Can’t Wait Wednesday – GREAT OR NOTHING by Joy McCullough, Caroline Tung Richmond, Tess Sharpe & Jessica Spotswood

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, which encourages fellow bloggers to spotlight upcoming releases that we’re excited about.  It is a meme that I have  loved participating in since I first started blogging, but as Jill is no longer actively posting, from now on I’ll be linking to Can’t Wait Wednesday, hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings, which is a spinoff of the original WoW meme.

My selection for this week is GREAT OR NOTHING by Joy McCullough, Caroline Tung Richmond, Tess Sharpe & Jessica Spotswood. I’m not familiar with any of these authors but this book combines my love of Little Women, retelling, and WWII historical fiction so it sounds like a perfect fit for me. 🙂

Publication Date:  March 8, 2022 by Delacorte

From Goodreads:

A reimagining of Little Women set in the spring of 1942, when the United States is suddenly embroiled in the second World War, this story, told from each March sister’s point of view, is one of grief, love, and self-discovery.

In the spring of 1942, the United States is reeling from the attack on Pearl Harbor. While the US starts sending troops to the front, the March family of Concord, Massachusetts grieves their own enormous loss: the death of their daughter, Beth.

Under the strain of their grief, Beth’s remaining sisters fracture, each going their own way with Jo nursing her wounds and building planes in Boston, Meg holding down the home front with Marmee, and Amy living a secret life as a Red Cross volunteer in London–the same city where one Mr. Theodore Laurence is stationed as an army pilot.

Each March sister’s point of view is written by a separate author, three in prose and Beth’s in verse, still holding the family together from beyond the grave. Woven together, these threads tell a story of finding one’s way in a world undergoing catastrophic change.

I love retellings and I love WWII historical fiction. I haven’t read Little Women yet, but I’m already interested in this book!

I am intrigued by the authors involved (will they each pen one of the sister’s POVs?) It’s a great time period they selected and I like that they are keeping it set during a war. I feel like that’s an important aspect of the original story.
