I’ve been loving paranormal romances lately and Lana Ferguson really delivers with her latest novel, Under Loch and Key. The idea of cryptids, particularly the Loch Ness Monster, has always fascinated me, so the concept of this book, where the Loch Ness Monster is actually a young man who is the victim of a generations-long curse just really called to me.

What called to me even more though is that this paranormal romance features two of my favorite tropes, enemies-to-lovers and grumpy-sunshine.  So not only is the Loch Ness Monster really a hot young man named Lachlan Greer, who turns into Nessie at night, but he’s also bit of a grump who has a grudge against the MacKay family and is more than happy to let Keyanna MacKay know about it when they first cross paths and he has to rescue her before she falls into the dangerous loch.

I loved watching the sparks fly between Keyanna and Lachlan when they first meet, but both of their stories just tugged at my heartstrings once I got to know more about them. Keyanna’s story was especially heartbreaking, as she has come to Scotland to spread her father’s ashes. He was the only family she had and she is just lost without him and hoping to connect with his estranged family in Scotland.  Things don’t go well when she first arrives and then she has an angry confrontation with Lachlan so my heart just went out to her.  But then as soon as I learned about the curse and all that Lachlan has had to deal with that wasn’t of his own making, my heart went out to him as well.

When Keyanna discovers Lachlan’s secret and starts to develop strange powers of her own and realizes that she might be able to help Lachlan, I loved that the two of them learn to trust each other enough to put aside their differences and work together to try to break this curse. I was really rooting for the two of them in every possible way.

If you enjoy paranormal, enemies to lovers romances, Scottish settings and lore, and heartwarming family stories, you can’t go wrong with Under Loch and Key.

Thanks so much to Kristin Cipolla for the invitiation to participate in the blog tour. Under Loch and Key is available now!

Can’t Wait Wednesday: FIRST-TIME CALLER by B.K. Borison

November 20, 2024/4 Comments/by Suzanne

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, which encourages fellow bloggers to spotlight upcoming releases that we’re excited about.  It is a meme that I have  loved participating in since I first started blogging, but as Jill is no longer actively posting, from now on I’ll be linking to Can’t Wait Wednesday, hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings, which is a spinoff of the original WoW meme.

* * * * *

My selection for this week is FIRST-TIME CALLER by B.K. Borison. I loved this author’s Lovelight Farms series so I’m excited to see that she has a new series coming out early next year and I love that the first installment is inspired by Sleepless in Seattle!

FIRST-TIME CALLER by B.K. Borison

by Berkley

Publication Date: February 11, 2025

Goodreads:

A hopeless romantic meets a jaded radio host in this cozy, Sleepless in Seattle-inspired love story from beloved author B.K. Borison.

Aiden Valentine has a secret: he’s fallen out of love with love. And as the host of Baltimore’s romance hotline, that’s a bit of a problem. But when a young girl calls in to the station asking for dating advice for her mom, the interview goes viral, thrusting Aiden and Heartstrings into the limelight.

Lucie Stone thought she was doing just fine. She has a good job; an incredible family; and a smart, slightly devious kid. But when all of Baltimore is suddenly scrutinizing her love life-or lack thereof—she begins to question if she’s as happy as she thought. Maybe a little more romance wouldn’t be such a bad thing.

Everyone wants Lucie to find her happy ending… even the handsome, temperamental man calling the shots. But when sparks start to fly behind the scenes, Lucie must make the final call between the radio-sponsored happily ever after or the man in the headphones next to her.

If you are looking for an entertaining romcom that will help you escape reality for a while, look no further than Her Knight at the Museum!

The story follows Emily Porter, a recently divorced conservator at the Art Institute of Chicago. Emily has been tasked with restoring a statue of a medieval English knight for an upcoming exhibit. As she begins her task, she keeps imagining that she hears the knight speaking to her, which is crazy, right? Well, when Emily gives in to the voice she’s hearing and kisses the knight, imagine her surprise when he actually comes to life!

It turns out that Sir Griffin de Beauford really is, in fact, a medieval English knight, who was presumed dead in the late 1400s, but who was actually cursed by a ruthless enchanter and turned into a statue. For all of these years, he has been able to see, hear, and think, but has been unable to move or speak. Emily’s kiss has apparently broken the curse and now Sir Griffin must learn how to navigate the challenges of 21st century America, with Emily’s help, of course.

Oh my goodness, this was just so fun and so cute! You definitely have to suspend disbelief and just go with the flow since the concept is a little out there, but once you do that, it’s just such a good time and the chemistry between Sir Griffin and Emily is just perfect! Their interactions have the perfect blend of knightly chivalry and spice, and I couldn’t resist rooting both for Sir Griffin to find a way to successfully live in modern society of course for he and Emily to find their way to a happily ever after.

If you enjoy movies like A Night at the Museum or Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, this book would be a great choice for you!

Thanks so much to Stephanie Felty at Berkley for the blog tour invite!

💜 Review - MAID FOR EACH OTHER 💜

Author - Lynn Painter

Pub Date - 7/15/25

In Maid for Each Other, Abi is a grad student working multiple jobs to make ends meet. When she learns her apartment needs to be fumigated, Abi decides it won’t be a problem if she spends a few nights at the penthouse she cleans since Declan, the owner, is never there anyway. That is, until the owner’s parents pay a surprise visit and mistake her for Declan’s girlfriend, also named Abby, whom they have never met.

After talking to his parents, Declan is outraged to find out someone has been living in his apartment. Why? Because there is no Abby. He made her up so everyone would leave him alone about his lack of a love life.

Once Declan finds out the culprit is his housekeeper, he plans to confront her and get her fired, but by the time Abi is done with him, Declan is so off his game, he has instead entered into a fake dating arrangement with her where she’ll continue to stay in his penthouse, he’ll go stay in a hotel, and he’ll pay her in exchange for her being the perfect corporate girlfriend to impress all of his business associates.

Lynn Painter is one of my go-to authors when I want a laugh out loud funny rom-com and she really delivers in this one! The banter between Abi and Declan is just so much fun, especially because Declan comes across as such a grumpy, stuffed shirt early on & Abi brings out his softer, more likable side.

The story also has Pretty Woman, Maid in Manhattan, opposites attract vibes since Abi and Declan come from such different backgrounds. I also thought it was a fun twist that Abi was studying creative writing & was using the fake dating experience as fodder for her writing assignments.

I saw that Teddy Hamilton was one of the narrators so I had to do an immersive read since he’s one of my favorites. He & Saylor Bell Curda were fantastic as Abi & Declan. They made Painter’s dialogue sparkle & the chemistry between the characters undeniable.

⚽️ Review - RELATIONSHIP GOALS ⚽️

Author - Brittany Kelley

Pub Date - 7/8/25

I was sold on reading Relationship Goals as soon as I heard that it had Ted Lasso and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days vibes. Those are both favorites of mine so I hoped I was in for a treat, and this book did not disappoint!

Abby Hunt is an actress who is looking to get her career back on track and has landed what she hopes will be her breakout role. As part of the research for that role, she is shadowing the director of a pro soccer team and meets Luke Wolfe, the gorgeous but grumpy star player of the team. She is surprised but delighted when he asks her out, not realizing that his bosses have forced him to in order to rehab his image and get off the protected list, Luke and Abby are having a great time together, and Luke might even be catching feeling, in spite of their relationship’s fake origins, but then Abby finds out that he was forced to ask her out and decides to get even with him for using her.

I had such a good time with this book! Abby and Luke had the best chemistry, and I just loved their flirty banter. The story definitely had all of the Ted Lasso and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days vibes, but I’d also say it had some Schitt’s Creek vibes as well because Abby reminded me so much of Alexis Rose. She was just this quirky character who lacked a filter but who was also very endearing. Some of her antics while trying to get back at Luke were a bit over the top, but they just made me love her all the more and wanted Luke to find a way to redeem himself to her. I did love Luke too though, especially when the real reason for him needing to get off of that protected list comes out.

The audiobook was narrated by Justis Bolding and Sean Patrick Hopkins and this duo was just fantastic as Abby and Luke, really highlighting their amazing chemistry and making that banter pop.

🏔️REVIEW - THE WOMAN IN SUITE 11 🏔️

Author - Ruth Ware

Pub Date - 7/8/25

It has been ten years since the terrifying events of The Woman in Cabin 10, and in this sequel, Lo Blacklock is back and looking to revive her travel journalism career, which has been dormant for a few years, partly due to the pandemic but also because she took time off to start a family with Judah and now has two young sons.

When Lo receives an invitation to attend the press opening of a luxury Swiss hotel owned by reclusive billionaire Marcus Leidmann, she decides to go for it. If she can score an interview with the reclusive billionaire, it could be exactly what she needs to jumpstart her career. Once Lo arrives and is summoned to meet Marcus, she is met by an old “friend” from the first book who helped Lo.

This friend is Marcus’s mistress and claims to be in mortal danger. She needs Lo to help her escape from Marcus. Lo is not excited about this, but doesn’t feel like she can say no after everything this person did for her. This begins an exciting cat and mouse pursuit across Europe.

Since I just binged The Woman in Cabin 10 last month, I remembered the characters and events clearly so it was a treat to jump right into this book and see Lo encounter some of those same characters again. Lo is still a messy, flawed character, making choices she probably shouldn’t be making, especially since she now has a family at home, but at the same time, I get that her heart is in the right place in wanting to help the person who helped her. Boy, does she get herself into some sticky situations because of it though!

The further along into the book you go, the more of a wild, twisty ride it becomes and the whodunnit aspect of the story kept me guessing until the end. A few things that happen are a little over the top but I was entertained and wasn’t bothered by that.

I also did this one as an immersive read, which I didn’t do for Cabin 10, and I really enjoyed that experience. Imogen Church’s narration is outstanding!

Chasing Shelter, the next installment in @catherinecowlesauthor’s Sparrow Falls romantic suspense series, comes out on July 22nd.

Keely is the adorable, bow-obsessed daughter of grumpy single dad, Trace, and today we are posting photos to share Keely’s love of bows and all forms of accessories. #nationalkeelybowday

As you can see from my second photo, my cat Ninja is also bow-obsessed. He stole the bow right out of my little photoshoot. 😂

I’m getting ready to start reading my arc of Chasing Shelter as soon as I finish my current read, and I’m so excited. I just love this series!

🎀 Chasing Shelter synopsis 🎀

I came here seeking sanctuary, I never meant to fall for the broody single dad next door.

I’ve spent my life hiding in plain sight, burying my past beneath layers of carefully constructed lies. Moving to Sparrow Falls was supposed to be a fresh start. A place to lay low. But when I end up living next door to the single dad who just happens to be one of my brother’s best friends, everything changes.

Trace Colson sees too much, asks too many questions, and his protectiveness is as infuriating as it is alluring.

And when danger comes calling, it’s Trace who stands between me and the darkness.

But being close to him is its own kind of risk. Because with every heated glance and every stolen touch, Trace tempts me to open my heart, to dream of a life I’d long since given up on. The only problem? Trace has his own demons, and when they collide with mine, the fallout could destroy us both.

Forever.

🎧 Review - THE GAME IS AFOOT 🎧

Author - Elise Bryant

Pub Date - 7/8/2025

The Game is Afoot is the second installment in the Mavis Miller cozy mystery series and it is another fun ride! If you’re a fan of Finlay Donovan or even Vera Wong, you should definitely come and meet Mavis Miller. I think you’d love her vibe!

Mavis is a divorced single mom who is doing it all and then some. She’s also tired of her job where she is never appreciated and one day abruptly quits.

Her initial plan is to take some much needed “me time” while she figures out her next steps, but she instead dives headfirst into being even more of a supermom for her daughter Pearl than she already is, becoming class mom and chauffeuring Pearl around to all of her extracurricular activities.

As if Mavis wasn’t busy enough, when Pearl’s soccer coach unexpectedly dies on the field and the circumstances of his death start to look suspicious, Mavis decides she needs to investigate his death as well. She figures trying to solve a murder will be a nice distraction from all of the other chaotic things she has going on in her personal life at the moment.

I just love Mavis! Some of the messy situations she gets herself into are so relatable. She also gets into some situations that are over the top, but they are laugh out loud hilarious, and I couldn’t get enough of them. Watching her deal with annoying parents, play amateur detective, try to navigate her feelings about the men in her life, and all the while being that supermom to Pearl had me wanting to send Mavis for a day at the spa myself.

I think the balance between Mavis’s family life and the murder mystery is nicely done, and I also really enjoyed that the murder mystery aspect was both funny and also twisty enough that I couldn’t figure out who did it.

Aure Nash narrates the audiobook and I just love her as Mavis and she also does a great voice for Pearl. She really brings out the humor in Bryant’s writing and that combined with the fast pace of the story overall had me binging this audiobook in a day at 1.7x speed.

🐶 Review - PUGS & KISSES 🐶

Author - Farrah Rochon

Pub Date - 7/15/25

I had never read one of Farrah Rochon’s books before, but I grabbed Pugs & Kisses for review as soon as I saw it being marketed as perfect for fans of Abby Jimenez and Jasmine Guillory. I’m so glad I did too because this was just the cutest second chance romance I’ve read in a while!

Evie Williams is a veterinarian who works at her fiancé’s animal. Well, she does until she walks into her house and finds him in bed with another woman. Now that she’s out of a job and minus a cheating fiancé, Evie stops in at an animal rescue shelter where she used to volunteer and unexpectedly runs into Bryson Mitchell, her college crush and the man who broke her heart years ago when he ghosted her. Bryson is back in town and now a famous veterinary surgeon, and he’s going to be working at the shelter too.

I really enjoyed how Rochon wrote both of these characters. The feelings between Evie and Bryson are clearly still there, but there’s some hesitation because of what happened in the past. I loved how when they realize the shelter is in danger of closing though, they immediately pull together to try to save it, which provides them a chance to really get reacquainted with one another and eventually to have that much needed conversation about why Bryson ghosted Evie the way he did. They make a great team everywhere that it counts and I so wanted them to get that second chance.

I also just adored that they were both dog parents. As a dog lover, I was just eating up all of the charming pets in this book!

🎧I read this one with my eyes and ears and thoroughly enjoyed the narration of Marissa Hampton. Her performance really highlighted the humor and the heartwarming qualities of the story and I enjoyed the distinctive voices she gave to the different characters. It was an entertaining listen.

⚓️ Review - THE WOMAN IN CABIN 10 ⚓️

Author - Ruth Ware

Pub Date - 7/19/16

Lo Blacklock is a travel journalist who has just landed a dream assignment, an all expenses paid trip aboard a boutique luxury cruise ship to cover its maiden voyage. Just before she’s scheduled to take the job, however, someone breaks in Lo’s home while she’s there, locking her in the bathroom while they go through her things.

Lo chooses to go on the cruise ship assignment anyway, but is still clearly rattled by the burglary. The first night aboard the ship, Lo hears a woman scream and a large splash. When she looks outside, she is sure she sees a hand in the water, disappearing beneath the surface.

Convinced someone has gone overboard, Lo reaches out to the crew but no one believes her. All guests and members of the crew are accounted for. Lo is convinced she’s right though and starts investigating on her own. Will she uncover something sinister or have her own recent experiences rattled her even more than originally thought?

I love locked room thrillers and Ruth Ware is one of my go-to authors when I’m in the mood to read one. She does such an amazing job of capturing that feeling of being in a confined space, in this case the small cruise ship and its even smaller cabins, and how it can start to feel almost claustrophobic once that element of danger enters the scene.

I also liked the added twist of not knowing if we could trust Lo. Has there really been a murder or are we following a woman who has been traumatized and really needs to talk to someone about her trauma?

Even though I wasn’t sure I could trust Lo at first, I was still invested in following her to see if she was right or not. I would say that if you find the pacing a little slow at the beginning to just hang in there because at a certain point, things really take off and it becomes an intense and suspenseful ride to the end. I thought the beginning was a bit of a slow burn but ended up binge reading the book in a couple of sittings and loving all of the twists and turns.

Thanks so much to @hambright_pr and @j._bengtsson for the gifted digital copy of this book!

I’ve been loving rockstar romances lately and I think this one is a real standout!

Jake McKallister might be a successful rockstar now, but he is the survivor of an unspeakable crime that still haunts him to this day. In many ways, music has saved his life and some days, it’s the only thing that gets him through. He knows he’s a broken man and that personal relationships really aren’t an option for him. That is, until he meets Casey Caldwell at a friend’s wedding. When she doesn’t treat him like a celebrity and instead immediately pranks him with the corniest of jokes, Jake laughs and lets his guard down for what feels like the first time in ages.

I really enjoyed the way the author wrote these characters and was invested in Jake and Casey from this very first meeting. She is just such a breath of fresh air and seems to be exactly the kind of person Jake needs in his life. Casey point blank tells Jake, rockstar or not, she’s not going to sleep with him at the wedding so they spend the entire time chatting and getting to know each other. It was so sweet watching the two of them bond and I liked that they both just seemed more free to be themselves around each other than around anyone else. It became clear pretty quickly that they shared a special connection and that Casey might finally be the key to Jake fully healing from the trauma that has haunted him for so long.

The story does take somewhat of a dark turn as Jake finally starts to open up about everything he went through, but I was so glad he had Casey and his family there to support him. There are definitely some heartbreaking moments, but the story definitely still has plenty of humor and romance to balance out those weightier moments.

Cake is perfect for fans of the following tropes:

🛡️Tortured hero
🎸Rockstar
❤️‍🔥Soulmates
🥂Opposites attract
🎬Celebrity romance
🎀Girl next door
🤐Dark secret
🔪True crime
🖤Psychological romance

🩵 Review - THE LAST SECOND CHANCE 🩵

Author - Lucy Score

Pub Date - Originally published 1/21/16, re-released by Bloom 5/6/25

Lucy Score is one of my go-to authors when I’m in the mood for a small town romance, and I’ve really been enjoying her Blue Moon series. The Last Second Chance is the third book in the series, and this is Joey and Jax’s story. I’ve been waiting for this one because it’s a second chance romance and whatever happened to drive them apart has been hinted at in the earlier books, but I’ve been dying to know the full story.

Joey and Jax were high school sweethearts, head over heels in love, but one night while out driving, they got into a horrific car accident that left Joey in the hospital. While Joey was still recovering, Jax abruptly left town and moved to Hollywood. Eight years later, he returns, a successful filmmaker, acting like no time has passed and looking to rekindle his romance with Joey. Joey hasn’t forgotten Jax and may still have strong feelings for him. Joey, however, most certainly has not forgiven him for the way he just abandoned her.

Their story actually made me more emotionally than I was expecting it to because their past is just so heartbreaking. Of course this is still a romcom though so there are plenty of humorous moments along the way as Joey makes Jax work his butt off to earn her forgiveness. I loved that once he pulls his head out of his you-know-what, he’s willing to put in the work to try to win her back and has plenty of help from the townsfolk who also think he and Joey are meant to be together. Between all of the romcom shenanigans and some very heartfelt, paintul but necessary conversations about what really happened eight years ago, this book just had me feeling so many emotions and I was right there with the good people of Blue Moon rooting for Joey and Jax to find their way to a happy ending.

If you like small towns, second chances, horse farms, and lovable, quirky characters, you should check out The Last Second Chance and the Blue Moon series.

🩷 Review - OVERRULED 🩷

Author - Lana Ferguson

Pub Date - 7/1/25

Sparks fly between rival divorce lawyers both in the courtroom and between the sheets in Lana Ferguson’s new spicy romance novel, Overruled.

Danica “Dani” Pierce has no interest in love, as experience has shown it to be nothing but a source of heartache. She is solely focused on her career, specifically on making partner at her law firm. She can’t believe her luck when she lands a career-making case, only to learn her nemesis, Ezra Hart, will be her opposing counsel on the case. Not only will he make it hard for her to win the case, but she’s also secretly sleeping with him, which makes things even more awkward. Ezra may have a winning record in the courtroom, but his charm has never worked on Dani. He wishes she would see him as more than the playboy she seems to think he is.

I had such a good time with this book! Enemies to lovers is my favorite trope, and I loved the twist of Dani and Ezra having this secret “enemies with benefits” arrangement. Lana Ferguson always delivers when it comes to writing spicy scenes so Dani and Ezra’s arrangement was pure fun. Their chemistry was off the charts and their banter was hilarious, especially the nicknames they had for each other. Dani had black cat energy and I cackled every time Ezra called her Sour Patch!

Aside from being fun and spicy, this story also had some nice depth to it. I really enjoyed watching Dani and Ezra gradually grow closer. Dani is so fiercely independent and afraid of letting herself be vulnerable with another person. I was rooting hard for her to get past that because it was easy to tell that Ezra could be worth the risk and that he was not the playboy she thought he was.

🎧I did an immersive read & thoroughly enjoyed the narration of Connor Crais & Samantha Summers, especially the way they made Ferguson’s banter pop off the page. I listened comfortably at 1.7x.
