Weekly Recap #87: Week of 1/13 – 1/19

It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

What a crazy weather week we’ve had here in Virginia. My son was out of school Monday and Tuesday because we had five inches of snow and by the end of the week, we had temps in the 50s and it felt almost springlike.  The bottom is supposed to drop out on those temps tonight though with a projected low of 11 degrees tonight and a high of 25 tomorrow.  I know I won’t want to get out of bed tomorrow morning (not that I ever do on a Monday morning) with temps like that.

Other than the wild weather, life has been plodding along like usual.  The big excitement for this week was that I had minor surgery and therefore got to work from home two days.  The surgery itself was no big deal, but I have to say it was really nice working from home.  It was amazing how much I actually got done without having to worry about incoming phone calls, people stopping by my desk, and the other various interruptions that always happen in the office.  I could get used to that, lol.

I’ve been continuing my Gilmore Girls rewatch and enjoying it because it’s kind of like comfort food, but I will be abandoning that tomorrow to start watching Season 5 of Grace and Frankie, which is one of my favorite series.  I’m impressed that I’ve waited two whole days to start watching it, but I decided I wanted to use it as a reward if I can get all of this week’s blog posts out of the way this weekend.  I’m planning 5 posts for the week and this one is number 3, so we’ll see if I can stick to the plan.  I also got a little behind on blog hopping because of my surgery, but hopefully I’ll get caught up on that this weekend too.

I had a mixed bag on the reading front last week. I did end up DNFing 96 Words for Love. I just wasn’t feeling it so decided to cut my losses and move on.  On a much better note though, I finally read (and loved!) The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater.  That one had been on my TBR for over two years.  I also finished Murder on the Orient Express, which was also great.  I did both of those as audiobooks so they did double duty for my backlist and audiobook challenges.  I also finished two ARCs and will be reviewing those this week, The Suspect by Fiona Barton and The Lost Girls of Paris by Pam Jenoff.  I had mixed feelings about The Suspect but enjoyed it overall, and I thought The Lost Girls of Paris was fantastic.

I think that’s about it for now.  Have a great week, everyone!

That’s some serious up and down weather. Working from home is a dream. Same when the bosses are out of the office. Amazing what can get done with no interruptions. I read The Raven Boys years ago and never continued the series – it just wasn’t for me, despite all the hype. I read something by Pam Jenoff a while back that I enjoyed. Can’t recall the title right this minute. Love your random this week. 🙂

There seems to be a distinct lack of enthusiasm for 96 Words for Love going around. I’ve seen many DNFs / low ratings so you’re not alone!

I love working from home. We have flexi working at my office so as long as I don’t have meetings etc I can work from home if I choose. It usually works out at WFH one day a week but it’s my favourite day of the work week and I get FAR more done in it too for the reasons you listed. It’s my undisturbed admin day. 🙂

    Have a good week!

That’s a shame that people aren’t enjoying 96 Words. I was hoping it was just me.

Oh yes, I would love to work from home at least one day a week. I wish we had that option.

Right? It feels like we have a random season every couple of days. After these low temps, we’re supposed to be right back up to the 50s by midweek. Crazy, lol.

Suzanne I need to get back reading The Raven Boys series too! I had read the first one, loved it but as the other books were not published yet I forgot to read the other books! And I am with you on homeworking being much more efficient! We work on “open space” so basically lots of noise and people interrupting me all the time. By the end of the day I am just exhausted. Home means quiet and better to focus on the job at hand.
I hope you’ll have a great week with a much more normal weather.

Glad your surgery went well, and yay for working from home! I really want to read Murder on the Orient Express one of these days… I watched the latest movie version recently and liked it, and I’ve always kinda wanted to read it. I need to get it in gear! Also The Suspect has been kinda calling me too, so I’ll watch for your review, especially if it was kind of a mixed bag.

I did the audiobook of Murder on the Orient Express and was surprised at how quickly I breezed through it. Now I need to watch the movie, lol.

What a wild week in weather! We’ve got the low teens in weather this week. This winter has been a mess!

Is Grace and Frankie the one about adult toys? I haven’t seen it yet.

I’ll be reading Dark of the West soon as well!

I hope you are recovering well from surgery! I’ve only read The Raven Boys (I also listened to the audio) and I hope to finish the series this year. I hope you have a wonderful week and I hope the weather gets it together.

I’m glad the surgery was minor and it went well. Yay for working from home! Maybe you could bring that up to your boss, working from home a day or two a week? Just talk about how more productive you’d be!! I’m glad you liked The Raven Boys, and Murder on the Orient Express! Both great reads.

It’s crazy that you have gotten more snow than I have. NJ dodged another storm this weekend. Nothing but rain for us, though the cold front is coming on strong at the moment. So cold! I hope you are healing well, and I love having random days off when I have no obligations. I really enjoyed Goodbye, Perfect. I hope you do too.

I’m really hating this cold snap. It’s supposed to be back to the 50’s by midweek and I can’t wait. Glad to hear Goodbye, Perfect was a great read for you. I need to finish Watch Us Rise and then I’m jumping into that one.

Glad the minor surgery went off okay and that you had a chance to enjoy a couple of days off work. I look forward to seeing what you make of Courting Darkness – I think I read and enjoyed something by Robin LaFevers in the dim and distant past. I hope you have a great week, Suzanne and are on track to be fully recovered:)

Thanks Sarah. I’m feeling pretty good and have gone back to work today, so I think I’m well on the road to recovery. 🙂

Thanks Aimee! I’m feeling much better today. I’m really hoping Descendant of the Crane is as amazing as it sounds. I’m trying not to request as many ARCs but couldn’t stop myself when I read the synopsis.

Oh man that is nutty weather. It was warmer here today and supposed to be in the teens tomorrow. I am just glad that we don’t have to go out because of the day off. I always enjoyed working from home when I could. And a DNF is so much better than wasting your time. Hope you have a great week!

    • Suzanne
      Suzanne says:

Yes, I did not enjoy going out in the cold this morning. It was miserable. Thankfully we’re supposed to be back in the 50s by midweek.

I’m glad your surgery went well; I don’t think I could work from home, though! I would get too distracted, lol. Hope the weather clears up for you soon. I thought we were going to get a big story, turned out to be nothing!

I know what you mean. It actually surprised me how focused I was while working at home. I’m not sure how I would do long-term.

Yikes, your weather! I am curious about what you think of The suspect. Premise seems interesting but the last book i read from the author wasn’t the best

I posted my review for The Suspect today. I enjoyed the mystery aspect of it, but found it hard to connect with the main character. I had the same issue with the last book I read by her.

We’re finally getting some snow up here too, but since I have I have a cold, I have zero desire to go out and enjoy this winter wonderland. Just give some coffee and books!

I’m feeling much better, thanks! I’ve only read two Agatha Christie books so far but I’ve loved them both and want to try more.

I don’t watch much tv but I do love the Gilmore Girls. I originally did the Netflix trial when that seasons thing came out and we kept the Netflix. My daughter likes it.

I LOVED The Scorpio Races and The Raven Boys has been on my TBR for quite awhile too. I’ll look forward to seeing what you think of it and The Suspect.

It’s cold here for a couple nights of 15 in NC but supposed to be 60 by Wednesday. Tomorrow we are staying in and not going anywhere since my daughter has no class until Wednesday.

      Suzanne says:

I still need to read The Scorpio Races so I’m glad to hear you enjoyed it. I wish I didn’t have to go out in this cold weather today. Thankfully we’ll be back in the 50’s tomorrow too.
