Weekly Recap #127: Week of 10/20 – 10/26

It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

First, I just want to say a big thanks to everyone who wished me a Happy Birthday. I took the day off from work and just had a quiet day filled with “me time,” which I think was exactly what I needed after the busy schedule I’ve had for so long.  So far I’ve only purchased one book with the gift cards my friends and family sent me, Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo, but I’m sure more will follow shortly.

The rest of the week was back to business as usual as my son prepared to play his first game with his new travel team.  That took place yesterday and unfortunately they didn’t win, but it was still a great game.  My son is still getting used to playing with this new group of kids, but he still played pretty well overall and he had fun, which is the most important thing.

On the reading front, it was a mixed bag for me. I ended up DNFing Life and Limb by Jennifer Roberson because it took me 4 days to get to the 8% mark. I just couldn’t get into the story at all. I’m having similar mixed results with Sisters of Shadow and Light, although I have managed to make it to the 40% mark.  My best read so far has been a backlist book, Slightly South of Simple by Kristy Woodson Harvey, which was just a delightful read about sisters and family.  I also started reading Scythe based on a recommendation from my son.  He hasn’t been reading much lately, so I decided a recommendation from him was important enough to reshuffle my TBR.  I’m hoping that it will be a bonding moment and that it will encourage him to get back into reading a bit.

Anyway, I think that’s pretty much it for me.  Have a great week, everyone!

Glad you had a relaxing birthday! I’ll be interested in reading your Ninth House review as from others I know this isn’t a book I can personally handle.

Birthdays are the best days ever, and I’m glad you had the chance to sit back and relax a little for your birthday. Me Time is very important for sure. I’ve been reading the same book for longer than normal, not because it’s not good, but it’s over 620 pages, and I keep getting involved in other projects.(lol) I’m glad you found something you could get into. Happy Sunday and sending some hugs your way! RO

Happy late birthday!!! I hope you had fun and enjoyed your “me time”. I’ve had Ellison’s novel for months in my kindle. I hope to pick it up soon! I’m jealous you got Of Curses & Kisses! I want that one so bad!

I’m listening to Ninth House right now and like it pretty well once I was started. oh no on Life and Limb because that’s next up for me. I have 3 other books at 60% I need to get back and finish too. I loved Scythe. I’m glad you had a day off – we all need it. My days are often too scheduled up. But there are so many things I want to do I just keep slotting it in until I am exhausted. I hope this week is even better for you and the Halloween shenanigans are fun.

Excuse me while I drool over your copy of Menon’s next release. I was quickly rejected. S&S is hit or miss for me, but I know the library will get it. Thank goodness it’s not a Macmillan book. LOL. I always take my birthday off as well. Even if it’s to do nothing. You should not have to work on your birthday. Glad to hear your son is having fun with his new team. That really is what’s important. I remember, my niece played from when she was 4 years old, rec and travel, but quit in HS because she wasn’t enjoying it due to the coaching. I hate when grownups ruin the game for the kids.

I was surprised but thrilled to get the Menon book. I agree about the grownups ruining the game for kids. Thankfully he has three coaches that he really seems to like.

Glad you had a relaxing birththday, Suzanne:)). I hope you both enjoy Scythe – and even if you don’t, it can be fun discussing and comparing reading experiences. Glad his football game went well and hope it’s the start of a good season. Have a great week.

Ninth House seems to be getting a lot of love. And I’ve heard good things about scythe too. That new Lisa Jewell book looks good too, I’ve become something of a fan of hers after reading a few of her other ones.

Glad you had a nice birthday (and Happy Birthday!)

I love book recommendations from my son. He’s the reason I’m currently working my way through The Kane Chronicles on audio. My Rick Riordan preferences tended to stay with the Olympians but he insisted I listen to the Kane books because they are his favourites… Who am I to argue? I hope you enjoy Sythe!
