Top Ten Tuesday – Books By My Favorite Authors That I Still Need to Read

March 21, 2023/18 Comments/by Suzanne

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is TTT Rewind (Pick a previous topic that you missed or would like to re-do/update.).  I decided to take this opportunity to share Books By My Favorite Authors That I Still Need to Read. Even though I’ve been making a major effort to read more of the books I own and specifically to tackle the backlists of my favorite authors, somehow I still have books by my favorites that I haven’t gotten to yet.  The ten I’m sharing today are ones I really hope to get to this year.

Books By My Favorite Authors That I Still Need to Read

1. NIGHT ROAD by Kristin Hannah  –  “Vivid, universal, and emotionally complex, Night Road raises profound questions about motherhood, identity, love, and forgiveness. It is a luminous, heartbreaking novel that captures both the exquisite pain of loss and the stunning power of hope. This is Kristin Hannah at her very best, telling an unforgettable story about the longing for family, the resilience of the human heart, and the courage it takes to forgive the people we love.”

2. GET LUCKY by Katherine Center  – “How do you change your luck? Katherine Center’s marvelously entertaining and poignant novel is about choosing to look for happiness—and maybe getting lucky enough to find it.”

3. THE DARK VAULT by V.E. Schwab – “Imagine a place where the dead rest on shelves like books.  Each body has a story to tell, a life seen in pictures only Librarians can read. The dead are called Histories, and the vast realm in which they rest is the Archive. Mackenzie Bishop’s grandfather first brought her here four years ago, when she was twelve years old, frightened but determined to prove herself. Now her grandfather is dead, and Mac has grown into what he once was: a ruthless Keeper, tasked with stopping often violent Histories from waking up and getting out. Because of her job, she lies to the people she loves, and she knows fear for what it is: a useful tool for staying alive.  Follow Mackenzie as she explores the boundary between living and dying, sleeping and waking, through these two timeless novels, now bound together in this thrilling collection. With stunning prose and a captivating mixture of action, romance, and horror, The Dark Vault delves into a richly imagined world where no choice is easy and love and loss feel like two sides of the same coin..”

4. CONFESS by Colleen Hoover  – “Auburn Reed is determined to rebuild her shattered life and she has no room for mistakes. But when she walks into a Dallas art studio in search of a job, she doesn’t expect to become deeply attracted to the studio’s enigmatic artist, Owen Gentry. For once, Auburn takes a chance and puts her heart in control, only to discover that Owen is hiding a huge secret. The magnitude of his past threatens to destroy everything Auburn loves most, and the only way to get her life back on track is to cut Owen out of it—but can she do it?.”

5. WAITING FOR TOM HANKS by Kerry Winfrey – “Can a romcom-obsessed romantic finally experience the meet-cute she always dreamed of or will reality never compare to fiction, in this charming debut adult novel from Kerry Winfrey. Annie Cassidy dreams of being the next Nora Ephron. She spends her days writing screenplays, rewatching Sleepless in Seattle, and waiting for her movie-perfect meet-cute. If she could just find her own Tom Hanks—a man who’s sweet, sensitive, and possibly owns a houseboat—her problems would disappear and her life would be perfect. But Tom Hanks is nowhere in sight. When a movie starts filming in her neighborhood and Annie gets a job on set, it seems like a sign. Then Annie meets the lead actor, Drew Danforth, a cocky prankster who couldn’t be less like Tom Hanks if he tried. Their meet-cute is more of a meet-fail, but soon Annie finds herself sharing some classic rom-com moments with Drew. Her Tom Hanks can’t be an actor who’s leaving town in a matter of days…can he?”

6. WOLFSONG by T.J. Klune – “Ox was twelve when his daddy taught him a very valuable lesson. He said that Ox wasn’t worth anything and people would never understand him. Then he left.  Ox was sixteen when he met the boy on the road. The little boy who talked and talked and talked. Ox found out later the little boy hadn’t spoken in almost two years before that day, and that the little boy belonged to a family who had moved into the house at the end of the lane. Ox was seventeen when he found out the little boy’s secret and it painted the world around him in colors of red and orange and violet, of Alpha and Beta and Omega. Ox was twenty-three when murder came to town and tore a hole in his head and heart. The boy chased after the monster with revenge in his bloodred eyes, leaving Ox behind to pick up the pieces. It’s been three years since that fateful day—and the boy is back. Except now he’s a man, and Ox can no longer ignore the song that howls between them.”

7. DEAR CAROLINA by Kristy Woodson Harvey  –  “One baby girl. Two strong Southern women. And the most difficult decision they’ll ever make. Frances “Khaki” Mason has it all: a thriving interior design career, a loving husband and son, homes in North Carolina and Manhattan—everything except the second child she has always wanted. Jodi, her husband’s nineteen-year-old cousin, is fresh out of rehab, pregnant, and alone. Although the two women couldn’t seem more different, they forge a lifelong connection as Khaki reaches out to Jodi, encouraging her to have her baby. But as Jodi struggles to be the mother she knows her daughter deserves, she will ask Khaki the ultimate favor…Written to baby Carolina, by both her birth mother and her adoptive one, this is a story that proves that life circumstances shape us but don’t define us—and that families aren’t born, they’re made….“

8. DAUGHTERS OF ROME by Kate Quinn – “A.D. 69. Nero is dead. The Roman Empire is up for the taking. With bloodshed spilling out of the palace and into the streets of Rome, chaos has become the status quo. The Year of Four Emperors will change everything—especially the lives of two sisters with a very personal stake in the outcome….Elegant and ambitious, Cornelia embodies the essence of the perfect Roman wife. She lives to one day see her loyal husband as Emperor. Her sister, Marcella, is more withdrawn, content to witness history rather than make it. Even so, Marcella has her share of distinguished suitors, from a cutthroat contender for the throne to a politician’s son who swears that someday he will be Emperor.  But when a bloody coup turns their world upside down, Cornelia and Marcella—along with their cousins, one a collector of husbands and lovers, the other a horse-mad beauty with no interest in romance—must maneuver carefully just to stay alive. As Cornelia tries to pick up the pieces of her shattered dreams, Marcella discovers a hidden talent for influencing the most powerful men in Rome. In the end, though, there can only be one Emperor … and one Empress.”

9. I FOUND YOU by Lisa Jewell  –  “‘How long have you been sitting out here?’ ‘I got here yesterday.’ ‘Where did you come from?’ ‘I have no idea.’  In East Yorkshire, single mum Alice Lake finds a man on the beach outside her house. He has no name, no jacket, no idea what he is doing there. Against her better judgement she invites him in to her home.  In Surrey, twenty-one-year-old Lily Monrose has only been married for three weeks. When her new husband fails to come home from work one night she is left stranded in a new country where she knows no one. Then the police tell her that her husband never existed. Two women, twenty years of secrets and a man who can’t remember lie at the heart of Lisa Jewell’s brilliant new novel.”

10. OTHER PEOPLE’S HOUSES by Abbi Waxman  –  “A hilarious and poignant new novel about four families, their neighborhood carpool, and the affair that changes everything. At any given moment in other people’s houses, you can find…repressed hopes and dreams…moments of unexpected joy…someone making love on the floor to a man who is most definitely not her husband.”

Hi, I'm Suzanne. Proofreader by day, book blogger by night, devourer of books 24/7. My reading tastes: Basically you name it, I probably like it. I read a lot of contemporary and historical, both adult and YA, and I've also been enjoying more and more fantasy lately. Hobbies include: buying and hoarding of books, rambling about books to anyone who will listen, and trying to recommend books to my family and friends whether they are readers or not - because seriously, how can you not love to read books?

📚 Series Spotlight - Lilac Girls by Martha Hall 📚 Series Spotlight - Lilac Girls by Martha Hall Kelly 📚

Today I’m featuring one of my favorite historical fiction series, Lilac Girls.

🌸The first book, Lilac Girls, was Inspired by the life of a real WWII heroine. It introduces readers to Caroline Ferriday, an American philanthropist who helped young girls released from Ravensbruck concentration camp.

🌹The second book, Lost Roses, is set a generation earlier and also inspired by true events. It features Caroline's mother, Eliza, and follows three equally indomitable women from St. Petersburg to Paris under the shadow of World War I.

🌻Sunflower Sisters, the final book, goes back yet another generation and tells the story of Caroline Ferriday's ancestor Georgeanna Woolsey, a Union nurse who joins the war effort during the Civil War, and how her calling leads her to cross paths with Jemma, a young enslaved girl who is sold off and conscripted into the army, and Ann-May Wilson, a southern plantation mistress whose husband enlists.

All three novels are beautifully written, well researched, and I highly recommend all three novels to anyone who would like to learn more about these inspirational women, whose efforts during wartimes have often gone unsung in the past.

❓QOTD: Who are some women, past or present, who inspire you?

🔪 THRILLER THURSDAY 🔪 Even though I mostly 🔪 THRILLER THURSDAY 🔪

Even though I mostly read romance and fantasy, I still love to occasionally dive into a twisty thriller that keeps me on the edge of my seat. Here are some of my favorites. I highly recommend these to anyone who loves a suspenseful read that will keep them guessing until the very end.

🔪And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
🔪In a Dark, Daek Wood by Ruth Ware
🔪Verity by Colleen Hoover
🔪In My Dreams I Hold a Knife by Ashley Winstead
🔪Rock Paper Scissors by Alice Feeney
🔪A Flicker in the Dark by Stacy Willingham
🔪UNSUB by Meg Gardiner

❓QOTD: Do you read thrillers? If so, recommend some of your favorites to me.

And why is that no matter how perfectly synced a reel is when you create it, it gets all out of whack when you post it? Just me? I’ve tried to post this one twice now so it just is what it is at this point. 😂😅

✈️ Love and Other Flight Delays by Denise Williams ✈️

I'm a huge fan of Denise Williams' novels and this collection of fun, smart, and sexy novellas have been the perfect thing to help tide me over until her next full-length novel comes out. It has all of my favorite tropes, like grumpy sunshine, rivals to lovers, and fake dating, and while I never would have imagined the airport as a place to find true love, Williams has made a believer out of me!

❓QOTD: Where’s the most unusual place someone has ever flirted with you? Or, alternate question, what are you currently reading?

Synopsis (from Goodreads):

Love takes flight in a collection of sexy, fun novellas all set at the airport from the acclaimed author of The Fastest Way to Fall.

The Love Connection
An airport pet groomer meets her frequent-flier crush and finds herself in a fake-dating situation with a professional risk assessor who moonlights as a romance author.

The Missed Connection
Two strangers share a romantic night only to discover months later that they're professional rivals about to embark on an extended business trip together in this grumpy-meets-sunshine romance.

The Sweetest Connection
Two best friends have one week to return a lost love letter found in a candy store at the airport--and work up the courage to confess the deep feelings between them--before one of them leaves the country.

✌🏻 Two for Tuesday - Pretty Covers edition ✌🏻

I’m always drawn to books that feature flowers on the covers and these two books from Alix E. Harrow have some of the prettiest covers I’ve ever seen.

The books themselves are wonderful too, especially if you enjoy magical stories.

QOTD: What kinds of book covers are you drawn to?

AOTD: Aside from flowers, I also really like bright colors, animals, iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, and illustrated covers. One thing I don’t like though is faces on covers. No idea why. 😅

📚 Book Review 📚 Doller’s new novel Off th 📚 Book Review 📚

Doller’s new novel Off the Map follows Carla Black, who has traveled to Ireland to attend her best friend’s wedding. Readers of the Beck Sisters series will recognize Carla’s bff and her fiancé as Anna and Keane from Float Plan.

Once Carla arrives in Dublin, the plan is for her to meet up with Keane’s brother Eamon, who will drive her to the wedding destination. That plan goes off the rails, however, when Carla and Eamon hit it off and their road trip across the country takes an unexpected and possibly life changing turn.

Carla is a bit of a free spirit and has been traveling around the world on her own for nearly a decade. She returns to Florida to work long enough to save up more money for traveling and then heads out again.

What I love about Doller’s characters is that they’re complicated and messy. It turns out that Carla lives like she does, in part, because her dad, who has dementia, has asked her to. He wants her out there living life to the fullest, not watching him slowly forget who she is. So she’s out there on her own, trying to keep her promise to him. I loved Carla’s free spirit, but it broke my heart to learn the real reason behind her extensive traveling.

Eamon is also complicated. He is struggling because he feels like his life has just stalled out. He is also tired of being the responsible one and really just wants to cut loose and go on an adventure.

Carla turns out to be just the right person at the right time as she encourages him to show her around Ireland rather than driving straight to meet his family.

I really adored this journey for both characters. There were of course lots of fun, shenanigans, & steamy moments to be had along the way, but the best part was the conversation. Carla and Eamon opened up to each other about their hopes, dreams, fears, & so much more. I enjoyed watching them grow close & I loved that they were each able to get some things off their chests that it seemed like they had been holding in for a long time.

Off the Map is perfect for anyone who enjoys humorous & heartfelt romantic adventure stories. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

QOTD: If you could road trip across any country, which would you choose?

Sarah Hawley’s A Witch’s Guide to Fake Dating a Demon follows Mariel Spark, a young witch who is prophesied to be the most powerful witch seen for centuries. Mariel, however, is a mess when it comes to her magic. If she casts a spell, you’re going to want to duck because it’s likely to be a disaster. Mariel’s mother thrives on pointing out what a failure she is, which only adds to Mariel’s frustration and makes her spell casting even worse.

It is during one of these spell mishaps that Mariel accidentally does something that will forever change her life – she summons a soul-bargaining demon, Ozroth the Ruthless.

Ozroth is a legend in the demon world when it comes to bargaining for mortal souls. Only here’s the thing, Ozroth the Ruthless isn’t exactly ruthless anymore. Ozroth had a mishap during a bargaining session with a warlock and now he has a mortal soul in his body. That soul has not only made it more difficult for him to trick mortals into giving him their souls, but it also makes him catch feelings easier. When Ozroth lands in Mariel’s kitchen, he finds himself in a predicament. He can’t leave her side until he secures her soul, but since Mariel conjured him by accident, she has no interest in giving up her soul, which leaves them at a hilarious impasse.

The chemistry between Mariel and Ozroth was fantastic, & their banter as Ozroth tried & failed repeatedly to get Mariel’s soul had me just cackling away, as did their attempts to hide Ozroth’s demon identity, both with comical costumes and by pretending to be dating.

As funny as they were, what actually captured my heart was that they were each the main one who saw the other’s true worth. The connection that grew between them as they built each other up had me so invested in them finding a way to get around this deal and be together.

A Witch’s Guide to Fake Dating a Demon is perfect for those who enjoy paranormal romances and who love their rom-coms heartwarming, a little steamy, and laugh out loud hilarious! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

QOTD: Tell me something good that has happened to you this week.
📚 Book Review 📚 Set in a small town in nort 📚 Book Review 📚

Set in a small town in northern Georgia, Shameless Love is an opposites-attract romance and the second book in K.G. Fletcher's The Bennetts of Langston Falls series. It can be read as a standalone though, which is what I did.

Walt Bennett is a handsome, broody country boy who would do anything for his family, including taking his sister Becky to Atlanta to do a screen test to see if she can turn her youtube cooking show into something bigger. When Walt meets Elyse, the sexy and sophisticated TV producer who discovered Becky, sparks fly. They both feel a connection, but neither is looking for a relationship. Walt and Elyse are more than okay with a steamy one-night stand though.

When Elyse travels to Langston Falls to meet Becky again, Mother Nature lends a helping hand by trapping Elyse and Walt at Walt's house during a snowstorm. Nothing like forced proximity to move a relationship along! I liked both Walt and Elyse, found their chemistry to be believable, and enjoyed watching their relationship progress.

I also really loved the Bennett family and how close they all were. I also loved the Bennett farm setting, which was so charming with its Christmas tree farm and vineyard.

In addition to the blossoming spicy romance, there are also some hints of drama that apparently carry over from the first book. The author gives enough information that I didn't feel lost about what had happened, but me being super nosy, I wanted all the tea and so felt like I was missing a little something by not having read the first book.

All in all, it's still a solid read. My overall thoughts on Shameless Love: Hallmark movie vibes but with lots of spice and a side of drama!

QOTD: What are you reading this weekend?

I just started Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver. I love Kingsolver’s books and was excited to see this one was an Oprah Book Club pick last year. I’m about 10 chapters in and I’m completely engrossed in Demon’s story. I’m predicting this will be a five star read for me, so we’ll see if that prediction holds up at the end.

From Goodreads: “Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, this is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. In a plot that never pauses for breath, relayed in his own unsparing voice, he braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses. Through all of it, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities... Demon Copperhead speaks for a new generation of lost boys, and all those born into beautiful, cursed places they can’t imagine leaving behind.”

Cold Blooded Liar is the first book in Karen Rose’s new San Diego Case Files series. It was my first time reading something from Karen Rose but it definitely won’t be the last!

Psychologist Sam Reeves treats court-ordered clients. When one of his clients starts dropping hints that he may have been involved in a serial killer cold case where all the victims were teen girls, Sam is compelled to anonymously report this to the San Diego PD tip line. Sam’s attempts to preserve doctor-patient confidentiality backfire, however, when Sam himself ends up arrested and considered a suspect in the case.

Sam’s arresting officer is Kit McKittrick, a homicide detective who is a bright star at the SDPD. When Kit was a teenager, her sister and best friend Wren was murdered and the murder was never solved. This is what led Kit to become a homicide detective and why she is so passionate about solving cases that involve teen girls. Kit and her partner/mentor Baz eventually let Sam go, with the understanding that he is still a suspect, and they set out to catch the killer. Sam, knowing that his career, reputation, and perhaps even his own life, are all on the line, decides to do a little amateur sleuthing on his own.

I really enjoyed following both Kit’s and Sam’s separate investigations and the tension it created between Kit, Sam and Baz because they kept butting heads almost every step of the way of the investigation. There also appears to be an unspoken attraction between Sam and Kit, which also makes things all the more interesting since Sam is still considered a suspect.

I don’t want to give anything away about the investigation itself except to say that it was intense & suspenseful & kept me guessing until the final pages. I was also fully invested in the story because Rose did such a wonderful job fleshing out her characters. I loved Kit and her adoptive family, the McKittricks, who appear frequently throughout the book.

💙 Monday Blues 💙 Hey everyone, can you beli 💙 Monday Blues 💙

Hey everyone, can you believe February is already almost over? It feels like the month just started.

I’ve also got a bad case of the Monday blues so I’m sharing some blue books from my TBR today.

QOTD: Have you read any of these? If not, what book do you think will be your first read in March?

AOTD: I’m either going to start with House of Sky and Breath or an arc of Off the Map.

Happy Sunday everyone! Today I have unexpectedly found myself at home alone today while my husband and son are having a boys’ day out. I’m taking this quiet opportunity to finish up my re-read of House of Earth and Blood so that I can finally pick of the second book and get caught up.

QOTD: How’s your day going? Are you ready for Monday?

I know I’m not! 😅

📚 Review: THE NEIGHBOR FAVOR by Kristina Forest 📚 Review: THE NEIGHBOR FAVOR by Kristina Forest 📚

Lily Greene is a lifelong book lover who works in publishing. She’s not quite where she wants to be, which is to work as a children’s book editor, but she’s trying to get there. One day she decides to email her favorite fantasy author, N.R. Strickland (Strick), and they begin a months’ long correspondence that becomes the highlight of Lily’s days, to the extent that Lily wonders what life could be like if she were to meet him in person, a new friendship or more? That is until he abruptly ghosts her.

I loved Lily. She of course scored points with me immediately by virtue of being a book lover, but I also just really admired her determination to keep going after her dream job, and her perseverance when it came to taking control of her love life. Up until Strick ghosted her, Lily had been caving in to her sisters’ endless attempts to set her up on dates that went nowhere, but after getting burned by Strick, she decides it’s time to bring her sisters’ meddlesome matchmaking efforts to a halt. She turns to her new neighbor, the sexy and charming Nick Brown. He’s not looking to date anyone but is happy to help Lily find someone and get her sisters out of her hair. Unbeknownst to Lily, Nick is actually Strick.

I honestly wanted to hate Nick for ghosting Lily, but the more we get to know him, he has reasons for doing what he did even if he went about it the wrong way. I also enjoyed getting glimpses into Nick’s journey as an author coping with the pressure to complete a sequel to his best-selling fantasy novel.

The chemistry between Nick and Lily is wonderful & I enjoyed all their scenes, from the adorable bookish dates they go on to more poignant ones as Lily tries to help Nick deal with some issues he has with his dad.

I absolutely adored The Neighbor Favor. Is there an actual trope for bookish characters and bookish settings? Because, if not, there really should be!

Thanks to @berkleyromance and @netgalley for the arc. All opinions are my own.

QOTD: Do you have any pets?

AOTD: That’s my Winston photobombing this pic. 🐶💕
