful day!
Thanks, you too!
Mafi is such a popular author. I bet lots of people will be wanting this one.
I think so too!
This sounds like it’s going to be very emotional! I hope you enjoy it!
Thanks, I hope so too!
Sounds like a powerful story, and yeah timely as well.
I think so too!
I’ve been seeing this title pop up everywhere lately, it sounds incredible. Great pick!
Thanks!
I don’t even care what it’s about. I love Mafi’s books. I read 3 of the Shatter Me books (so far), and both Furthermore books, and I really enjoyed them all.
I’m really glad to hear that. This will be my first Mafi, but I’ve been wanting to read her books for ages.
This does sound powerful! Great pick!
Thanks!
We chose the same book this week!! I have only read the first two books of her Shatter Me series, but this one sounds like it’s going to be really great. 🙂

I think so too!
I also read that Tahereh used her own experiences post-9/11 as inspiration. Should make for a pretty powerful read.
I think so too!
I’M SO EXCITED FOR THIS AS WELL!!! It’s been so long since I’ve read from Tahereh, and a contemporary would be a welcome change. Plus I think this cover is gorgeous!
I love the cover too!
