Can’t Wait Wednesday – A SPINDLE SPLINTERED by Alix E. Harrow
“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, which encourages fellow bloggers to spotlight upcoming releases that we’re excited about. It is a meme that I have loved participating in since I first started blogging, but as Jill is no longer actively posting, from now on I’ll be linking to Can’t Wait Wednesday, hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings, which is a spinoff of the original WoW meme.

My selection for this week is A SPINDLE SPLINTERED by Alix E. Harrow. This book caught my eye for a few reasons: 1) that gorgeous cover, 2) it’s a feminist retelling of Sleeping Beauty, which sounds pretty cool and I’m always up for a good retelling, 3) it’s written by one of my new favorite authors, Alix E. Harrow (The Ten Thousand Doors of January, The Once & Future Witches), and 4) It’s blurbed by another favorite author of mine, Katherine Arden (The Winternight Trilogy).
A SPINDLE SPLINTERED by Alix E. Harrow
Publication Date: October 5, 2021 by Tordotcom
From Goodreads:
“Sleeping Beauty is the worst fairy tale, pretty much any way you slice it. It’s aimless and amoral and chauvinist as shit. Even among the other nerds who majored in folklore, Sleeping Beauty is nobody’s favorite. The romantic girls like Beauty and the Beast; basic girls like Cinderella; goth girls like Snow White. Only the dying girls like Sleeping Beauty.”
It’s Zinnia Gray’s twenty-first birthday, which is an extra-special occasion, because it’s the last she’ll ever have. When she was young, an industrial accident left Zinnia with a rare condition. Not much is known about her illness, but the main fact for Zinnia is that no one who has it has lived to twenty-two.
Her best friend is intent on making Zin’s last birthday special with a full sleeping beauty experience, complete with a tower and a spinning wheel. But when Zinnia pricks her finger, she founds herself cast into another world, with another sleeping beauty, just as desperate to escape her fate.

Oh my, I am loving this take on the Sleeping Beauty story! It’s hard to make a fairytale retelling sound original, but this certainly does the trick!
I agree! 🙂
Oh, that is a really great blurb! Definitely adding this to my TBR!
Hope you enjoy it!
Yaaassss! Can’t wait for this, although I do wish it was a full length novel😁
Same!
Wow! This cover is gorgeous! And the book sounds really interesting too! I don’t think I’ve ever read a Sleeping Beauty retelling?
I don’t think I have either honestly so I’m really intrigued by this one.
I love the sound of this one! It’s a different take on a fairytale retelling and I love that. Happy reading!

HOW HAD I NOT HEARD OF THIS ONE??
I just read about it last week in a newsletter from tordotcom. I couldn’t believe it was my first time hearing of it either.
Yes please! But like Tammy, I wish it was going to be longer. Pretty cover too.
Same here.
