Beat the Backlist 2017 Reading Challenge: My TBR

December 30, 2016/7 Comments/by Suzanne

The Beat the Backlist Challenge is hosted by Austine at NovelKnight.com and its focus is to encourage readers to finally get through some titles that have been on your TBR for a while, or even those that have gotten pushed aside for new releases.  The primary guideline for the challenge is that the books you choose must have been published prior to 2017.  Also, this challenge  runs from January 1st to December 31st, 2017 so you have a whole year to work on that TBR.  Post updates throughout the year with #beatthebacklist.

This will be the first challenge I’ve participated in since I joined the blogging community so I’m pretty excited about it.  My TBR is also out of control so I think this challenge is perfect for me.  I’m forever shoving aside books I still really want to read in favor of newer releases.  It’s time to take control of my TBR!

Below is my tentative (and possibly overly ambitious) list of books that I want to get off my backlist this year. May the force be with me!

  1.  A Storm of Swords by George R. R. Martin
  2. A Gathering of Shadows by V.E. Schwab
  3. The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater
  4. Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman
  5. Scarlet by Marissa Meyer
  6. An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir
  7. We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
  8. Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
  9. Landline by Rainbow Rowell
  10. The Red Tent by Anita Diamant
  11. A Shadow Bright and Burning by Jessica Cluess
  12. Holding Up the Universe by Jennifer Niven
  13. We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
  14. My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante
  15. Lily and the Octopus by Steven Rowley
  16. A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas
  17. Today Will Be Different by Maria Semple
  18. Labyrinth Lost by Zoraida Córdova
  19. When We Collided by Emery Lord
  20. Illuminae by Amie Kaufman
  21. Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng
  22. A Man Called Ove by Fredrik Backman
  23. Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed
  24. In a Dark, Dark Wood by Ruth Ware
  25. The Orphan Master’s Son by Adam Johnson

I also signed up for the optional Hogwarts House mini challenge because it sounded like fun.  The house I chose to represent is Gryffindor.  Thanks so much to Austine for hosting such a great challenge and good luck to everyone who is participating!

Goodreads Synopsis:   Seventeen year-old Britta Flannery is at ease only in the woods with her dagger and bow. She spends her days tracking criminals alongside her father, the legendary bounty hunter for the King of Malam—that is, until her father is murdered. Now outcast and alone and having no rights to her father’s land or inheritance, she seeks refuge where she feels most safe: the Ever Woods. When Britta is caught poaching by the royal guard, instead of facing the noose she is offered a deal: her freedom in exchange for her father’s killer.

However, it’s not so simple.

The alleged killer is none other than Cohen McKay, her father’s former apprentice. The only friend she’s ever known. The boy she once loved who broke her heart. She must go on a dangerous quest in a world of warring kingdoms, mad kings, and dark magic to find the real killer. But Britta wields more power than she knows. And soon she will learn what has always made her different will make her a daunting and dangerous force.

My Thoughts:

What a fun read this was! Erin Summerill’s Ever the Hunted is one of those books that has something for everyone.  There’s fantasy and magic, there’s political intrigue and a King who is acting as though he’s gone mad, there’s adventure and danger, and yes, there’s even a bit of romance thrown in there as well. I don’t want to give away too many plot details but let me just say that you should only read Ever the Hunted when you don’t have any pressing real-life responsibilities to attend to – I made the mistake of starting it while getting ready for Christmas. I got so thoroughly sucked into Britta’s story that I ended up way behind in my Christmas preparations.  Cookies almost didn’t get baked, gifts were bought last minute, and I was down to the wire with getting all of my decorations up. Very stressful.  That said, it was totally worth it. Ever the Hunted is just that good!

Highlights for me:

The World Building and the System of Magic:   Summerill has set her novel in the kingdoms of Malam and Shaerdan.  These neighboring kingdoms are on the brink of war with each other, so tensions are running high all around when the novel begins.  Summerill does a wonderful job of conveying that sense of tension every step of the way. You can just feel that war is about to break out at any moment.  At the center of all that tension is magic.  The kingdom of Shaerdan embraces magic and has among its citizens women who are called Channelers.  Channelers possess magical powers that enable them to manipulate certain elements in nature – water, for example.  While Shaerdan and its citizens accept this magic and the belief that Channelers use their gifts for good, the kingdom of Malam and its people, on the other hand, scorn and shun Channeler magic as well as those who practice it.

Britta Flannery:  Britta is, by far, the highlight of Ever the Hunted for me. Britta is the protagonist and right from the start, Summerill creates in her a character that readers will immediately connect with. When we meet Britta, she is mourning her father, a respected Malam bounty hunter, who has been murdered.  As if that wasn’t tragic enough, Britta is also basically homeless due to circumstances beyond her control.  Britta’s mother, who is also deceased, was a Shaerden citizen who was also believed to be a Channeler.  Because the magic passes from mother to daughter, Britta is ostracized by the people of Malam because she could possibly be a Channeler, and she is prohibited by Malam law from inheriting her father’s land as well. Britta is therefore completely alone and desperately seeking both shelter and food when we first meet her.

While I felt that immediate sense of empathy for Britta because she’s in such a vulnerable state, what really attracted me to her was her resourcefulness, her intelligence, and her sense of independence.  It’s very clear that her father has taught her well in the time they had together, probably anticipating that there would come a time when Britta would need to fend for herself.  She therefore doesn’t just roll over and accept her situation as a death sentence. No, she grabs her dagger and her bow and sets out to track and secure food not only for herself, but also that she can trade in town for a place to stay.  And she does this knowing all the while that the penalty for poaching is death. I loved that she was willing to take such risks and make the hard choices. She’s the ultimate survivor.

I have to admit that I admired Britta’s resourcefulness so much that I was actually a bit excited when she got caught poaching because I wanted to see how she was going to get herself out of such a predicament. My excitement did wane a bit once her way out was revealed:  Britta could have her freedom and her father’s land if, using her tracking skills, she helped to track down his killer.  Sounds like a fair deal, right? Well, there’s a bit of a catch.  The suspected killer is a young man by the name of Cohen McKay, who was Britta’s only friend in the world as well as her father’s apprentice.  Britta doesn’t believe for an instant that Cohen is guilty, but has no choice but to go along with this deal if she wants to live.

When she tracks Cohen and they escape together, they quickly realize that the only way they’re really going to ever be free is to find the real murderer.  This is where the real action of the story actually begins as they embark on a dangerous quest across these two warring kingdoms following clues and searching for the killer. It is also while on this quest that Britta learns that, like her mother, she too possesses a kind of magic and must learn how to understand and control her power.

Fabulous Secondary Characters:

Enat:  Enat is a Channeler who helps Britta to better understand who she really is.  After Britta, Enat is definitely my next favorite character. She’s this feisty old lady who is truly a force to be reckoned with.  Enat, like Britta, knows how to wield a bow and arrow and isn’t afraid to use it, whether it’s to hunt or to fire warning shots at people she thinks are creeping around too close to her home.  She’s just a real character in every since of the word.

Leif:  Leif was a surprise favorite character for me.  He’s actually one of the prison guards who attends to Britta when she is captured for poaching and who is assigned to escort her on her mission to track her father’s killer.  While the other guards are just rude and nasty, Leif shows Britta a lot of kindness at every opportunity and tries to help her whenever he can.  The friendship that grows between them is just really sweet.

Subtle Handling of the Romance:  Generally speaking, I’m not a huge fan of romance, especially love at first sight or when the characters are so obsessed with each other that they lose sight of what they’re supposed to be focused on.  (Mare from The Red Queen comes to mind.)  Therefore I was a little apprehensive when I started to sense some attraction between Britta and Cohen.  Summerill thankfully, however, does a very nice job of keeping the romantic element subtle, and most importantly, believable.   As I’ve already mentioned, Cohen and Britta grew up together, becoming the best of friends while Cohen apprenticed for Britta’s father.  They clearly have history together and now that they’re both grown, their friendship is becoming something more.  It’s a natural progression for their relationship and it doesn’t overshadow the action/adventure/danger element of the story.

The Unexpected Twist at the End! I can’t really say anything at all about it without giving too much away, but as soon as I read the last few pages, I immediately wanted to get my hands on the next book in the series.

Anything I Didn’t Care For:

I would have liked a little more insight into the Channeler magic, especially Britta’s specific kind of magic since it apparently is quite rare even among Channelers.  I guess since she was just learning about it herself, it’s to be expected that we would just get the basics, but I definitely hope that the second book will more fully explore it as Britta hones her skills because what she is able to do is really quite fascinating!

Who Would I Recommend Ever the Hunted to?

As I said, this book has something for everyone so I can’t think of anyone I wouldn’t recommend it to.  If you like resourceful heroines and plenty of action and adventure, I think you’d like this one. I also think this is one of those YA books that would appeal to a wide range of ages, from teens on up through adults.  It’s just a wildly entertaining read!

Rating:   4 Stars!

Thanks so much to Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and of course to Erin Summerill for allowing me to preview this wonderful book!

About Erin Summerill

Erin Summerill was born in England. After spending years bouncing between Air Force bases in Hawaii, England, and California, her family settled in Utah, where Erin graduated with a B.A. in English from Brigham Young University. She had aspirations to write the next great American novel, but writing proved tougher than she first thought. So she grabbed a Nikon and became a professional photographer while crafting manuscript after manuscript. The scenic detour of shooting weddings across the United States, as well as internationally, provided world-building inspiration. It gave her the vision to draft her debut YA fantasy, EVER THE HUNTED. Now when she isn’t writing, or shooting a wedding, she’s chasing her four kids, two dogs, one cat, and five chickens. This could be why she downs massive amounts of Coke Zero and Hot tamales.

Top Ten Tuesday: My Top 10 Reads of 2016

December 27, 2016/26 Comments/by Suzanne

top ten tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a fun weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s topic is Top Ten Best Books Of 2016 (you choose — best books overall of what you read regardless of pub date, of a particular genre, 2016 debuts, 2016 releases, etc).

I had a great year reading-wise in 2016 and found it very hard to choose just ten favorites.  Most of these are 2016 releases, but I did sneak one 2015 and one 2017 release onto the list just because I loved them so much.  These are basically the 10 reads that moved me the most in 2016.  Some made me laugh, while others made me cry.  The common denominator between them all – they were all so beautifully written.  Here’s hoping that 2017 is an equally great year for reading!

🔮 Review - MAGGIE AND ARTHUR’S MAGIC MOMENT 🔮

Author - Leslie Rene

Pub Date - 7/28/26

What adelightful debut romantasy! If you’re like me and you enjoy books with an academic setting, and you also enjoy a magical setting, you’re definitely going to want to check out this book.

Maggie and Arthur are both professors at the same magical university. Arthur is a broody alchemist with celebrity status, while Maggie is the passionate professor of Linguistics and Incantation Translation. Maggie, whose budget was slashed to accomodate Arthur, is not a fan of his.

When an experiment gone wrong releases a ghostly pall and forces the closure of one of the campus buildings, Maggie is forced to share her tiny office with Arthur. Arthur is tasked with devising a spell to get rid of the pall and Maggie offers to help (to get him out of her space) & soon everything changes between them.

I was hooked on Maggie and Arthur from the very first scene in the book. They are both attending a magical masquerade ball at the end of the semester and not realizing who they were flirting with, they end up sharing an unforgettable kiss. As much as Maggie seems to actually loathe Arthur, I couldn’t wait for them to realize they had actually kissed each other and had incredible chemistry at the ball.

I really enjoy the rivals to lovers and forced proximity tropes and thought both were written so well here. What was also fun is that instead of being a grumpy-sunshine romance, both Arthur and Maggie are grumpy, which made me chuckle.

The tension, the banter, and the slow burn of the romance itself was fabulous, but I also just really loved them working together to eliminate the pall.

The writing is cozy but also atmospheric & suspenseful, and it was so easy to visualize the runes, the pall itself, the ghouls & banshees roaming around, and the actual haunted forest that is located near the school. Excellent worldbuilding & a truly magical read in every way!

⚾️ REVIEW - JUST FOR THE PLOT ⚾️

Author - Meghan Quinn

Pub Date - 7/29/2026

Just for the Plot is the second book in Meghan Quinn’s Bay Area Players series, a spicy sports romance series that is fast becoming one of my favorites from her.

This time around we are focused on Bennett, a pro baseball player in San Francisco. He’s focused and disciplined, basically the golden boy of his team. I loved Bennett in the first book and it was so funny to watch all of that discipline and focus go out the window when Bower moves to town. Bower is his older sister’s best friend, and the woman he has been down bad for since he was a teenager.

Bower is a woman after my own book loving heart. She currently works as a caregiver, but she is a book obsessed girlie whose dream is to open her own bookstore. When Bower moves into Bennett’s apartment building and the two of them start a spicy bookclub together, I was truly in my happy place and loving every scene where they read together and especially when they shared their spicy bookish confessions. Those scenes were romance gold!

Bennett’s detemination to win Bower over and to make her see him as something other than his sister’s little brother made him just such an endearing character. The Gladdy Daddies group chat provided endless moments of hilarity that had me laughing out loud as he goes to them for advice on how to woo Bower.

I truly loved eveything about this book! The banter, tension, and the longing as we wait for Bower to finally see Bennett was absolutely perfect and had me cheering them both on so hard. It’s a slow burn, the payoff is so worth the wait and the spice is definitely spicing!

The audiobook is duet narrated by Teddy Hamilton and Samantha Brentmoor, two of my favorites, and they were perfection as always, perfectly capturing every emotion and making Quinn’s banter pop.

Highly recommend this one for fans of:

🪿Review - WILD GOOSE CHASE 🪿

Author - Sarah Adler

Pub Date - 7/28/2026

I had such a good time reading this one! I mean, how often do you come across a romance where the characters fall for each other while trying to track down a missing taxidermied goose? Just thinking about it makes me giggle. 😂

I’m also just such a sucker for a grumpy-sunshine romance and this one features Callahan, a grumpy antiques dealer and Annie, the ray of sunshine who has been brought in to help in Callahan’s store while his partner is away. These two butt heads right from the start, but there is also some major chemistry bubbling below the surface between them. I love the banter between them as Annie wants to infuse his shop wtih more personality and he wants no parts of it until Annie discovers the illegal and rare taxidermied goose he is hiding and blackmails him over it. Callahan’s ex found it in her attic and begged him for help in getting rid of it, and he just couldn’t say no. He really wishes he had though when it goes missing and he and Annie have to find it before someone else finds and report it.

I love romcom shenanigans and the premise of chasing after this goose definitely provides for lots of shenanigans. I laughed out loud so many times along the way and just loved watching Callahan and Annie grow closer while they’re trying to track down the goose. They’re opposites in so many ways - he’s grumpy and awkward, while she’s cheerful and very social - but they end up making a great team.

There’s also a great dual timeline that provides some context for how the rare goose came to be discovered.

If you’re in the mood for a charming and unique romcom, definitely check out Wild Goose Chase!

✨REVIEW - MEET ME IN PARIS ✨

Author - Kristin Harmel

Pub Date - 7/28/26

Kristin Harmel is one of my favorite historical fiction authors, but it was a real treat to dive into her latest novel, Meet Me in Paris, and realize it’s contemporary fiction. The synopsis describes it as Love, Actually meets The Notebook and that feels like a pretty accurate comparison.

The story follows nine Americans all at different points in their lives who have travelled to Paris. The one thing they all have in common is that they are trying to find their way to some kind of happy ending or at least a path forward for themselves. That’s a lot of characters to keep track of, but their stories all resonate so much that it ends up being very easy to keep everyone straight.

Some standouts for me were the mother and daughter who have planned a last minute trip after a terminal cancer diagnosis to make as many happy memories as possible. Then there’s the elderly gentleman who has traveled to reunite with the love of his life who he thought had died decades ago, only to learn that she is alive and in a memory care facility.

I thought this story was a beautifully written exploration of grief and loss, but also of love, second chances, and new beginnings. I was thoroughly invested in the characters I’ve already mentioned, but honestly in all nine of the characters’ journeys. Every character is so well developed, and I loved the way the story moved between each of their stories and some of their stories even become entwined in very moving ways.

Paris of course is the star of the story and is described so vividly that you’ll feel like you have travelled there with these characters and explored the charms of the city with them.

I read this one with my eyes and ears and find the audiobook to be especially captivating. Madeleine Maby narrates & does a wonderful job of making each character feel unique & of capturing the sad yet hopeful tone of the story.

Such a beauitufl read!

📚WHAT I’VE BEEN READING FROM MY PHYSICAL TBR 📚 He 📚WHAT I’VE BEEN READING FROM MY PHYSICAL TBR 📚

Hey book friends! I have continued to work on my 26 in 2026 challenge to whittle down my physical TBR. I’m trying to clear some piles of books off my floor now so I’m coming at you with some quick thoughts on some recent reads.

✨Mr. Nice Spy by Tiana Smith - This was a really fun romance that felt half romcom, half romantic suspense. It features Andee, a fireworks designer, who along with Adam, a cute CIA operative, is kidnapped by her father, an international criminal. As they work to take down her dad, Andee and Adam. Loved the combo of banter and tension and high stakes action and suspense. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

✨Rewind It Back by Liz Tomforde - The final book in the Windy City series, it’s a sweet and spicy second chance romance featuring childhood friends who are now neighbors. Filled with so much pining and also amazing found family vibes. Great finale for a wonderful series. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫

✨Wild Card by Elsie Silver - This is the final book in the Rose Hill series and it features a romance between Gwen, a yoga instructor, and Bash, a firefighter pilot, who happens to be the dad of Gwen’s ex. I thought this was written well and in a way that had me rooting for Gwen and Bash, but also rooting for Bash and his son to find their own path forward. Recommend for fans of age gap, grumpy sunshine, and heartwarming, spicy romances. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

✨Sunshine & Spice by Aurora Palit - This was a fun read that features some of my favorite tropes - grumpy/sunshine & fake dating.. As fun as the romance is, what I liked most was the cultural aspect as the FMC gets to learn so much about her own Bengali culture and traditions. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

✨Walkoff Wedding by Maren Moore - Final book in the Orleans University series and it’s a great combo of sweet & spicy romance. It features Grant and Addie, online penpals who become friends even though they are opposites in every way. This leads to a marriage of convenience to save Addie from an unwanted marrage arranged by her father. Loved Grant and Addie and it was also great to see characters from the other boo
✨ FIVE STAR FRIDAY ✨ SCORE by Kennedy Ryan Pub D ✨ FIVE STAR FRIDAY ✨

SCORE by Kennedy Ryan

Pub Date - 5/19/2026

I have read so many great books this month, but my absolute favorite so far has been Score by Kennedy Ryan. It’s the second book in her Hollywood Renaissance series and it is both a moving second chance romance and a very realistic portrayal of mental illness and how it can impact, not just of the person with the illness, but also their friends and loved ones.

Verity Hill is studying screenwriting in college when she meets and loves in love with musician Monk Bellamy. Even though they have only known one another for a short time, their connection is intense and both of them feel like they are each other’s end game. That is, until Verity inexplicably throws it all away and ends up leaving school and leaving Monk behind, heartbroken. Ten years later they are reunited when they are both hired to work on a film together, reopening not only old wounds, but also the renewed possibility of a future together. Verity now knows why she did what she did in college, but does she have the courage to share everything about back then with Monk?

Oh my gosh, you guys! The way I just ate this book up! One of my favorite things about how Kennedy Ryan writes is that her characters are so complex, layered, and real. I felt like I knew these characters so well, to the extent that I didn’t just feel like I was reading about them. I felt like I was right there in the room with them, eavesdropping on and witnessing their most vulnerable moments, yelling at Verity to just tell Monk the truth, that the truth has to be better than what he has been thinking for the past decade.

I also thought Ryan’s depiction of bipolar disorder was so well done. I felt like it was described accurately and that it was handled with great care. One of the characters from Reel, an actress who ends up working on the film in this book, has Lupus, and I thought Ryan handled that chronic illness with the same respect and care.

Filled with outstanding writing, authentically messy characters, and a second chance romance that had my whole heart, I can’t recommend this book highly enough.

💍 Review - MARRIED WITH BENEFITS 💍

Author - Ellie Palmer

Pub Date - 7/21/2026

What a delightful read this was! I loved both main characters and thought the premise of the story was such a fresh take on the marriage of convenience trope.

Lainey Davis really wants to leave her small hometown. Unfortunately, every dime she has goes to paying for her expensive prescription migraine medicine.

Elliot Hodge has just inherited the land where Lainey house sits. At first he’s annoyed that Lainey, by way of squatter’s rights, owns the house on his property, but when he learns of her migraines and insurance woes, he proposes marriage - he’ll put her on his health insurance which is much better than hers, and in exchange, she’ll let him buy her out.

Because most of the property is in need of serious repairs, Elliot and Lainey move in together and then work side-by-side to fix the place up. All of the sudden, what began as fake starts to feel all too real.

I adored both Lainey and Elliot. Lainey is an artist and a whirlwind of chaos and disorder, but she also has a strong sense of independence and resourcefulness. She has had to get creative to make ends meet, but she’s making it work.

Elliot is her total opposite in most ways and is frankly alarmed by some of the things she does to make ends meet, but at the same time, he can’t help but be charmed by her and impressed with her sense of independence.

The dynamic between them was a fun one and I thought they had fantastic chemistry.

The book is filled with tension, hilarious banter and endless shenanigans as these two work together and grow closer, but it also has some emotional depth as both characters are on journeys of personal growth.

Highly recommend this one for fans of:

I was thrilled to receive these stunning paperback editions of the first three books of the Ever Seas series by L.J Andrews. For those who are interested in these, the first two books are already available in paperback and on August 11, 2026, book 3 will also be available on paperback. All ahead of the October 6, 2026 hardcover release of book 4, The Stolen Crown.

I’ve been wanting to read this series for so long, so I dove into the first book as soon as I received it. I’m about halfway through and I’m obsessed!

I don’t want to spoil the whole series, so I’ve just included the synopsis of the first book.

The Ever King synopsis:

They stole his crown, so he stole their daughter…

For years Erik, the scarred king of the Ever Kingdom, has thought of nothing but vengeance against the man who killed his father and trapped him beneath the waves, making him a prisoner in his own realm.

Until his enemy’s daughter unintentionally breaks the chains on the Ever, and Erik makes her the unwitting pawn in his vicious game of revenge.

She’s innocent. He’s vicious.

But he will take back what he lost, no matter the price. Unless she steals his heart first.

Welcome to the passionate world of the Ever Kingdom where pirates, sirens, and fae collide with Vikings in a dark fantasy romance between a villain and the innocent princess who holds his heart.

💍 Review - NOT THAT KIND OF PROPOSAL 💍

Gracie works as a wedding planner at Larkwood Estate and she also lives in a cottage on the property, courtesy of the kindly owner of the estate. When the owner passes away, she leaves Larkwood to her grandson, Jude, a divorce attorney who has zero interest in keeping the estate, much less carrying on with the wedding planning tradition. After a meet cute that turns contentious as soon as they realize the awkward position they are in, Jude agrees to give Gracie the summer to convince him to change his mind. Even more awkward is that she will be planning her ex’s wedding while doing so.

I love a good opposites-attract romance and what could be more opposite than a wedding planner and a divorce attorney! I was rooting for Gracie and Jude from their very first meeting, which actually takes place at Jude’s grandmother’s funeral. They just immediately have this electric chemistry and that connection persists, even when they are at odds over Larkwood, which gives the reader pages and pages of amazing banter to swoon over.

I love that Gracie is able to get Jude to actually take part in the wedding planning process, which leads to so many hilarious moments between the two of them.

Like Gracie, I was super annoyed at Jude for being so vague about why he didn’t want to keep the property or do weddings there anymore, but I fell hard for him when we finally learn why he’s so determined to do things his way. I don’t want to spoil anything here, but I loved how the author wove this more sensitive topic into this otherwise fun and light-hearted read.

I read the e-arc and then re-read on audio and think both formats are fabulous. Marie Smith and Will Kirk narrate the audiobook and were just a joy to listen to, the way they bring Jude and Gracie to life!

Thanks for the free book @berkleyromance #BerkleyPartner #Berkley

This gorgeous new deluxe paperback edition of Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman is available as of today. It is releasing a few months ahead of the upcoming movie sequel, Practical Magic 2.

My photos don’t really do it justice, but this deluxe edition featured purple sprayed edges with “Fall In Love Whenever You Can” stenciled on them. It also features a celestial themed cover with beautiful foil detailing.

I think most are familiar with this book and its popular movie, but for those who aren’t, I’ve included the synopsis below.

🔮 Synopsis:🔮

The Owens sisters confront the challenges of life and love in this bewitching novel from New York Times bestselling author Alice Hoffman.

For more than two hundred years, the Owens women have been blamed for everything that has gone wrong in their Massachusetts town. Gillian and Sally have endured that fate as well: as children, the sisters were forever outsiders, taunted, talked about, pointed at. Their elderly aunts almost seemed to encourage the whispers of witchery, with their musty house and their exotic concoctions and their crowd of black cats. But all Gillian and Sally wanted was to escape.

One will do so by marrying, the other by running away. But the bonds they share will bring them back—almost as if by magic...

🧑‍🍳 REVIEW - YES, CHEF 🧑‍🍳

Author - Grace Reilly

Pub Date - 7/21/26

This was such a fun read! It basically has everything I look for in a spicy summer romance. It has just the right balance of tension, chemistry, banter, and steam, but with the added layer of emotional depth as both main characters are trying to prove themselves, both to themselves and to those who doubt them.

Jack is a chef working at an elite NYC restaurant, until he has a very public meltdown that gets him fired. Poppy is the daughter of the restaurant owner and she also happens to be a popular social media influencer. When she is publicly dumped the same night Jack gets fired, Poppy decides it’s time to get away. She’s tired of her family belittling her career choice.

When Jack returns to his Florida hometown to deal with a restaurant he has inherited from his mentor, Poppy hatches a plan where she and Jack will work together to get the restaurant up and running, with him handling the actual restaurant aspects while she promotes Jack and the restaurant on social media. Jack is game, but only if Poppy will also learn the ins and outs of the restaurant side of things as well, including taking cooking lessons from him.

I loved the chemistry between Jack and Poppy. He’s grumpy, while she’s pure sunshine, and even though they push each other’s buttons, they eventually start to realize that they make a pretty good team. I thought their banter was so fun, but the slow burn and the tension between them was absolutely fantastic!

In addition to the romance, I found so much more to enjoy about this book. I thought Jack’s grief journey as he mourns his mentor was handled really well. I was also really into Poppy’s journey and loved watching her grow and figure out what she really wants out of life.

Samantha Summers and Troy Duran narrate the audiobook and I really enjoyed both of these narrators and the life they infused into the characters. They perfectly captured the emotionns and overall vibe of the book.

🤠 REVIEW - TETHERED LOVE 🤠 Author - Ann Einerson 🤠 REVIEW - TETHERED LOVE 🤠

Thanks so much to @authoranneinerson for the gifted e-arc!

Tethered Love is the third book in the Silver Saddle Ranch series. It’s a spicy cowboy romance that follows Heath, a sexy but grumpy cowboy, and Charlie, who is Heath’s sister’s best friend and the woman who constantly gets under his skin with her sassy banter.

Heath has secretly yearned for a romance with Charlie for years, and when the two of them are at a wedding and get caught up in the moment, a steamy one night stand ensues. It’s meant to be a one and done, no strings attached, but Charlie ends up pregnant. Now, I sometimes struggle with the accidental pregnancy trope, but I think it’s very well written in this story so I was on board with it.

I already found Heath very endearing, even with all his grumpiness, but I fell hard for him when he immediately steps up to take responsibility. He wants to marry Charlie, but will do whatever he can to be there for her and the baby no matter what. When Charlie ultimately agrees to what starts as a marriage of convenience, I loved watching Heath’s transformation from the resident grumpy cowboy to the sweetest, most caring husband and dad-to-be. So sweet!

Charlie has some financial debt that she is trying to pay off and she doesn’t have great health insurance, which she already struggled with because of her Type I Diabetes. Now add a pregnancy to it and she really needs better insurance. This was why she originally agrees to Heath’s proposal, to relieve some of the financial burden. I found Charlie to be such a sweet and fun character, and I adored her wonderful relationship with her Grams. Watching Charlie take care of the woman who has always cared for her made me want the best for Charlie so I was thrilled to watch her relationship with Heath evolve into something truly lovely, a relationship filled with love, emotional support, trust, and everything they both deserved so much.

I really enjoyed this & recommend it for fans of:

Small town
Accidental pregnancy
Age gap

Marriage of convenience
