Weekly Recap #56: Week of 6/3 – 6/9

It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

This week has been a little off kilter for me because it started off with a mandatory training session that forced me to get up extra early on a Monday morning and drive an hour to the training center when my morning commute is usually 10 minutes.  That was the worst, of course, but they did compensate for that misery a bit by serving us a delicious breakfast  before the training started.  I can be very forgiving when bacon, eggs, french toast, and fresh fruit are involved, lol.  The training did eat up a lot of my time though so I spent most of the rest of the week playing catch up.  Not fun but by the time I left on Friday, I was back on track, so yay!

Not too much else has been going on.  My son finished all of his testing last week and will graduate from elementary school this Friday.  I can’t believe I’m going to have a middle schooler on my hands.  Where does the time go? I still remember his first day of preschool!

I had a pretty good reading week too.  I finally (two weeks late!) finished the last of my May ARCs, Furyborn, and will review that this week.  I have some mixed feelings about it but enjoyed it overall.  I also finished one of my June ARCs and got started on another.  And thanks to my longer commute this week, I also managed to finish A Man Called Ove, which had been on my TBR for two years.  This week will be mostly devoted to my June ARCs but I am hoping to get through A Boy Made of Blocks, which is another that has been on my TBR for too long.

I also apologize for lagging behind on my blog hopping and replying to comments.  I knew I would fall behind with my work schedule but had planned to get caught up on Saturday since there was a 90% chance of stormy weather all day that day.  When I woke up though, the sun was shining and it was gorgeous outside and I ended up spending nearly all day and evening outside instead of at my computer.  I hope to get mostly caught up today though since the rain that missed us yesterday is supposed to be here all day today.

I think that’s it for me. I hope everyone else has a great week! 🙂

Weekly Recap #55: Week of 5/27 – 6/2

It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

It has been another pretty quiet week here.  My son has less than two weeks of school left so we’ve spent much of our time in the afternoons and evenings reviewing to make sure he’s ready for his end-of-year tests.  The school district seems to have gone standardized test crazy this year though because I swear he’s already taken at least 30 of these tests throughout the year. Feels like more test taking was going on than actual teaching, which frustrates me as a parent.  How is my kid supposed to learn anything if every couple of weeks he has to stop and take a “district assessment” test.  Ugh, anyway, I’ll shut up about that now before my blood pressure goes up, lol.

Is anyone in a weather pattern where it’s hot, sunny, and near 100% humidity every day of the week but then once the weekend gets here, the skies open up and it pours rain both days.  Yeah, that’s what we’ve had for the third week in a row.  I know I wanted it to warm up, but the endless rain was not part of my wish.  It has been good for my reading but not so great for all of my other weekend plans.  Really hoping there’s a change soon because I just want to be able to sit on my deck with a book and a glass of wine.  We’re supposed to take my son to see SOLO today and I just don’t even want to go out in this mess.

Hmmm, what else?  Oh! After three weeks of putting it on my ‘What I’m Reading’ list, I finally did start Furyborn yesterday.  I’m not too far in yet, but it’s pretty interesting so far.  I also checked the audiobook for A Man Called Ove out of the library yesterday.  I also own a copy of the book but I have a two-hour commute tomorrow for a training class for work so decided I’d try an audiobook in the car.  I started it last night before bed and wow, that man is so crotchety.  The image I was getting in my head as I was listening was of Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory if he was an old man, lol.  Anyway, it’s good so far too so hopefully that means I’m in for a good reading week.  Yesterday I finished The Death of Mrs. Westaway, which was my first Ruth Ware read.  I should have my review for that up tomorrow.

Lastly, I do have a giveaway running on the site as part of a blog tour I participated in.  If you’re in the U.S. and are interested in receiving an ARC of the super creepy Baby Teeth, I have 3 to give away so be sure to enter HERE.  Apologies to all of my non-U.S. visitors but the publisher shipped the ARCs directly to me and, after pricing the shipping from here to various countries, I determined that I just can’t afford to ship them internationally as much as I wish I could 🙁

I think that’s it for me. I hope everyone else has a great week! 🙂

Weekly Recap #54: Week of 5/20 – 5/26

It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

It was another pretty quiet week for me, a little boring, but after all of the deadlines, etc. that I dealt with up through the end of April, I’ll gladly take a few quiet weeks to recharge my batteries.  I’m also really looking forward to our long holiday weekend.  They’re calling for rain everyday but oh well, if it rains, that just means I’ll have 3 days to relax and get some reading and blogging done indoors.

On the blog, I think I’ve finished up all of the GDPR stuff.  Or let’s just say I’ve given up on it at this point and am hoping for the best.  One of the changes regarding the privacy policy button made the site glitchy for me as a logged in user for a few days and I wasn’t able to reply to any of your comments.  I finally figured out what was causing it and turned it back off but now I think I need to find something else to use there.  The joys of GDPR, lol.

Reading wise, I finished a few books this past week but with the exception of Legendary, most of them were not books I had originally planned to read.  Mood reading and poor planning strikes again!  I had misplaced my planner for a few weeks and forgot that I had two blog tours scheduled for the end of May so I had to set aside my planned reading and dive into LikeL1k3 and Baby Teeth asap.  LikeL1k3 was great and there are several giveaways for that book on my blog tour post so be sure to check that out if you haven’t already.

I think that’s about it for me. Like I said, quiet, boring week.  I hope everyone else has a great week! 🙂

Weekly Recap #53: Week of 5/13 – 5/19

It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

It’s another one of those weeks where I’m just sitting here trying to remember what I did this week and am coming up empty-handed.  I know I was a functioning adult but that’s pretty much all I’ve got, lol. No soccer, no work deadlines, but not much reading either so who knows what I did with my time?  I did binge watch season one of Netflix’s Lost in Space remake, so there’s that.  That show is fantastic, by the way. I highly recommend it! I also found out that my current favorite TV show, Marvel: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., has been renewed for a sixth season.  It will only be 13 episodes and won’t air until Summer 2019 but I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to those characters so I’ll take what I can get at this point.

Reading wise, I did read Dean Koontz’s The Crooked Staircase this week, but didn’t enjoy it so I won’t be writing a full review for it.  It’s the third book in a series and I hadn’t read the first two yet, so unfortunately didn’t connect with the main character at all and just wasn’t a big fan of the writing style.  Too much focus on specifics about things I didn’t care about, like what specific make/model of gun everyone was using, what specific brand of pepper spray, etc.  It didn’t feel like much of anything happened in the book and I found myself skimming a lot. Then it ended on a cliffhanger, which just made the whole book feel like filler or just a bridge to the real action, which will obviously take place in the fourth book.  Readers who are already invested in the series will probably enjoy it, but didn’t and have no interest in continuing the series.

I also had to switch up what books I’m planning to read because I forgot I’m taking part in a blog tour for Jay Kristoff’s LIFEL1K3 on Friday.  That book needs to move to the front of the line, so I’m pushing Furyborn back a few days and then plan to read Legendary too.

What I really did this week will probably come to me as soon as I publish this post, but for now, I think that’s about it for me.  I hope everyone has a wonderful week!

ETA:  I knew I would remember as soon as I hit publish….I spent almost all of my free time this week trying to figure out how to make sure my blog is GDPR compliant.  I still have no idea if I’ve done everything I need to do, but I’m too tired of thinking about it to do anything more at this point.

Weekly Recap #52: Week of 5/6 – 5/12

It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

First of all, let me say Happy Mother’s Day to all of the moms who are celebrating today!  My mom is visiting today, so I’ll be joining her for lunch and a movie as soon as I finish writing up this post.  My son chose our Mother’s Day activities so we will be seeing Avengers: Infinity War today.  Probably not what I would have picked for Mother’s Day but oh well, it should be entertaining anyway, lol.

This week started out slow but then went a bit off the rails for me and my family.  We won our last soccer game of the season on Tuesday night but then found out Friday morning that playoffs started the next morning, with our playoff game being at 10a.m.  Normally we have some time in between the last games and the playoffs so no one was expecting the schedule to come out so quickly and for the games to start the next day.  Needless to say, we hadn’t practiced at all going into the game on Saturday.  Even better than that was that our coach had to work and couldn’t even be at the game.  My husband and another parent stepped up and coached the team so that we at least didn’t have to forfeit.  The game ended up being one of the most intense kids’ soccer games I’ve ever watched.  We were tied 0-0 going into the 4th quarter, then with 2 minutes left on the clock, we finally scored a goal.  We thought we had it in the bag then, but with 45 seconds left in the game, the other team tied it up.  Because it was a playoff game, it couldn’t end with a tie, however, so the refs told us that we would play two bonus quarters, 5 minutes each.  At the end of those, we were still tied, so then we played a sudden death shoot out.  After a round of that, we were still tied!  Finally, during the second shoot out round, the other team scored on our goalie and the game ended.  Our season may be over, but I could not be prouder of this group of kids.  They did not go down without a fight.  And it was over 90 degrees and brutally sunny while they were playing so it was all the more impressive since I was melting into a puddle in my chair just watching them.

Aside from the soccer drama, not much else has gone on here.  Work, home, read, watch a little TV.  I’ve actually spent way too much time watching the TV renewals and cancellations this week and stressing out about whether or not Marvel: Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be renewed.  As of my typing up this post, S.H.I.E.L.D. is the only show ABC hasn’t made a decision on yet so I’m on pins and needles about that.  This week’s episode was so fantastic too!  Any Philinda shippers out there?!  OMG!

On that note, I think that’s about it for me.  I hope everyone has a wonderful week!

Weekly Recap #50: Week of 4/22 – 4/28

It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

Now that my tax deadlines have passed, life is getting back to a more normal pace, so I’m excited about that.  Work was so quiet this past week because most of the CPAs were on vacation, so quiet in fact that I was able to squeeze in an extra book this week that I wasn’t planning to read.  I listened to the audiobook of Geekerella, which was a super cute read, by the way.

This week my top reading priority if Song of Blood and Stone as I’m on the blog tour for this book and my turn comes up this Friday.  I meant to read it this weekend but got so engrossed in I Stop Somewhere that I couldn’t put that one down long enough to jump over to my tour book.

Not too much else has been going on.  I tried to get caught up on my blog visits this week.  If I missed you though, yell at me so I can stop by.  I have to confess that I had gotten so far behind as my deadline got closer that I ended up losing track of who I had visited and who I hadn’t. I suffer from C.R.S. (Can’t Remember Shit).

Outside of reading and blogging, about the only other exciting thing I can remember that happened was that The 100 finally came back.  I feel like I’ve been waiting for that show to come back for ages so it was fantastic to finally have a new episode to watch.  I watched that and then I binge watched season 1 of the Netflix remake of One Day at a Time.  I liked that show a lot more than I was expecting to and Rita Moreno is absolutely hilarious in it.

I think that’s about it for me.  I hope everyone has a wonderful week!

Weekly Recap #49: Week of 4/15 – 4/21

It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

I guess the big news of the week is obviously that I made it through the tax deadline that has had me working 6 day weeks for so many months!  It was exhausting and the IRS experienced an outage on deadline day that made it so we couldn’t check to see if our clients’ returns had actually been accepted, so that didn’t exactly help, but they ended up giving everyone a one-day extension and everything worked out in the end.  Woo Hoo!  We had our after-tax party on Friday night, which is always a lot of fun, and I’ve spent most of the rest of the week catching up on sleep, reading, and watching TV.  I did start getting caught up on my blog visits too, so if I haven’t made it to you yet, I’ll be there soon!

Aside from work, soccer once again dominated my week.  After our 0-4 loss last weekend, we bounced back on Monday night was a 1-1 tie against the toughest team in their league.  Our team had never won or tied against them before, so the tie this week felt like a victory!  We then went on to win our game yesterday 1-0 in another nail biter.  The team is looking better and better, and are passing more, so this passionate soccer mom is much more content than she was last weekend, lol.

I didn’t get nearly as much reading done this week as I would have liked, but Girl Made of Stars was the standout of what I did read.  I can’t wait to write and post my review for that one.  It was a super emotional read that made me shed a few tears on more than one occasion.

I think that’s about it for me.  I hope everyone has a wonderful week!

Weekly Recap #48: Week of 4/8 – 4/14

It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

It has been yet another of those oh-so-exciting weeks where I worked six days and then sat around like a lump or else fell asleep the rest of the time.  Deadline is Tuesday though so yay, I’m almost at the finish line!

Aside from work, the main focus of my week has been soccer and my son’s science fair project.  My son’s new team got off to a great start with a 7-0 victory in their first game, but then sadly lost the second game 4-0.  I’m not even sure what happened to them in the second game but they didn’t even look like the same team.  I tend to be a pretty passionate soccer mom so that was pretty frustrating, especially since they only took one shot on goal the entire game.  I kept my cool though, lol (although once I ride herd on him to wrap up his science project today, my son will be outside practicing more and inside playing video games less from this point forward.).

Soccer loss aside, it was nice to be able to get outside and enjoy the warm weather and get a little sun.  It was in the 80’s here yesterday so within the span of a week, we’ve gone from snow on the ground to flip flop weather!  I’m really hoping the warm weather is here to stay because I’m dying to spend some quality reading time out on my deck.

I think that’s about it for me.  I hope everyone has a wonderful week!

Weekly Recap #47: Week of 4/1 – 4/7

It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

Another quick write up for me today because I have reviews to write or else I won’t have any posts going up this week, lol.  Thank goodness I’m entering my last 6-day work week of the year! I’ve decided I’m just too old to work that many days in a row.

Aside from work, not too much else happened, nothing that I can remember anyway.  I did celebrate my 2-year blogoversary though and am hosting a giveaway for a free book from The Book Depository.  It ends tonight so make sure to enter if you haven’t already.  There’s a link on the front page of my site.

I forgot to mention it in last week’s wrap up, but I did complete the Take Control of Your TBR Challenge in March.  I managed to get 10 pre-March 1 books off of my TBR, which I was very happy about.  The Belles, which I’m reviewing tomorrow on the blog, is the final book that I read for that challenge, so once that review posts, I’ll be back to reviewing the ARCs that I have coming up.  I apparently went request happy again on Netgalley because I have a bunch of April/May ARCs to get through. I don’t think I’ll be touching my backlist again until June.  Oops!

I think that’s it for me for now.  I hope everyone has a wonderful week!

Weekly Recap #46: Week of 3/25 – 3/31

It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

Happy Easter to all who are celebrating today!  I’m keeping it short and sweet today because my 6-day work weeks have me so behind on everything, both on and off the blog.  I need to get caught up on blog comments and on my reviews so that I actually have something to post next week.  I’m quite literally counting down the days until our deadline and the freedom that will follow!

I didn’t get much reading done this week, but I did celebrate my 2-year blogoversary.  Thanks for all of the blogoversary wishes from those who have already seen my post.  There’s a giveaway for a free book so make sure you check that out if you haven’t already.  I still can’t believe it has been two years already!

The only other exciting thing that happened was that after nearly a year of trying, I finally managed to score a couple of tickets to Springsteen on Broadway.  He extended his show’s run a fourth time and I was finally lucky enough to get one of those elusive verified fan codes and have the opportunity to buy tickets.  I won’t be going until October but Springsteen is my favorite musician so I really can’t wait. I’ll also finally be seeing Hamilton that week so needless to say I’m broke, but extra Happy Birthday to me this year!

I think that’s it for me for now.  I hope everyone has a wonderful week!
