Weekly Recap #123: Week of 9/22 – 9/28

It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

All in all, not much happened this week.  The only thing that really stands out to me is that we’re in the middle of major renovations at work and have been switched to an open floor plan.  They took down a bunch of offices and replaced them with cubicles with frosted glass partitions.  I can’t really say that I’m a big fan of this so far either.  The partitions are short so I can see everyone else in my work area as well as everyone else who walks up and down the hallways.  It’s loud, distracting, and there’s no privacy at all.  The cubicles are also much smaller than what we had so there’s less workspace overall.  I don’t know if it’s an introvert thing or what but I found myself just mentally exhausted by the time I got home from work each day and craving alone time.

Aside from the work drama, soccer dominated the week.  We had our last three games of the regular season and playoffs will start this upcoming week.  We went 3-5 during the regular season, lost our final game 1-10, and I don’t think any of the kids are excited about the playoffs.  Our coach was the sister of one of the players and she constantly cancelled practice and didn’t even show up for two of our games and her mother had to coach in her place.  We’ve decided that we’re not doing this Parks and Rec soccer anymore and so I’m now researching travel teams, etc. to see what other options are out there.  The other options are way more expensive but we need real coaches and real training.

On a brighter note, the weather has been lovely. I should have been inside blog hopping all day yesterday but instead sat outside getting caught up on my reading.  I’ve finished all but one of my October 1 ARCs. I had been putting off reading Cursed because I saw so many mixed reviews for it, but I’m starting that today.  I also dove into my backlist again and finally started reading The Wrath and the Dawn, which I love. I can’t believe I left it sitting on my TBR for three years, lol.

Anyway, I think that’s pretty much it for me.  Have a great week, everyone!

Good luck with all the soccer stuff. I know when my niece was more serious about it, she did travel. Wow, you read all your October ARCs already. That’s fabulous! I only have 4 left, and am reading this week, and my total number of ARCs for the rest of the year 14. I am going to be reading a bunch more shelf books. I hope you end up enjoying Cursed.

I totally want to know your thoughts on The Furies and The Bodies in the Library!
The work drama sounds exhausting. Is this temporary?
Definitely do research on other teams. The coach sounds irresponsible, tbh.
I hope this week is good for you 🙂

I had my own office at my last job, and now I have a cubicle out on the main floor of the office. Everyone has to walk past my desk to get anywhere, so there’s always someone around, and my desk seems to be the place where everyone congregates, so it’s always loud even when I’m on the phone. That’s too bad that your son’s soccer coach kind of flaked out, that’s so unfair to the kids!

Those changes at work seem very stressful. As a fellow introvert, I quite enjoy my privacy even at work (I pretty much freak out when I’ve to answer to calls when someone is around). Those cubicles would make me panic…

That coach seems a bit irresponsible. I truly hope everything works out.

    Happy readings! 😉

Yeah, cubicles aren’t the greatest, I agree. I’ve always had a cubicle where I work but I’ve gotten used to all the noise and distractions. I’ve become really good at tuning out everything when I need to. I hope you adjust eventually!

I’ve seen a few studies that talk about how this open floor plan is a bad idea at work too. Hopefully I’ll get used to it since I don’t think it’s going away anytime soon.

No, unfortunately, we didn’t get any say at all and the decisions were made by the higher ups who don’t actually do the work that we do. I really hope that I’ll eventually get used to it.

Ugh, the work renovations don’t sound like a positive step. Seems like all the distractions would be counter-productive. So envious of your nicer weather! And I’ll be interested to see what you think of The Wrath & The Dawn. It’s been sitting on my shelf for a couple years now.

I just finished The Wrath and the Dawn tonight and really enjoyed it. I’m glad I’m not the only one who hasn’t read it yet, lol.

Well Suzanne I work in an open space sans cubicle and it is so tiring! At the end of the day I just want silence and nothing else! And you are lucky to have such lovely weather! Here it is extremely windy today!

Urg. I feel your pain regarding working in an open office – I remember working in an Accounts dept and we all worked in a general office. Not conducive when trying to concentrate on typing up rows of numbers… Studies have shown that open plan offices generally impact on productivity, so I’m guessing this is all about shoe-horning more people into a smaller space:(. The soccer situation is clearly unsatisfactory – best of luck with finding someone to coach the children.

I’ve read a few of those studies and I’m curious to see if our productivity goes down. I work for an accounting firm and our lives are very deadline oriented so it could become a problem.

Ugh, that is the worst soccer coach. I can’t imagine how frustrating it must be for the kids having a coach who doesn’t take their coaching seriously.

    • Suzanne
      Suzanne says:

Yeah, the kids are frustrated. They like her because she’s young and fun, but they also want to learn and win so her flaking out on them is very disappointing.

Blog hopping is hard when the weather is nice. I don’t want to be stuck inside either! That sucks about your work being changed to open plan. One of the things I like about my job is that when it’s slow, I’m completely alone. It’s distracting when people are constantly in your space.

    • Suzanne
      Suzanne says:

That’s exactly the way I prefer to be. I like having my own space where people just leave me alone unless I choose to go and interact with them. This new environment makes that impossible. Hopefully I’ll adjust to it, but right now I just dread going to work everyday.

My office is on the open side too, which, for the type of work we do can mean it is always loud. I know what you mean about it not being ideal, especially for those of us who are introverts. I am sorry to hear this soccer season wasn’t the best. I can understand your being disappointed with the coach. That not okay. I hope you are able to find a travel league that will work for you and your son–or another alternative. I wish them the best with playoffs. I hope you are enjoying your current reads! Have a great week!

  12. Suzanne
    Suzanne says:

Thanks, I really hope we can find a travel league that is reasonably priced so that he can have a better playing experience with a more competitive team.

I work in an open-plan office and we also ‘flexi desk’ rather than have an assigned desk. It took some getting used to but I’ve come to quite enjoy it. I work with an awesome bunch of people (mostly) and the banter keeps you going when the job is enough to bring you to your knees. I hope you settle into the changes soon… Being mentally exhausted by work every day is no fun!
