Can’t Wait Wednesday – BETTER HATE THAN NEVER by Chloe Liese

March 29, 2023/8 Comments/by Suzanne

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, which encourages fellow bloggers to spotlight upcoming releases that we’re excited about.  It is a meme that I have  loved participating in since I first started blogging, but as Jill is no longer actively posting, from now on I’ll be linking to Can’t Wait Wednesday, hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings, which is a spinoff of the original WoW meme.

* * * * *

My selection for this week is BETTER HATE THAN NEVER by Chloe Liese.  This is the second book in the Wilmot Sisters series.  I really enjoyed the first book, Two Wrongs Make a Right, and I love that this one is a reimaging of The Taming of the Shrew, one of my favorite Shakespearean comedies.

BETTER HATE THAN NEVER by Chloe Liese

Publication Date: October 10, 2023

by Berkley Books

From Goodreads:

Childhood enemies discover the fine line between love and loathing in this heartfelt reimagining of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew.

Katerina Wilmot and Christopher Petruchio shared backyards as kids, but as adults they won’t even share the same hemisphere. That is, until Kate makes a rare visit home, and their fiery animosity rekindles into a raging inferno.

Despite their friends’ and families’ pleas for peace, Christopher is unconvinced Kate would willingly douse the flames of their enmity. But when a drunken Kate confesses she’s only been hostile because she thought he hated her, Christopher vows to make peace with Kate once and for all. Tempting as it is to be swept away by her nemesis-turned-gentleman, Kate isn’t sure she can trust his charming good-guy act.

When Christopher’s persistence and Kate’s curiosity lead to an impassioned kiss, they realize “peace” is the last thing that will ever be possible between them. As desire gives way to deeper feelings, Kate and Christopher must decide if it’s truly better to hate than to never risk their hearts—or if they already gave them away long ago.

I’d love to hear what upcoming book releases you’re waiting on this Wednesday? Leave me your link in the comments below and I’ll stop by and check out your CWW selection for this week. 🙂

❓QOTD: Do you have any series that you're hoping to start or get caught up on this spring?

AOTD: I have so many, but Dreamland Billionaires by Lauren Asher and the Twisted series by Ana Huang are two that I'm very excited to finally start soon.

Twisted Love is a brother’s best friend/opposites attract romance with a hint of suspense. It's book one in the Twisted series but can be read as a standalone.

The Fine Print is the first book in a series of interconnected standalones following three billionaire brothers.

📚 WHAT THIS WEEK 📚 Feels like I blinked and 📚 WHAT THIS WEEK 📚

Feels like I blinked and missed the weekend, but here we are at the start of a brand new week.

I hope you all had a good weekend. Here’s what I’m up to this week.

What I’m Reading - I have some ARCs I need to get to but first I’m re-reading Daisy Jones and the Six. I just finished watching the final episodes on Amazon Prime this weekend. I’m so sad it’s over but it’s definitely one of my favorite book to screen adaptations ever.

What I’m Watching - Since I finished Daisy Jones and got caught up on Ted Lasso this weekend, it’s time to get back to The Mandalorian.

What I’m Listening to - Daisy Jones and the Six soundtrack on Spotify and an audiobook of The Hawthorne Legacy.

❓QOTD: What are you reading, watching, and listening to this week?

Also, I have to give a shout out to @emilycromwelldesigns. I ordered her Bookworm Essentials pouch because it’s super cute but it’s also the perfect size to hold all of my bookmarks and annotating supplies! 💕

📚 Review - LUNAR LOVE by Lauren Kung Jessen 📚

This was such a fun enemies/rivals to lovers story!

It follows Olivia, a young woman who is taking over Lunar Love, her grandmother's traditional Chinese matchmaking business. Olivia is nervous about taking on such a huge responsibility but also honored that her grandmother chose her. The business hasn't been doing well of late though so the pressure is on Olivia to turn things around and bring in new customers.

There's just one problem and his name is Bennett. Bennett is not only L.A.'s most eligible bachelor, he also happens to be the man behind a trendy new matchmaking app called ZodiacLove that is threatening to put LunarLove out of business.

Sparks fly as Olivia and Bennett go head to head. Olivia thinks Bennett's app makes a mockery of traditional Chinese matchmaking, while Bennett thinks Olivia is being too close-minded and that it's perfectly okay to modernize traditions to keep up with the times. When they face off at an event designed to secure funding for their businesses, Olivia and Bennett make a wager. Olivia will use her traditional methods to make a love match for Bennett, and he will do the same for her using his app and algorithm. Whoever falls in love with their match loses.

I loved following both Olivia and Bennett on this journey. The chemistry between them and the banter was fantastic, and I also enjoyed watching them grow closer as they realize they have more in common than they originally thought, particularly that they both struggle with identity and the idea that they aren't Chinese enough to do what they are doing.

Lunar Love is a fun and heartfelt romance that is perfect for enemies to lovers fans and for those who enjoy a story steeped in cultural traditions.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

📚 Review: THE LOVE WAGER 📚 Lynn Painter is 📚 Review: THE LOVE WAGER 📚

Lynn Painter is one of my go-to authors when I’m craving a hilarious and heartwarming read and her latest rom-com, The Love Wager, is all of that and more.

When the story opens, Hallie is working at a wedding, tending bar. When Jack, the sexy best man, orders a drink, Hallie hits it off with him, a little too well apparently, because they end up in a hotel room together. Hallie ends up belly-crawling out of the hotel room in a desperate attempt to avoid an awkward post- one night stand encounter, and she decides at that moment that it’s time to make some major life changes.

She creates a profile on a dating app, hoping to find true love, and who does she see almost immediately as she’s scrolling for matches? Yep, you guessed it, Jack!

Hallie messages him through the app, mainly just to mess with him, and the two of them end up actually becoming friends and make a friendly wager on which of them will find love first.

This story was just so much fun! Friends to lovers is a trope I enjoy anyway, but Painter really leveled it up when she added the one-night stand into the equation to make it more along the lines of a lovers to friends to lovers romance.

Hallie & Jack were also both so likeable and had tremendous chemistry (no matter how many times they each tried to remind themselves that they were only platonic friends). I loved how they would set up their respective dates at the same place so that if things didn’t go well, they could give each other an out and escape to go get tacos together. The taco “not dates” were adorable and it was so much fun to watch these two clearly grow more and more attracted to each other, and more concerned for each other’s happiness and well-being, the more they hung out together.

At one point, Hallie takes Jack to an event as her fake date and I was giddy watching them interact because they had more chemistry than any of the real couples who were there. I was rooting so hard for them to just get on with it already, haha!

Highly recommend to anyone looking for a romantic read that is filled with heart & humor. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

❓QOTD: Do you think it’s possible to find love through an app?

Hey everyone! I hope your week is off to a great start. Mine has been busy and I’ve been fighting a sinus infection for almost a week now. I’m finally feeling a little better today though so I’m about to start my re-read of Ninth House so that I can finally move on to Hell Bent! 📚 Series Spotlight - Lilac Girls by Martha Hall 📚 Series Spotlight - Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly 📚

Today I’m featuring one of my favorite historical fiction series, Lilac Girls.

🌸The first book, Lilac Girls, was Inspired by the life of a real WWII heroine. It introduces readers to Caroline Ferriday, an American philanthropist who helped young girls released from Ravensbruck concentration camp.

🌹The second book, Lost Roses, is set a generation earlier and also inspired by true events. It features Caroline's mother, Eliza, and follows three equally indomitable women from St. Petersburg to Paris under the shadow of World War I.

🌻Sunflower Sisters, the final book, goes back yet another generation and tells the story of Caroline Ferriday's ancestor Georgeanna Woolsey, a Union nurse who joins the war effort during the Civil War, and how her calling leads her to cross paths with Jemma, a young enslaved girl who is sold off and conscripted into the army, and Ann-May Wilson, a southern plantation mistress whose husband enlists.

All three novels are beautifully written, well researched, and I highly recommend all three novels to anyone who would like to learn more about these inspirational women, whose efforts during wartimes have often gone unsung in the past.

✈️ Love and Other Flight Delays by Denise Williams ✈️

I'm a huge fan of Denise Williams' novels and this collection of fun, smart, and sexy novellas have been the perfect thing to help tide me over until her next full-length novel comes out. It has all of my favorite tropes, like grumpy sunshine, rivals to lovers, and fake dating, and while I never would have imagined the airport as a place to find true love, Williams has made a believer out of me!

❓QOTD: Where’s the most unusual place someone has ever flirted with you? Or, alternate question, what are you currently reading?

Synopsis (from Goodreads):

Love takes flight in a collection of sexy, fun novellas all set at the airport from the acclaimed author of The Fastest Way to Fall.

The Love Connection
An airport pet groomer meets her frequent-flier crush and finds herself in a fake-dating situation with a professional risk assessor who moonlights as a romance author.

The Missed Connection
Two strangers share a romantic night only to discover months later that they're professional rivals about to embark on an extended business trip together in this grumpy-meets-sunshine romance.

The Sweetest Connection
Two best friends have one week to return a lost love letter found in a candy store at the airport--and work up the courage to confess the deep feelings between them--before one of them leaves the country.

✌🏻 Two for Tuesday - Pretty Covers edition ✌🏻

I’m always drawn to books that feature flowers on the covers and these two books from Alix E. Harrow have some of the prettiest covers I’ve ever seen.

The books themselves are wonderful too, especially if you enjoy magical stories.

QOTD: What kinds of book covers are you drawn to?

AOTD: Aside from flowers, I also really like bright colors, animals, iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, and illustrated covers. One thing I don’t like though is faces on covers. No idea why. 😅

📚 Book Review 📚 Doller’s new novel Off th 📚 Book Review 📚

Doller’s new novel Off the Map follows Carla Black, who has traveled to Ireland to attend her best friend’s wedding. Readers of the Beck Sisters series will recognize Carla’s bff and her fiancé as Anna and Keane from Float Plan.

Once Carla arrives in Dublin, the plan is for her to meet up with Keane’s brother Eamon, who will drive her to the wedding destination. That plan goes off the rails, however, when Carla and Eamon hit it off and their road trip across the country takes an unexpected and possibly life changing turn.

Carla is a bit of a free spirit and has been traveling around the world on her own for nearly a decade. She returns to Florida to work long enough to save up more money for traveling and then heads out again.

What I love about Doller’s characters is that they’re complicated and messy. It turns out that Carla lives like she does, in part, because her dad, who has dementia, has asked her to. He wants her out there living life to the fullest, not watching him slowly forget who she is. So she’s out there on her own, trying to keep her promise to him. I loved Carla’s free spirit, but it broke my heart to learn the real reason behind her extensive traveling.

Eamon is also complicated. He is struggling because he feels like his life has just stalled out. He is also tired of being the responsible one and really just wants to cut loose and go on an adventure.

Carla turns out to be just the right person at the right time as she encourages him to show her around Ireland rather than driving straight to meet his family.

I really adored this journey for both characters. There were of course lots of fun, shenanigans, & steamy moments to be had along the way, but the best part was the conversation. Carla and Eamon opened up to each other about their hopes, dreams, fears, & so much more. I enjoyed watching them grow close & I loved that they were each able to get some things off their chests that it seemed like they had been holding in for a long time.

Off the Map is perfect for anyone who enjoys humorous & heartfelt romantic adventure stories. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

QOTD: If you could road trip across any country, which would you choose?

Sarah Hawley’s A Witch’s Guide to Fake Dating a Demon follows Mariel Spark, a young witch who is prophesied to be the most powerful witch seen for centuries. Mariel, however, is a mess when it comes to her magic. If she casts a spell, you’re going to want to duck because it’s likely to be a disaster. Mariel’s mother thrives on pointing out what a failure she is, which only adds to Mariel’s frustration and makes her spell casting even worse.

It is during one of these spell mishaps that Mariel accidentally does something that will forever change her life – she summons a soul-bargaining demon, Ozroth the Ruthless.

Ozroth is a legend in the demon world when it comes to bargaining for mortal souls. Only here’s the thing, Ozroth the Ruthless isn’t exactly ruthless anymore. Ozroth had a mishap during a bargaining session with a warlock and now he has a mortal soul in his body. That soul has not only made it more difficult for him to trick mortals into giving him their souls, but it also makes him catch feelings easier. When Ozroth lands in Mariel’s kitchen, he finds himself in a predicament. He can’t leave her side until he secures her soul, but since Mariel conjured him by accident, she has no interest in giving up her soul, which leaves them at a hilarious impasse.

The chemistry between Mariel and Ozroth was fantastic, & their banter as Ozroth tried & failed repeatedly to get Mariel’s soul had me just cackling away, as did their attempts to hide Ozroth’s demon identity, both with comical costumes and by pretending to be dating.

As funny as they were, what actually captured my heart was that they were each the main one who saw the other’s true worth. The connection that grew between them as they built each other up had me so invested in them finding a way to get around this deal and be together.

A Witch’s Guide to Fake Dating a Demon is perfect for those who enjoy paranormal romances and who love their rom-coms heartwarming, a little steamy, and laugh out loud hilarious! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

QOTD: Tell me something good that has happened to you this week.
📚 Book Review 📚 Set in a small town in nort 📚 Book Review 📚

Set in a small town in northern Georgia, Shameless Love is an opposites-attract romance and the second book in K.G. Fletcher's The Bennetts of Langston Falls series. It can be read as a standalone though, which is what I did.

Walt Bennett is a handsome, broody country boy who would do anything for his family, including taking his sister Becky to Atlanta to do a screen test to see if she can turn her youtube cooking show into something bigger. When Walt meets Elyse, the sexy and sophisticated TV producer who discovered Becky, sparks fly. They both feel a connection, but neither is looking for a relationship. Walt and Elyse are more than okay with a steamy one-night stand though.

When Elyse travels to Langston Falls to meet Becky again, Mother Nature lends a helping hand by trapping Elyse and Walt at Walt's house during a snowstorm. Nothing like forced proximity to move a relationship along! I liked both Walt and Elyse, found their chemistry to be believable, and enjoyed watching their relationship progress.

I also really loved the Bennett family and how close they all were. I also loved the Bennett farm setting, which was so charming with its Christmas tree farm and vineyard.

In addition to the blossoming spicy romance, there are also some hints of drama that apparently carry over from the first book. The author gives enough information that I didn't feel lost about what had happened, but me being super nosy, I wanted all the tea and so felt like I was missing a little something by not having read the first book.

All in all, it's still a solid read. My overall thoughts on Shameless Love: Hallmark movie vibes but with lots of spice and a side of drama!

⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
