Weekly Recap #82: Week of 12/9 -12/15

It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

We had our first big snowfall of the season here in Central Virginia this past week.  Well, not really all that big, but we don’t do snow here so it doesn’t take much to shut everything down.  We had 5 inches of the white stuff, and my son’s school was closed for 3 1/2 days.  I even got one snow day out of it myself, which was nice since I’ve been so wiped out lately.  This Thursday thankfully is my last work day of 2018, so I can have a couple of days to crash and burn before the holiday festivities kick into high gear.

My son had his first band concert of the year this past Thursday night.  He plays trumpet and band is really the only class he likes this year, so I was really glad to attend the concert and hear how great they actually already sounded.  It was especially impressive considering they’ve only been playing their instruments since late August and all of the band classes only got to meet together once to practice as a big group because of the snow cancellations.

Speaking of my son, I love him dearly but he was a huge source of unexpected drama this week.  Since Thanksgiving he’s been telling me that his math teacher has been giving them time in class to finish their homework and so he hasn’t been bringing anything home to work on.  As I found out the hard way this week, that’s not the case, and he has actually turned in so little work since Thanksgiving that his grade has dropped from an A to a C.  I can’t get a straight answer out of him as to what’s going on, but I think he has been lying about having homework to do because his soccer classes are eating into his video game time.  The only way he could reclaim that time was to say he had already completed his homework and then hide the evidence to the contrary by not bringing anything home.  I had an impromptu conference with the math teacher this week and she showed me how I can go online and see her actual grade book and know what’s missing and what has been turned in going forward, but needless to say, it did not make for a good week and my son is now expected to bring his assignments home every night, whether or not he has already completed them, so that I can see for myself.

Not much else is going on here. I just finished picking out what blogging/reading challenges I want to do in 2019, so I’ll be posting those tomorrow.  I only have one more ARC that I need to review for December and I’m reading that right now so I’m feeling pretty good about that right now.  I still need to do two discussion posts to complete my 2018 discussion challenge so hopefully I can knock those out in the next couple of weeks as well.

Oh well, that’s all I have.  I hope everyone has a great week!

I’m reading two of these this week, too, Suzanne- I’m Watching You and Anonymous! The latter is off to an amazing start! I was up late with it last night. I am sorry to hear about your son and his math assignments, but it sounds like you are on top of it. I’m in central NC, and we got hammered with a foot of snow this week! We were out of school all week long. I’m not sure when that last happened. I hope you have a wonderful holiday!

Oh good, I’m glad to hear An Anonymous Girl is off to such a good start for you. I really enjoyed their last book so can’t wait to dive into this new one.

Happy Holidays to you as well!

Wow, 5 inches sounds like a lot for someplace that doesn’t typically get much snow. Yay for snow days! And how nice that you have some time off coming up! Sorry to hear about the school/homework drama. Ugh. At least now you know you check the assignments online and know what’s being turned in… and what isn’t. I’m excited for Watching You. Lisa Jewell rarely disappoints.

Whoa, three days of school closures? School closures are rare in Chicago, I think we’ve only gotten them for extremely cold days. Like “you go outside for 5 minutes and you’re at risk for frostbite” cold.

That’s troubling about your son. I wonder why he’s lying and just generally apathetic about his work. I hope you guys are able to talk it out soon!

Good luck with finishing your review copies! I’ve got three January books to wrap up then I think I only have like 6 review copies for 2019 (of course that will change).

Yes, I hope my son turns it around soon. He says he doesn’t want to drop out of the algebra class into a lower math so hopefully he’ll be motivated enough to keep that from happening.

It doesn’t snow where I live – too near the sea. It did snow once, but it was before I was even born. I’m still hoping one day it will snow again because I would love to see it (and have a reason to stay home in a blanket). I’m sorry about your son and his math homework. At least now, you can follow his work and be sure of what is going on.

    I hope you enjoy Vengeful.

Wishes of a good week. 🙂

I don’t like having to go out in the snow to drive to work, etc., but it is beautiful to sit and watch the snowflakes fall. I hope you get to see it some day.

Oh my Samantha! Bad surprise indeed but not so unusual for young boys I am afraid. That’s good that the math teacher showed you how to outsmart him! Now 5 inches and everything is closed??? I don’t think schools would close for 5 inches here. Ten would be another story though. Have a wonderful Sunday!

Whoa! It took 3.5 days to clear up 5 inches of snow? That’s crazy. I am jealous of everyone, who gets off for the holidays. I only have one day – the 25th, and would have loved more since it’s the last time for I don’t know how long that my daughter will be visiting. Oh, no! Adjusting to MS and balancing activities can be hard.

Aww, that’s a bummer you don’t get more time off with your daughter at Christmas. I hope you enjoy the time you do get with her.

Wow, that’s a lot of days off for 5 inches of snow! Unfortunately, it takes way more than that up here. I’m sorry to hear that about your son and his math class, though. Hopefully things will be better going forward! Can’t wait to hear about what challenges you’re going to do!

      Suzanne says:

Yeah, we don’t do snow well at all here. I’ve never understood why either, but it has been that way all my life. I was actually surprised they only missed 3.5 days, lol.

Wow, they closed school for 3 days because of 5 inches of snow?! I would have loved that as a kid. We get tons of snow here, so we rarely have snow days. Everybody is used to snow. Sorry about the homework drama. Hopefully he can get his grade back up. Have a great week!

It’s sad how poorly people around here cope with the snow and it has been that way my whole life. Businesses will usually close for a day and then open late the next, but the schools always close for days and days.

Wow 3 and a half days for snow! I would have loved that as a kid haha. Although I think we came close to that a few times- we definitely had two in a row off a few times. anyway hope the snow isn’t too much of a bother if it’s still there.

Ooh you have Watching You- I’m looking forward to that one, and An Anonymous Girl as well.

We had a random 60 degree day today so I think all remnants of the snow are finally gone. I just started watching you and am really enjoying it so far.

Yes, we had about the same where I am in NC and things shut down for a few days. I lived in MN and it never shut down even with 30 inches. I just laugh. But I don’t go out here because no one here knows how to drive in it but me. It’s been 60 since so it’s all melted. We alternate now between sunny, cool days and warmer, rainy days but mostly 50s which is normal. Wow so many people are taking the holiday week off completely. I never had that in the types of work I did. Enjoy your break and your lovely reads! Anne – Books of My Heart
