RECURSION Review

Wow, Blake Crouch has done it again! I didn’t think there was any way he could top the mind blowing reading experience of Dark Matter, but man, was I wrong…He really outdoes himself with his latest novel, Recursion, a gripping sci-fi read that explores what happens when memory storing technology designed to potentially help Alzheimer’s patients retain some of their memories ends up in the wrong hands.

The story follows Barry Sutton, a NYC police detective, and Helena Smith, a gifted neuroscientist.  Barry is sent to an address in New York where a woman is threatening to kill herself.  She has False Memory Syndrome, or FMS, a somewhat new phenomenon that keeps popping up more and more frequently. People who contract FMS suddenly develop a complete set of memories of a life that they haven’t actually lived.  The false memories are so vivid and detailed that they seem real, which causes those who have the condition to become completely confused about what is real and what isn’t.  The woman Barry has been sent to talk down from the roof suddenly started believing that she was happily married to a man that she really wasn’t.  The memories were so convincing that she sought out the man and discovered that he was happily married to someone else and had a family of his own.  Devastated by this discovery and armed with the knowledge that she’s really all alone in the world, she decides she doesn’t want to live.  Barry gets a taste of just how closely our memories dictate our reality and how it can all fall apart if we can’t trust those memories.

Eleven years prior to our meeting Barry, Helena Smith is hard at work trying to develop a technology that she hopes will help Alzheimer’s patients, including her own mother, retain some of their memories.  When a wealthy benefactor offers her nearly unlimited funding to fast track her research, Helena can’t resist.  All goes fantastically until she and her benefactor start testing the technology on live subjects and see all of its possibilities, both good and bad.  Fast forward eleven years and we can see firsthand the bad that can come of it and we see Helena’s and Barry’s journeys intertwine as they come together to try to stop what Helena has inadvertently set into motion.

What made Recursion such a phenomenal read for me was how Crouch manages to take this fictional memory storing technology, which, at first, sounds outrageous and completely impossible, and he transforms it into a scenario that seems completely plausible.  And because it actually does seem plausible, it starts to feel a little less like science fiction and a little more like a glimpse into our future.  The fact that there are potentially catastrophic consequences lends the story a real sense of urgency and ratchets up the tension and suspense.  The emotional and sometimes desperate reactions of those who are impacted by all of this mucking around with memories felt completely authentic too.  I sympathized with them so much and found myself wondering how I would react if I was in their shoes.  I loved that added emotional layer.

Crouch had me so caught up in this story that I was up until nearly 2a.m.one night because I just couldn’t go to sleep until I knew how the story was going to end.  I kind of hated myself the next day, but it was so worth it.  Plus, the writing is so crisp and smooth that it just naturally lends itself to binge-reading it.

Recursion is a powerful and mind blowing read that I just know I’ll be thinking about for a long time to come.  Aside from being a riveting page turner, it’s also a book that left me with some pretty major food for thought, namely the question of whether technology that has the potential to do an incredible amount of good is worth having if it also has the potential to do a devastating amount of bad if placed in the wrong hands.  If you enjoyed Dark Matter, you’re going to love Recursion.  And if you’re a science fiction fan, I highly recommend both novels.  They made Blake Crouch an auto-buy author for me.

GOODREADS SYNOPSIS:

Memory makes reality. That’s what New York City cop Barry Sutton is learning as he investigates the devastating phenomenon the media has dubbed False Memory Syndrome—a mysterious affliction that drives its victims mad with memories of a life they never lived.

Neuroscientist Helena Smith already understands the power of memory. It’s why she’s dedicated her life to creating a technology that will let us preserve our most precious moments of our pasts. If she succeeds, anyone will be able to re-experience a first kiss, the birth of a child, the final moment with a dying parent.

As Barry searches for the truth, he comes face-to-face with an opponent more terrifying than any disease—a force that attacks not just our minds but the very fabric of the past. And as its effects begin to unmake the world as we know it, only he and Helena, working together, will stand a chance at defeating it.

But how can they make a stand when reality itself is shifting and crumbling all around them?

MRS. EVERYTHING Review

I’ve always considered Jennifer Weiner to be the unofficial queen of “Chick Lit,” so when I requested her latest novel, Mrs. Everything, I was expecting a fun, sexy read. What I got, however, was so much more than I anticipated, and I mean that in the best possible way.  I honestly cannot remember the last time a book resonated with me as much as Mrs. Everything did.  It packs an emotional punch on many levels – it made me smile at times, but it also made me shed a few tears, and sometimes it even just made me angry and frustrated.  Why?  Because it accurately, vividly, and sometimes painfully explores how hard it can be to grow up as a woman, especially during the time period when the book is set.  The whole time you’re trying to figure out who you are and what your place in the world is, someone is looking over your shoulder trying to pigeon-hole you into some pre-determined notion of what makes an ideal woman, telling you your life will be best if you just do what you’re “supposed” to do.

Mrs. Everything captured my attention right away because it’s actually more of a historical fiction in that it follows two sisters, Jo and Bethie, from their childhood in the 1950’s through the sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll era of the 60’s and 70’s, all the way up to their senior years, including Hillary Clinton’s historic run for the U.S. Presidency in 2016.  Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres and Weiner does an incredible job of capturing each decade in terms of fashion, hair, pop culture references, etc. I truly felt transported back in time.

Weiner also captured my heart with Jo and Bethie.  When we first meet Jo as a child in the 1950’s, she’s a rebellious tomboy who would much rather wear jeans and read books than do anything her mother considers “ladylike.”  In contrast, Bethie is Mommy’s little princess, the epitome of beauty and femininity.  In their mom’s eyes, Bethie is doing everything just right in order to secure herself a husband who will take care of her when she’s an adult, while who knows what will happen to Jo since she’s clearly on the “wrong” path.  At first Jo had the bulk of my sympathy because her mother was so awful to her, always making her feel like she’s a disappointment, but later, when Bethie’s life doesn’t go as expected and her journey takes a darker turn, she earned my sympathy as well.

In following Jo and Bethie from childhood up into their senior years, Weiner fully explores what it was like to be a woman back in the latter 20th century all the way up to what it’s like now.  She takes us through the highs and lows, the successes and the failures, and most especially, how hard it can be to stand up and be brave when the easier path is often to let fear win out.  Even though the story takes a few dark turns through addiction and abuse, it’s ultimately a very uplifting story that shows how much has changed over time and proves women can be whoever they want to be: sisters, mothers, daughters, aunts, wives, friends, lovers, teachers, role models, and yes, even Presidential candidates (and hopefully Presidents someday!).

I feel like I just don’t have the words to convey just how powerful and moving a read this is, so I’m just going to close by saying this is one of my favorite reads of the year so far and that I highly recommend it to everyone!

GOODREADS SYNOPSIS:

From Jennifer Weiner, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of Who Do You Love and In Her Shoes, comes a smart, thoughtful, and timely exploration of two sisters’ lives from the 1950s to the present as they struggle to find their places—and be true to themselves—in a rapidly evolving world. Mrs. Everything is an ambitious, richly textured journey through history—and herstory—as these two sisters navigate a changing America over the course of their lives.

Do we change or does the world change us?

Jo and Bethie Kaufman were born into a world full of promise.

Growing up in 1950s Detroit, they live in a perfect “Dick and Jane” house, where their roles in the family are clearly defined. Jo is the tomboy, the bookish rebel with a passion to make the world more fair; Bethie is the pretty, feminine good girl, a would-be star who enjoys the power her beauty confers and dreams of a traditional life.

But the truth ends up looking different from what the girls imagined. Jo and Bethie survive traumas and tragedies. As their lives unfold against the background of free love and Vietnam, Woodstock and women’s lib, Bethie becomes an adventure-loving wild child who dives headlong into the counterculture and is up for anything (except settling down). Meanwhile, Jo becomes a proper young mother in Connecticut, a witness to the changing world instead of a participant. Neither woman inhabits the world she dreams of, nor has a life that feels authentic or brings her joy. Is it too late for the women to finally stake a claim on happily ever after?

In her most ambitious novel yet, Jennifer Weiner tells a story of two sisters who, with their different dreams and different paths, offer answers to the question: How should a woman be in the world?

THE FRIENDS WE KEEP Review

Jane Green’s latest novel The Friends We Keep is a beautiful and moving story about the ups and downs as we move through life and the friends we make while on the journey.  It follows Evvie, Maggie, and Topher, who met during their first year of college and became fast friends.  The story tracks each of them through life, from those carefree college years where the three of them lived together like one big happy family to those years after college when life just got in the way and they drifted apart.  The Friends We Keep really resonated with me because of its central themes about friendship – first, the idea that no matter how far friends drift apart, they always find their way back to each other, and second, a true friend will always find a way to forgive you, even if you make a seemingly unforgiveable mistake.

All three of the main characters drew me in right away because their lives were just so messy and complicated.  While their career paths (Evvie becomes a model and Topher becomes an actor) aren’t necessarily all that easy to relate to, the highs and lows they experience, the bad choices they sometimes make along the way, and the regrets that follow are all too relatable.  Green writes each of their stories with an authenticity that I think will resonate with many readers, especially those with similar lifelong friendships. As I was reading about Evvie, Topher, and Maggie, I was also constantly thinking about my own best friends and how much I treasure them.

I don’t want to give away anything about the overall plot of the story or the character’s individual journeys – you can read the synopsis for more details – but I did want to talk about one final theme that resonated with me.  Even though The Friends We Keep is a beautiful story about friendship, it does have its share of dark moments as the characters experience some of life’s lows and disappointments.  The message Jane Green so wonderfully conveys though is that it’s never too late for a second chance at happiness or to follow a new dream if your original dream doesn’t pan out.  Maybe it’s because of my age and where I am in life, but that message really hit home for me as I was reading.

I just started reading Jane Green’s novels last year but she is fast becoming a favorite of mine because her stories about family and friendships are so heartfelt and relatable.  If you’re in the mood for a story about life and the true meaning of friendship, give The Friends We Keep a try.

GOODREADS SYNOPSIS:

The Friends We Keep is the warm and wise new novel from Jane Green, New York Times bestselling author of The Sunshine Sisters and The Beach House.

Evvie, Maggie, and Topher have known each other since university. Their friendship was something they swore would last forever. Now years have passed, the friends have drifted apart, and none of them ever found the lives they wanted – the lives they dreamed of when they were young and everything seemed possible.

Evvie starved herself to become a supermodel but derailed her career by sleeping with a married man.

Maggie married Ben, the boy she fell in love with at university, never imagining the heartbreak his drinking would cause.

Topher became a successful actor but the shame of a childhood secret shut him off from real intimacy.

By their thirtieth reunion, these old friends have lost touch with each other and with the people they dreamed of becoming. Together again, they have a second chance at happiness… until a dark secret is revealed that changes everything.

The Friends We Keep is about how despite disappointments we’ve had or mistakes we’ve made, it’s never too late to find a place to call home.

🎸Review - SILVER SWEET 🎸

Author - Krista and Becca Ritchie

Pub Date - 8/4/2026

Silver Sweet is the second book in the Cobalt Empire series but works as a standalone. It’s a spicy M/M rock star romance that follows Tom Cobalt, the fifth-born in the wealthy Cobalt family.

Tom is a punk rock singer who dreams of making it big and has demanding standards when it comes to his band’s music. So demanding in fact, that every member of his band quits right in the middle of an album. Tom will be dropped from his label if he can’t find someone he can actually work well enough with to collaborate on an album.

Enter Phoenix St. Pierce, a talented drummer with a bad attitude, who has also managed to break up his band. When he and Tom meet, it’s instant dislike, but they’re willing to give it a try and see what happens. At first neither wants to compromise at all, but once they accept that there must be some give and take for this arrangement to work, their working and personal relationships start to evolve.

When I first picked this book up, I was a little nervous because it’s over 600 pages long. That said, I became so invested in Tom and Phoenix that those 600+ pages just flew by. Their chemistry is so intense, and they’re both so surprisingly romantic. When they see in each other what they have been longing for in a partner for so long, it’s truly magical. Tom and Phoenix are each battling inner demons, but they are so supportive and accepting of one another. I loved watching the two of them write music and perform together, and I truly melted at how protective Phoenix was of Tom, even willing to stand his ground against Tom’s over-protective older brothers.

Speaking of the Cobalt family, I loved how close knit and protective the Cobalt siblings are and I immediately wanted to know more about them.

The audiobook features Alex Kydd, Tim Paige,& Brooke Bloomingdale, who do a great job bringing these characters to life and capturing their emotions as well as the rock vibes. The audiobook elevated my overall experience.

🔮 Review - MAGGIE AND ARTHUR’S MAGIC MOMENT 🔮

Author - Leslie Rene

Pub Date - 7/28/26

What a delightful debut romantasy! If you’re like me and you enjoy books with an academic setting, and you also enjoy a magical setting, you’re definitely going to want to check out this book.

Maggie and Arthur are both professors at the same magical university. Arthur is a broody alchemist with celebrity status, while Maggie is the passionate professor of Linguistics and Incantation Translation. Maggie, whose budget was slashed to accomodate Arthur, is not a fan of his.

When an experiment gone wrong releases a ghostly pall and forces the closure of one of the campus buildings, Maggie is forced to share her tiny office with Arthur. Arthur is tasked with devising a spell to get rid of the pall and Maggie offers to help (to get him out of her space) & soon everything changes between them.

I was hooked on Maggie and Arthur from the very first scene in the book. They are both attending a magical masquerade ball at the end of the semester and not realizing who they were flirting with, they end up sharing an unforgettable kiss. As much as Maggie seems to actually loathe Arthur, I couldn’t wait for them to realize they had actually kissed each other and had incredible chemistry at the ball.

I really enjoy the rivals to lovers and forced proximity tropes and thought both were written so well here. What was also fun is that instead of being a grumpy-sunshine romance, both Arthur and Maggie are grumpy, which made me chuckle.

The tension, the banter, and the slow burn of the romance itself was fabulous, but I also just really loved them working together to eliminate the pall.

The writing is cozy but also atmospheric & suspenseful, and it was so easy to visualize the runes, the pall itself, the ghouls & banshees roaming around, and the actual haunted forest that is located near the school. Excellent worldbuilding & a truly magical read in every way!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

⚾️ REVIEW - JUST FOR THE PLOT ⚾️

Author - Meghan Quinn

Pub Date - 7/29/2026

Just for the Plot is the second book in Meghan Quinn’s Bay Area Players series, a spicy sports romance series that is fast becoming one of my favorites from her.

This time around we are focused on Bennett, a pro baseball player in San Francisco. He’s focused and disciplined, basically the golden boy of his team. I loved Bennett in the first book and it was so funny to watch all of that discipline and focus go out the window when Bower moves to town. Bower is his older sister’s best friend, and the woman he has been down bad for since he was a teenager.

Bower is a woman after my own book loving heart. She currently works as a caregiver, but she is a book obsessed girlie whose dream is to open her own bookstore. When Bower moves into Bennett’s apartment building and the two of them start a spicy bookclub together, I was truly in my happy place and loving every scene where they read together and especially when they shared their spicy bookish confessions. Those scenes were romance gold!

Bennett’s detemination to win Bower over and to make her see him as something other than his sister’s little brother made him just such an endearing character. The Gladdy Daddies group chat provided endless moments of hilarity that had me laughing out loud as he goes to them for advice on how to woo Bower.

I truly loved eveything about this book! The banter, tension, and the longing as we wait for Bower to finally see Bennett was absolutely perfect and had me cheering them both on so hard. It’s a slow burn, the payoff is so worth the wait and the spice is definitely spicing!

The audiobook is duet narrated by Teddy Hamilton and Samantha Brentmoor, two of my favorites, and they were perfection as always, perfectly capturing every emotion and making Quinn’s banter pop.

Highly recommend this one for fans of:

🪿Review - WILD GOOSE CHASE 🪿

Author - Sarah Adler

Pub Date - 7/28/2026

I had such a good time reading this one! I mean, how often do you come across a romance where the characters fall for each other while trying to track down a missing taxidermied goose? Just thinking about it makes me giggle. 😂

I’m also just such a sucker for a grumpy-sunshine romance and this one features Callahan, a grumpy antiques dealer and Annie, the ray of sunshine who has been brought in to help in Callahan’s store while his partner is away. These two butt heads right from the start, but there is also some major chemistry bubbling below the surface between them. I love the banter between them as Annie wants to infuse his shop wtih more personality and he wants no parts of it until Annie discovers the illegal and rare taxidermied goose he is hiding and blackmails him over it. Callahan’s ex found it in her attic and begged him for help in getting rid of it, and he just couldn’t say no. He really wishes he had though when it goes missing and he and Annie have to find it before someone else finds and report it.

I love romcom shenanigans and the premise of chasing after this goose definitely provides for lots of shenanigans. I laughed out loud so many times along the way and just loved watching Callahan and Annie grow closer while they’re trying to track down the goose. They’re opposites in so many ways - he’s grumpy and awkward, while she’s cheerful and very social - but they end up making a great team.

There’s also a great dual timeline that provides some context for how the rare goose came to be discovered.

If you’re in the mood for a charming and unique romcom, definitely check out Wild Goose Chase!

Kristin Harmel is one of my favorite historical fiction authors, but it was a real treat to dive into her latest novel, Meet Me in Paris, and realize it’s contemporary fiction. The synopsis describes it as Love, Actually meets The Notebook and that feels like a pretty accurate comparison.

The story follows nine Americans all at different points in their lives who have travelled to Paris. The one thing they all have in common is that they are trying to find their way to some kind of happy ending or at least a path forward for themselves. That’s a lot of characters to keep track of, but their stories all resonate so much that it ends up being very easy to keep everyone straight.

Some standouts for me were the mother and daughter who have planned a last minute trip after a terminal cancer diagnosis to make as many happy memories as possible. Then there’s the elderly gentleman who has traveled to reunite with the love of his life who he thought had died decades ago, only to learn that she is alive and in a memory care facility.

I thought this story was a beautifully written exploration of grief and loss, but also of love, second chances, and new beginnings. I was thoroughly invested in the characters I’ve already mentioned, but honestly in all nine of the characters’ journeys. Every character is so well developed, and I loved the way the story moved between each of their stories and some of their stories even become entwined in very moving ways.

Paris of course is the star of the story and is described so vividly that you’ll feel like you have travelled there with these characters and explored the charms of the city with them.

I read this one with my eyes and ears and find the audiobook to be especially captivating. Madeleine Maby narrates & does a wonderful job of making each character feel unique & of capturing the sad yet hopeful tone of the story.

Such a beautiful read!

📚WHAT I’VE BEEN READING FROM MY PHYSICAL TBR 📚 He 📚WHAT I’VE BEEN READING FROM MY PHYSICAL TBR 📚

Hey book friends! I have continued to work on my 26 in 2026 challenge to whittle down my physical TBR. I’m trying to clear some piles of books off my floor now so I’m coming at you with some quick thoughts on some recent reads.

✨Mr. Nice Spy by Tiana Smith - This was a really fun romance that felt half romcom, half romantic suspense. It features Andee, a fireworks designer, who along with Adam, a cute CIA operative, is kidnapped by her father, an international criminal. As they work to take down her dad, Andee and Adam. Loved the combo of banter and tension and high stakes action and suspense. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

✨Rewind It Back by Liz Tomforde - The final book in the Windy City series, it’s a sweet and spicy second chance romance featuring childhood friends who are now neighbors. Filled with so much pining and also amazing found family vibes. Great finale for a wonderful series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

✨Wild Card by Elsie Silver - This is the final book in the Rose Hill series and it features a romance between Gwen, a yoga instructor, and Bash, a firefighter pilot, who happens to be the dad of Gwen’s ex. I thought this was written well and in a way that had me rooting for Gwen and Bash, but also rooting for Bash and his son to find their own path forward. Recommend for fans of age gap, grumpy sunshine, and heartwarming, spicy romances. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

✨Sunshine & Spice by Aurora Palit - This was a fun read that features some of my favorite tropes - grumpy/sunshine & fake dating.. As fun as the romance is, what I liked most was the cultural aspect as the FMC gets to learn so much about her own Bengali culture and traditions. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

✨Walkoff Wedding by Maren Moore - Final book in the Orleans University series and it’s a great combo of sweet & spicy romance. It features Grant and Addie, online penpals who become friends even though they are opposites in every way. This leads to a marriage of convenience to save Addie from an unwanted marrage arranged by her father. Loved Grant and Addie and it was also great to see characters from the other boo
✨ FIVE STAR FRIDAY ✨ SCORE by Kennedy Ryan Pub D ✨ FIVE STAR FRIDAY ✨

SCORE by Kennedy Ryan

Pub Date - 5/19/2026

I have read so many great books this month, but my absolute favorite so far has been Score by Kennedy Ryan. It’s the second book in her Hollywood Renaissance series and it is both a moving second chance romance and a very realistic portrayal of mental illness and how it can impact, not just of the person with the illness, but also their friends and loved ones.

Verity Hill is studying screenwriting in college when she meets and loves in love with musician Monk Bellamy. Even though they have only known one another for a short time, their connection is intense and both of them feel like they are each other’s end game. That is, until Verity inexplicably throws it all away and ends up leaving school and leaving Monk behind, heartbroken. Ten years later they are reunited when they are both hired to work on a film together, reopening not only old wounds, but also the renewed possibility of a future together. Verity now knows why she did what she did in college, but does she have the courage to share everything about back then with Monk?

Oh my gosh, you guys! The way I just ate this book up! One of my favorite things about how Kennedy Ryan writes is that her characters are so complex, layered, and real. I felt like I knew these characters so well, to the extent that I didn’t just feel like I was reading about them. I felt like I was right there in the room with them, eavesdropping on and witnessing their most vulnerable moments, yelling at Verity to just tell Monk the truth, that the truth has to be better than what he has been thinking for the past decade.

I also thought Ryan’s depiction of bipolar disorder was so well done. I felt like it was described accurately and that it was handled with great care. One of the characters from Reel, an actress who ends up working on the film in this book, has Lupus, and I thought Ryan handled that chronic illness with the same respect and care.

Filled with outstanding writing, authentically messy characters, and a second chance romance that had my whole heart, I can’t recommend this book highly enough.

💍 Review - MARRIED WITH BENEFITS 💍

Author - Ellie Palmer

Pub Date - 7/21/2026

What a delightful read this was! I loved both main characters and thought the premise of the story was such a fresh take on the marriage of convenience trope.

Lainey Davis really wants to leave her small hometown. Unfortunately, every dime she has goes to paying for her expensive prescription migraine medicine.

Elliot Hodge has just inherited the land where Lainey house sits. At first he’s annoyed that Lainey, by way of squatter’s rights, owns the house on his property, but when he learns of her migraines and insurance woes, he proposes marriage - he’ll put her on his health insurance which is much better than hers, and in exchange, she’ll let him buy her out.

Because most of the property is in need of serious repairs, Elliot and Lainey move in together and then work side-by-side to fix the place up. All of the sudden, what began as fake starts to feel all too real.

I adored both Lainey and Elliot. Lainey is an artist and a whirlwind of chaos and disorder, but she also has a strong sense of independence and resourcefulness. She has had to get creative to make ends meet, but she’s making it work.

Elliot is her total opposite in most ways and is frankly alarmed by some of the things she does to make ends meet, but at the same time, he can’t help but be charmed by her and impressed with her sense of independence.

The dynamic between them was a fun one and I thought they had fantastic chemistry.

The book is filled with tension, hilarious banter and endless shenanigans as these two work together and grow closer, but it also has some emotional depth as both characters are on journeys of personal growth.

Highly recommend this one for fans of:

Marriage of Convenience
Forced Proximity

I was thrilled to receive these stunning paperback editions of the first three books of the Ever Seas series by L.J Andrews. For those who are interested in these, the first two books are already available in paperback and on August 11, 2026, book 3 will also be available on paperback. All ahead of the October 6, 2026 hardcover release of book 4, The Stolen Crown.

I’ve been wanting to read this series for so long, so I dove into the first book as soon as I received it. I’m about halfway through and I’m obsessed!

I don’t want to spoil the whole series, so I’ve just included the synopsis of the first book.

The Ever King synopsis:

They stole his crown, so he stole their daughter…

For years Erik, the scarred king of the Ever Kingdom, has thought of nothing but vengeance against the man who killed his father and trapped him beneath the waves, making him a prisoner in his own realm.

Until his enemy’s daughter unintentionally breaks the chains on the Ever, and Erik makes her the unwitting pawn in his vicious game of revenge.

She’s innocent. He’s vicious.

But he will take back what he lost, no matter the price. Unless she steals his heart first.

Welcome to the passionate world of the Ever Kingdom where pirates, sirens, and fae collide with Vikings in a dark fantasy romance between a villain and the innocent princess who holds his heart.

💍 Review - NOT THAT KIND OF PROPOSAL 💍

Author - Victoria Lavine

Pub Date - 7/21/26

(Physical copy purchased by me)

Gracie works as a wedding planner at Larkwood Estate and she also lives in a cottage on the property, courtesy of the kindly owner of the estate. When the owner passes away, she leaves Larkwood to her grandson, Jude, a divorce attorney who has zero interest in keeping the estate, much less carrying on with the wedding planning tradition. After a meet cute that turns contentious as soon as they realize the awkward position they are in, Jude agrees to give Gracie the summer to convince him to change his mind. Even more awkward is that she will be planning her ex’s wedding while doing so.

I love a good opposites-attract romance and what could be more opposite than a wedding planner and a divorce attorney! I was rooting for Gracie and Jude from their very first meeting, which actually takes place at Jude’s grandmother’s funeral. They just immediately have this electric chemistry and that connection persists, even when they are at odds over Larkwood, which gives the reader pages and pages of amazing banter to swoon over.

I love that Gracie is able to get Jude to actually take part in the wedding planning process, which leads to so many hilarious moments between the two of them.

Like Gracie, I was super annoyed at Jude for being so vague about why he didn’t want to keep the property or do weddings there anymore, but I fell hard for him when we finally learn why he’s so determined to do things his way. I don’t want to spoil anything here, but I loved how the author wove this more sensitive topic into this otherwise fun and light-hearted read.

I read the e-arc and then re-read on audio and think both formats are fabulous. Marie Smith and Will Kirk narrate the audiobook and were just a joy to listen to, the way they bring Jude and Gracie to life!

🔮 BOOK FEATURE - PRACTICAL MAGIC 🔮 Thanks for the 🔮 BOOK FEATURE - PRACTICAL MAGIC 🔮

Thanks for the free book @berkleyromance #BerkleyPartner #Berkley

This gorgeous new deluxe paperback edition of Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman is available as of today. It is releasing a few months ahead of the upcoming movie sequel, Practical Magic 2.

My photos don’t really do it justice, but this deluxe edition featured purple sprayed edges with “Fall In Love Whenever You Can” stenciled on them. It also features a celestial themed cover with beautiful foil detailing.

I think most are familiar with this book and its popular movie, but for those who aren’t, I’ve included the synopsis below.

🔮 Synopsis:🔮

The Owens sisters confront the challenges of life and love in this bewitching novel from New York Times bestselling author Alice Hoffman.

For more than two hundred years, the Owens women have been blamed for everything that has gone wrong in their Massachusetts town. Gillian and Sally have endured that fate as well: as children, the sisters were forever outsiders, taunted, talked about, pointed at. Their elderly aunts almost seemed to encourage the whispers of witchery, with their musty house and their exotic concoctions and their crowd of black cats. But all Gillian and Sally wanted was to escape.

One will do so by marrying, the other by running away. But the bonds they share will bring them back—almost as if by magic...

🧑‍🍳 REVIEW - YES, CHEF 🧑‍🍳

Author - Grace Reilly

Pub Date - 7/21/26

This was such a fun read! It basically has everything I look for in a spicy summer romance. It has just the right balance of tension, chemistry, banter, and steam, but with the added layer of emotional depth as both main characters are trying to prove themselves, both to themselves and to those who doubt them.

Jack is a chef working at an elite NYC restaurant, until he has a very public meltdown that gets him fired. Poppy is the daughter of the restaurant owner and she also happens to be a popular social media influencer. When she is publicly dumped the same night Jack gets fired, Poppy decides it’s time to get away. She’s tired of her family belittling her career choice.

When Jack returns to his Florida hometown to deal with a restaurant he has inherited from his mentor, Poppy hatches a plan where she and Jack will work together to get the restaurant up and running, with him handling the actual restaurant aspects while she promotes Jack and the restaurant on social media. Jack is game, but only if Poppy will also learn the ins and outs of the restaurant side of things as well, including taking cooking lessons from him.

I loved the chemistry between Jack and Poppy. He’s grumpy, while she’s pure sunshine, and even though they push each other’s buttons, they eventually start to realize that they make a pretty good team. I thought their banter was so fun, but the slow burn and the tension between them was absolutely fantastic!

In addition to the romance, I found so much more to enjoy about this book. I thought Jack’s grief journey as he mourns his mentor was handled really well. I was also really into Poppy’s journey and loved watching her grow and figure out what she really wants out of life.

Samantha Summers and Troy Duran narrate the audiobook and I really enjoyed both of these narrators and the life they infused into the characters. They perfectly captured the emotionns and overall vibe of the book.
