Weekly Recap #70: Week of 9/9-9/15

It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

It has been such a strange week here in terms of the weather.  Last week I posted about how we were getting ready for Hurricane Florence and that I was expecting to lose power, etc.  Well, Florence made a last minute dip south and is plowing her way through the Carolinas as I type this.  We are actually still waiting for her, however, but she is now expected to make a U-turn and head back out to sea by way of Virginia.  So it’s going to take her a while to bring her flooding rains here, but they’re still coming.  Crazy weather, lol.  I don’t know if I have any followers who live in the Carolinas, but if so, I hope that you made it through the storm okay.

Because everyone was so sure that we would be getting pummeled by Florence’s wind and rain the whole weekend, all of my son’s soccer games and practices were cancelled “due to poor field conditions.”  A little premature obviously but I guess better safe than sorry.  For those keeping track of our soccer adventures though, we did come back and win Game 2 4-1, so we’re all feeling better about the season now.  It would have been nice to get that third game in yesterday and another practice to keep the momentum going but we’ll take what we can get at this point.

Reading and blog-wise, I feel like I didn’t get much of anything done this week.  I fell asleep most evening when I sat down to read and had some trouble getting into Unstoppable Moses.  It picked up a few chapters in and I’m now nearly finished with it, but I definitely got off to a rough start with it.  I also had to revamp my reading schedule to accommodate a library loan that was expiring today.  It was The Cheerleaders and thankfully it was such a page turner that I ended up starting and finishing it on Friday.

I did participate in the blog tour for The Lantern’s Ember by Colleen Houck this week.  There’s a U.S. only giveaway from the publisher included in my review post so definitely check that out if you’re interested in a chance to win a copy of that book.  They’re giving away 3 of them.

I’ve also been trying to get better about walking, not just for me but also for my son.  Looking at him on the soccer field this season, I don’t think all of his video game playing is doing him any favors.  He has pretty much no stamina out there.  And with me sitting at a desk all day, I’m not much better.  I already have a fitbit so we also bought my son one and everyday this week we have tried to walk at least 10,000 steps.  We were successful all but one day, so we’re going to keep this up and hopefully I can eventually even get both of us up to a slow jog.  He seems content to get out there and do it as long as he has me for company so hopefully that will be good motivation for both of us.

Oh well, I think that’s it for me. I hope everyone else has a great week!

Glad Florence missed you! Too bad about the games but yeah – better safe than sorry.
I haven’t hear too much about The Cheerleaders but it sounds like it definitely kept you gripped.
Love your random this week… probably because it’s so true! 🙂

I hope it’s not too bad with Florence, that is scary. Good luck with the walking, I know what you mean, I sit at my desk 40+ hours a week too. Enjoy your books and have a great week 🙂

Right? Desk jobs make it so hard to be active, especially when you work full time and there aren’t many hours left in the day to make the walking happen.

A fellow Virginian! Where are you located? (I understand if you don’t want to say.) I’m flying home on Monday and hoping the rains aren’t too bad at that point. Also, kudos to you for getting yourself and your son out to exercise. I need to do that myself.

You got some terrific-looking books this week! I’ve been wanting to read Circe in particular.

Oh no, I don’t mind. I’m located in Fredericksburg, VA. It’s pretty awful here today with tornado warnings and such so I hope you were able to get home safely.

Good luck on having long walks! I love walking it is like a therapy for me. I go for really long walks and hope you’ll get hooked because it’s so peaceful to walk in the wild 😉 Happy Sunday!

Thanks, I hope that I’ll enjoy them and keep them up as well, at least until it gets cold anyway. I’m too much of a weather wimp to go walking then, lol.

I have been following the news of the hurricane closely as my cousins are out in North Carolina. The news coming out of there is frightening. I hope you will be safe when it comes your way! I am glad to hear your son’s team turned the season around! I had a feeling they would. 🙂 I’m too sedentary also. I spend all day behind a desk at work. 🙁 I was actually liking that the bathroom upstairs at my office was closed for construction because it forced me to use the stairs multiple times a day to get to the one downstairs. Now that the upstairs one is finished, I find I miss that extra exercise. Admittedly it wasn’t much–but it was something. I hope you have a great week, Suzanne. Stay safe!

I hope your cousins in NC made out okay. We’ve had some nasty tornadic storms here today because of Florence but I’m hoping the worst of it has passed.

I hope the storm takes another turn and misses you completely. Moses had such an explosive start, but then I wasn’t sure where it was going at times, and that one scene on the way to the party just turned me off big time. When my library loans come through, I bump books from my TBR. I make them the on-deck book, because it’s a loan.

I have very mixed feelings about Moses. I need to think about it before I rate it, but I didn’t connect with it as much as I thought I would.

I hope the storm doesn’t do too much damage when it eventually reaches you! That’s great that you are getting into walking with your son! I sit at a desk all day, too, and sometimes it’s just so hard to find the motivation to get moving. I’m anxious to hear what you think of The Clockmaker’s Daughter!

Yes, our parents are in Moorehead City. Having lived in Virginia Beach I am glad it turned, all the flooding that would have occurred eep. As it is our family lost power, trees, and had roads closed from flooding. I am curious about the Clockmaker’s Daughter.

I hope that your family gets their power back sooner rather than later. We’re getting the Florence rain and some tornadic storms as well today and it’s no fun. I’ll be glad when she completely fizzles out.

Sorry to hear about your crazy weather and I hope that Florence continues to give you a wide berth… What a good idea to get your son a Fitbit as well! Making him responsible for his own fitness will probably help. I hope you both continue to get fitter together:)

I hope you’re staying dry and the rain isn’t too bad. Good luck with the walking. I have to walk every day because I have a big, needy dog. She gets irritating if we don’t walk a few miles a day. Have a great week!

Ooh I’m glad to hear the Cheerleaders was good. That one is on my must-read-soon list ha ha. And I hope you guys don’t get any storm damage- hopefully it passes you by.

I just read Obscura and liked it. I thought it started a bit slow and took a while to get going, but the ending- wow. Hope you love it!

I’m glad to hear that you ended up enjoying Obscura. Thanks for the head’s up about the slow start. If I experience the same, I’ll know to keep pushing through!
