Goodreads Synopsis:  At seventeen, Norah has accepted that the four walls of her house delineate her life. She knows that fearing everything from inland tsunamis to odd numbers is irrational, but her mind insists the world outside is too big, too dangerous. So she stays safe inside, watching others’ lives through her windows and social media feed.

But when Luke arrives on her doorstep, he doesn’t see a girl defined by medical terms and mental health. Instead, he sees a girl who is funny, smart, and brave. And Norah likes what he sees.

Their friendship turns deeper, but Norah knows Luke deserves a normal girl. One who can walk beneath the open sky. One who is unafraid of kissing. One who isn’t so screwed up. Can she let him go for his own good—or can Norah learn to see herself through Luke’s eyes?

MY REVIEW

Louise Gornall’s Under Rose-Tainted Skies is a contemporary young adult novel that focuses on what it’s like to live with a mental illness.  The novel follows protagonist, seventeen year old Norah Dean, and the day-to-day challenges she faces because she has agoraphobia and OCD.  Up until about four years ago, Norah was living the life of a typical teen – going to school, hanging out with her friends – until one day something abruptly changes and she gets caught in the grips of a terrifying panic attack, an attack so severe that she loses consciousness. When she wakes up, everything is different and she finds herself suddenly terrified of doing all of the things she used to do.  When we first meet Norah, she is basically housebound.  She no longer attends school, instead doing her coursework online, and the only time she ever leaves the house anymore is to attend weekly therapy sessions, which are emotionally exhausting for her, not so much because of the therapy itself, but more so because of the stress having to leave the safety of her home causes her.  Because she has stopped leaving her home, she and her friends gradually drift apart and, by the time we meet Norah, her main social interactions are now with her mom and her therapist.  That is, until Luke moves in next door.  When he spots Norah peeking at him from her bedroom window, he decides to come over and introduce himself.

After a few awkward false starts, such as when Luke catches Norah “fishing” for her groceries out the front door with a long-handled broom because she’s too afraid to step out and retrieve them, Luke and Norah do finally meet and become friends.  At first Norah tries to hide all of the details of her mental illness from Luke for fear of how he will react, but Luke is pretty perceptive and picks up on it anyway.  She still withholds the extent of it, but does start to try to explain what she is going through.  As their friendship slowly develops into something more, Norah struggles with the idea that she really is not worthy of Luke because she may never be able to do “normal” boyfriend/girlfriend activities with him and believes that he deserves much more than she has to offer him.  This creates even more turmoil to Norah’s life as she must decide what she is going to do about Luke – let him in or let him go…

LIKES

Norah – I really adored Norah.  She’s smart and funny, incredibly resourceful when it comes to coping with her illness, and she’s also much braver than she gives herself credit for being.  I found Norah so likeable that I immediately wanted to know more about her condition since agoraphobia is something that I know next to nothing about.  Being in Norah’s head as she struggles through each day made the story especially powerful and gave me a much clearer picture of the illness and how truly crippling it can be.  Norah’s frustration is palpable throughout, especially the fact that she is very much aware that most of her fears were irrational, but still can’t stop their paralyzing effects.  By allowing us access to Norah’s thoughts, Gornall paints an authentic and vivid portrait of agoraphobia and allows us to see beneath the surface of what is often considered an “invisible” illness.

Luke – Luke is just as adorable as Norah is and I especially loved how determined he was to befriend Norah in the beginning of the story, no matter how much she tried to avoid him.  I don’t know that I completely bought into the idea of Luke and Norah as a romantic couple, but I was 100% into their friendship.  I liked that he really wanted to know more about Norah’s condition – not to judge her as Norah had initially feared – but so that he could interact with her in ways that would be most comfortable to her.

Romance is not a “cure” – Even though I didn’t completely buy into the romantic aspect of the story, I did really like how Gornall keeps it real.  Just as it wouldn’t happen in real life, having a boyfriend does not magically cure Norah.  Granted, she does have more of a support system now that she has Luke in her corner in addition to her mom and therapist, but the illness is clearly still there throughout the book.

Humor – Even though Norah’s struggles with mental illness are quite serious, I loved that the author was still able to incorporate some light and humorous moments into the story.  Norah occasionally finds herself in awkward situations, such as when she is shooing an obnoxious bird away from her window one day and new neighbor Luke sees her and thinks she is flirting with him.  As embarrassing as it was for Norah at the time, I liked that later in the book, as Norah gets more comfortable with Luke, she’s able to laugh that moment off and explain to Luke that she wasn’t flirting with him – It was that the bird was messing with her OCD.  Not that OCD is funny by any stretch of the imagination, but I did like that Norah was able to find humor and laugh at herself a bit rather than be humiliated about what happened.

DISLIKES

I can’t really say that there’s anything I disliked about Under Rose-Tainted Skies, although I would have  liked a little more for the ending, mainly because I felt it wrapped up a little too quickly.  I think that’s mainly because I had become so invested in Norah that I just didn’t want her story to end.  I wanted to follow her longer and see how she was doing.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Norah’s story is one that needs to be told and Louise Grovall does a beautiful job in telling it.  If you’re looking for a raw and honest look at the life of someone who is coping with agoraphobia and OCD, you should definitely check out Under Rose-Tainted Skies.

TRIGGERS

There is mention of self-harm and Norah’s therapist talks to her at length about it.

Blogiversary Giveaway # 1: Hardcover Copy of The Hate U Give

March 22, 2017/42 Comments/by Suzanne

It’s hard to believe this much time has gone by already, but The Bookish Libra turns one year old this week! I guess time flies when you’re doing something you love, right?  And I do love sharing my love of books!

I just want to take a moment to thank everyone who has visited my blog during this first year.  Your support and friendship has been so important to me and I very much look forward to continuing to get to know the book community.

As a token of my appreciation and of course to celebrate my blog’s milestone, I’m doing a couple of giveaways.  One will start today and the other will start on Friday, so be sure to check back then to see the second one.

Up first, I’m giving away a hardcover copy of the 2017 release, The Hate U Give, by Angie Thomas. This is such an important book that I think everyone should read so I want to do my part to make sure it gets into as many hands as possible.  I started reading it a couple of days ago and the cover does not exaggerate:  It is absolutely riveting.

In case there is anyone out there who isn’t familiar with this book, here’s the synopsis from Goodreads:

Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does or does not say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

This giveaway will run for 10 days, ending at midnight on April 1st, and is international (as long as The Book Depository ships to you. (List of countries TBD ships to).  The winner will be selected at random and will be contacted via DM on twitter to get shipping information for the prize.

Good luck to all who enter!

🎆 REVIEW - THE LIFE INTENDED 🎆

Author - Kristin Harmel

Original Pub Date - 12/30/14; Reissue Date - 9/1/26

As much as I love Kristin Harmel’s historical fiction novels, it has been such a treat reading her contemporary women’s fiction this year, first with Meet Me in Paris earlier this year and now with the re-issue of her 2014 book, The Life Intended.

The synopsis describes The Life Intended as Sliding Doors meets P.S. I Love You, which definitely intrigued me. The story follows Kate, a music therapist, who tragically lost her husband Patrick, the love of her life, soon after they were married. Kate grieves the loss of Patrick for years, but when we meet her 12 years later, she has moved on and is engaged to Dan. But has she really moved on?

Kate starts having these incredibly vivid dreams about Patrick. Specifically, she dreams that Patrick not only did not die, but that she and Patrick have built a life together and even have a child together, Hannah, who is a piano prodigy even though she is hard of hearing. These dreams are so vivid that Kate strruggles to distinguish dreams from reality and wonders what her subconscious is trying to tell her.

We follow her as she decides to take a sign language class, and as she, with the help of her instructor, also works with hard of hearing children who are in the NYC foster care system.

I found myself thoroughly invested in Kate’s journey and eager to find out the meaning of her dreams and how they tied together with all of these new experiences she was seeking out.

I also just really loved the overall message of the book, which is about how happiness without guilt is possible after grief and loss. You just have to choose to live rather than passively going through the motions.

Madeleine Maby narrates the audiobook and she did such a great job making me feel all of the conflicting emotions Kate was experiencing and capturing the overall tone of the story. It was a very moving performance!

🍁 Review - FALL INTO PLACE 🍁

Author - Kristyn J. Miller

Pub Date - 9/8/2026

Lenore has returned to her small Vermont hometown to spend some time at her grandmother’s farm before its sale goes through. Lenore is hoping for some closure but her brother is worried about her and asks his best friend Callam to keep an eye on her while she’s in town. This is easy for Callam to do since he is currently working as the groundskeeper on the farm, particularly in the apple orchard. What starts as a journey to find closure becomes so much more when Lenore and Callam reconnect.

I found this whole story to be so moving. I love a brother’s best friend romance and I thought this one was especially well done because of the way it’s interwoven with Lenore’s grief journey. Lenore’s ex grew impatient with her grief, saying that it had been long enough and she needed to move on, but Callam is the opposite. He understands that grief is different for everyone and lets Lenore’s grief journey take its natural course and is just there to support and care for her in whatever way she needs.

I just loved watching these two reconnect. When they were younger, Callam always considered Lenore off limits because of her brother, but things are different now and I really enjoyed them getting to know each other in this new way. I also loved how this journey home helps to reignite Lenore’s creativity. She’s an artist but has been struggling to paint for so long before returning to her hometown.

In addition to the romance, I also really enjoyed the little mystery subplot that runs through the story. Lenore finds some antique paintings in her grandmother’s attic and she and Callam go on a quest to learn who the painter is.

Highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a sweet, cozy, emotional small town romance that is filled to the brim with fall vibes.

Review - DISENCHANTED

Author - Lucy Jane Wood

Pub Date - 9/8/2026

(Shelf trophy purchased by me)

Disenchanted is the third book in Lucy Jane Wood’s whimsical witchy series, Rewitched.

This story follows a witch named Sage who believes her magic is harmful to those she cares about and so she desperately wants to be rid of it. She’s fascinated by the legend of a witch who was able to rid herself of her magic and when a book arrives on her doorstep that belonged to this witch, Sage can’t wait to open it.

When she does, however, chaos ensues and a curse is unleashed on her town and everyone in it. Sage tries to break the curse but knows she is in over her head. Will she reach out to enlist the help of the coven she has spent most of her life hiding from before she loses everyone she loves?

I was especially intrigued by the premise of this story since it’s not often I come across a witch who doesn’t want her powers. I also don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed seeing a curse play out as much as I enjoyed this one. It’s a whimsical curse involving pretty much every classic fairytale you can imagine. It’s most definitely a curse, but it’s a fun one to watch as it moves through the town.

There is the slightest hint of a romance between Sage and her best friend, which I would have liked to see more of, but the focus of this story was really on Sage and her journey to understand and appreciate her magical gifts, and for her to finally find happiness because she was just so down on everything when we first meet her. Disenchanted, as the title suggests.

If you’re looking for a whimsical witchy read to add to your fall TBR, definitely check out Disenchanted and the other books in the Rewitched series.

🍂 Review - LOVE FELT LIKE THIS 🍂

Author - Julie Olivia

Pub Date - 9/8/2026

Oh my goodness, Love Felt Like This was everything I hoped it would be and more! I love a grumpy-sunshine romance and I’m all about a single dad storyline, so this one was calling to me from the very first page. Heck, honestly from that gorgeous cover, lol.

I absolutely loved the premise too. Griffin is a famous rockstar, but he has had major writer’s block for a while now. He owes his label a new record but about the only thing he can write lately are children’s songs for his young daughter, Ava. Beverly is a puppeteer who writes children’s TV shows and she is currently desperately trying to save the one that has been her family’s life’s work.

When Beverly and Griffin appear on the same entertainment show and Griffin accidentally wanders onto the set while Bevery is performing, she rolls with it and makes him part of her act. Griffin is surprised by how much he actually enjoys it, and when he hears about Beverly’s predicament, he offers to write music for her show and even temporarily moves to her small town, pretending to be her boyfriend, so that he can work with her.

I truly loved everything about this story! Griffin and Beverly have the most incredible chemistry, both in their working relationship and as things start to heat up between them. I also adored every scene that featured Griffin’s daughter. Ava is the cutest little scene stealer, and it was so fun watching Griffin, Beverly, her whole family, and basically the whole town become a found family for her.

This story was so sweet, so heartfelt, and like I said, just delivered everything I wanted and more. You know the moment when you’re reading and finally find where the book’s title comes from? That moment was truly magical in this one and made me cry!

This book is perfect for fans of:

Small town romance
Grumpy-sunshine
Single Dad
Fake Dating
Found Family
Forced Proximity
Rockstar romance

🧹🐺 Review - HEXY BEAST 🐺🧹

Author - Avery Flynn

Pub Date - 9/8//2026

Hexy Beast is the third book in the Sherwood Witches spicy romcom series by Avery Flynn. I actually haven’t read the first two books in the series, but this worked well as a standalone for me.

It follows Effie Sherwood, who is the eldest but most impulsive and chaotic of the Sherwood Sisters. When she thinks Darius, the grumpy alpha werewolf has stolen her coven’s ancient book of spells, she decides to hop right on the back of his motorcycle while he’s making his getaway. Effie loves to push people’s buttons and as soon as she realizes how grumpy and buttoned-up Darius is, she can’t resist winding him up at every opportunity. To save face when he returns to his pack, Darius tells them that he has kidnapped Effie to hold her for ransom. Effie tries to use her magic to escape but keeps inexplicably snapping right back to Darius’ side. When the oracle tells them it’s because they’re actually fated mates, their reactions are the same “Oh, hell no!”, although neither can deny that they find the other irresistibly attractive.

This was such a wild ride and a good time! I thought it was hilarious how hard they both tried to fight the idea that they were actually fated mates but yet often fell into bed with one another because they couldn’t fight their mutual attraction. Their chemistry is undeniable and the sassy banter, especially from Effie, had me cackling as I was reading. It was fun watching them get to know one another better and actually work together when it becomes clear that someone in the pack is trying to take Darius’ spot as alpha.

I really enjoyed this witchy romcom and think I would have loved it even more if I had read first two books so I definitely want to do that at some point so I can meet Effie’s sisters.

💋 REVIEW - RECKLESS KISSES 💋

Author - Layla Kagen

Pub Date - 7/31/2026

There’s just something special about a friends to lovers romance and this one did not disappoint!

Knox Sterling is a self-made billionaire with a playboy reputation who has had a crush on his best friend, Amy, since they were kids. Amy is a grounding influence in Knox’s life, and he has never wanted to risk that friendship so he has kept his crush a secret for years. When he is in an accident and ends up in the hospital, however, he starts to think about life and how short it can be.

When Amy, who is a school teacher, asks Knox to help her chaperone a field trip and serve as a mentor to her students, he can’t say no. The trip doesn’t go as planned, however, and Knox and Amy end up stranded in a small town overnight and there’s only one hotel room available. That and one reckless kiss is all that it takes for everything to change between them.

Oh my gosh, this was such a fun listen! I love a reformed playboy storyline, and watching Knox yearn for Amy was everything. Their chemistry was incredible, both as friends and then as more than friends once all of that tension spills over, and I loved watching them together. There was just the right amount of spice after a slow burn buildup, and there’s also so much fun banter. I had a great time following their journey to a happily ever after!

The audiobook is narrated by J.F. Harding and Stella Hunter, who turn in fantastic performances as Knox and Amy. Their voices compliment each other so well and really brought these characters to life in such a vivid way.

This was also a quick listen and I was able to finish it in one afternoon while doing chores. It definitely made those chores so much more palatable, that’s for sure!

Reckless Kisses is the fifth book in the Sterling Brothers series but worked great as a standalone for me.

Highly recommend for fans of:

Billionaire Romance
Best Friends to Lovers
He Falls First
Forced Proximity
Only One Hotel Room

🔎 REVIEW - MOTHER DAUGHTER SISTER STRANGER 🔎

Author - Hank Phillippi Ryan

Pub Date - 9/1/2026

Mother Daughter Sister Stranger is an addictive, bingeable psychological thriller that is filled with the perfect amount of twists and turns. I’ve been wanting to try one of this author’s thrillers for a while now, and wow, I totally ate this one up!

Eliza’s niece, Piper, is supposed to be staying with her for one week while her mom is away. When Bea doesn’t show up and is unreachable by phone, Eliza heads to Bea’s house, only to discover that all of her clothes are missing. Abandoning her daughter is completely out of character for Bea, as is missing the Remembrance Day that honors their parents, so Eliza is sure that something awful has happened to her.

This is a fast paced, twisty thriller with short chapters that really keep things moving and help build suspense as Eliza desperately tries to figure out what has happened to her sister, while also trying to keep her niece safe and calm since of course Piper is starting to worry about her missing mom too.

Sometimes with thrillers, I love the twists and turns but don’t necessarily connect with the characters personally, but that was not the case here. I felt just as desperate to find Bea as Eliza and was completely invested in seeing how the story played out and was really hoping there was a happy ending for these sisters who have already lost so much.

The author also did a great job with the twists and turns and I was misdirected as to who was responsible a couple of times and ultimately did not figure it out before the reveal.

The audiobook was narrated by Stevi Incremona, who did an excellent job bringing the characters to life and giving them unique voices, as well as capturing the urgent tone and the ever building tension and suspense as long-buried family secrets are exposed, turning everything Eliza thought she knew upside down.

This was my final read of August and it ended up being my favorite of the month!

🧁 REVIEW - A TASTE OF MAGIC 🧁

Author - Tricia O’Malley

Pub Date - 8/25/2026

If you’re a fan of second chance romances, reality TV baking shows, and cozy romantasy, you’re going to want to check out A Taste of Magic. It’s the second book in Tricia O’Malley Scottish Charms series and it’s delightful!

It was so fun being back in the charming magical town of Briarhaven, where those with magic live openly and outsiders believe the magic is all an act to bring in tourists. I also loved getting Lyra’s story this time. Lyra MacGregor is a baker with a popular social media account. When a magical reality baking show wants to film in Briarhaven, Lyra immediately signs up, but then her magic decides to go wonky, turning sugar into salt, spoons into hedgehogs, etc. It’s too late to back out now though, although she would love to when she gets paired up with, of all people, her ex-boyfriend and high school sweetheart, Rabbie.

I love a good second chance romance, and it’s so clear from the moment Lyra and Rabbie start working together on the competation that they are both still harboring unresolved feelings for one another. There’s some tension but it soon gives way to a heartwarming journey for them, and I was here for every magical baking mishap as they found their way back to one another.

I really liked both characters too. Lyra is a bit chaotic, even when her magic doesn’t have a mind of its own, but she’s just so easy to like and to root for. Rabbie is Lyra’s opposite in many ways, but the two of them make a great team in every way. I loved how supportive he was of her, and determined the two of them were to find a way to make the competition work for them, even though he had never baked before and she can’t control her magic but can’t just not use it because of the contest rules.

The audiobook is narrated by John Hartley & Siobhan Waring, and they were just a delight to listen to. I thought the accents sounded authentic and that they both captured the whimsical and romantic vibe of the story.

💅 MATCH YOUR MANI MONDAY 💅 Hey book friends! I h 💅 MATCH YOUR MANI MONDAY 💅

Hey book friends! I hope you all had a great weekend and got plenty of reading time in.

Today I’m sharing some fun goodies that were #gifted to me by @oliveandjune. I’m not normally a big nail girlie - I’m rough on mine because I’m always typing for work, typing book reviews, or otherwise working with my hands. My manis don’t last long and I just end up cutting my nails short.

I’ve been eyeing Olive and June’s press on nails for a while now though since they come in such a variety of lengths and shapes and when they reached out and asked if I’d like to try some out, I couldn’t resist.

As you can see in my last slide, they sent several sets in a variety colors and a removal kit as well. The soft plaid nails immediately caught my eye and looked perfect for late summer early fall.

They were so easy to put on, lasted for well over a week even with me being rough on them, and they were easy to remove as well. I can’t wait to try some of the other colors. That velvet mocha is screaming fall, and the red looks perfect for Christmas! Thanks @oliveandjune!

Because I’m a book girlie at heart though, I of course had to match that plaid set of nails to some of my favorite orange, blue, and white @berkleyromance books.

📱 Review - THE PHONE SWAP 📱

Author - Lia Louis

Pub Date - 8/25/26

When they swap seats on a flight to London, scientist Allie Lake and actor Milo Ford somehow also swap phones & don’t realize the mixup until they reach their respective destinations.

Unfortunately for Allie, who needs her phone for her work, Milo is filming on location in Romania for three weeks. She’ll have to wait until he returns to London to get her phone back. In the meantime, they agree to play secretary for one another, relaying messages.

With all of the back and forth, Allie and Milo quickly become friends and develop feelings for one another. Just before they are slated to meet in London, somehow all of their private chats end up leaked to the media, and they each blame the other and immediately break all contact until two years later when they coincidentally end up on the same scientific mission in the Arctic. Trapped together in the Arctic, Milo and Allie are forced to revisit old wounds and old feelings, which are clearly still there.

I thought the premise of this story, the swapped phones, was such a fun and unique way to have a meet cute between characters. I also loved them bonding while playing secretary for one another. They had so many fun and flirty conversations as well as some meatier conversations with emotional depth as they got to know one another better.

I also loved what felt like kismet when they end up in the Arctic together. I mean, what are the odds of Milo doing a documentary that just happens to tie in with Allie’s research?

I could have done without the miscommunication, but even though it drove me crazy, it did feel realistic for their particular situation.

Bottom line, I found both characters to be very likeable, which made the story an enjoyable read and listen overall.

Rebecca Norfolk & Nikolas Salmon are both new-to-me narrators and they did a wonderful job bringing Allie and Milo to life & capturing both the humor & the more emotional moments between them.

👻 REVIEW - Paper Ghosts 👻

Author - Sarah Addison Allen

Pub Date - 9/1//26

If you’re looking for an atmospheric read to add to your fall TBR, I want to put Paper Ghosts on your radar. It’s a multi-generational family drama that is part love story and part ghost story. Set in a small town in North Carolina, it follows several generations of women from the Wester family and the gift, or curse depending on your perspective, that they all share.

I really enjoyed the way this story unfolds in a dual timeline. The first follows Willamena Wester back in 1976 where she meets and falls in love with musician named Jack. Willahema feels trapped and overly controlled by her grandmother and makes plans to run away with Jack, a decision that ultimately takes a tragic turn. The second timeline is set in the present day and follows Bailey Wester, who is Willamena’s granddaughter. Bailey has just returned to the small North Carolina town and even though her grandmother pushed her away years ago, the two of them reluctantly reconnect now that Bailey has returned. Reconnecting though stirs up long-buried secrets from the past.

I don’t want to give anything else away, but I am going to saw that these characters really got under my skin, esepcially the grandmothers, who I actually found pretty infurating becausae of some of the choices they made. They definitely kept me reading though so that’s something!

As we follow the two timelines, we explore the many ways that people, and especially the Wester women, can be haunted. Yes, there are actual spirits in the book, but equally haunting are old photos, memories, secrets, and a curse that just keeps giving.

I thought the writing was just so beautiful and atmospheric, loved the hints of magical realism and the Gothic vibes, and was impressed at how much of an emotional punch, this short book (only 277 pages) packed.

Marin Ireland narrates the audiobook & perfectly captures the emotional depth & the overall haunting tone of the story. Highly recommend!
