Top Ten Tuesday – Books I Plan to Read This Summer

June 16, 2020/52 Comments/by Suzanne

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is Books I Plan to Read This Summer.  I’m a mood reader and, on top of that, I’m also ridiculously indecisive so putting together TBR lists is always challenging for me.  Needless to say, what I’m sharing is a tentative list and it’s more than ten because I just couldn’t narrow down to just ten I’m excited about.  I’m also still actively working on my backlist challenge so my list is a mix of ARCs and older books I’m planning to read.

Books I Plan to Read This Summer

1. MEXICAN GOTHIC by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

An isolated mansion. A chillingly charismatic artistocrat. And a brave socialite drawn to expose their treacherous secrets. . . .

From the author of Gods of Jade and Shadow comes “a terrifying twist on classic gothic horror” (Kirkus Reviews) set in glamorous 1950s Mexico—“fans of classic novels like Jane Eyre and Rebecca are in for a suspenseful treat” (PopSugar).  After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She’s not sure what she will find—her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemí knows little about the region. (Read more...)

2. WHAT YOU WISH FOR by Katherine Center

From Katherine Center, the New York Times bestselling author of How to Walk Away comes a stunning new novel full of heart and hope.

Samantha Casey loves everything about her job as an elementary school librarian on the sunny, historic island of Galveston, Texas—the goofy kids, the stately Victorian building, the butterfly garden. But when the school suddenly loses its beloved principal, it turns out his replacement will be none other than Duncan Carpenter—a former, unrequited crush of Sam’s from many years before.

When Duncan shows up as her new boss, though, he’s nothing like the sweet teacher she once swooned over. He’s become stiff, and humorless, and obsessed with school safety. Now, with Duncan determined to destroy everything Sam loves about her school in the name of security—and turn it into nothing short of a prison—Sam has to stand up for everyone she cares about before the school that’s become her home is gone for good.

3.  10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT PINKY by Sandhya Menon

The follow-up to When Dimple Met Rishi and There’s Something about Sweetie follows Pinky and Samir as they pretend to date—with disastrous and hilarious results.

Pinky Kumar wears the social justice warrior badge with pride. From raccoon hospitals to persecuted rock stars, no cause is too esoteric for her to champion. But a teeny-tiny part of her also really enjoys making her conservative, buttoned-up corporate lawyer parents cringe.  Samir Jha might have a few . . . quirks remaining from the time he had to take care of his sick mother, like the endless lists he makes in his planner and the way he schedules every minute of every day, but those are good things. They make life predictable and steady.

Pinky loves lazy summers at her parents’ Cape Cod lake house, but after listening to them harangue her about the poor decisions (aka boyfriends) she’s made, she hatches a plan. Get her sorta-friend-sorta-enemy, Samir—who is a total Harvard-bound Mama’s boy—to pose as her perfect boyfriend for the summer. As they bicker their way through lighthouses and butterfly habitats, sparks fly, and they both realize this will be a summer they’ll never forget.

4. PARIS IS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA by Jenn McKinlay

It’s been seven years since Chelsea Martin embarked on her yearlong post-college European adventure. Since then, she’s lost her mother to cancer and watched her sister marry twice, while Chelsea’s thrown herself into work, becoming one of the most talented fundraisers for the American Cancer Coalition, and with the exception of one annoyingly competent coworker, Jason Knightley, her status as most talented fundraiser is unquestioned.

When her introverted mathematician father announces he’s getting remarried, Chelsea is forced to acknowledge that her life stopped after her mother died, and that the last time she can remember being happy, in love, or enjoying her life was on her gap year. Inspired to retrace her steps–to find Colin in Ireland, Jean Claude in France, and Marcelino in Italy–Chelsea hopes that one of these three men who stole her heart so many years ago, can help her find it again.

From the start of her journey nothing goes as planned, but as Chelsea reconnects with her old self, she also finds love in the very last place she expected.

5. BLACKTOP WASTELAND by S.A. Cosby

A husband, a father, a son, a business owner…And the best getaway driver east of the Mississippi.

“Sensationally good—new, fresh, real, authentic, twisty, with characters and dilemmas that will break your heart. More than recommended.” —Lee Child

Beauregard “Bug” Montage is an honest mechanic, a loving husband, and a hard-working dad. Bug knows there’s no future in the man he used to be: known from the hills of North Carolina to the beaches of Florida as the best wheelman on the East Coast. He thought he’d left all that behind him, but as his carefully built new life begins to crumble, he finds himself drawn inexorably back into a world of blood and bullets. When a smooth-talking former associate comes calling with a can’t-miss jewelry store heist, Bug feels he has no choice but to get back in the driver’s seat. And Bug is at his best where the scent of gasoline mixes with the smell of fear.

Haunted by the ghost of who he used to be and the father who disappeared when he needed him most, Bug must find a way to navigate this blacktop wasteland…or die trying.

Like Ocean’s Eleven meets Drive, with a Southern noir twist, S. A. Cosby’s Blacktop Wasteland is a searing, operatic story of a man pushed to his limits by poverty, race, and his own former life of crime.

6. WHEN WE LEFT CUBA by Chanel Cleeton

In 1960s Florida, a young Cuban exile will risk her life–and heart–to take back her country in this exhilarating historical novel from the author of Next Year in Havana, a Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick.

Beautiful. Daring. Deadly.

The Cuban Revolution took everything from sugar heiress Beatriz Perez–her family, her people, her country. Recruited by the CIA to infiltrate Fidel Castro’s inner circle and pulled into the dangerous world of espionage, Beatriz is consumed by her quest for revenge and her desire to reclaim the life she lost.

As the Cold War swells like a hurricane over the shores of the Florida Strait, Beatriz is caught between the clash of Cuban American politics and the perils of a forbidden affair with a powerful man driven by ambitions of his own. When the ever-changing tides of history threaten everything she has fought for, she must make a choice between her past and future–but the wrong move could cost Beatriz everything–not just the island she loves, but also the man who has stolen her heart…

7. THE GIVER OF STARS by Jojo Moyes

From the author of Me Before You, set in Depression-era America, a breathtaking story of five extraordinary women and their remarkable journey through the mountains of Kentucky and beyond.

Alice Wright marries handsome American Bennett Van Cleve hoping to escape her stifling life in England. But small-town Kentucky quickly proves equally claustrophobic, especially living alongside her overbearing father-in-law. So when a call goes out for a team of women to deliver books as part of Eleanor Roosevelt’s new traveling library, Alice signs on enthusiastically. The leader, and soon Alice’s greatest ally, is Margery, a smart-talking, self-sufficient woman who’s never asked a man’s permission for anything. They will be joined by three other singular women who become known as the Packhorse Librarians of Kentucky.

What happens to them–and to the men they love–becomes an unforgettable drama of loyalty, justice, humanity and passion. These heroic women refuse to be cowed by men or by convention. And though they face all kinds of dangers in a landscape that is at times breathtakingly beautiful, at others brutal, they’re committed to their job: bringing books to people who have never had any, arming them with facts that will change their lives.

Based on a true story rooted in America’s past, The Giver of Stars is unparalleled in its scope and epic in its storytelling. Funny, heartbreaking, enthralling, it is destined to become a modern classic–a richly rewarding novel of women’s friendship, of true love, and of what happens when we reach beyond our grasp for the great beyond.

8. THE GARDEN OF SMALL BEGINNINGS by Abbi Waxman

In the spirit of A Man Called Ove and Good Grief–a poignant, funny, and utterly believable novel about life and loss.

Give grief a chance . . .

Lilian Girvan has been a single mother for three years–ever since her husband died in a car accident. One mental breakdown and some random suicidal thoughts later, she’s just starting to get the hang of this widow thing. She can now get her two girls to school, show up to work, and watch TV like a pro. The only problem is she’s becoming overwhelmed with being underwhelmed.

At least her textbook illustrating job has some perks–like actually being called upon to draw whale genitalia. Oh, and there’s that vegetable-gardening class her boss signed her up for. Apparently, being the chosen illustrator for a series of boutique vegetable guides means getting your hands dirty, literally. Wallowing around in compost on a Saturday morning can’t be much worse than wallowing around in pajamas and self-pity.

After recruiting her kids and insanely supportive sister to join her, Lilian shows up at the Los Angeles botanical garden feeling out of her element. But what she’ll soon discover–with the help of a patient instructor and a quirky group of gardeners–is that into every life a little sun must shine, whether you want it to or not…

9. WITH THE FIRE ON HIGH by Elizabeth Acevedo

With her daughter to care for and her abuela to help support, high school senior Emoni Santiago has to make the tough decisions, and do what must be done. The one place she can let her responsibilities go is in the kitchen, where she adds a little something magical to everything she cooks, turning her food into straight-up goodness. Still, she knows she doesn’t have enough time for her school’s new culinary arts class, doesn’t have the money for the class’s trip to Spain — and shouldn’t still be dreaming of someday working in a real kitchen. But even with all the rules she has for her life — and all the rules everyone expects her to play by — once Emoni starts cooking, her only real choice is to let her talent break free.

10. THE HAMILTON AFFAIR by Elizabeth Cobbs

Set against the dramatic backdrop of the American Revolution, and featuring a cast of iconic characters such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and the Marquis de Lafayette, The Hamilton Affair tells the sweeping, tumultuous, true love story of Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler, from tremulous beginning to bittersweet ending—his at a dueling ground on the shores of the Hudson River, hers more than half a century later after a brave, successful life.

Hamilton was a bastard son, raised on the Caribbean island of St. Croix. He went to America to pursue his education. Along the way he became one of the American Revolution’s most dashing—and unlikely—heroes. Adored by Washington, hated by Jefferson, Hamilton was a lightning rod: the most controversial leader of the American Revolution.

She was the well-to-do daughter of one of New York’s most exalted families—feisty, adventurous, and loyal to a fault. When she met Alexander, she fell head over heels. She pursued him despite his illegitimacy, and loved him despite his infidelity. In 1816 (two centuries ago), she shamed Congress into supporting his seven orphaned children. Elizabeth Schuyler Hamilton started New York’s first orphanage. The only “founding mother” to truly embrace public service, she raised 160 children in addition to her own.

With its flawless writing, brilliantly drawn characters, and epic scope, The Hamilton Affair will take its place among the greatest novels of American history.

Mini Reviews: TAKE A HINT, DANI BROWN & I WAS TOLD IT WOULD GET EASIER

June 15, 2020/31 Comments/by Suzanne

Today I’m sharing reviews of a couple of contemporary reads that are coming out in the next couple of weeks.  I adored both of these novels; they were just the perfect reads to distract me and help pass the time while stuck in quarantine because of the pandemic.

Mini Reviews: TAKE A HINT, DANI BROWN & I WAS TOLD IT WOULD GET EASIERTake a Hint, Dani Brown (The Brown Sisters, #2) Goodreads

Author: Talia Hibbert

Publication Date: June 23, 2020

Publisher:  Avon

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley.  All opinions are my own.

I wasn’t sure Talia Hibbert would be able to top Get a Life, Chloe Brown, but as much as I enjoyed that book, I fell head over heels in love with Take a Hint, Dani Brown.

Dani is a professor and is absolutely brilliant at most things…the one exception to that being love.  When it comes to matters of the heart, she is admittedly completely clueless and therefore just doesn’t even try anymore.  All she wants out of life is to be successful professionally and academically, and a friends-with-benefits relationship on the side to satisfy her physical needs.  When the universe places Zaf, a tall, dark, and handsome university security officer in her path, Dani thinks it must surely be a sign.

Zaf, however, has other ideas when it comes to love. An avid reader of romance novels, Zaf knows what he wants too and it’s all about romance and a happily ever after for him.  When a chance encounter between Zaf and Dani is captured on video and goes viral,  it’s game on, especially when both he and Dani realize their video is actually generating positive buzz and much-needed donations to Zaf’s sports charity for kids.  Dani agrees to pose as his girlfriend for a while to keep that positive press coming. Zaf is great with this arrangement at first, but finds his attraction to Dani growing with every encounter.   Can Zaf win Dani over to his way of thinking when it comes to love and romance?  Or can Dani persuade Zaf that her way is the way to go?

The main characters, Dani and Zaf were both so adorable. I just couldn’t get enough of them.  The chemistry and sexual tension between them is off the charts, and I just loved all of their flirty banter.  Dani is so outspoken when it comes to her thoughts on sex and it cracked me up because she could so easily fluster Zaf and leave him blushing.  I love the fake dating trope because it makes for such a fun storyline, but man was I rooting for these two to get together for real.  They were just so perfect for each other, and I devoured page after page eagerly waiting to see what would happen between them.

If you’re looking for a quick, fun and sexy read with a “Will they or won’t they?” vibe, definitely check out Take a Hint, Dani Brown. You won’t regret it!  4.5 STARS

Mini Reviews: TAKE A HINT, DANI BROWN & I WAS TOLD IT WOULD GET EASIERI Was Told It Would Get Easier Goodreads

Author: Abbi Waxman

Publication Date: June 16, 2020

Publisher:  Berkley Books

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley.  All opinions are my own.

I became a huge fan of Abbi Waxman’s writing and her sense of humor when I read The Bookish Life of Nina Hill last year, so I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy of her latest book, I Was Told It Would Get Easier.

I fell in love with this book as soon as I started reading it and realized it was about a mother and daughter taking a road trip to visit colleges and especially as soon as I felt the tension between them.  I love those complicated relationship dynamics and couldn’t wait to dive in and learn more about what was going on with these two.  Jessica and her daughter Emily used to be very close, but as often happens when our children enter their teen years, things get a little more challenging, and in this case, mother and daughter have gradually grown apart.  Jessica is really hoping this college tour will give them a chance to bond; however, Emily doesn’t even know if she wants to go to college so she isn’t overly invested in the trip and doesn’t know how to tell her mom that college may not be for her.  Emily is also completely distracted by a potential scandal that seems to be unfolding at the private school she attends. This all makes for an even more strained mother-daughter dynamic as they embark on this trip.

While Jessica and Emily’s emotional journey is definitely at the heart of I Was Told It Would Get Easier, the novel is also filled with Waxman’s trademark humor, especially when it came to the actual college tours, which sometimes went completely off the rails in the most amusing ways.  The cast of secondary characters was very entertaining as well, filled with a nice mix of characters I loved and even a couple that I loved to hate, which is always fun.  I also enjoyed watching Emily and Jessica interact with other kids and their parents.  Waxman’s mix of heart and humor kept me turning the pages, as did the dramatic hints of some trouble brewing at Jessica’s workplace as well as that school scandal Emily seems to be obsessing over.

Abbi Waxman definitely has another winner on her hands with I Was Told It Would Get Easier.  I whole heartedly recommend it to anyone who enjoys heartwarming and humorous reads and stories that focus on mother-daughter relationships.  4.5 STARS

Lucy Foley’s The Guest List is an atmospheric thriller that centers on a high society wedding event gone wrong.  The wedding in question is that of Jules and Will.  Jules is a successful magazine publisher, while Will is an up and coming reality TV star.  With an exotic location, designer gowns, and boutique whiskey, Will and Jules’ wedding is shaping up to be the stuff dreams are made of.  That is, until it turns into a nightmare, complete with a dead body.

I was very intrigued by all the different points of view the author chose to use in this story.  We get alternating chapters from Jules, the bride; Olivia, Jules’ sister and only bridesmaid; Hannah, the wife of Jules’ best friend; Johnno, the best man; and Aoife, the wedding planner.  When I first started reading, I thought this was such an odd assortment of characters to choose and was eager to find out why in the world they had been selected.  As the story started to come together, it became obvious why these characters had been selected and I was eager to learn more about them, particularly what each of them was hiding since it was clear they all had secrets they were holding close to their chests.

In addition to the seemingly random points of view that weren’t so random after all, the author also uses a very effective timeline to pull together all of the threads of this mystery.  The Guest List begins the night of Jules and Will’s wedding. A fierce storm has blown in just after the ceremony and the guests are riding out the storm inside.  The environment quickly turns chaotic as the power starts flickering on and off and then the guests start to hear screams. It’s clear that something has gone terribly wrong and the ushers decide it’s up to them to go out and investigate the source of the screams.  The story then alternates between following the aftermath of discovering the dead body, and following the events that led up to the discovery of the body, with special attention to certain members of the wedding party and guests to see what, if any, role they played in the tragedy.

While I loved watching the different points of view and the two timelines come together, it was the atmospheric remote setting of The Guest List that really took this story to the next level for me.  It’s set on a small island off the coast of Ireland.  The island is practically deserted and is rumored to be haunted, and is composed of a landscape that is rocky, wild, and particularly dangerous if you stray from the designated paths.  All I kept thinking as I was reading was “Who in their right mind would want to have a wedding in such a dangerous and creepy place?”

I don’t want to give away any details since this is a thriller, so I’m going to close now before I say too much.  If you’re a fan of creepy atmospheric, slow burn thrillers reminiscent of Agatha Christie and Ruth Ware, you’re going to love The Guest List.

Hi, I'm Suzanne. Proofreader by day, book blogger by night, devourer of books 24/7. My reading tastes: Basically you name it, I probably like it. I read a lot of contemporary and historical, both adult and YA, and I've also been enjoying more and more fantasy lately. Hobbies include: buying and hoarding of books, rambling about books to anyone who will listen, and trying to recommend books to my family and friends whether they are readers or not - because seriously, how can you not love to read books?

📚 EVERYTHING I READ IN SEPTEMBER 📚 Hey book frien 📚 EVERYTHING I READ IN SEPTEMBER 📚

Hey book friends! I hope your October is off to a great start. I’m so excited that we’ve made it to spooky season but honestly cannot believe that it’s October 1.

Thanks to a couple of long weekends, I had a very good reading month in September and finished 23 books. Three of those were books I started in August but didn’t finish by month’s end, but I was also able to get all of my September ARCs read and managed to finish quite a few on my physical TBR, including the longest book that is on my 26 in 2026 challenge reading list. My photo features all of the physical copies I read, but I also read a few e-arcs and listened to several audiobooks as well.

As always, I’m a little behind on reviews so expect to see a few of these books reviewed in the coming days.

❓QOTD: How was your reading month? What were some of your favorite September reads? What book will be your first read of October?

🧹REVIEW - TAKE A CHANCE, SASHA SINCLAIR 🧹

Author - Ashley Herring Blake

Pub Date - 9/29/26

Looking for books to add to your spooky season TBR? You’ll want to take a chance on Take a Chance, Sasha Sinclair. This is the third book in the Clover Lake series, but it works great as a standalone and is the perfect spicy sapphic romance for spooky season.

Sasha is grieving the loss of her parents and it also trying to fulfill one of their unrealized dreams, which was to film a documentary about the Bishop family and the legend of the Rose Witch that permeates their family history. The Bishop women, have always been side-eyed by those in their community, and so are very protective when it comes to their ancestors, some of whom date back to the Salem Witch Trials. Sasha persuades the Bishops to share their history with her, on the condition that they get final approval as to whether the documentary is released.

Sasha is told that the hardest Bishop to get to cooperate with her will be the eldest sister, Margot, and their working relationship becomes all the more complicated when Sasha and Margot, not realizing who each other were, hook up the night before Sasha is slated to meet the Bishops. As defensive as Margot tries to be, she can’t deny that she is attracted to Sasha, and the feeling is definitely mutual. Trying to fight those feelings are keep things professional only proves mostly impossible.

I loved the dynamic between Sasha and Margot. There’’s so much tension between them but also some pretty incredible chemistry. I was rooting for the two of them because I could tell they could be so good together, if Margot would just let her guard down.

I also found myself thoroughly engrossed in the Bishop family history as Sasha and Margot uncover more details about the Bishop ancestor than even Margot knew existed, including a secret relationship between Alice Bishop and a woman named Rose.

If you like spicy romance, suspenseful ghostly lore, witchy vibes & queer representation, you can’t go wrong with this one!

🏒 Audiobook Review - TAKING SIDES 🏒 Author - Rebe 🏒 Audiobook Review - TAKING SIDES 🏒

Author - Rebecca Jenshak

Pub Date - 9/29/2026

Narrators - Full cast narration by Austin Stone and Lucy Rivers, featuring performances by Christian Fox, Teddy Hamilton, Jason Clarke, Rylan Lee Dunlap, Savannah Peachwood, Erin Mallon, and Mollie Stark.

Thanks to @mustloveaudio for the gifted ALC!

Taking Sides is the third book in Rebecca Jenshak’s Moonshot Hockey romance series. I haven’t read the first two books in the series, but after reading and loving this one, which worked great as a standalone, I definitely want to go back and read those.

Conrad and Whitney were truly just the most adorable couple. Whitney is a school teacher and a hockey coach. She typically has no interest in dating hockey players, but there’s just something about Conrad that really appeals to her. Conrad might be a pro hockey player, but he is a total rookie when it comes to interacting with women. His teammates adore him and are always trying to play wingman for him, but Conrad is nothing but shy and awkward around women and as he eventually confesses to Whitney, he’s also a virgin.

I absolutely adored Conrad and found his awkwardness so endearing. I was also glad that Whitney seemed to find it equally endearing because their first date is a complete disaster, but she gives him a second chance and is just so patient with him that all of their interactions just made me swoon. I loved how she is able to gently bring him out of his shell, both in and out of the bedroom.

The romance was fantastic, and I also really enjoyed the found family vibes that were present with the Moonshot teammates. The full cast audiobook narration really brought that aspect of the story to life perfectly, and Austin Stone and Lucy Rivers were also fantastic as Conrad and Whitney. Their voices worked so well together and really highlighted the chemistry between the characters, as well as the tension when Whitney’s brother finds out she’s dating his arch rival.

Such a fun and bingeable listen!

👻 REVIEW - FREE FALLING 👻

Author - Lyla Sage

Pub Date - 9/22/2026

Free Falling is the perfect small town romance to kick off your spooky season reading. It’s the second book in the Sweetwater Peak series, and it’s equal parts haunting, steamy, and cozy. I had a great time during my first visit to this haunted small town, but I enjoyed my second visit even more!

Clarke Cartwright is an easy character to relate to because she just has so much on her plate. She’s in charge of her family’s antique store, but is facing major (and expensive) repairs that need to be completed, and is just all around struggling to keep her family’s legacy going. She also has the unique ability to see and communicate with spirits, which she tries to avoid if possible because the side effects of this “gift” are overwhelming. On top of everything else, she’s battling depression.

The last thing Clarke needs is the ghost of Leith’s dad following her around trying to talk to her. Once she finally listens, however, she realizes Leith’s dad wants her to deliver a message to Leith about a clause in his will that could hamper his ability to claim his rightful inheritance. When Clarke delivers the message, she and Leith decide to team up and help one another. Nothing like some fake dating and forced proximity to make people discover their true feelings for one another. .

I really enjoyed this story! Clarke and Leith have great chemistry and I loved how tender and supportive they each are for the other. Leith was Clarke’s childhood crush, and it becomes obvious early on that Leith has also been down bad for Clarke, for years!

This story provides a great balance of humor, heart, steam, all the cozy vibes, and some emotional depth as we follow Clarke’s mental health journey.

Highly recommend for fans of:

🍂 Review - THE COZY NOOK BOOKSHOP 🍂

Author - Jeannie Chin

Pub Date - 8/25/2026

If you’re looking for books with all the cozy fall vibes and a little spice to add to your TBR this season, you’re going to want to check out Jeannie Chin’s latest, The Cozy Nook Bookshop, book one in the Heart’s Hope Crossing series.

I was drawn into this story right away by how sympathetic a character Emma is. Her life has basically blown up around her so she decides to make a huge change and moves to a tiny town in Vermont where she will manage a small bookshop and live in the apartment above it. Her sense of determination was admirable.

I love a bookish setting, so this book was already my vibe, but I’m also a sucker for a grumpy sunshine romance. When Emma is cheerfully starting her new life and literally collides with Hunter, the gruff but sexy park ranger, right outside of her shop, it felt like kismet. And I wasn’t the only one who thought so. According to town lore, the exact spot where Emma and Hunter run into each other is a spot where it’s said that strangers who meet there are fated to be together. It cracked me up that the townsfolk immediately set out to try to make it happen with these two. This book definitely has its fair share of meddlesome matchmakers!

Emma and Hunter try to fight the idea that they’re fated to be together, Emma because she’s just out of a relationship & not ready for another, & Hunter because his past is complicated when it comes to love. Even so, they start to give in pretty quickly. At first maybe a little too quickly, a little instalove-ish, but I bought into them as a couple fairly easily because they have great chemistry. I enjoyed them getting to know each other better, especially their hiking adventures, and I loved seeing Hunter’s softer side come out.

The audiobook was narrated by Katharine Chin & it was a cozy, bingeable listen..She does a great job of bringing these characters to life & of making me feel like I’m right there in small town Vermont watching the action unfold.

🎭 Review - WELL VERSED 🎭

Author -Jen DeLuca

Pub Date - 9/22/2026

Do you have a book or series that’s a total comfort read for you? For me, one of those series is Jen DeLuca’s Well Met series, so getting a fifth book was a dream come true for me. I was so happy to return to the cozy world of the Willow Creek Renaissance Faire and to reunite with this group of characters who have come to feel like old friends.

This installment also intrigued me because it revisits Caitlyn, who we met early in the series when she was just a teenager and the Red Faire was her whole life. Caitlyn is in her mid 20s now and has recently returned home to regroup and reset after losing her job in New York. Caitlyn’s return home is bittersweet because she fell out of love with the Red Faire and Shakespeare years ago when Alex the Sword Bro broke her heart and tainted all of it for her. The Red Faire gang convinces her to participate in the Faire one more time, and she immediately comes face to face with Alex, causing all of those old feelings to bubble to the surface.

I remember Caitlyn’s passion for the Faire vividly so I immediately wanted to dislike Alex for ruining it for her. He grew on me quickly though because he’s actually a sweetheart, and I was soon rooting for Caitlyn and Alex to work through what happened all those years ago and to get to know each other now as more mature adults.

Every book in this series has been such a fun and heartwarming experience, and always makes me want to go to the Faire, and Well Versed is no exception. Huzzah!

✨ Review - IF NOT YOU ✨

Author - Ellen O’Clover

Pub Date - 9/15/26

Mattie French may work as a copywriter for one of Chicago top advertising agencies, but she still can’t forget how her archnemesis, Campbell Porter, beat her out for a position at the agency they both interned with five years ago. The main reason she can’t forget is because she can’t escape Campbell no matter where she goes to network, what awards her agency is up for, or even when she’s just trying to catch a train home. He’s everywhere and he always beat her, making her not only loathe him but also doubt herself. Needless to say, it’s Mattie’s worst nightmare when her agency and Campbell’s are both invited to vy for a huge new client that owns luxury resorts and the contest involves both teams staying at the resorts together.

I went into this book wanting to hate Campbell based on the way Mattie reacts to him and relives memories of him taunting her when they were interns together. What I quickly realized, however, is that Campbell is a total golden retriever type who has been in love with Mattie for ages. He also thinks she’s incredibly talented and he admires her passion for her job because even though he’s good at it, he’s not passionate about it at all and in fact, dreams of an entirely different career.

I had such a good time following these characters as they try to enjoy the resort’s luxurious amenities, work on their presentations, and deal with the tension that absolutely crackles between them. There’s so much angst and pining, and insane amounts of chemistry between Campbell and Mattie no matter how hard they try to fight it. I love the forced proximity trope, and O’Clover uses it so well here, as being forced to interact with Campbell finally opens Mattie’s eyes to some truths she never realized about him, which allows her to finally let her guard down around him.

A fun read and an emotional one, I really enjoyed it!

Raise your hand if your book buying addiction began with the scholastic book fair when you were a kid. 🙋‍♀️

Some of my most vivid childhood memories are of getting those book fair order forms and circling all of the books I wanted. Bless my mom for never telling me no.

What were some of your favorite books when you were a kid?

I loved all of Judy Blume and Beverly Cleary’s books, and I was also a big fan of the Little House on the Prairie books, followed by Nancy Drew and Sweet Valley High as I got a little older.

✨ Review - GRIM TIDINGS ✨

Author - B.K. Borison

Pub Date - 9/15/2026

(Physical copy purchased by me)

OMG, this book! B.K. Borison has really outdone herself with Grim Tidings, her latest paranormal romance. It’s one of my favorite romance reads of the year so far and I can’t stop thinking about it!

Darcy is a grim reaper who is lonely and who has grown weary of collecting souls. When her next assignment takes her to a bar in Maryland, she begins flirting with Gabriel, the sexy bartender. Their makeup session comes to a screeching halt when Gabriel realizes she is Death Incarnate and wants to know whose soul she has come for. How does he know what Darcy is? Because he’s a guardian angel and is tasked with protecting all of the humans in his corner of the world.

I adore a good enemies to lovers story and this is definitely one of the more unique ones I’ve read. The chemistry between Darcy and Gabriel is intense, even as he swears that he hates everything she stands for. Gabriel’s harsh words really get to Darcy. She doesn’t want to be seen as a villain. Instead, she wants something different for herself. She starts bending rules and looking for loopholes, which is how she ends up with Tater Tot, the undead dog, as her companion on Earth.

Darcy is such an easy character to root for. I deeply sympathized with her situation and wanted her to find a different path for herself. I was also rooting for Gabriel to really see Darcy and realize that she’s not the villain he originally wants to paint her as. I was obsessed with the two of them as they spend more and more time together, Gabriel helping Darcy check items off of her human experiences bucket list in exchange for clues about whose soul she has come to take.

I honestly just loved everything about this one - the characters, the cozy yet haunting setting, the gorgeous writing, the unique premise. Everything was just perfect, and I’m going to be thinking about Darcy and Gabriel for a long time to come.

🍁 REVIEW - FALLING FOR PEACHTREE BLUFF 🍁

Author - Kristy Woodson Harvey

Pub Date - 9/15/2026

My love for Kristy Woodson Harvey’s books started with the Peachtree Bluff series, so I’m beyond excited that Kristy has taken us back to Peachtree Bluff for a fifth time. I adore the Murphy family and the charming NC coastal town setting, so it truly felt like coming home as soon as I started reading.

The dynamic between the Murphy sisters and their mom Ansley is one of my favorites in contemporary fiction. These are all strong women who are fiercely loyal to one another. If you mess with one Murphy woman, you mess with them all. These women love fiercely, they live life to the fullest, and while yes, sometimes they fight as all families do, they always forgive. I think this book works fine as a standalone, but having read the other books and seen this dynamic play out over and over just added so much more to my experience this time around.

I enjoyed the focus on Caroline in this book too. She’s normally the one they all look to when their own lives are a mess because she’s the “fixer”, but this time, it’s her life that has taken a messy turn when her soon-to-be ex husband suddenly decides he doesn’t want to let her go. Does the “fixer”keep helping everyone else with their drama or does she finally focus on herself for a change?

Another fun element in this one is that it’s one of Caroline’s nieces that has some drama that she’s trying to deal with. It was fun to see more from the next generation of Murphy women.

I read this with my eyes and ears and thought the multi-cast narration was phenomenal. The actors perfectly captured the warmth, the heart, and the humor that always infuses KWH’s writing and they made me feel like I was right there in Peachtree Bluff watching the family drama unfold.

🤠 Review - BLUE JEAN SUMMER 🤠

Author - Maggie Gates

Pub Date - 9/15/2026

Childhood friends to lovers is one of those tropes that gets me every time and Maggie Gates does it so well in her latest cowboy romance, Blue Jean Summer, the first in the Wilder Estates series.

I love this author’s writing anyway, but having this story set in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, where my family has property and where I’ve spent so much time, just made it all the more special for me.

Hayes is a sexy, swoony cowboy who is trying to save his beloved grandfather’s estate from Lewis. If you enjoy having characters that you love to hate, Lewis is your guy. He’s the absolute worst in every way. The terms of the grandfather’s will state that Hayes inherits the estate, as long as he has a wife within a reasonable period of time. If he doesn’t marry, he forfeits the estate to slimy Lewis. Catherine may be the reigning Miss Virginia and the picture of graceful elegance, but she grew up spending many hours on this farm and she loves it as much as he does. It’s not a big stretch for her to help him out by marrying him so he can keep the land.

I absolutely loved Hayes and Catherine together. They have such incredible chemistry and are both so invested in their arrangement. It might start off as a marriage of convenience, but long-buried feelings of mutual attraction start to bubble to the surface until it’s impossible for them to keep their arrangement professional. I loved how tuned in to each other they were, both when it came to fooling Lewis but also when they were each struggling in anyway. I loved their secret meetups in the hayloft, which was a callback to their childhood.

This story also had some fantastic secondary characters, and I’m really hoping we’ll see more of them in future books. Except Lewis of course. He needs to go far away, haha!

🩷 REVIEW - THANK YOU FOR REMEMBERING 🩷

Author - Emily Harding

Pub Date - 9/15/2026

Marnie wakes up in a Boston hospital with a traumatic brain injury. Her last memory is actually packing to make the move to Boston with her boyfriend, Matt. What Marnie learns is that not only has she been in Boston for a year, she and Matt have been broken up for months.

Marnie is released from the hospital with her purse, a phone she can’t even remember the PIN to unlock, and a key to an apartment she doesn’t remember. Her neighbor Ben is extremely sympathetic to her situation and offers to help in any way he can. With Ben’s help, Marnie starts to search her apartment for clues to help fill in the missing gaps in her memory. The more time she spends with Ben, however, the future starts to feel more important than the past.

I always love a journey of self-discovery and this story truly is exactly that since Marnie is having to rediscover who she has been for the past year.

I also loved the mystery element as she plays amateur detective with a box of trinkets and mementos that were apparently important to her Boston life. I felt bad for her for all that she has lost, but at the same time, I was just so impressed by her determination to figure everything out. She’s a very easy character to root for, especially when it comes to romance because it was easy to tell right away that Ben really carried about Marnie and was the kind of guy she deserved.

I loved the unique story, the beautiful writing, and the humorous bits that were sprinkled throughout - Marnie trying to evict, but not kill, a rodent that lives in her apartment, as well as Marnie trying to get one of her other neighbors to take his ABBA-obsession down a notch. So amusing!

This was such a bingeable read and listen. I highly recommend the audiobook. It runs 8 hrs, 31 mins and Allyson Ryan does a fabulous job narrating and bringing Marnie and Ben to life.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫
