Mini Reviews – The Co-op, Perfect Fit, & Holding the Reins

December 16, 2024/2 Comments/by Suzanne

Hey everyone!  I just finished up my last week of work for the year, so now in addition to getting ready for the upcoming holidays, I’m spending my downtime getting caught up some reviews that I’ve gotten behind on writing.  Today I’m sharing three recent romance releases that I really enjoyed, including a debut from Paisley Hope.  Last year Elsie Silver started me in my cowboy romance era with her Chestnut Springs series and I think Paisley Hope is going to keep me firmly in it with her new series!

Mini Reviews – The Co-op, Perfect Fit, & Holding the ReinsThe Co-op Goodreads

Author: Tarah DeWitt

Publication Date: November 12, 2024 (First published, October 20, 2022)

Publisher: St Martin’s Griffin

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary e-copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley.  All opinions are my own.

LaRynn and Deacon haven’t seen each other since a decade before when they were teenagers in the midst of a summer fling and Deacon broke LaRynn’s heart.  Now they have been awkwardly reunited as co-owners of their married grandmothers’ home.  The home is completely run-down and in need of major renovations before they can even begin to sell it. While Deacon has the construction skills to complete the renovations, he has no money to do so, and while LaRynn has a trust fund with plenty of money, the only way she can gain access to the funds is to get married.  LaRynn and Deacon agree to a marriage of convenience in order to gain access to the money they need and thus start working on the house together, living in the house while they work.

I do love a good second chance romance, and in this one, I love how DeWitt uses the backdrop of working on this renovation project as a way for LaRynn and Deacon 1) to realize they really do still have feelings for one another that are way more than just a teen summer fling, and 2) to really confront what happened in the past and what is happening between them now.  There were both some emotional moments as they explored their past, as well as some more rom-com worthy moments courtesy of the home renovation scenes.

This was my second read from DeWitt this year and I look forward to reading more from her! 4 STARS

Mini Reviews – The Co-op, Perfect Fit, & Holding the ReinsPerfect Fit Goodreads

Author: Clare Gilmore

Publication Date: October 29, 2024

Publisher: St Martin’s Griffin

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary e-copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley.  All opinions are my own.

Josie has spent most of her twenties building her unique fashion brand Revenant, headquartered in Austin, Texas.  When her biggest investor tells her she needs to hire a consultant, the last person she expects to end up working with is Will Grant, her ex best friend’s brother and the guy she mistakenly shared a kiss with one night nine years earlier. Will and Josie are both much too busy focusing on their careers and have no interest in romance, especially with one another, and yet, somehow they still can’t seem to stay away from one another.

What I really enjoyed about this one is that both characters and their day-to-day struggles felt very relatable, particular the work-life balance struggles and the fear of burnout if you don’t slow down and take care of yourself.  I also just really enjoyed the chemistry between Will and Josie. They were fun and flirty together, but also just really supportive of one another and whatever choices  they made with respect to their lives, careers, etc. Not to sound cheesy, but they really were a perfect fit.  4 STARS

Mini Reviews – The Co-op, Perfect Fit, & Holding the ReinsHolding the Reins (Silver Pines Ranch, #1) Goodreads

Author: Paisley Hope

Publication Date: October 22, 2024

Publisher: Dell Romance

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary e-copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley.  All opinions are my own.

CeCe Ashby has returned to her family’s ranch in Laurel Creek, Kentucky, after breaking her engagement and leaving what had become a toxic relationship.  Almost as soon as she returns, she runs into her brother’s sexy best friend, Nash Carter, the newly retired superstar of the Dallas Stars hockey team.  Nash is a hometown hero, local business owner, and a notorious bachelor.  He and CeCe immediately hit it off and when he learns she is back for good and in need of a job, he hires her.

This was a super spicy western romance! It was a lot of fun watching CeCe and Nash get to know each other as something more than the brother’s best friend dynamic that they had both grown up with, and oh boy, the spice was definitely spicing the more they got reacquainted!  I also loved the small town vibes, the secret dating, and of course, that there’s my favorite trope of all, found family, and that it’s so well done.

Holding the Reins is the first installment in the Silver Pines Ranch series and it’s Paisley Hope’s debut.  I look forward to reading more from her. 4 STARS

🏁 Review - RIDE WITH ME 🏁

Author - Simone Soltani

Pub Date - 5/20/25

Ride with Me is the second book in Simone Soltani’s Lights Out series, and it’s a steamy Formula 1 romance that features one of my favorite tropes, a marriage of convenience. This was my first time reading a Formula 1 romance so I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect going in since I’m not really into racing, but I ate this up. It was such a fun read!

Due to some unfortunate events that have taken place in their own lives recently, neither Stella nor Thomas have much interest in attending their friends’ combined bachelorette-stag party in Vegas and only attend out of obligation. When they meet one another and feel an instant sense of attraction, they drunkenly act on it and because it’s Vegas, you guessed, they end up married. After their initial panic, they both realize that there are ways this marriage could actually be helpful to both of their careers and they come to a mutually beneficial agreement.

I really enjoyed this story! It took me a few chapters to really settle into the story, but once Stella and Thomas start flirting, I was hooked because their banter was just so good. I also liked that there are enough detailed race scenes to give me a taste of F1 racing, while the rest of the story focuses on Stella and Thomas and their fabulous chemistry as they pretend to be husband and wife. They have such a good time together, including some sweet, flirty moments while Stella is baking test batches of desserts for her bakery and Thomas is her taste tester. So cute!

I also just love how, whether they even realize it or not, they grow to care about one another quickly and become very protective of one another. Stella tries the hardest of the two of them to keep to the terms of their agreement because she has been burned in the past, so it’s a slow burn, but it’s a delicious slow burn with lots of tension, and Soltani makes it so worth the wait!

If you like sports romance, marriage of convenience, and forced proximity, definitely give this one a try!

✨ Review: LEFT OF FOREVER ✨

Author: Tarah DeWitt

Pub Date: 5/20/25

Tarah DeWitt is one of my go-to romance authors, and Left of Forever is my favorite book from her yet! Left of Forever is the second novel in DeWitt’s Spunes, Oregon series and it’s an emotional second chance romance that features Ellis and Wren, a couple we met in Savor It, the first novel in the series.

Wren and Ellis were once childhood sweethearts who had a baby boy named Sam and built a life together. It seemed like they were truly made for one another until things suddenly fell apart and ended in divorce. All of the old feelings are still there though, and both Wren and Ellis know it, so when it’s time to take Sam to college in California, Ellis suggests that he and Wren take the opportunity and road trip back up the California coast to Spunes and try to give their relationship a second chance. Wren is hesitant at first, but eventually agrees.

I honestly just adored everything about this book! I was already so invested in Wren and Ellis, having remembered them from the first book, and I loved that they were both willing to fight for their relationship and to really communicate, even when it means facing all of the pain of the past and being completely vulnerable with one another. I love how Dewitt writes her characters. Both Wren and Ellis were so fully fleshed out that I felt like I knew them and was on the emotional roller coaster with them, shedding tears along the way.

This was just such a beautiful read and also a beautiful listen! Megan Wicks and Connor Crais are just perfection as Wren and Ellis, and they especially excelled in those more vulnerable and emotional scenes.

🌴 Review - NOT SAFE FOR WORK 🌴

Author - Nisha J. Tuli

Pub Date - 5/20/25

Ever since she joined WMC Purcell, Trishara Malik has dreamed of becoming the first woman of color to smash the glass ceiling there, but instead, her dreams keep getting smashed by white privilege, or in the most recent case, nepotism, when the boss’s son and her nemesis, Rafe Gallagher, snags what should have easily been her promotion. When we meet Trishara, she is on the verge of burnout and thinking of leaving the firm until she is unexpectedly chosen to attend the corporate leadership retreat in Hawaii and compete for a spot in the executive training program. The only downside is that Rafe of course is chosen to go with her.

I love an underdog character so I was hardcore rooting for Trishara at this retreat in terms of her career so I liked that we actually got to see her in action there. She’s smart and a talented engineer, and it’s well past time she got her time to shine. I really liked Rafe too though, and from the start, felt there was more to him than meets the eye, particularly when it came to his feelings for Trishara. I alway enjoy when forced proximity acts as a catalyst for characters to learn more about one another, so I was excited when a mix-up at the retreat forces the two of them to stay in the honeymoon suite together. Trishara has always thought Rafe was hot, even when she hated him, so what would happen if she realizes he wasn’t so bad after all?

I thought this was a fun read and a quick one. There’s lots of fun banter, tension, and plenty of chemistry between the main characters to keep things interesting. I was never bored even though the romance itself is a slow burn. It’s worth the wait though, particularly if you enjoy a bit of steam in your romance reads.

I did an immersive read with the e-arc and ALC and really enjoyed Soneela Nankani’s narration. She does a wonderful job with all of the characters, but I especially enjoyed her spirited portrayal of Trishara.

🔥 Review - REBEL IN THE DEEP 🔥

Author - Katee Robert

Pub Date - 5/20/25

Rebel in the Deep is the final installment in Katee Robert’s Crimson Sails fantasy trilogy and I thought it was a really solid conclusion to the series.

I would say this one felt more action-packed than the first two books, which makes sense as the rebellion has to come to a head, and I always enjoy an action-packed read so this was right up my alley. It was also great fun to see the main characters from the first two books again.

I also really enjoyed the relationships of the main characters in this book. Siobhan, the rebel leader who has been in hiding for years, but who has emerged to save her lover, Lord Bastian, who has been captured and charged with treason. Siobhan needs help so she seeks the assistance of another character we’ve met before, Nox, quartermaster for the rebellion, and also Lord Bastian’s ex. I love that this mission connects Nox and Siobhan, and that once Bastian is rescued and the three of them have to flee, it finally forces Nox and Bastian to face the pain of their past relationship and it also gives the three of them the opportunity to explore a new connection that they all feel between them. I just really appreciated the dynamic between these three characters and the lengths they were willing to go to for one another once they realized how deep their connection was.

The ending is also quite satisfying, just watching how much these characters have grown, and seeing them rise to the occasion. I really appreciated the journey Robert creates for these characters.

I did an immersive read of the physical book and the audio and was impressed with the narration of Nathaniel Priestly, Zura Johnson, and Mx. Nicky Endres, especially when it came to the emotional moments in the story. Just wonderful!

👻 Review: WE LIVE HERE NOW 👻

Author: Sarah Pinborough

Pub Date: 5/20/25

I always say I’m a chicken who doesn’t read scary books. Well, that’s not exactly true. I do like atmospheric, suspenseful, twisty thrillers with Gothic vibes and hints of the supernatural, and We Live Here Now is exactly that.

The story follows Emily and her husband Freddie who have just moved into Larkin Lodge, a grand old house in the English countryside, while Emily is recuperating from a near fatal accident. Almost as soon as they move in, Emily feels that something is off with the house. She starts to see and hear strange things, like fires going out on their own, floorboards creaking, books falling from shelves.

I was hooked immediately because these things are only happening when Emily is alone, so is the house actually haunted or is it in her head, as she still dealing with post-sepsis issues. She is convinced someone was murdered in the house and is obsessed with uncovering the truth. I flew through the book because I was so invested in learning if the house was actually haunted.

I also enjoyed the way the author wove domestic drama into the story and presented it in a dual POV. Emily and Freddie’s marriage is not doing well, and it was fascinating to get their inner thoughts vs. how they actually spoke to one another. I can’t say I really liked either character, which is usually a problem for me, but Pinborough wrote them in such a way that I was still captivated and wanted to see how everything would play out.

This was my first time reading this author and in addition to enjoying how she wrote these characters, I also loved the atmospheric quality of her writing and, as a big Poe fan, I loved that this had major Poe vibes.

I read this one with my eyes and ears and thoroughly enjoyed the narration of Helen Baxendale, Jamie Glover, and the author. They do a great job of bringing these characters to life, while also capturing all of the story’s spooky vibes. It was such an entertaining listen!

🌺 Review: THE LOVE HATERS 🌺

Author: Katherine Center

Pub Date: 5/20/25

I always know going into Katherine Center’s books that I’m going to finish with a full heart and a smile on my face, and The Love Haters absolutely delivers!

When we meet the main character, Katie Vaughn, she’s not in a great place. Her video production job is in danger and she has recently had a devastating public breakup with her famous boyfriend. The public made it their business to criticize everything about Katie, particularly her appearance, which was not good for her mental health. She desperately needs a change, and she needs to keep her job, so she takes an assignment in Key West, where she will shadow, then produce a documentary on Tom “Hutch” Hutcheson, a popular Coast Guard rescue swimmer. Katie has no idea how life changing this assignment will be!

I loved all of the romcom vibes as Katie and Hutch get to know one another. The romance is a classic grumpy-sunshine, forced proximity that starts with Hutch and Katie bonding while he gives her swimming lessons. There are plenty of hilarious antics and witty banter that give way to wonderful chemistry and that had me rooting for these two pretty quickly.

What had me maybe even more invested than the romance though was Katie’s overall growth and her journey to learn to love herself again. I thought her struggles were written realistically, and I loved watching her tackle her fears and insecurities. It takes her a while to get to a better place, but she just really seems to find herself while in Key West and she also makes so many wonderful friends along the way.

If you like fun side characters, this book has a great cast, including a fabulous rescue Great Dane named George Bailey who will steal your heart.

I tandem read the physical and audio copies and fell in love with Patti Murin’s narration. No surprise there as she is always outstanding when it comes to capturing both the humor and the more emotional moments of a story.

❓QOTD - What are you reading this week?
✨25 in 2025 Read #10 - CONSIDER ME by Becka Mack ✨25 in 2025 Read #10 - CONSIDER ME by Becka Mack ✨

Hey book friends! I hope you’re all having a great weekend. It has been a busy one here with my son’s high school graduation taking place yesterday. After all that excitement, we’re all having a lazy day today.

I have so many reviews I need to write for upcoming releases but my brain isn’t ready for those so I’m going to catch up on the last 25 in 2025 review I’m behind on instead.

I’ve been wanting to read Becka Mack’s books for a while now. I finally picked up Consider Me, the first book in Mack’s Playing for Keeps series, last month.

It’s a super spicy hockey romance, and Carter, the MMC is a fun character. When we first meet him, he’s this obnoxious, arrogant f*ck boy who doesn’t do relationships, but all of that changes when Olivia walks into his life. Olivia is a high school teacher who, although she finds him physically attractive, has no interest in Carter or his f*ckboy ways.

Carter and his journey was really the highlight of this story for me. Before Olivia, Carter had never met anyone he wanted to give his heart to and now that he has, he’s ready to prove that he’s so much more than the badboy reputation he has been saddled with. We learn he’s really this charming, funny, soft, golden retriever character who loves Disney movies, Oreo cookies, and oh boy, the way he interacts with his family and takes care of animals is positively swoon-worthy!

I also really enjoyed the way Mack has Carter and Olivia’s relationship evolve. It felt realistic because it’s messy at times and mistakes are definitely made along the way while Carter is trying to figure things out and while Olivia is trying to work through some insecurities she has been experiencing, but there are also plenty of sweet moments when they get it right and realize how good they are together.

At almost 500 pages, the book was a little longer than I like my romance reads to be, but that’s just a me thing. Overall, my first time reading a Becka Mack novel was a great experience and I look forward to continuing this series.

❓QOTD - Favorite Disney movie?

AOTD - Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King
🎵 Review - JUST BUSINESS 🎵 Author - Jenny C 🎵 Review - JUST BUSINESS 🎵

Author - Jenny Cross

Pub Date - 5/16/25

Just Business is the first book in the Singing River Sound series and it’s also the debut romance novel from @authorjennycross. Happy pub day & thanks for the #gifted review copy!

Just Business follows country music star Austin James, who is clearly spiraling and putting his career at risk when we first meet him. While it’s unclear why, he’s obviously hurting and using alcohol to cope. In an effort to get him back on track, he is sent to a small town in Alabama to work on music at a small music studio. It is here that he finds refuge, not just in making music that feels more like himself than anything he has done for his record label, but also in the fiercely independent studio owner, Penny Miller, who he feels a connection to as soon as they start to make music together.

I loved the chemistry between Austin and Penny. Sparks fly when they first meet, but they also have a bit of a kindred spirit thing going on. They’re both working through pain and heartache and basically just going through the motions in a lot of ways. The more they work together, the more they connect and truly just give each other strength support. I especially loved that even though Austin went to Penny’s studio on what was supposed to be a healing journey for himself, he ends up really inspiring a journey of healing for Penny as well.

I also appreciated every aspect of their relationship and how healthy it was. It’s a slow burn in terms of their physical connection & the spice, but it’s well worth the wait because the build of their emotional connection is so well done. While Austin & Penny’s relationship is healthy with very little drama, the book itself does touch on some heavy topics such as alcoholism, domestic abuse, & grief after the death of loved ones. Those topics are handled with great care by the author as they are presented during each character’s healing arc.

Just Business is a heartwarming romance with characters who were easy to root for, a small town setting I really enjoyed, & a twist at the end that has me eager to see what happens next!

🎬 Review - DREAM ON, RAMONA RILEY 🎬

Author - Ashley Herring Blake

Pub Date - 5/13/25

I love Ashley Herring Blake’s sapphic romances so I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy of her latest, Dream On, Ramona Riley, which is a spicy, small town, second chance romance, and the first book in her new Clover Lake series.

Once upon a time Ramona dreamed of being a costume designer in Hollywood. She even went to school for it, but her dream came to an end when her dad’s accident forced her home to Clover Lake to take care of her little sister. When a big budget film comes to shoot in Clover Lake, it brings second chances Ramona’s way, both professionally and personally, when it turns out the film’s star is none other than Dylan Monroe, a young woman Ramona shared her first kiss with years ago.

I enjoyed this story! Ashley Herring Blake is so good at writing messy, flawed characters and Dylan, in particular, fits that bill. She is trying so hard to shed her wild child image and being taken seriously as an actress. This film is a fresh start or second chance for her as well. To prepare for the role, she asks to shadow a waitress at the local cafe, which is how she and Ramona reconnect. At first Dylan is so frazzled, trying to handle the pressure she has put on herself with this new film, that she doesn’t seem to even recognize Ramona but once she does, it’s clear that they still have the same incredible chemistry they had all those years ago. They both have issues they need to work through before they could possibly be a couple, but it’s very easy to root for them to figure things out and I loved seeing the flashbacks from when they first met.

Gail Shalan narrates the audiobook and I thought she did a lovely job of capturing the chemistry, both past and present, between Ramona and Dylan.

🩵Review - CAN’T GET ENOUGH 🩵

Author - Kennedy Ryan

Pub Date - 5/13/25

I didn’t want the Skyland series to end so I’ve been avoiding reading my arc. I’ve been dying for Hendrix’s story though so I finally dove into it last week. I tried to read slowly so I could savor it, but of course ended up devouring it in a couple of sittings because Kennedy Ryan’s writing is amazing!

Hendrix is a fabulous character. She’s a smart, determined businesswoman trying to achieve her goals in the entertainment industry. As we’ve met in the earlier books, she has the most incredibly supportive friend group and a loving family, but it’s a juggling act to make it all work, especially since she is also trying to care for her mom who has recently been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Romance is not on her radar, as she has no time for men, and has yet to find one that is worth trying to make any time for. That is, until she meets Maverick at a party.

Maverick is initially drawn to Hendrix because she’s the life of the party, but one conversation with her, and he feels a connection to her like he has felt with no one else. Hendrix feels the connection too, and tries to fight it because of who he is and who he used to be in a relationship with because it could hamper her career goals, but how often in life does someone come along who sees, understands, and appreciates you so completely? I was sold on Maverick and Hendrix as a couple from their first meeting, but knew without a doubt that he was perfect for her after the scene when he meets Hendrix’s mom. IYKYK.

This was the first Skyland book I listened to on audio and I loved the narration of Wesleigh Siobhan and Jakobi Diem. They were just so perfect as Hendrix and Maverick.

What I love about Kennedy Ryan’s books is that they are not just beautiful, sensual romances, but they are also poignant, emotional stories that deeply resonate — the friendships, sense of community & sisterhood in this series is just so heartwarming & uplifting.

The ending was also perfect & had me shedding happy tears.

💍 Review: JILTED 💍

Author: Vi Keeland

Pub Date - 5/6/25

Sloane has always loved weddings, so much so that she chose a career working for Brides magazine. Her own fiance leaving her at the altar has put her off weddings though, which is inconvenient considering she gets recruited to be in the bridal party of the wedding she is covering when we first meet her. She also gets paired with the most maddening, sexy, and charming groomsman she has ever met, Wilder Hayes, the son of the owner of Brides magazine. Sparks fly, and bickering before and during the wedding soon leads to making out in a coat closet, which becomes even more awkward when her boss points out that nearly the entire bridal party is getting married this season and how fun would it be to turn this into a series and have Sloane cover all the weddings, which means she and Wilder will be seeing a lot of each other.

This was such a fun romcom! It’s definitely a slow burn as both Sloane and, as we learn, Wilder, have both been burned by love and have to take that healing journey before they’re ready for a second chance at love. I do love a good “he falls first” story though and it’s obvious Wilder falls hard for Sloane and that as afraid as he is, he keeps putting himself out there, first as a friend, then as more when they’re both ready.

I really enjoyed these characters. At first Wilder comes across as arrogant, but we soon see he’s really a sweet guy who loves to take care of those he loves. Sloane is also easy to root for. She’s smart, funny, and she deserves so much better than what her loser fiance did to her, and Wilder is just perfect for her, which makes that slow burn so worth the wait.

I enjoyed Vi Keeland’s writing, character development, and the way this story unfolded, & found it easy to follow on audiobook. Andi Arndt and Aiden Snow were fantastic as Sloane & Wilder, perfectly capturing their chemistry and making Keeland’s banter just sparkle.

Happy Saturday book friends! I hope your weekend is off to a good start. The weather is gorgeous here today so I’m hoping to get outside soon and enjoy it, but I remembered that I have yet to post my list of May hopefuls so I wanted to do that before it just completely leaves my brain again.

🩵 Review - KISS ME, MAYBE 🩵

Author - Gabriella Gamez

Pub Date - 5/6/25

I couldn’t resist this book as soon as I saw the main character was a librarian!

Kiss Me, Maybe follows Angela, a 20-something librarian who has never been kissed. She has also recently come out as asexual but is still exploring what exactly it means to be ace and is doing so on her Tik Tok. When her videos go viral and she starts to gain a big following, Angela decides it would be fun to use the opportunity to get her first kiss, and with the help of Krystal, a sexy bartender friend she has had a crush on forever, she creates a scavenger hunt that will take place during the city’s annual Fiesta celebration, the winner of which will get to kiss her. Krystal has always said that romantic love wasn’t her thing, but will working in close proximity with Angela change that?

I wasn’t entirely sold on the idea of the scavenger hunt itself but I loved both Angela and Krystal & enjoyed watching their friends-to-lovers relationship blossom. I also really liked how Angela was able to use social media as part of her journey of self discovery and that she was also able to use it to build a community and meet so many others in the LGBTQ+ community. The author also does a great job of pointing out the flipside of putting yourself out there on social media. While you may attract a wonderful community, there’s always the risk of trolls and of others who know you finding your account.

I enjoyed this author’s writing, particularly Angela’s inner monologue because she just has so much going on in her head as she’s thinking about her identity & what she wants.

I did an immersive read with the e-arc and ALC and my favorite part about Ruby Corazon’s narration was also Angela’s inner monologue & that range of emotions, from the angst & uncertainty through to a more happy and hopeful state as Angela becomes more confident in who she is and what she wants.

Overall, a fun, romantic, thoughtful read.

🐘 Review - HOME OF THE AMERICAN CIRCUS 🐘 Au 🐘 Review - HOME OF THE AMERICAN CIRCUS 🐘

Author - Allison Larkin

Thanks to @gallerybooks for the #gifted book & @simon.audio for the #gifted audiobook. #partner

Home of the American Circus is a poignant, character driven family drama that really resonated with me. It’s a story about second chances and one woman’s journey of self discovery as she not only faces her past, but looks to mend fractured relationships & find a path forward.

When a medical emergency leaves Freya short on rent, she takes it as a sign it’s time to leave her current life behind and return home to Somers, NY, where she can finally claim the old, dilapidated house she inherited from her estranged parents. Even though Freya’s intent is to lay low once she arrives in her hometown, she quickly finds herself surrounded by childhood friends, old flames, and unfortunately, a few enemies she’s related to that she would rather forget.

She also finds Aubrey, the 15-year old niece she was once very close to, but who she left behind when she previously fled the town. Aubrey has been secretly living in Freya’s abandoned house when she can’t stand being around her own family. As Freya and Aubrey work to make repairs on the old house, Freya also cautiously works to rebuild trust and repair the once beautiful relationship she had with her young niece. There’s a dual timeline that slowly reveals the full story as to what drove Freya away in the first place, and it’s just such a heartbreaking and emotional story with Freya and Aubrey’s relationship illustrating that sometimes the family we choose is more loving and stable than the family we are born into.

I loved Larkin’s writing and the way she drew not just Freya and Aubrey, but all of the characters. From Jam to Shray and everyone in between, they’re all just so unique and wonderful. You couldn’t help but root for them all, especially the ones that rallied around Freya.

I alternated between the physical arc & the audio and thoroughly enjoyed both. Julia Whelan narrates and, as always, is just perfection, especially the way she captures Freya & Aubrey’s relationship.
