Can’t Wait Wednesday – THE UNMAKING OF JUNE FARROW by Adrienne Young

June 7, 2023/4 Comments/by Suzanne

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, which encourages fellow bloggers to spotlight upcoming releases that we’re excited about.  It is a meme that I have  loved participating in since I first started blogging, but as Jill is no longer actively posting, from now on I’ll be linking to Can’t Wait Wednesday, hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings, which is a spinoff of the original WoW meme.

My selection for this week is THE UNMAKING OF JUNE FARROW by Adrienne Young.  I’ve had such good luck with this author’s books, both her YA and her adult ones, so I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy of this one.  It sounds like the perfect atmospheric read for spooky season!

THE UNMAKING OF JUNE FARROW by Adrienne Young

Publication Date: October 17, 2023

by Delacorte Press

From Goodreads:

A woman risks everything to end her family’s centuries-old curse, solve her mother’s disappearance, and find love in this mesmerizing novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Spells for Forgetting.

In the small mountain town of Jasper, North Carolina, June Farrow is waiting for fate to find her. The Farrow women are known for their thriving flower farm—and the mysterious curse that has plagued their family line. The whole town remembers the madness that led to Susanna Farrow’s disappearance, leaving June to be raised by her grandmother and haunted by rumors.

It’s been a year since June started seeing and hearing things that weren’t there. Faint wind chimes, a voice calling her name, and a mysterious door appearing out of nowhere—the signs of what June always knew was coming. But June is determined to end the curse once and for all, even if she must sacrifice finding love and having a family of her own.

After her grandmother’s death, June discovers a series of cryptic clues regarding her mother’sdecades-old disappearance, except they only lead to more questions. But could the door she once assumed was a hallucination be the answer she’s been searching for? The next time it appears, June realizes she can touch it and walk past the threshold. And when she does, she embarks on a journey that will not only change both the past and the future, but also uncover the lingering mysteries of her small town and entangle her heart in an epic star-crossed love.

With The Unmaking of June Farrow, Adrienne Young delivers a brilliant novel of romance, mystery, and a touch of the impossible—a story you will never forget.

💛 Pub Week Review - Ciao for Now by Kate Broml 💛 Pub Week Review - Ciao for Now by Kate Bromley 💛

Violet Luciano, a talented student of fashion design, has landed the opportunity of a lifetime. She gets to spend a month in Rome, Italy, interning at a popular fashion house and competing against two of her fellow classmates for the chance to secure a job at a major label back home in NYC. Violet knows this experience will change her life, but she has no idea how much!

What’s the opposite of a meet cute, a meet ugly? Almost as soon as Violet lands in Rome, she manages to trip and fall in a cafe, crash landing on a sexy man, crushing his laptop and dousing him in coffee. He is clearly not impressed and Violet can’t wait to get away from him, but guess what? Turns out he’s Matteo, the grumpy son of the professor who is hosting the students from New York so they’re staying in the same place. 😂

This was such a fun read! I love the enemies to lovers and forced proximity tropes so I had a blast following Violet and Matteo as they awkwardly navigated their way around each other, only to, of course since it’s a romance, eventually develop feelings other than hate for one another. I loved both characters and thought they had amazing chemistry.

I also loved hanging out with Violet and her endearing classmates as they interned in the fashion world. I don’t know much about fashion but it was fun exploring that world with them and watching them design pieces for their contest.

One of my favorite parts about the story though was that Violet is somewhat older than her classmates and has returned to school to find her passion. Her journey to Rome is also a journey of self discovery.

This is my third time reading Kate Bromley and I have yet to be disappointed. If you like rom coms, Italian settings, fashion design, and journeys of self discovery, you’ll definitely want to check out Ciao for Now!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

Thanks so much to @katebromleywrites, @delightfullybooked, and @graydonhousebooks for the review copy. All opinions are my own.

📚 Marrying Off Morgan McBride 📚 Thanks for t 📚 Marrying Off Morgan McBride 📚 Thanks for the free book @BerkleyRomance! #berkleypartner #berkleyIG

Set in Montana in the 1880s, Marrying Off Morgan McBride is the second book in Amy Barry’s The McBrides of Montana historical romance series, which focuses on the four McBride brothers finding love. These brothers aren’t actively looking for wives, but Junebug, their 14-year old sister, is tired of being the one to do all the chores so she secretly sends out ads for mail order brides, hoping her brothers will marry so she’ll finally have help.

This series is such a good time! Junebug & her shenanigans are the stars of the show & it is hilarious to watch her orchestrate everything that happens between her brothers and their potential wives. I loved how she writes these ads making her brothers sound like the absolute worst, that way any prospective wife will be pleasantly surprised when she actually meets them.

In this book, Junebug sets her sights on marrying off her gruff, oldest brother, Morgan. Junebug adores Morgan because Morgan has been like a father to her. Junebug knows Morgan is dying to get back to his life as a cowboy and is hoping to find him a wife so he won’t leave her. It also wouldn’t hurt if this wife happened to bake excellent pie! 😂

It was fun to see the quirky townsfolk again, & I especially loved Pip, the woman who answers Junebug’s latest ad. All her life Pip has been told she’s not pretty or feminine enough to land a husband and had given up hope until she saw Junebug’s ad and its cooking requirements. Pip is a fabulous cook, which gives her confidence to head to Montana. I loved watching Pip make her own happiness. Pip’s chaperone, Granny Colfax, is also a hoot who could teach Junebug a thing or two about shenanigans.

There’s of course a romance, & it’s a slow burn. Morgan is determined to send Pip away, but Pip gets under his skin. I liked how Pip gets past Morgan’s gruff exterior to reveal the big hearted man beneath. It was easy to see how they could be good together. Bless Junebug & her ads!

If fun historical romance is your vibe, be sure to check out this series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

❓QOTD: Favorite kind of pie? 🥧
📚 Review - The Kingmaker by Kennedy Ryan 📚 📚 Review - The Kingmaker by Kennedy Ryan 📚

Lennix is a 17 year old Native American who, when we first meet her, is speaking at a pipeline protest. The pipeline in question will run right through her tribe’s lands & Lennix isn’t having it.

21 year old Maxim is also at the protest because his father is the oil tycoon responsible for the pipeline. Maxim, who is studying climate science, is not in the family business and is appalled by what his father is doing.

Maxim is captivated by Lennix’s impassioned speech and when chance throws them together and they both get arrested, Maxim and Lennix end up really getting to know each other. There’s a mutual attraction there but nothing happens since Lennix is underage. Maxim also chooses not to tell Lennix who his father is.

When they happen to cross paths 4 years later, the attraction is still there and this time, Maxim and Lennix give in to it and both end up wanting more. But what will happen when Lennix finds out who Maxim really is and that his father is the man she hates most in the world?

This was a really good read! I really loved Lennix and admired her passion and her sense of determination. I don’t normally like having politics in the books I read, but in this case, I loved how Lennix used her voice to actually help elect candidates who have Native American’s best interests at heart.

I wasn’t quite as enamored with Maxim at first because of that lie of omission, but I understood where he was coming from and was really hoping he would come clean so he didn’t wreck his chances with Lennix since the two of them were so good together.

I also really loved the inclusion of Native American culture and traditions. One of my favorite scenes of the whole book was when Lennix described the Sunrise Dance ceremony where a girl becomes a woman.

The Kingmaker is actually the first installment in Kennedy Ryan’s All the King’s Men series and it ends with a cliffhanger that will have you screaming to get your hands on the next book!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thanks to @read_bloom & @netgalley for the e-arc. All opinions are my own.

❓QOTD: Are you okay with cliffhangers and open endings or do you prefer an ending with closure?
💜 Review - Unfortunately Yours by Tessa Bailey 💜 Review - Unfortunately Yours by Tessa Bailey 💜

Unfortunately Yours, which comes out June 6th, is the second installment in Tessa bailey’s A Vine Mess series.

I was excited to read this one because it features a marriage of convenience. I don’t come across that trope often but I always enjoy it when I do, especially when what was originally convenient suddenly becomes inconvenient because someone catches feelings. That’s exactly what happens between former Navy Seal August Cates and wine heiress Natalie Vos and I loved every minute of it!

August is serious book boyfriend material. He comes across as gruff and tough on the outside, but once we get to know him, it’s clear that he’s an overprotective softie with a big heart and a goofy sense of humor. August lost his best friend Sam in a combat mission and is now trying to honor Sam’s dream of owning a vineyard by starting myself. He needs money to make it happen though and no one will give him a loan.

Natalie is going through some stuff of her own, having just been fired from her Wall Street job for taking s bad risk and losing a lot of money. She has come home to regroup. Her trust fund would go a long way to help with that, but it’s off limits until she gets married thanks to her old fashioned dad.

Natalie can’t stand August but realizes they are in a unique position to help each other out. I admired Natalie’s resilience and determination to get her career back on track, but at the same, I couldn’t wait to see how this fake relationship with August was going to throw her for a loop.

In true Tessa Bailey fashion, the sparks fly & the heat rises as these two enemies eventually realize that what they feel for each other is far from hate!

Unfortunately Yours is such a fun, sexy, and heartfelt story. It’s the perfect read for a day at the beach! Thanks to @avonbooks for the review copy. All opinions are my own.

🐉 Review - FOURTH WING by Rebecca Yarros 🐉 🐉 Review - FOURTH WING by Rebecca Yarros 🐉

So it was not my intention to skip posting for two days, but this book had other plans for me. When I tell you I couldn’t put this book down until I knew how it ended, I’m not kidding. I’m currently drowning in dirty laundry and dishes from where I just ignored everything in my life until I got to the last page. 😅

The hype for Fourth Wing is definitely real and it not only lived up to the hype for me, but it exceeded my expectations and is now my new favorite read of the year. This primarily romcom reader did not see that coming at all.

I don’t know if there’s anything I can say that hasn’t already been said, so I’ll just hit the high points for me.

🐉 Violet, the underdog heroine. Born with a condition that impacts her joints and muscles, Violet has trained her whole life to work as a scribe in the library. Her mom, the General, has other plans though and at the last minute, assigns Violet to enter the deadly training grounds to become a dragon rider. Not only is Violet physically unsuited to this, but she is also surrounded by fellow cadets who happen to be children of executed traitors, and who would love to see her dead to get back at her mother.

I adored Violet. In the face of truly impossible odds, she’s smart, fierce and resilient. She’s also sassy and sarcastic, which is always a bonus for me.

🐉 Found Family. Even though she’s in a kill-or-be-killed situation, Violet still manages to assemble a wonderful group of loyal friends. Even one she thought would be her mortal enemy but ends up being so much more.

🐉 Dragons. Not only are they massive and awe inspiring, but they also bond with humans and can communicate with them!

🐉 Worldbuilding. From the magic system to the politics to the Hunger Games style training grounds, everything is just *chef’s kiss.”

❓QOTD - What’s the last book that lived up to the hype for you?

CIAO FOR NOW by Kate Bromley (pub date 6/6/2023)

Thanks so much to @katebromleywrites, @graydonhousebooks, and @delightfullybooked for this copy of Ciao for Now.

I adored Kate’s last two books so I cannot wait to dive into this one and share my thoughts with you all.

Here’s the Goodreads synopsis:

When an American interning at a fashion house in Rome butts heads with her professor's surly son, sparks fly!

With her thirties rapidly approaching and a mountain of student debt looming over her, Violet Luciano’s dream of finishing design school and working in fashion has cost her everything. So when she lands an internship at an up-and-coming fashion brand in Rome, she brings her A game to Italy. With nothing left to lose, Violet plans to win the competition among the interns for the ultimate prize—a job at a New York label.

But when a coffee run goes wrong and Violet accidentally destroys a stranger’s laptop, all of the apology Americanos in the world won’t help her. Because it turns out that the man from the café is Matteo, her professor’s eternally grumpy son, who thinks she’s a clumsy American…and maybe a stalker. Their animosity (and undeniable chemistry) grows as together they’re forced to face a summer of chic parties, adventures through Rome and sharing a home…with the person they can’t stand the most.

The more time she spends with him, the more distracted she finds herself. With her chance to win the competition slipping out of her grasp, Violet has to decide whether to say ciao to Matteo—or ciao to her dreams.

❓QOTD: If you had the opportunity to travel for two weeks, all expenses paid, where would you go?

Hey everyone, hope you're all having a wonderful weekend. I've been seeing the #gogreyinmay stack for a cause on my feed the past few weeks so I wanted to make sure I got my stack in before the end of May. This stack for a cause is being hosted by @brittanys_in_wonderland in honor of her late father. For every #gogreyinmay book stack she sees, she’ll be donating $1 to Children’s Pediatrics Brain Cancer research. There's still a few days left to join in if you would like to.

Thanks to @berkleypub #berkleypartner #berkleyIG and @netgalley for the e-arc!

I love a good sister story and writer duo Ali Brady really knocked it out of the park with their new novel, The Comeback Summer. It’s smart, fun, and heartfelt and just had me cheering the sisters on every step of the way.

They story follows Hannah and Libby, who have recently taken over their late grandmother’s PR firm. They are struggling to keep clients and are in real danger of going under. When Lou, an eccentric but wildly popular self- help guru tells them she is loooking for a new PR firm but will only consider them if they complete her 12-week “Crush Your Comfort Zone” program, the sisters reluctantly decide to go for it.

While there are sweet romantic interests for each sister, it was their journey as they each set out to crush their comfort zones that really made this book for me. There’s a tremendous amount of character growth there as Hannah and Libby learn so much about themselves, their relationship with one another, and where their true passions lie personally and professionally. I loved both the funny moments and the very realistic ups and downs that go along with any self help journey.

I devoured this book and can’t wait to read more from Ali Brady! The Comeback Summer is out now!

📚 🐈‍⬛ The Inheritance Games and Ninja 🐈‍⬛📚

I’m posting today mainly to celebrate that I have finished reading another series that has been lingering on my TBR for months, The Inheritance Games.

There has been tremendous hype surrounding this one, which is why I was hesitant to pick it up, and I don’t know if I just overhyped it in my own mind, but it just ended up being a solid okay read for me.

I liked the main character, thought the Hawthorne boys were an entertaining bunch, and I enjoyed the twists and turns of the overall plot.

When I was finished though, I snapped this pic and immediately tossed the books in my “to sell or donate” pile because I knew they just weren’t keepers for my collection.

I’d rate the series a solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫.

😻🐈‍⬛ That’s my cat Ninja in the photo. Being a ninja, he doesn’t often appear in my pics so I have to share them when he does decide to put in an appearance.

❓ QOTD: What’s a book or series you’ve read that didn’t live up to the hype for you?
