Weekly Recap #95: Week of 3/10 – 3/16

It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

This is one of those weeks where I’m sitting here trying to remember what happened each day and I’m coming up totally blank. The joys of working for an accounting firm, I guess. Life is a blur from January to April 15th, lol.  I think the highlight of the week was being so busy and so tired that my husband and I tried Instacart for our grocery shopping and DoorDash last night to order dinner from one of our favorite restaurants that doesn’t have its own delivery service.  I really loved both services, especially Instacart since I hate going grocery shopping.

Aside from that, the only thing that really stands out is soccer, soccer, soccer.  My son’s Parks and Rec season started this week and he is still attending the training sessions, so our schedule was extra busy.  He also has tryouts for his school team starting tomorrow, so every spare minute has been devoted to helping him be as ready as he possibly can.  We don’t know what his chances of making the team are since he’s only a 6th grader and will be trying out with 7th and 8th graders, but we figure it’s a good practice run for next year anyway so that he’ll know what to expect and will be more comfortable trying out when he has the best chance of making the team.  I’m proud of him for even trying out though. I was a wimp and never tried out for any kind of sport when I was in school, lol.

On the blogging/reading front, I think I have finally hit a wall in my fantasy reading.  I found myself getting especially impatient with the worldbuilding in Wicked Saints, which I actually set down yesterday in favor of Serious Moonlight, a YA contemporary.  I don’t think it’s an issue with Wicked Saints either; I think it’s just me.  I wanted a read in a world that was familiar and didn’t want to have to work to imagine another new fantasy world.  I don’t know if it’s because I’m just super tired from work or if my mood reading side is demanding a change, but you’ll notice below that I hauled more books than usual this week and not a single one of them is fantasy.

Anyway, I think that’s about it for me.  Have a great week, everyone!

I hope you love Wicked Saints. I hope to pick it back up soon since I know my issue was burnout and nothing to do with the actual book.

Good luck to your son. I hope he makes it, even if he will be trying out with 7th and 8th graders. *fingers crossed* I can’t wait to read your review of Sky Without Scars. It’s one of the retellings coming out this year that I can’t wait to get my hands on – even if I haven’t read Les Misérables.

    Happy readings!;)

Oh Suzanne yes accounting firms are so busy this time of the year! Now I get what you mean by hitting a wall with Fantasy. I began Nevernight by Jay Kristoff (on my shelf for a loong time now) but could not just get “in”. I too needed contemporary. Have a great week.

Instacart? There is such a thing lol? Hmmm… 🙂

Good luck to your son with the tryouts! Even if he doesn’t get it this year, like you said, he’ll get valuable experience for next year.

Serious Moonlight looks soo good. I want to try that author.

Yep, it’s a thing and it’s pretty cool. I don’t know that I would use it every week but it was nice to have the option since it saved me a couple of hours this weekend.

I like the cover for Serious Moonlight.
I hope your son’s tryout goes well. He’s brave even trying to compete with the older kids so I wish him all the luck and hope he makes it but, as you said, it’ll be a good experience for next year if he doesn’t.

I think I’ve hit a YA wall myself. I’ve been trying to sneak my adult titles in, my but review TBR is massive and mostly YA Fantasy. I’m reading Wicked Saints right now and it’s going well so far!

I’ve had exactly the same problem. I don’t know how I managed to end up with so many fantasy review books so close together, but it has really led to burnout. I’m glad you’re enjoying Wicked Saints so far. I’m on a blog tour for it, so I’m going to pick it back up in a couple of days, after reading a couple of fluffy contemporaries.

Eat. Breathe. Soccer. AND tax season — your plate is so full. I think it’s awesome you are letting a service take care of some of the smaller things to give you a little breathing room. I am excited about the Bennett book, even though I have to read a PDF. I will power through, because I know it will be worth it. Maybe you pinpointed why I love contemporaries so much. I don’t have to learn a whole new world. Huh. I will be interested in seeing what you though of Please Send Help. I read the first book, and didn’t like it as much as I thought I would, but am still curious.

Urg. It sounds like a rough time of year – not helped by Easter being so very late this year, so that holiday we are all due is missing for another month… I hope your son enjoys the tryouts – I think that’s half the battle. Have a good reading week, Suzanne – I like the sound of Something Like Gravity:)

He came home from the tryouts very upbeat today, which I was thrilled to see. Hopefully that will bode well for him. 🙂

Sometimes you just need a new genre, or something that’s a bit “easier” to read where you aren’t trying to imagine whole new worlds. Good luck to your son!!!

Exactly! Next year I’m going to try to plan better and request more contemporary reads and save the fantasy for after the tax deadline when my brain can handle it, lol.

My sister in law uses Instacart and loves it. She’s a single mom, so it gives her time to spend with her son on weekends, instead of running around getting groceries. It’s been a big help to a disabled friend as well, so I’m glad this service exists! Take advantage of it during your busy season!

You’ve got some great reviews coming up! Have a great week!

It really is a great service. I don’t know that I’d use it every week for grocery shopping, but during this busy time, it’s a lifesaver.

I’m all about paying for convenience. Grocery pick-up or delivery, dinner delivery… sign me up. Yes it costs a little more but it also saves my sanity some days. And that’s priceless. 🙂 I hope you’re enjoying Serious Moonlight. I’ve only read one by Jenn Bennett and keep meaning to read more.

    • Suzanne
      Suzanne says:

Yes, I’m finding Instacart both a time saver and a sanity saver these days. I don’t know how long I’ll use it, but it’s worth every penny right now.

So taxes and soccer is your life right now? 😛 Good luck to your son at the tryouts! And like you said, it’s still good practice, even if he doesn’t make it, and he’ll be more comfortable trying again next year 🙂 Have a great week!

      Suzanne says:

Yep, that pretty well sums up my week! The main reading I’m getting done is listening to an audiobook while parked in the school parking lot waiting for tryouts to finish each day, lol.
