Top Ten Tuesday – My Favorite Places to Read

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is My Favorite Places to Read.  I feel like I’ve done this topic before but couldn’t find a post anywhere.  Maybe I just like to think about all of the places I like to read a lot.  Anyway, whatever the reason, I’m doing the topic as is and sharing my favorite reading spots.

My Favorite Places to Read

1. Library/Home Office – This is my favorite room in my house.  It has lots of natural light and a big comfy chair, perfect for reading.  This is my absolute favorite spot to read in.

2.  Bed – I have trouble sleeping at night so I always look to a book to help me relax, wind down, and fall asleep.  Apparently I’m all about being cozy because I love to pile on the blankets, a big fluffy comforter, and lots of pillows when I read in bed.

3.  Lunch – I don’t really have a specific location tied to this one, but wherever I sit down to eat lunch, especially during the work week, I love to have a book with me.  Having that time to read in the middle of the day is just as important to me as stopping to actually eat.

4.  Public Transportation – Whether it’s a plane, train, subway, or even just riding in the car (or even driving if I have an audiobook), reading is my favorite way to pass this otherwise dead time.

5. Waiting Rooms – Same as above honestly. It’s a great way to pass the time while you’re stuck somewhere, and it also helps if I’m feeling anxious about whoever I’m meeting with.

6. Beach or Pool – I actually get bored and want to leave if I go to the beach or pool and don’t have anything to read.

7.  Outside on my Deck – Certain times of the year are better than others for this, but when the weather is comfortable, I love to sit outside on the deck and read.  I live in a really quiet neighborhood so it’s very peaceful and relaxing, with just the sounds of birds chirping in the background.

8.  Kitchen – This probably sounds like a weird choice, but the kitchen has become one of the main places where I listen to audiobooks.  I love to listen to them while I’m cooking, cleaning, doing dishes, etc.

9. Laundry Room – Along similar lines, I listen to a lot of audiobooks while doing chores related to laundry – sorting, folding, ironing, etc.  It’s such a lovely way to make a tedious chore so much more enjoyable.

10. Vacation – Lastly, wherever I happen to be traveling on vacation is automatically a favorite place to read.  The exact location doesn’t matter because for me, half of the point of vacation is so that I can read more, lol.

We have so many of these in common! I loved reading during my lunch break at my last job. It was an hour long and I’d never had that much free time during work before, so books because a great way to fill it!

Exactly! And I wasn’t the biggest fan of eating with my coworkers since all we did was talk about work. Reading was my escape from work for an hour.

No 6 speaks to me Suzanne. I find the beach especially to be incredibly boring and a good book is the only way I can get through it. I love audiobooks for all the places you can read, but especially when I am working out. So I forgot I am working out lol

Pre-pandemic I spent way too much time on public transportation not to take the opportunity to read. That’s the bulk of my reading during the work week. I only really read in my chair at home, but outside of my home, anything is game – except the car. I get motion sickness.

I probably spend 90 percent of my reading time reading in bed, lol. I’m not very good at concentrating outside my house, so waiting rooms, the car or even outside are a little iffy for me. But I love all the places you listen to audio! I need to get in that habit someday😁

I’m practically addicted to audiobooks now. Even when I have a paper or e-copy, I still love to listen along as I’m reading.

Great list! I still haven’t figured out how to listen to audiobooks while doing lots of other things at the same time cos my attention tends to stray very quickly 😂 One day… I’ll master it one day lol! I also read in bed to wind down and it always feels so weird when I don’t get to read before sleeping.

Good list! I especially agree with you about needing a book to read at lunchtime. Otherwise, what’s the point? ;D

We have a lot of places in common. I was not thinking about lunch, but I might start picking up an audio book or reading a chapter or two while I eat.

I have only recently discovered the love of audio books through my library’s Hoopla app, and now I also “read” while doing laundry!! I love it and wish I had discovered it earlier!

I like reading on vacation too. Best of both worlds. 🙂 And same with outside on a patio or deck. Your library/ home office sounds nice.

I agree with you, especially if I’m cooking something that I know the recipe well enough that I’m pretty much on autopilot anyway.

This is so relatable! I can’t wait to have my own home office. Our house is too small now and my BF needs it more, so he has the home office and I read on the couch in the living.

I also “read” a lot in the car. Audiobooks 🙂

I hope you’ll be able to get your office soon. I really love having my own special place to keep my books and to read, of course. 🙂

I must confess that audiobooks are a godsend for doing chores in a very enjoyable way! So the laundry room or the kitchen are places where I read books too!

    • Suzanne
      Suzanne says:

They really are! I still have certain chores that I hate, but having an audiobook to listen to definitely makes the chores less tedious.

These are great. We have plenty in common. Not commuting to work and getting to read on the way or listen to audiobooks is something I miss terribly now, post-Covid, I mostly work from home. For some reason, I can never really settle into an audiobook unless I’m out of the house. When I’m doing chores or working in the kitchen, I mostly listen to podcasts.
