Top Ten Tuesday – Book Covers That Give Me Fall Vibes

November 22, 2022/20 Comments/by Suzanne

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is a Thanksgiving Freebie, so I decided I wanted to do a post to share some of my favorite covers whose colors give me fall vibes.  They’re also colors I associate with Thanksgiving, which is why this seemed like a good time to share them.

Reviews: THE DO-OVER and PRIDE AND PROTEST

November 21, 2022/8 Comments/by Suzanne

Happy Monday and early Happy Thanksgiving wishes to all who will be celebrating this week!  I’ll have a couple more posts this week and then I’ll be taking the rest of the week to start preparing for the small meal we’ll have at my house, followed by traveling to my mom’s house this weekend for another celebration.  Today I’m sharing reviews for two great new books that hit shelves last week, one by one of my favorite authors, Lynn Painter, and the other by a new-to-me author, Nikki Payne, who I definitely want to read more from now. 🙂

Reviews: THE DO-OVER and PRIDE AND PROTESTThe Do-Over Goodreads

Author: Lynn Painter

Publication Date: November 15, 2022

Publisher:  Simon and Schuster Books for Young Readers

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley.  All opinions are my own.

Lynn Painter is quickly becoming one of my favorite romance authors.  I just love the lovable and relatable characters she creates and I’m an especially big fan of the laugh out loud humor that she infuses her stories with.  For those reasons, The Do-Over was already a must-read for me, but throw in the fact that it’s also a time loop story, and I couldn’t pick up my copy fast enough!

The story follows Emilie Hornby, a high school student who has just had the absolute worst Valentine’s Day ever. Between crashing her car into the truck of her aloof lab partner, Nick, and watching her boyfriend Josh cheat on her with another girl, Emilie is just done with this day and heads to her grandma’s house for a sympathetic ear, some ice cream to cheer her up, and a sleepover. Imagine her surprise and horror when she wakes up the next morning in her own bed and it’s Valentine’s Day all over again! After it happens a third time, Emilie starts trying to do little things here and there to break the cycle.

I really enjoyed Emilie’s character. She learns a lot of things about herself while she’s trying to figure out how to escape the time loop, particularly that she’s too much of a people pleaser and needs to learn to stand up for herself more.  I think that’s a lesson that a lot of us can relate to, myself included, so I was particularly invested in watching Emilie’s growth in this area.  I also loved that the lesson and the subsequent growth came in the form of a hilarious “Day of No Consequences” (or the DONC as Emilie dubs it) where Emilie sets out to please no one but herself and thus shenanigans ensue.

In addition to the DONC, one of the biggest highlights of the book for me was Emilie’s evolving relationship with her lab partner, Nick.  I loved watching how Emilie tries different tactics every day of the time loop to try to engage with him more and get him to open up to her.  They had wonderful chemistry, even when dealing with the aftermath of a car accident on repeat, and I loved that Nick, who is clearly so much better for Emilie than cheating Josh, plays a huge role in the DONC and in Emilie’s journey of personal growth.  Nick’s scenes with Emilie added a more in-depth and sometimes poignant element to an otherwise hilarious story and I was 100% there for it.

Hilarious and heartfelt, Lynn Painter’s The Do-Over is sure to please all of the rom-com fans out there.  4.5 STARS

Reviews: THE DO-OVER and PRIDE AND PROTESTPride and Protest Goodreads

Author: Nikki Payne

Publication Date: November 15, 2022

Publisher: Berkley

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley.  All opinions are my own.

Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is one of my all-time favorite romance novels, so I’m always eager to read modern retellings that offer a fresh take on this beloved classic. In Pride and Protest, Nikki Payne does just that.  Payne sets her story in a poor neighborhood in Washington, D.C. and her version of Lizzie Bennett, Liza B., lives in that neighborhood with her family.  Payne’s version of Mr. Darcy, Dorsey Fitzgerald, is the wealthy CEO of a property development company who is set on gentrifying the neighborhood and forcing out poor families.

I found myself immediately invested with both of the main characters.  Liza is a young woman who is a staunch advocate for her community and has no interest in playing nice with the man she sees as threatening the security of those she loves.  I loved her passion for her community and that she used her voice and her platform as a DJ to bring attention to their plight.  Going up against the big developers puts her in the underdog position and I’ll always cheer for the underdog.  I also loved Dorsey though because even though he and Liza butt heads right from the start, it’s clear that there’s way more to him than meets the eye and I immediately wanted to know more about him.

Just as with the original classic, the heart of Pride and Protest of course revolves around Liza and Dorsey getting past the hostilities and hurt feelings of their first encounter and realizing that they have more in common than they realized and that they could be exactly what the other needs. I always enjoy this kind of journey and Payne writes this one so well.  As much as I enjoyed the sparks when they first went head-to-head in the beginning, I enjoyed that journey from enemies to lovers even more.  It’s a slow burn for sure, but the payoff is worth it.

My favorite part of a retelling is the way an author is able to create a fresh new story, while at the same time paying proper homage to the original and Payne succeeds here as well.  Most of her characters parallel characters from the original, familiar enough that fans of Pride and Prejudice will recognize them, but they’re still well drawn and layered enough to stand on their own.  Liza’s mom, Bev, and her sister, Janae, were especially well done, and I enjoyed both characters immensely.

If you’re in the mood for a fresh take on a timeless classic, you’ll want to check out Pride and Protest! 4 STARS

Top Ten Tuesday – 10 Recent Reads I Have Not Reviewed on the Blog

November 15, 2022/41 Comments/by Suzanne

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is actually supposed to be Favorite “Aww” Moments In Books (Share those sweet/cute moments in books that give you warm fuzzies).  I am unfortunately the kind of person who, when reading a topic like this, promptly forgets every moment, aww or not, from every book I’ve ever read. So of course, I completely blanked out and ended up going rogue this week.  I’m way behind on reviews since I took some time off from blogging the last couple of weeks to be with my mom because she was having surgery.  I really need to get caught up so I’m using this week’s TTT to share my thoughts on ten recent reads that I haven’t talked about here yet.  These were meant to be mini reviews but I got a little carried away on a few of them. Oops!

10 Recent Reads I Haven’t Reviewed On My Blog

1. PARIS DAILLENCOURT IS ABOUT TO CRUMBLE by Alexis Hall

I normally love Alexis Hall’s writing and was an especially big fan of Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake, the first book in the Winner Bakes All series, but I have to admit that I struggled with Paris Daillencourt is About to Crumble.  The reality TV baking contest was just as entertaining as in the first book. I loved the behind the scenes moments as we get to watch the show come together and hear the baker’s thoughts on their creations, etc., and I was a huge fan of the hilariously snarky banter between the show’s cohosts and the producers.    I also thought the mental health representation was so well done. Paris, the title character, has an undiagnosed anxiety disorder that is clearly impacting many aspects of his life.  Hall does a wonderful job of realistically showing those impacts as well as Paris’ journey to finally seeking the help he needs.  What actually didn’t work very well for me, unfortunately, was Paris himself and his romantic interest, Tariq, another contestant on the show.  It’s probably just a me thing, but I found Paris to be quite obnoxious, constantly alternating between blurting out offensive elitist comments and then incessantly apologizing for his very existence.  It was kind of cute and quirky at first, but then it got old fast.  Then, there was Tariq, who felt the need to point out to Paris every time he said something offensive, which as I said, is pretty often.  At first I felt bad for Tariq because being with Paris just seemed so exhausting but then that got old too and I was just sitting here like “OMG, it’s not your job to police every stupid thing Paris says.  And why do you offended so easily?” For me, these irritating traits just overshadowed what was otherwise nice chemistry between them and I ultimately found myself indifferent as to whether or not they got a HEA. 3 STARS

2.  THE REWIND by Allison Winn Scotch

If you enjoy a good second chance romance or enemies to lovers romance, you’re going to want to check out The Rewind by Allison Winn Scotch.  I loved this one!  It follows two exes, Frankie and Ezra, who have basically avoided each other for the last ten years after their nasty breakup.  They are forced to see each other again, and to return to their old college campus, when two of their best friends announce they’re getting married there and ask Frankie and Ezra to be in their wedding party.  Frankie hates Ezra so much that she almost tells the bride no, but finally agrees, only to awkwardly bump into Ezra almost as soon as the gets into town.  The entire wedding party engages in some pre-wedding shenanigans at some of their favorite campus haunts, and flash forward a few hours later, and Frankie and Ezra wake up nearly naked, both wearing wedding bands, in a bed in Ezra’s old dorm room, and both with absolutely no memory of what happened to lead to this awkward situation.  The story wonderfully unfolds in a dual timeline, where one timeline takes us back 10 years to see young Ezra and Frankie as they are college students in love, while the other timeline focuses on present-day as Ezra and Frankie try to retrace the events of the previous night, sparks flying between them the entire time.  I really loved the mix of angsty drama and humorous moments, as well as the mystery element of trying to find out what happened.  The Rewind is one of those great reads that has a little something for everyone.  4 STARS

3.  THE STAND-UP GROOMSMAN by Jackie Lau

I really enjoyed being back in the Donut Fall in Love world. This time the story focuses on Lindsay’s best friend Vivian Liao, and Ryan’s best friend, Melvin Lee. Like Ryan, Melvin is a celebrity – an actor and stand up comedian, while Vivian works in finance. Vivian is a fan of Melvin’s comedy until they meet one night and he insults her, basically calling her a corporate finance drone and a sell-out. Vivian vows never to speak to him again, but that plan goes off the rails when Lindsay and Ryan set a wedding date and both Vivian and Melvin are asked to be in the wedding party.

I loved the characters in this story. They were definitely the highlight for me, especially the deep dive into Melvin’s character. On the surface, particularly because of his stand up comedy persona, he comes across as loud, brash and sometimes rude. But once you peel off that outer layer, he’s actually a really sensitive guy who is going through a lot. Vivian is also a character that I loved getting to know. She’s dealing with a very complicated family history and dynamic. She has put up a lot of walls to protect herself and all she has worked for, and so to Mel and to a lot of other people, she comes across as a bit of an “ice princess.” I loved getting a more in-depth look at what made Vivian the way she is and getting to see that so much of what comes across as icy and aloof is really just shyness and vulnerability.

It was a lot of fun watching Vivian and Melvin move through the awkward stages of enemies to friends to more than friends as they decide to call a truce so as not to ruin Ryan and Lindsay’s special day. The more they interact, the more it’s clear how good they are for each other and I was definitely rooting for a happily ever after for them. The only drawback for me was that I felt the pacing was a little show at times, particularly when Melvin is on stage doing his comedy routines. That part dragged a bit for me and since the romance was also slow burn, I found myself occasionally wanting to just skip ahead and get to the good stuff. Still a very enjoyable read overall and one I recommend to anyone who’s a fan of the opposites attract trope and of slow burn romances. 3 STARS

4.  THE THINGS WE LEAVE UNFINISHED by Rebecca Yarros

This was my first time reading something from Rebecca Yarros and man, did she blow me away with this beautifully crafted dual timeline story. The present day follows Georgia Stanton, who has returned to the town where she was raised by her great-grandmother, famous romance novelist Scarlett Stanton.  While there, Georgia encounters her mother, whom she is estranged from, and she is shocked to hear that her mother has been trying to broker a deal to have someone complete Scarlett’s last unfinished manuscript.  Georgia’s mother clearly has dollar signs in her eyes and has already contracted another famous author, Noah Harrison, to do the job.  Georgia and Noah immediately butt heads, although there’s major chemistry there simmering beneath the surface, and the present day timeline follows the evolution of their relationship as Noah sets out the write this book in a way that honors Scarlett’s memory.  The second timeline, which is set in England in 1940, follows the subject matter from Scarlett’s manuscript, which actually turns out to be about Scarlett herself and Jameson,  the handsome American fighter pilot who was the love of her life.  It details the trials and tribulations of being in love with someone in the middle of a warzone, where tragedy can strike at any moment.  Every aspect of this story was beautifully told and I was all in for the couples in both timelines. I also loved the unexpected twist at the end that, for me, just took this book to a whole new level.  5 STARS

5. THE GUNCLE by Steven Rowley

I don’t have too much to say about this one except that it’s one you really have to experience yourself to appreciate what a special, heartwarming, feel good gem of a book it is.  It far exceeded my expectations.  There’s lots of humor in this book too, but my heart just melted watching Patrick, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP, as the kids call him), learn how to parent and care for his niece and nephew after tragedy strikes and leaves them orphaned.  Patrick has a lot to learn and there are many ups and downs, but his love for these kids shines through every step of the way.  5 STARS

6. THE NEAR WITCH by V.E. Schwab

I’ve been working my way through V.E. Schwab’s backlist and finally devoured this witchy read Halloween week.  Although it’s not my favorite from Schwab, it was still a solid read and definitely a good one for spooky season.  I loved the unique premise, that it felt like it was equal parts fairytale, horror story, and even a bit of romance.  The Near Witch is also just such an atmospheric and creepy read. It includes an intense hunt for children who have suddenly and mysteriously started disappearing from their beds, haunting tales of witches and curses, and even a nameless boy who seems to appear and disappear like smoke.  4 STARS

7.  HUSBAND MATERIAL by Alexis Hall

Alexis Hall makes my list twice this week and I had slightly better luck with Husband Material.  It was fun being back in this world and seeing how the relationship between Luc and Oliver has evolved.  I was a little torn on this one because I went in expecting the endless laughs like we got in the first book in the series, but this one, while there’s definitely still some humor, takes a much more dramatic and emotional turn overall.  At first I was a little put off by it just because I came in looking for the laughs, but by the end, I ended up really enjoying and appreciating the realistic portrayals of the ups and downs of a relationship.  3.5 STARS

8.  BREATHLESS by Amy McCulloch

Wow, this one was a roller coaster ride!  It follows journalist Cecily Wong, who is on an expedition to climb Manaslu, the eighth highest peak in the world.  She’s attempting it because if she makes it to the summit, Charles McVeigh, a world famous mountaineer, has agreed to let her interview him.  He typically never grants interviews so Cecily is determined to make the most of this opportunity.  She’s in way over her head though as she doesn’t have the experience to make such a dangerous climb.  Following Cecily as she attempts this is exhilarating and suspenseful in its own right, but add into the mix that her fellow climbers suddenly start dying off one by one in freak accidents that are starting to seem more and more suspicious the higher they climb.  Are these truly accidents or is there a killer among them?  If you’re in the mood for a twisty, atmospheric thriller that will leave you breathless (see what I did there, haha!), you’ll definitely want to check this one out!  4 STARS

9. THE LOST HUSBAND by Katherine Center

Katherine Center is another author whose backlist I’ve slowly been working my way through and The Lost Husband is another absolutely lovely read from her. It’s a heartwarming, poignant story about the challenges of moving on after the loss of a loved one. It follows Libby Moran, whose husband suddenly and unexpectedly died, leaving her alone to raise her precocious young daughter.  When we meet Libby, she is living with her overbearing and overly critical mother and is looking for an escape.  That escape comes in the form of a letter from her quirky Aunt Jean who invites Libby and her daughter to come live on her goat farm.  Libby accepts, and thus begins a life changing adventure for her as she starts to find her path forward after loss.  I adored everything about this book – the characters, the farm/small town setting, the handsome loner who may just be the one to open Libby’s heart to love again, and the story’s overall message. There’s even a Netflix adaptation of this one and I can’t wait to watch it! 4.5 STARS

10. THE HACIENDA by Isabel Canas

Set right after the Mexican War of Independence, The Hacienda is described as Mexican Gothic meets Rebecca. The story follows Beatriz, whose father is executed in the aftermath of the war. When Don Rodolfo Solórzano proposes to Beatriz, she chooses to ignore the rumors surrounding his first wife’s demise, desperate to seize the security his country estate offers. Rodolfo’s home unfortunately is not the sanctuary she was hoping for, and when he heads back to the capital to work, visions and voices invade Beatriz’s sleep. Rodolfo’s sister, Juana, scoffs at Beatriz’s fears, but Beatriz knows two things for certain: Something is wrong with the hacienda. And no one there will help her. Desperate for help, Beatriz turns to a young priest, Padre Andrés. No ordinary priest, Andrés will have to rely on his skills as a witch to battle the presence haunting the hacienda and protect Beatriz for whom he feels a powerful, forbidden attraction. But even he might not be enough to battle the darkness.  It took me a few chapters to really get into this story, but once it grabbed me, I couldn’t put it down. It’s gripping and suspenseful, with a creepy Gothic vibe. The perfect read for spooky season! 4 STARS

🐶 REVIEW - HAPPY ENDING 🐶

Author - Chloe Liese

Pub Date - 4/14/26

I’m a huge fan of Chloe Lieses’ Bergman Brothers series, so I’ve been eagerly awaiting this new book and it did not disappoint!

Alex and Thea unexpectedly meet when Alex goes to his ex’s house to pick up his daughter and Thea goes to her ex’s to pick up her dog, and they realize that their exes are now living together. There’s no instant attraction here though. Instead they become fast friends as they initially commiserate about the awkward and heartbreaking situation.they are each in. I loved the bond of friendship that grew between them as they go through the shared emotional experience of a relationship ending. They are such a comfort and support to one another, and I thought Liese did a great job writing each of their healing journeys so that they felt authentic.

Liese effectively uses a dual timeline to show us how Alex and Thea’s friendship began and how the relationship blossomed in the past, and how the relationship gradually evolves into more than friendship in the present timeline. I really enjoyed the way the relationship unfolded through the two timelines. It kept me fully invested in them, both as friends and as more, and had me rooting for them to be each other’s second chance at love.

I was a little conflicted about the fake relationship aspect of the story but it did not take away from my overall enjoyment of the book.

I read this one with my eyes and ears and thought the audiobook was fantastic. Jesse Vilinsky narrates and does such a great job capturing all of the emotions that Alex and Thea go through. The dual timelines are also easy to follow along with and I comfortably listened at 1.7x speed.

Overall, a great reading and listening experience.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

❓QOTD - Do you listen to audiobooks? If so, what’s your usual listening speed?

AOTD - I’m obsessed with audiobooks but 1.75x is my top speed. Any higher and I get lost. 😅
📚 What I’ve Been Reading from My Physical TBR 📚 What I’ve Been Reading from My Physical TBR 📚

Hey everyone! I’ve been working hard on my 26 in 2026 challenge to wrap up some books that have been on my physical TBR for too long. I don’t really have time to do full reviews, but wanted to share a few quick thoughts on each.

✨Collide by Bal Khabra - I thought this spicy college hockey romance was really charming. I loved the chemistry between Summer and Aiden, and I thought it was fun that this was a reverse grumpy-sunshine romance too. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

✨On Loverose Lane by Samantha Young - I didn’t realize this was a spinoff from another series when I first picked it up, but I still enjoyed it. I’m always up for a good fake dating story and this one delivered both in terms of emotion and humor to keep it from getting too heavy. Loved both Beth and Callan. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

✨The Highland Fling by Meghan Quinn - I’m a sucker for an enemies to lovers, grumpy sunshine romance and this one, which was set in the Scottish Highlands, was such a good time. Full of Quinn’s hilarious banter and steamy scenes, I was entertained from start to finish. I loved the chemistry between Bonnie and Rowan, and also the journey of growth for Bonnie, who is a bit immature early on. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

✨The Rom Con by Devon Daniels - This was a fun story that featured rival journalists, a dating guide from the 1950’s, and how one journalist tries to use that guide to write a column that involves embarrassing her rival. Things don’t go as planned and it’s an entertaining ride with major How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days vibes. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

✨Ready or Not by Cara Bastone - I’m not normally a big fan of the accidental pregnancy trope but I knew Bastone would handle it well, and I ended up loving it in this beautifully written friends to lovers romance. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

✨Block Shot by Kennedy Ryan - Ryan’s characters and their relationships always feel so authentic, so it’s easy to become invested in them. That was the case with Jared and Banner in this second chance romance. They were so good together & I was rooting for the two of them to work through their past issues so they could have their much deserved HEA. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

📚 Review - THE WRITE OFF 📚

Author - Kara McDowell

Pub Date - 4/7/26

Romance books where the characters are authors are pure catnip for me. Add in some second chance romance, rivals to lovers, and make it a slow burn, & this book felt like it was made for me!

Due to a last minute scheduling change, authors Mars Darling and West Emerson end up assigned to co-host a panel together at their alma mater’s book festival. There’s just one problem - Mars loathes West and wants nothing to do with him.

I was hooked from the moment these two run into each other and Mars practically has steam coming out of her ears because she hates West so much. At the same time though, there are clearly major sparks between them so I was fully invested in learning their history.

I loved that their story unfolds through the use of a dual timeline. We get to see how Mars and West become friends and friendly rivals in a college writing class and how they grow closer and closer until that relationship slowly turns romantic but then tragically falls apart.

At the same time, we follow the present timeline as these two are forced to confront each other and work through their issues. Along the way, they slowly remember how they once felt about each other and wonder if a second chance is even possible at this point after all of the hurt they have put each other through.

I will admit Mars rubbed me wrong a couple of times along the way because she was so relentless with her hatred of West, but I was still invested in her finding her way back to him because, as seen in the past timeline, the two of them are amazing together. West is also just so precious that he had my heart for the entire book, especially after learning more about his past and what happened to ultimately break up his relationship with Mars.

Highly recommend this one for fans of:

✨Second chances
✨Slow Burn
✨Forced Proximity
✨Enemies/Rivals to Lovers
✨Friends to Lovers
✨Yearning
✨MMC inspires FMC’s hero in her popular romantasy series

🩷 PINK WEDNESDAY - SPRAYED EDGES 🩷 Hey book 🩷 PINK WEDNESDAY - SPRAYED EDGES 🩷

Hey book friends! I hope you’re having a good week so far. I’m doing pretty well, just really busy at work this week and eager to get to the weekend. Busy or not, I had to get some pink into my feed with a Pink Wednesday post and this week I thought it would be fun to share some of the sprayed edges from my book collection. I honestly don’t have that many books with sprayed edges, but somehow almost all of them are some shade of pink.

❓QOTD - How’s your week going so far? Or do you collect any books with sprayed edges? Could you guess any of these before looking at my list of which books were featured?

🇫🇷 Review - THE PARIS MATCH 🇫🇷

Author - Kate Clayborn

Pub Date - 4/7/26

Paris is one of my favorite cities, so I can never resist reading a romance that is set there. This book was such a treat too. I devoured The Paris Match in a couple of sittings and adored every page of it!

I was hooked from the moment I met Layla on her flight to Paris and learned about the impossible situation she has put herself in. Layla is on the way to the wedding of Emily, her ex sister-in-law, and not only will her ex be there but he will be there with his new girlfriend. Yes, their divorce was amicable, but Paris is also where they went on their honeymoon years ago so it’s all just super awkward. It endeared Layla to me because I thought it was sweet she was still close with Emily and didn’t want to disappoint her, but wow, I don’t think I could have done it.

What unexpectedly distracts Layla from the awkwardness with her ex is when she meets Griffin, the handsome but gruff best man. When Emily gets cold feet because of something Layla says and thinks about cancelling the wedding, Griffin confront Layla and demands that she fix the situation. What starts as an uncomfortable alliance turns into so much more as Griffin and Layla grow closer as they work together. I thought they had incredible chemistry and I was fully invested in their spicy, slow burn romance.

I also just loved each character individually. Griffin is carrying both physical and emotional scars from a fire years ago, as well as major survivor’s guilt. He’s slow to let others in but completely devoted to his best friend.

My heart hurt for Griffin for much of the book, but I loved that he started to let Layla in and also that he was able to get past the walls Layla has put up to protect herself while on this trip. Griffin helps Layla fall in love with Paris all over again so that it’s no longer tainted by her past failed relationship there.

Overall, just a lovely story. Highly recommend to anyone who loves a story about fresh starts & second chances.

☂️ Review - THE BOOK WITCH ☂️

Author - Meg Shaffer

Pub Date - 4/7/26

“All stories are love stories when you love stories.”

You all know I love books about books and The Book Witch might be my new favorite! It is truly a gem of a book.

The story follows Rainy March, a book witch. A book witch’s job is to hop into any book as needed in order to defend characters from enemies called burners who want to destroy the books they hate.

Book witches can also fetch characters who have gone rogue and coax them back so as to keep the original story intact. Their mode of transportation in and out of books are umbrellas, a la Mary Poppins. There are strict rules that all book witches are meant to follow in order to maintain the integrity of the books and the separation between fiction and reality.

Rainy tries her hardest to follow all of the rules but struggles a bit because she is in love with the Duke of Chicago, the charming detective in her favorite mystery series. When Rainy’s grandfather goes missing, however, Rainy throws most of the rules out the window when she enlists the help of the Duke to help her solve the mystery of what happened to her grandfather and what it has to do with The Secret of the Old Clock, the first book in the Nancy Drew series.

I was truly captivated by this whimsical story as the clues have Rainy, her cat Koshka, and the Duke hopping from book to book, adventure to adventure, and visiting some of my favorite books, including Through the Looking Glass, The Great Gatsby, and of course the Nancy Drew series. There’s also just so much love for books and those who write them on every page of this book and a special nod to the power of books and how much they can truly add to our lives, especially when we’re going through rough times.

Overall this book just felt like the wamest of hugs. I adored Rainy March and actually shed a few tears when I came to the end of her story.

❓QOTD - What are some of your favorite books from your childhood?
📚 MESSY MONDAY - MARCH WRAP-UP 📚 Hey book f 📚 MESSY MONDAY - MARCH WRAP-UP 📚

Hey book friends! I hope your April is off to a great start. Was March a good reading month for you?

I read 18 books in March, which is a little less than usual for me, but I’ve had a lot on my plate with my husband’s post-surgery care and many follow-up appointments so I still think I did pretty well overall. I did especially well with my 26 in 2026 challenge, reading three more books from that list!

My photo features all of the physical copies I read, but I also read a few e-arcs and listened to several audiobooks as well. As always I’m somewhat behind on reviews, so I’ll be doing a mini review post in the near future to try to get caught up.

❓QOTD: How was your reading month? What were some of your favorite March reads? What was your first read of April?

AOTD: I started April by finishing two books I had started in March but just couldn’t finish by the end of the month, The Paris Match and Happy Ending.

🎧 REVIEW - LOVE BY THE BOOK 🎧

Author - Jessica George

Pub Date - 4/7/26

Love By the Book is a beautiful story that explores the power of friendship, with a special focus on that sense of loss that comes when old friends drift apart as well as the sense of hope that comes when new friends enter our lives.

The story follows Remy and Simone, two women who could both really use a friend. Remy is an author who wrote a best selling book that focused on her best friends. Since then, however, her friend group has drifted apart as some have moved, started families, or become involved in new relationships, leaving Remy behind. Not only that but it has given her writer’s block and she is really struggling to write her second book. Simone is an elementary school teacher, who was very close to her family until they learned about her second job and cut her off.

Simone and Remy meet at a bookstore, and their connection is instant. It was lovely watching their bond of friendship grow, truly heartwarming watching them both emerge from the depths of the loneliness they had both been mired in. I really loved how the author wrote both of the characters, infusing them with so many layers. The friendship between them came across as authentic, with plenty of emotional conversations as well as many laughs, as with any real friendship.

There’s also quite a focus on life as an author, so if you enjoy books about books, this story also has that going for it.

The theme of friendship is what really resonated with me though and one I think will resonate with many readers. I mean, who hasn’t had friendships that either drift apart or we simply outgrow?

The audiobook is narrated by Isabel Adomakoh Young and she does a wonderful job of giving each character a unique voice. The narration is easy to follow and just really brings this wonderful character driven story to life.

✨Review - UNBOUND (Undone #3) ✨

Author - Peyton Corinne

Pub Date - 4/7/2026

Paloma and Bennett were each other’s first love, but their relationship ended in heartbreak. Bennett still isn’t entirely sure what happened between them, but his love for Paloma is still as strong as ever. Reunited now that they are in college, Paloma has crafted a facade for herself to hide the trauma that still lingers with her, but Bennett can see through the facade to the girl he once loved and still does. He wants to save Paloma from anything and anyone that can harm her, including herself, while Paloma wants to save Bennett from her and all of the pain associated with her.

Wow, what an emotional and angsty read! With Bennett and Paloma’s story, Peyton Corinne ripped my heart apart but then put it back together again in the most beautiful way. I loved getting their story from both POVs as well as through flashbacks to find out what exactly drove them apart in the part and to lear about the trauma that has shaped Paloma in the person she is now. They’re both dealing with so many painful challenges and it was beautiful to ultimately watch them find a path to healing together. The story has so much heartbreak, but there’s also a lot of hope and love, and I just adored how the author wrote both of these characters.

The audiobook, narrated by Stephen Dexter and Meg Slyvan, was also fantastic! The narrators beautifully captured the love and all of the emotion and tension between Bennett and Paloma as they navigate their journey to healing and back to one another.

Highly recommend if you’re a fan of:

✨MMC who is soft and gentle and loves poetry
✨FMC with her walls up
✨Angst and yearning
✨Second chance romance
✨Dual POV
✨Dual Timeline
✨Found Family
✨Neurodivergent Rep
✨Healing Together

✨ Review - THE NAME GAME ✨

Author - Beth O’Leary

Pub Date - 4/7/2026

Imagine that you are looking to make a fresh start and that you’ve landed a new job on a perfect little remote island called Orner, only to get there and find that someone else with the same name as you has also just arrived on the island, claiming to have landed the exact same job. That’s the unique premise of Beth O’Leary’s latest romance, The Name Game, and it definitely drew me in and had me wanting to know what the heck was going on. Was it coicidence or had someone actually orchestrated this strange encounter between two people named Charlie Jones?

I loved the small town vibes of the island of Orner. Only about 500 people live there and they are all up in each other’s business and they were all just as curious about the two Charlies as I was, so I felt like we were all trying to figure out what was going on together. They were also a quirky cast of characters so that made for a fun reading experience.

There were also rivals to lovers vibes as the two Charlies agree to both work at the job for a couple of months so the owner can then choose between them. Because one of the job perks was a place to live, the two Charlies also agree to live under the same roof. Nothing like a little forced proximity to get the sparks flying!

I really enjoyed getting to know both of the Charlies and was fully invested in finding out why each of them wanted a fresh start. Their reasons added some nice emotional depth to the story, in addition to the romance and the mystery of how both of them somehow ended up on Orner. There were also some twists at the end related to that mystery, which threw me for a loop, but in a good way.

I did struggle at first with the way much of each character’s backstory unfolds through emails and journals, but once I caught on as to which Charlie was which, that sorted itself out and led to me really enjoying the story overall.

❓QOTD - If you had the chance to make a fresh start somewhere else, would you choose a big city or a smaller, more remote location?
