Weekly Recap #124: Week of 9/29 – 10/5

It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

Another week, another blur of work, after school activities, and soccer.  I went into the week feeling like I had things under control, but then soccer playoffs happened.  We thought the County wouldn’t schedule them until the weekend to make sure most people could attend.  When we got the unexpected text from the coach Tuesday night saying that playoffs would start on Thursday night, all my plans for the week got thrown off kilter with unscheduled practices and an unplanned trip to the soccer fields.  On the bright side, even with our flaky coach and never having enough kids to play, we still managed to make it to the semi-final round where we then lost against the number 1 seeded team, 4-0.  The kids still looked good in that game and I was especially proud of the way my son played, but two of our three strikers didn’t show up and you just can’t win a game with only 1 striker.  So a disappointing end to the season, but I’m just glad it’s over at this point so that’s one less thing on my plate for a while.

Elsewhere in life, our garage door spring decided it would be a great time to break at 9:00pm last Sunday night.  Once we recovered from our near heart attacks because of the ridiculously loud sound it made, the three of us tried to lift the door together and couldn’t budge it.  My car was therefore trapped in there until we could find someone to come out and fix it so I worked from home on Monday.  We managed to get someone out pretty quickly to take care of it, but the most comical/frustrating part of it was how much more work I got done at home, even with the dog and the cat running around and all of the garage commotion, than I have since we switched to this open floor plan at work.  Go figure!

Reading and blogging were not all that great this week because of the distractions.  I did finish The Grace Year, which I’ll be reviewing tomorrow, but Cursed, the King Arthur retelling, ended up being a DNF for me. I just couldn’t get into it at all.  I ditched that and moved on to Bodies in the Library, a fun cozy mystery that I hope to finish today, and to How to Hang a Witch, a long-time backlist title that I’m listening to on audio.

Anyway, I think that’s pretty much it for me.  Have a great week, everyone!

Given the difficulties your team endured, I’d say the youngsters did you proud. And glad you now have a bit of a break to regather… And nope – I’m not remotely surprised that you got a lot more work done at home than in an open-plan office, having had the dubious experience of trying to work in one. I hope someone has a major rethink about that piece of nonsense – I thought all the productivity studies done had already proved beyond any doubt that they hammer workers’ concentration levels and cause a lot more fatigue and stress. I hope the coming week is a good one, Suzanne:)

Yes, I thought the same but I guess my employers didn’t do their research unfortunately. Thank you! Hope you have a great week as well.

OMG – how scary that sounds about the garage door opener!!! I know I would have been in a panic, but at least it happened while the car was inside and didn’t stop while your car was half in and half out, and thank goodness someone was able to resolve ti fairly quickly. Very cool about getting more stuff done working from home. Maybe this situation is a good one to push your boss into working from home full time?(lol) Hope this week is stress free! Happy Sunday and hugs, RO

I have to say I’m sort of glad neither one of kids wanted to be in sports, but of course then my daughter joined show choir and that took up my entire life for 7 years, lol. So I feel your pain. Looking forward to your review of The Grace Year!

Wow, your week sounds exhausting. Thankfully, the seasons is over. It sucks they didn’t win but at least got that far ahead.
I can’t imagine how scary it must have been to hear the spring break, especially so late! Glad it got fixed! And I get so much work done at home when I get out of school. I already talked to the director and told her that I preferred to do my stuff at home and she had no problem. So now I don’t have to stay until 3:30 to 4pm every day.
I was looking forward to Cursed! It sucks it wasn’t for you :/ I haven’t read How to Hang a Witch but I read and enjoyed Killing November!

I’ve had the garage door thing happen more than once. It’s not something to mess with yourself. It sounds like this week will be better with soccer well ended. Our weather just finally cooled off too. Any chance you can regularly work at home one day a week?

I’ll be reading The Grace Year shortly. I hope you enjoyed it. Happy reading!

That’s too bad your son’s team’s season ended like that, but I’m sure the break until the next team starts will be nice! Haha, I feel like if I told my office manager I couldn’t come to work because my car was trapped in the garage, she’d think I was lying!

LOL! That thought definitely crossed my mind when I had to call my boss and let her know. Thankfully she didn’t give me a hard time about it.

I can see why you are glad the soccer season is over. It seems like it was a mess from beginning to end. I am glad your son played well and hope he at least had fun. I am so glad no one was hurt when the spring broke on the garage door. My mother-in-law was standing right under her garage door getting something out of her trunk when the door fell on her shoulder because of a broken spring. I am sorry to hear Cursed didn’t work for you. I had high hopes for that one. 🙁 I hope you enjoy your new books! White’s book especially sounds good. I look forward to reading your thoughts on The Furies and Fireborne. Both are books I plan to read. Have a great week, Suzanne!

Well, how rude of your garage door to break and trap your car. That sounds really frustrating. I am glad it didn’t happen when any of you were near/using the door, though. I liked the How to Hang a Witch books. It’s wild to me, that they are based on the author’s family history.

That’s not much of a heads up with the playoff scheduling. Too bad the team didn’t progress but at least you’ll gain some time back! Crazy that you accomplished more at home (with distractions) that at the office. Maybe they’ll rethink that open floor plan and witch back at some point. I’m reading Twice in Blue Moon now. I’m only about 20% in but enjoying it so far.
