Mini Reviews – The Co-op, Perfect Fit, & Holding the Reins

December 16, 2024/2 Comments/by Suzanne

Hey everyone!  I just finished up my last week of work for the year, so now in addition to getting ready for the upcoming holidays, I’m spending my downtime getting caught up some reviews that I’ve gotten behind on writing.  Today I’m sharing three recent romance releases that I really enjoyed, including a debut from Paisley Hope.  Last year Elsie Silver started me in my cowboy romance era with her Chestnut Springs series and I think Paisley Hope is going to keep me firmly in it with her new series!

Mini Reviews – The Co-op, Perfect Fit, & Holding the ReinsThe Co-op Goodreads

Author: Tarah DeWitt

Publication Date: November 12, 2024 (First published, October 20, 2022)

Publisher: St Martin’s Griffin

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary e-copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley.  All opinions are my own.

LaRynn and Deacon haven’t seen each other since a decade before when they were teenagers in the midst of a summer fling and Deacon broke LaRynn’s heart.  Now they have been awkwardly reunited as co-owners of their married grandmothers’ home.  The home is completely run-down and in need of major renovations before they can even begin to sell it. While Deacon has the construction skills to complete the renovations, he has no money to do so, and while LaRynn has a trust fund with plenty of money, the only way she can gain access to the funds is to get married.  LaRynn and Deacon agree to a marriage of convenience in order to gain access to the money they need and thus start working on the house together, living in the house while they work.

I do love a good second chance romance, and in this one, I love how DeWitt uses the backdrop of working on this renovation project as a way for LaRynn and Deacon 1) to realize they really do still have feelings for one another that are way more than just a teen summer fling, and 2) to really confront what happened in the past and what is happening between them now.  There were both some emotional moments as they explored their past, as well as some more rom-com worthy moments courtesy of the home renovation scenes.

This was my second read from DeWitt this year and I look forward to reading more from her! 4 STARS

Mini Reviews – The Co-op, Perfect Fit, & Holding the ReinsPerfect Fit Goodreads

Author: Clare Gilmore

Publication Date: October 29, 2024

Publisher: St Martin’s Griffin

Josie has spent most of her twenties building her unique fashion brand Revenant, headquartered in Austin, Texas.  When her biggest investor tells her she needs to hire a consultant, the last person she expects to end up working with is Will Grant, her ex best friend’s brother and the guy she mistakenly shared a kiss with one night nine years earlier. Will and Josie are both much too busy focusing on their careers and have no interest in romance, especially with one another, and yet, somehow they still can’t seem to stay away from one another.

What I really enjoyed about this one is that both characters and their day-to-day struggles felt very relatable, particular the work-life balance struggles and the fear of burnout if you don’t slow down and take care of yourself.  I also just really enjoyed the chemistry between Will and Josie. They were fun and flirty together, but also just really supportive of one another and whatever choices  they made with respect to their lives, careers, etc. Not to sound cheesy, but they really were a perfect fit.  4 STARS

Mini Reviews – The Co-op, Perfect Fit, & Holding the ReinsHolding the Reins (Silver Pines Ranch, #1) Goodreads

Author: Paisley Hope

Publication Date: October 22, 2024

Publisher: Dell Romance

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary e-copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley.  All opinions are my own.

CeCe Ashby has returned to her family’s ranch in Laurel Creek, Kentucky, after breaking her engagement and leaving what had become a toxic relationship.  Almost as soon as she returns, she runs into her brother’s sexy best friend, Nash Carter, the newly retired superstar of the Dallas Stars hockey team.  Nash is a hometown hero, local business owner, and a notorious bachelor.  He and CeCe immediately hit it off and when he learns she is back for good and in need of a job, he hires her.

This was a super spicy western romance! It was a lot of fun watching CeCe and Nash get to know each other as something more than the brother’s best friend dynamic that they had both grown up with, and oh boy, the spice was definitely spicing the more they got reacquainted!  I also loved the small town vibes, the secret dating, and of course, that there’s my favorite trope of all, found family, and that it’s so well done.

Holding the Reins is the first installment in the Silver Pines Ranch series and it’s Paisley Hope’s debut.  I look forward to reading more from her. 4 STARS

About Me

me

Hi, I'm Suzanne. Proofreader by day, book blogger by night, devourer of books 24/7. My reading tastes: Basically you name it, I probably like it. I read a lot of contemporary and historical, both adult and YA, and I've also been enjoying more and more fantasy lately. Hobbies include: buying and hoarding of books, rambling about books to anyone who will listen, and trying to recommend books to my family and friends whether they are readers or not - because seriously, how can you not love to read books?

🤠 Mini Reviews - REBEL BLUE RANCH series by Lyl 🤠 Mini Reviews - REBEL BLUE RANCH series by Lyla Sage 🤠

Swift and Saddled was one of my 25 in 2025 challenge reads, but I ended up binging the rest of the series. Today I wanted to share my thoughts on these fun, spicy books.

✨Swift and Saddled, # 2 (Pub Date: 3/5/24)

(Book #11 from my 25 in 2025):

Ada is an independent woman who has worked hard to build a successful career for herself in spite of her past failures, including a failed marriage. She trusts no one and has built up walls, but Wes Ryder, a cinnamon roll hero I fell hard for, is just the guy to help her knock those walls back down. He’s her boss at Rebel Blue and no matter how hard they try to keep things professional, it’s hard to fight chemistry as strong as theirs. This one is perfect for fans of workplace romance, forced proximity, & opposites attract. There’s also great mental health rep for depression. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

✨Lost and Lassoed, # 3 (Pub Date: 11/5/24)

I’m an enemies-to-lovers girl, so after watching Gus and Teddy trade verbal barbs in the first two books, I was so ready for their story and it ended up being my favorite of the series. The banter between these two and the evolution of their relationship as they started to see each other in a different light had me eating this book up! I also absolutely adored the father/child relationships in this book. The bond between Gus and his dad was wonderful, and I loved seeing Gus and her daughter bond as well. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

✨Wild and Wrangled, # 4 (Pub Date: 4/15/25)

I love a second chance romance so I was eager to get Cam and Dusty’s story. I do have to admit that even though I still enjoyed it, it was my least favorite and it was mainly because it took me a while to fully embrace Cam. Some of her earlier choices just had me shaking my head, so I was grateful that her character experiences a lot of growth during this book. I did love the chemistry between Cam and Dusty though, and just how devoted Dusty was to her. I also appreciated that the family bonds that have been in every book were so strong here to finish out the series on a heartfelt note. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

🩵Review: SLOW BURN SUMMER 🩵

Author: Josie Silver

Pub Date: 6/10/25

Years ago Kate Elliott left a promising acting career because she was in love. Now, divorced and broke, she reaches out to her former agent. Kate’s agent has passed away, but his son, Charlie Fransciso, has inherited the agency. It’s not a job Charlie wanted, but his own divorce ended his career as a screenwriter so it’s a job.

Charlie’s agency has a project where they are looking for an unknown actor to play the role of ghost author for a romance novel. It’s a beautiful book, sure to be a bestseller, but the author doesn’t want their name or face associated with it. Kate is hesitant because what happens if people find out she’s not the real author, but eventually desperation wins out and she agrees to be the face of the book.

I really enjoyed the chemistry between Kate and Charlie. They try to keep things professional, but the more time they spend together working on the marketing campaign, it’s pretty clear other feelings are starting to creep in.

As the title indicates, their relationship is a slow burn, but I also feel that it takes somewhat of a backseat to Kate’s personal journey. Much of this story focuses on how Kate finds her path forward after divorce, and it’s a journey of healing and self-discovery for her.

This book also had some wonderful side characters, with Kate’s sister, Liv, being at the top of my list. She’s fierce and funny, and everyone needs a sister like Liv in their corner!

I did a tandem read of the e-arc and audiobook, and thought Anna Acton’s narration was so fun. I appreciated the unique accents she was able to provide the various characters and especially enjoyed the chapters where Kate was being interviewed.

Part romcom, part women’s fiction, this one is sure to delight!

🎸Review - NEVER BEEN SHIPPED 🎸

Author - Alicia Thompson

Pub Date - 6/10/25

I think I have a thing for romances that feature musicians because I was eager to read Never Been Shipped as soon as I saw it was centered on the members of a band.

When she and her friends were teens, Micah’s band took off after appearing on a popular TV show, but then Micah decided to go her own way, breaking up the band and rendering them a one-hit wonder. Now, a decade later, they have been invited to perform their hit song on a themed cruise ship. Micah is hesitant but eventually agrees to attend.

Micah gets a surprise when she reunites with her former bandmate and childhood best friend, John, because she feels like she’s suddenly seeing him in a whole new way. John, on the other hand, has always had feelings for Micah. He just never acted on them when they were together before. What will he do now that he has a second chance?

If you’ve read Alicia Thompson’s With Love From Cold World, you’ll recognize John as a secondary character from that book. It was fun to see him again and to get to know him better. He’s such a sweetheart and his friendship with Micah was everything to him growing up because he had a rough childhood. Even though he had feelings for her, he didn’t want to risk losing her if a romantic relationship didn’t work out. I loved that he now had a second chance as an adult since it was clear he still had major feelings for her.

Normally I would eat up the drama between the bandmates as they work through their issues but there wasn’t as much of that as I was expecting, so my favorite part of this story was just watching Micah and John reconnect. It’s a slow burn, but their newly discovered romantic chemistry is amazing, and I loved the tension & slow buildup to the steamier scenes.

🎧Ellie Gossage was the sole audiobook narrator & I thought she did a great job providing unique voices for the characters. It was an enjoyable listening experience.

🔥 Review: KING OF ASHES 🔥

Author: S.A. Cosby

Pub Date: 6/10/25

S.A. Cosby’s latest novel, King of Ashes, is a Godfather-inspired Southern crime thriller and it is phenomenal. I’m a huge fan of Cosby’s thrillers, so this was one of my most anticipated reads of the year, and not only did it not disappoint, but it’s my new favorite from him.

King of Ashes follows Roman Carruthers, who returns to his Virginia hometown when a car accident lands his father in the hospital in a coma. He thinks he’s coming home to help run the family crematorium business, but when he arrives, it becomes clear this was no accident. His younger brother Dante has gotten into serious debt with some gangsters who are now tired of waiting to get their money back.

Roman is a financial advisor and at first he thinks maybe he can use his skills with numbers to get Dante and his family out of trouble, but it quickly becomes clear that it’s going to take so much more than that. Roman is willing to do whatever it takes to protect his family, but at what cost to his own soul?

In addition to Roman trying to save his family from these gangsters, there’s an added layer of mystery, family secrets, and reopened old wounds as his sister Neveah is trying to solve a long-buried mystery as to what happened to their mother who disappeared when they were all teenagers. What happened to her? Was their father responsible?

I love the way Cosby writes and was just completely hooked by this story. The writing is powerful, dark and gritty, yet still beautifully written even when describing the most violent scenes, and Cosby’s characters are flawed and authentic. I also like that there’s a balance between action-packed scenes and more thought-provoking, emotional moments. King of Ashes thoroughly entertained me and gave me a lot to think about.

Adam Lazarre-White narrates the audiobook and I highly recommend this format as he does an incredible job bringing every aspect of this story to life.

💜 Review - SEAS THE DATING COACH 💜 Author - 💜 Review - SEAS THE DATING COACH 💜

Author - Laura Langa

Pub Date - 6/6/25

Thanks to the author for the #gifted review copy.

Synopsis:

Seizing the day is great—but snagging a dating coach is better.

All I wanted was to finally say hi to my longtime crush. Instead, I slipped on a puddle of coffee and landed in the arms of Finn Reynolds—the infuriatingly charming newcomer in town. When I tried again, I got utterly tongue-tied. Now I’m blushing, flustered, and somehow caught in Finn’s ridiculous proposition.

With plans to become our library’s next director, Finn has one major winning over the standoffish locals. If I agree to shift popular opinion in his favor, he’ll become my personal dating coach. I’m more fluent in fictional dukes than real-life flirting, but I’m also ready to step out of my shell.

As we navigate trial dates along the seaside and late-night pep talks, I start to feel more confident—more myself. And the way Finn looks at me? It’s impossible to ignore the sparks between us—or how sizzling those practice kisses are.

But Finn’s hiding a big secret—one that doesn’t stay buried for long. And the truth turns out to be a plot twist I definitely didn’t see coming.

Available on KU!

💜 My Thoughts: 💜

Seas the Dating Coach is the first book in Laura Langa’s new Wilks Beach series. It’s a sweet, small town romance that features a seamstress and a male librarian as the two main characters.

I really enjoyed the chemistry between Finn and Vivian. Even though she finds him almost too charming for his own good when she first meets him, Vivian soon warms up to Finn and appreciates that he actually wants to challenge her to face and overcome her fears. The banter between them is so fun, and the more Finn coaches Vivian, the easier it is to root for her to fall for him instead of the other guy she was crushing on. In addition to the romantic angle, there’s also a secret that Finn is hiding that makes this book even more of a page turner!

If you like sweet (no spice), small town romances with characters who are just so easy to root for, definitely check this one out!

🚀 Review - ATMOSPHERE 🚀

Author - Taylor Jenkins Reid

Pub Date - 6/3/25

As a huge Taylor Jenkins Reid fan and as a child of the 1980s who grew up obsessed with the space shuttle program, TJR’s latest novel Atmosphere was just the perfect read for me and I devoured it in a couple of sittings.

I love historical fiction and I really enjoyed how this story unfolded. When the story opens, we meet Joan Goodwin, an astronaut who is serving as the capcom on what quickly becomes a critical space mission. As she does her job in that timeline, the rest of the story unfolds in an earlier timeline to show us the path Joan took to get to where she is. We also learn that everyone aboard the spacecraft she is communicating with came up through the program with her and is like family to her.

I was absolutely riveted to the timeline where Joan is serving as capcom because it turns into a rescue mission and is thus filled with tension and suspense, but I was equally fascinated by her journey to become an astronaut and by her personal journey as well because she’s just such a compelling character. Even though she was always fascinated by space and the stars, Joan had settled for teaching until the space shuttle program decided to recruit women. When she applied and was accepted, a whole new world opened up to her.

Part of Joan’s personal journey was all about exploring her own identity, so there were themes of motherhood, love, and what it means to be a family explored in addition to her career choices. We got to see her interact with her niece Frances, who she adores. We also get to see Joan in a romantic relationship with a fellow astronaut, Vanessa, which I especially loved. It was the 1980s so they mostly had to hide the way they felt from others or risk losing their jobs, but their love for one another was beautiful.

Well researched l, with gorgeous writing and compelling characters, I don’t think I could have asked for more. Well, maybe an epilogue, but otherwise, this was incredible!

🩷 Review - TILL SUMMER DO US PART 🩷

Author - Meghan Quinn

Pub Date - 6/3/25

I love the fake relationship trope and I love a good marriage in crisis story, and in her latest novel, Till Summer Do Us Part, Meghan Quinn creates a mash-up of the two and it is a comedic gem!

The story follows Scottie Price, a divorcee who has just started a new job where not only is she the only woman on the job, but she’s also the only single person. Eager to fit in with all of her happily married coworkers and impress her boss, Scottie pretends she has a husband and when asked why she isn’t wearing a ring, says her marriage is in trouble.

Her little white lie spirals from there when it turns out her boss is married to a marriage counselor and sets up an appointment for her and her non-existent husband the very next day. Backed into a corner, Scottie agrees to take the appointment and then rushes off to her best friend, Mika, hoping that he can help find her a fake husband in less than 12 hours. Mika can’t do it himself, but his brother Wilder is happy to help. Wilder is a millionaire, who loves improv and adventure. He’s just the man for the job!

Wilder pushes all of Scottie’s buttons and also manages to make things even more awkward by signing them up for an adult summer camp so that they can work on their fake marriage! Even though she wants to kill him, the chemistry between Scottie and Wilder is amazing, and the banter and the rom-com style antics are absolutely hilarious.

I also loved that there were emotional moments as well though as these two eventually do realize that they could be good together but have some issues they each need to deal with first. That aspect of the romance is a slow burn, but the tension and build-up is so good and of course you know Quinn always delivers when it comes to the spice!

The audiobook is narrated by Erin Mallon, Teddy Hamilton, and Stephen Dexter, and their performances are just phenomenal. Definitely one of the most entertaining audiobooks I’ve listened to this year!

📚Review - BATTLE OF THE BOOKSTORES 📚

Author - Ali Brady

Pub Date - 6/3/25

This book was just so perfect! It’s my new favorite from Ali Brady, and it makes me smile every time I think about it.

I have a soft spot for books about books and book lovers, so Battle of the Bookstores had my heart right away because it features two rival book sellers, Josie Klein and Ryan Lawson, who both manage bookstores on the same street in Boston. Josie’s store specializes in literary fiction, while Ryan’s is romance only. When the owner of both stores decides he wants to combine the two stores into one store but only keep one manager, he sets up a fierce competition between Josie and Ryan. Whoever turns the most profit by the end of the summer will be the last manager standing.

Aside from being opposites in what kind of books they sell, Josie and Ryan are also opposites in so many other ways as well. What neither of them realize, however, is that even though they clash in real life, they have actually struck up the most amazing online friendship through an anonymous bookish forum where they chat about books and make book recs to each other. If you’re familiar with the Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan rom-com You’ve Got Mail, this book has a similar vibe and I was just so here for it!

I loved everything about this book — the competition element, the banter, all of the cute romcom moments, quirky side characters, and of course the shoutouts to all things bookish, but I think my favorite part was just watching these characters grow so much throughout the book, especially as Josie and Ryan really start to explore their feelings for another and realize what has been right in front of them the whole time. It added just a layer of emotional depth that really stayed with me after I finished the book.

Karissa Vacker is a favorite audiobook narrator so I had to do an immersive read. She & Brandon Francis were perfect as Josie and Ryan & had me feeling all the emotions. 🩷

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

❓QOTD - If you owned a bookstore, would you specialize in certain genres or carry everything?

Behind the Bench is not only the first book in the Green Bay Bobcats hockey romance series, it’s also Jillian Arly’s debut novel and it is a gem of a book!

This is such a bingeable read! I devoured it in a couple a sittings and just fell so hard for both main characters.

Ellie Montgomery has dreamed of coaching in the NHL for as long as she can remember. She’s now the assistant coach of the NHL’s Green Bay Bobcats, but has to prove she belongs in a man’s world. I loved that Ellie is such a force to be reckoned with, and that she’s not going to let anyone stand in the way of her dream, not even her former childhood rival, Lincoln Scott, who has somehow ended up being the head coach of her team.

Whether it’s sparks flying between them while they’re trading insults or it’s more friendly banter as they slowly move past their old grudges, the chemistry between Ellie and Lincoln is everything! I loved how well they worked together as coaches, and I was obsessed with how Lincoln was always Ellie’s biggest supporter, ready to go after anyone who doubted she belonged in the NHL. Swoon!

I also really enjoyed the character development of both Ellie and Lincoln. Both characters were fully fleshed out, and Lincoln’s history in particular, just added such a vulnerable and heartbreaking layer to his childhood rivalry with Ellie. It made me all the more happy that they found their way back to one another in this new environment as it provides a chance for healing and growth.

Speaking of characters, it’s not only the main characters who are fabulous. Arly’s side characters are amazing too. Every woman needs a bestie like Sadie in her life, and Hunter, the other Bobcats assistant coach is hilarious!

Lastly, I also appreciated how the author’s knowledge of hockey, both as a player & coach, came shining through in this book. I loved that and felt that focus on the sport sets this book apart from other hockey romances I’ve read.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

📚 Review - THE MARTHA’S VINEYARD BEACH AND BOOK CLUB 📚

Author - Martha Hall Kelly

Pub Date - 5/27/25

I’m a big fan of Martha Hall Kelly’s historical fiction and her latest book The Martha’s Vineyard Beach and Book Club showed me a fascinating aspect of Martha’s Vineyard that I had no prior knowledge of — its World War II history.

When the story opens, it’s 2016 and we meet Mari Starwood who is grieving the death of her mother and who has traveled to Martha’s Vineyard with nothing but a piece of paper with the name Elizabeth Devereaux on it. Mari has no other family and because she found Elizabeth’s name in her mother’s notes, she has come to meet Elizabeth, hoping maybe there’s some connection between them.

Mari gets way more than she expected when Elizabeth launches into a detailed history about the Smith sisters, Cadence and Briar, who lived in her house long before she did. The story Elizabeth tells is about bold, resilient women trying to keep their family farm from going under while the men are away at war, and it’s about the different ways they try to help the war effort. Cadence and her friend Bess start a book club at first as a way to maintain normalcy, but soon the book club is more than just a book club. I loved how, after hearing that soldiers wanted books, they were determined to create pocket sized versions of books to send to them.

The WWII timeline was also filled with mystery and intrigue, German U boats off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, and even a spy on the island itself! While both timelines were compelling, I have to admit that the WWII timeline was a bit more engaging because of these elements.

As always with Kelly’s books, everything is well researched and her writing is beautiful and filled with likeable characters.

I did an immersive read with the e-book and the ALC and appreciated the narration of Mia Hutchinson-Shaw, Imani Jade Powers & E.J. Lavery. I loved the distinctive voices they gave each character.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

📚 MAY WRAP-UP 📚 Hey book friends! I hope yo 📚 MAY WRAP-UP 📚

Hey book friends! I hope you’re having a great weekend.

Was May a good reading month for you? Thanks to a couple of long weekends, mine was very good. I was able to finish 26 books, including 3 more from my 25 in 2025 challenge.

I read mostly romance as always, but did sneak in a thriller, some fantasy, a cozy mystery, women’s fic, and a historical fiction this month. I also read two wonderful debut authors, who also happen to be members of the booksta community, which made this an extra special month.

My photo features all of the physical copies I read, but I also read a few e-arcs and listened to several audiobooks. As always, I read faster than I review so I’ve flagged the ARCs below that I haven’t reviewed yet but still plan to. You can expect to see those sometime in the next few days. The challenge books I’m also reviewing but I just fit those in as I have time so they may be a while.

❓QOTD: How was your reading month? What were some of your favorite May reads?
