Weekly Recap #128: Week of 10/27 – 11/2

It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

This past week started out on a quiet and relaxing note but went off the rails about midweek when I got a phone call from my son’s Principal.  I won’t go into all of the gory details, but it involved a fight he got in the middle of at school between his girlfriend and some ‘Mean Girl’ type. While discussing his behavior with him and digging a little deeper into what he has been up to lately overall, I discovered that he had been lying to me for several days about doing his homework and about several other things.  Needless to say, blogging took a backseat to getting him back on track with his school work and having the same conversation for what feels like the hundredth time about fighting other people’s battles and about how lying leads to mistrust, which in turn, leads to him having less freedom and privileges.  I guess one of these days, those lessons will finally sink in.  The worst part of this is that he’s only just turned 12.  We haven’t even officially hit the teen years yet. I’m really hoping he’s getting it out of his system early and that this isn’t going to continue for years and years.  Probably wishful thinking, but a mom can dream, right?

Anyway, apologies to all whose posts I missed.  I’m so far behind on blog hopping right now that I’ll probably just start with fresh posts and move forward. Otherwise I’m going to end up in a hole I can’t get out of.  I also only finished one book this week, Scythe by Neal Shusterman. That one was recommended to me by my son and it was amazing. I’m glad I already have a copy of the next book in the series because I can’t wait to continue the story.

Anyway, I think that’s pretty much it for me.  Have a great week, everyone!

Oh no, hun. Your son is definitely more important so forget blogging until he’s on track. I really hope he grows out of this stage, but… Knowing how I was and how I’ve seen others, the lying could continue. The thing is, they get so good at it. I became so good at lying to my mom, that I wouldn’t even have to think how to lie. It would just naturally come out, even if she would call me out on it, I already had a back up one. It’s crazy.
That picture at the bottom, I relate especially for this weekend. I read 2 full books on Saturday and read the half of another one. Thankfully the hubby wasn’t here so I was able to read without stopping lol

That’s what I’m really afraid of with the lying. Right now he’s not very good at it, but I could definitely see him getting more and more skilled at it, especially as he talks to his friends and learns tricks from them.

I’m excited to get to The Tattooist of Auschwitz. I read the author’s most recent book and loved it and from what I hear, this one is supposed to be even better.

I never really had trouble with my daughter, EXCEPT for a short period in the beginning of middle school (6th) grade. It’s a tough time period for everyone involved. Hang in there, mom, and ((HUGS))

Ha Suzanne a mom’s work never ends! And I think what you are doing now will spare you more serious problems later. Hopefully he works it out of his system soon enough. Book wise I am busy reading The Tattooist of Auschwitz (or rather listening to) and The Guinevere Deception is on my list too! Hope next week will go smoother!

Life gets in the way of this blogging thing, right? You sound like you handled the situation perfectly, Suzanne. The books you’re stacking the shelves with look awesome. I’ll look forward to your reviews. I’m currently finishing my first Jojo Moyes novel, Still Me. HA! That random cartoon share is perfect!!

It’s a difficult time for children. He’s not a teen, neither is he a child and suddenly hormones are beginning to kick in and allll the rules appear to be different. I do recall when I was a teacher, one of my mothers decided to lie to her child for a whole week about her sandwiches in her lunchbox… what she was allowed to watch on TV… what time she was going to bed… until her daughter in tears pleaded for it to stop. I wouldn’t suggest you try it now, but it might be something to consider down the line if the current conversations don’t appear to be going in – people find it difficult to understand just how undermining lying is until they’re on the receiving end. In the meantime, I hope the coming week is an easier one!

That’s a really interesting strategy. If the lying continues, I may have to consider it. What I find interesting about him is that he gets super upset when he realizes we don’t trust him because of the lies, but then a few days later, he’ll lie again.

Aww school/kid/girlfriend stuff can be tough lol. I say that sort of facetiously but I know it’s not funny, and I sympathize. I have two girls so drama is not unheard of! Good luck and hopefully it’s just a one- off thing. It’s amazing the stuff we don’t know is going on though sometimes!

I’ve heard good things about Scythe.

Sorry about everything going on with your son. Hopefully you’re right and he’ll learn all these things now and it won’t be so bad when he’s a teen! You never know!!

I loved Scythe too. I still need to get my hands on Thunderhead.

    Love the Totally Random cartoon.

Oh boy, middle school is such a rough time. For boys and girls alike. Hopefully it’s like you said and he’s getting this out of his system early and it’s not that this is the start of a pattern. I know this is a time of them learning right and wrong and pushing boundaries, but that doesn’t make it any easier!

As for blogging I sometimes find I have to do the same thing. It is way too overwhelming to consider catching up so I just (unfortunately) hit delete on a lot of posts and start fresh.

Parenting isn’t easy and I love that you put your son first and your focus on him. Hopefully he will learn from this occasion and it won’t repeat again anytime soon or in the future… fingers crossed! As for your haul, An American Marriage is one I have too and need to read soon! And I have read The Tattooist of Auschwitz. It’s hard reading sometimes, but it is amazing.

Thank you. I’m really hoping he’ll grow out of it quickly. If not, the teen years are going to be a bear, lol. I’m excited to finally read The Tattooist of Auschwitz. I read the author’s latest, Cilka’s Journey, without realizing it was a sequel to The Tattooist of Auschwitz. Cilka’s Journey was a powerful read so I’m glad to hear the first book was as well.
