Weekly Recap #68: Week of 8/26-9/1

It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

So, It’s the last holiday weekend of the summer. I can’t believe it’s here already but after our rainy and gross weather the past 3 months, I can honestly say I’m more than ready for autumn.  The weather was so nasty all summer that I only got to sit out on my deck and read once, which I find just depressing.  It would be nice to get into a cool, dry weather pattern for a while so that I can at least do that for the next couple of months before it gets too cold.

School is in full swing now and I find myself more grateful than ever for the existence of Google.  My son is taking Pre-Algebra this year and comes home everyday with homework that he doesn’t quite seem to understand.  I can’t tell if he’s in over his head, if he’s just not listening in class, or if he just doesn’t like the teaching style of his teacher.  Apparently she uses a lot of videos to teach math.  Anyway, the long and the short of it is that I’m having to re-teach myself Pre Algebra so that I can then re-teach my son each day’s lesson and make sure he really understands everything.  I’ve used the internet to refresh my memory about absolute values, rational and irrational numbers, and adding, subtracting and multiplying negative numbers so thank you, Google! LOL!

Not too much else has gone on this week.  I did finally make it to the theater to see Christopher Robin, which I thought was super cute, and I also watched Ready Player One, which was fantastic!  I have no idea what we’re going to be doing for the rest of this long weekend.  There, of course, is rain in the forecast yet again, and it rained yesterday.  Hopefully Mother Nature will give us a break so that we can get outside and do something fun.  If not, I guess it will be more movies and lots of reading.

Oh well, I think that’s it for me. I hope everyone else has a great week!

I’m eager to read The Kiss Quotient (maybe next!) I’m glad to be able to read whatever I want, so I’m going to enjoy September reading at will.

I spent three years for each of my sons re-teaching math they didn’t seem to get at school. It was exhausting.

Lies looks like such a good thriller. Hope you’re enjoying it )

Haha I’m happy you’re happy about the weather change! I love the rain and cold, but I know it’s not for everyone 😉

Hope your September is off to a great start, Suzanne!

I am ready for autumn too. We had the windows open last night which was nice. It’s finally cool enough in the evenings and mornings to let in some fresh air! I would love it if we could have a wet fall and winter, but that’s probably not going to happen. One can dream . . . That’s tough that your son is dealing with that with the math. I am glad you have found a way to help him, even if it is more work for you. My daughter’s teacher was telling us about a program at back to school night the parents can use to understand better what our 2nd graders are learning since some of the way they are learning to solve problems is not the way we were taught when we were in school. I am glad you enjoyed Ready Player One! I would like to see that one. Maybe it will come out on Netflix streaming sooner than later. One can hope! Your new books all look awesome! I hope the new Diane Setterfield book is as good as it sounds. Enjoy your reading! Have a great week, Suzanne!

Ugh, math is the worst! Some of my least favorite classes in school. Ready Player One was such a fun movie, glad you enjoyed it! I think I’m 50th in line at the library for Crazy Rich Asians!

LOL! I believe it. I purchased a copy from Amazon using a gift card I had and when I did, there was a delay getting it because even they were out of stock.

Google is great for homework help, but YouTube is even better. When I was teaching chem, the kids used to tell me about channels they used all the time. We had rain in the forecast, but so far (knock on wood), so good. Still sticky and gross though.

I’ll have to check out YouTube and see what they have on PreAlgebra.

It was sticky and gross here the entire weekend too. We tried to do some things outside but it was pretty miserable. Here’s hoping fall rolls in with some beautiful weather!

Oh gosh, I wasn’t very good at math when I had to take it – I can’t imagine re-learning it to teach someone else, so good for you! LOL Sorry your son is having trouble with it though. Ooh City of Ghosts; I hope that’s a good read.I really need to get a copy!

LOL! Yes, it has been pretty challenging. Most of the time I’m sitting there like “OMG, I hope I’m telling him the right thing!”

I am super ready for fall. We had such obscene heat this week I could use cooler temps. I am dreading when my kids get older and have harder math and other subjects. I am sure I will be on Google all the time! Oh I see you got Daisy Jones. I am so excited for it!! Have a great week!

Google has been a real lifesaver for me so far. Lord help me when we get to the even higher maths, lol.

I didn’t even realize Taylor had another book coming out until I saw it on Netgalley so I was so happy to be approved for it.

It’s felt like fall for about a month here already. I’m so glad I did my review of Summer Days and Summer Nights in July, when it still felt like summer!

The Kiss Quotient was great. I got to read The House of One Thousand Eyes a while back when I got an ARC from Netgalley.

    Have a great week!

Pre- algebra. Fun! Yes Google is a good thing sometimes lol. And they teach math differently now, at least in my experience. And it’s been raining a lot here too- we had another downpour/ storm tonight.

I still need to see Christopher Robin, it looks great. 🙂

    • Suzanne
      Suzanne says:

Yes, they definitely seem to teach math a little differently now. I had hoped that would stop when my son moved up into PreAlgebra, but nope.

Movies & reading are always are great plan when not so great weather is on the forecast – I do hope it picks up though! Some interesting incoming books; I’m intrigued by Once Upon A River. Happy reading & a lovely week to you.

Videos to teach math… huh. That’s a new one on me. If I had to help a kid with algebra we’d be in dire straits. I’m practically math phobic. *shudder* I loved Christopher Robin – so precious. We’ve definitely been getting our dose of thunderstorms. But that’s typical FL weather. Looking forward to your review of The Kiss Quotient. I loved that one. And your random is so true! 🙂

    • Suzanne
      Suzanne says:

Yeah, the videos to teach math are new to me as well and I personally don’t find them all that effective, at least for my child.

Videos to teach math??? Wow, that sounds a bit rough. I’m guessing it’s the teaching style. I think it’s a lot harder to learn from a screen than from a real live person or even a physical book. I’m glad you’re able to use google to help! Ha ha. Thank goodness for the digital age.

I also totally agree with your random pic! Such a dilemma! Hope you’re having a great week!

I’m so ready for Autumn too but for the opposite reason to yours… Our summer has been so unnaturally hot that it was hideous! Bring on the pretty colours, yummy foods, awesome smells, jumpers, and snuggling up with a blanket and a good book!

Oh videos to teach math? That wouldn’t work for me either. I’d zone out. Great that you are helping him out like that though every day. <3
