Weekly Recap #60: Week of 7/1 – 7/7

It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

I hope everyone who was celebrating this week had a wonderful 4th of July.  We had a quiet day here since both my husband and I had to work the day before and the day after the holiday.  We did finally get to the theater to see Ocean’s 8 though, which was fabulous, for anyone who hasn’t seen it yet.  I had never seen the other Ocean’s movies either so I came home with the intention of binge watching all of them.  That didn’t work out too well, unfortunately.  I fell asleep halfway through both Ocean’s 11 and Ocean’s 12, then gave up on the whole plan.  I think the buildup to the actual heists just felt so slow in the original movies compared to Ocean’s 8 and my attention span just wasn’t up for the challenge.  I gave up and ended up binge watching the first season of the old TV show Felicity instead.  I had forgotten how much I loved that show when it first came on TV.

This has also been the week of major home improvement projects.  My Saturday was seriously so exciting I just couldn’t stand it!  Want to know how I spent it?  Painting the shutters on my house and waiting for my new oven to finally be delivered.    We were given an annoying 4-hour delivery window for the oven so since we had to stay at home for that long anyway, we decided to multi-task and get the shutters painted.  We’re also planning to redo our front porch so once we got the oven, we spent the rest of the afternoon driving around looking for porch railings and columns that we liked.  Exciting stuff, right?

My son is at his grandmother’s for the holiday, so it was quiet here all week and the weather was gorgeous so I spent the rest of my time out on my deck reading. I got a lot of reading done on A Feast for Crows.  I’m over 700 pages in now and hope to actually finish it this week, which I’m kind of impressed with myself about since it usually takes me months to read one of those books.  I’m also planning to finish the Grishaverse trilogy this week.  I started the last book yesterday but got sidetracked by all of that shutter painting excitement.

My son comes home today and we’re taking him out for a celebratory milk shake.  While he was at his grandmother’s, we got his math placement in the mail and learned that he has placed into Pre-Algebra for the upcoming school year.  He’s going into 6th grade and only about 10% of the 6th graders in the county place into Pre-Algebra so we’re very excited for him especially since he loves Math and really wanted to place into Pre-Algebra.  Why a milkshake?  Because apparently I’m a horrible parent and my child has never had a milkshake before.   I know, I know! *hangs head in shame*.  In my defense. for years he has done nothing but tell me how much he hates milk and, up until about two years ago, he wouldn’t really eat ice cream either.  It just never dawned on me that he would have any interest in a milkshake. But now the interest is definitely there and he has FaceTimed me everyday this week to make sure we’re still going today, lol.

I think that’s it for me. I hope everyone else has a great week! 🙂

My son took pre-algebra in 6th grade as well, and now he’s a sophomore in college as a computer science major. He actually just finished all his math requirements this year (one was Boolean algebra which is really hard!) Congrats to your son! And I LOVE home improvement projects, I wish I could get my husband interested enough to help me😁

Yeah for math! That’s awesome news about your son’s math placement. I hope your school has classes for him as he progresses through the system. That was my chief complaint when my daughter was accelerated. Felicity is one of my all-time favorite TV shows. I splurged several years ago and bought all four seasons on DVD.

They seem to have a lot of options, especially once he gets to high school, so hopefully the options will still be a part of the curriculum once he makes it that far. Oh, I’m glad I’m not the only Felicity fan. I loved that show so much and also ended up buying the entire series on DVD.

The maths scheme sounds marvellous – congratulations to your son and I hope he enjoys his milk shake – all my family are dairy intolerant so it goes without saying my grandchildren have also never had the pleasure. I also want to watch Ocean’s 8, so am heartened that you enjoyed it so much. I hope this oven doesn’t catch fire! Have a great week, Suzanne…

I still want to see Ocean’s 8, it’ll probably be a Netflix thing for us, though. Congrats to your son! Haha, home improvement projects! It’s always something. OMG, can’t wait to hear your thoughts on The Clockmaker’s Daughter! I am (im)patiently waiting for my pre-ordered copy, which doesn’t come until October!

It really is always something when it comes to home improvement. Even as we’re actively working on one projects, we’re looking around and seeing more and more that we need to do.

I really liked Ocean’s 8, so I’m glad you did too! That’s kind of funny about your son – hope you enjoyed the milkshake at least! And congrats to him on getting into pre-Algebra.

Haha, yep we all enjoyed our milkshakes! I took him to this shop downtown called Carl’s that is consistently on the Best of lists in my state when it comes to soft serve ice cream and milkshakes.

It’s great that your son is doing well in school. I was terrible at math and barely passed it. You’re reading A Feast for Crows! I’ve been procrastinating that book because it’s so long. I hope you have a good week!

I hated math but was pretty good at it, so hopefully I’ll at least be able to help him if he struggles. I think he’ll do great though. Yes, amazingly enough, I actually finished A Feast for Crows and it only took me two weeks instead of the usual two months that it takes me to read a George R.R. Martin book.

Congrats to your son! And yay for Feast for Crows- wow you’re really flying through that! Ocean’s 8 sounds like a lot of fun, and I don’t know, it looks a little more interesting than the earlier ones? I was never that into those but I think this new one looks good!

I hope that Not That I Could Tell was good, I kinda want to read that one.

Yes, I actually finished A Feast for Crows this morning! I just ordered the next book but I imagine it will be a while before I tackle another one of his books.

Ahhh Ocean’s 8! One of the many movies I have yet to (but really want to) see. D: Congrats to your son, though, that’s awesome!!! AND WHATTT HIS FIRST MILKSHAKE!?! I’m so sad he doesn’t like milk! D:

I know! I felt so bad when he told me he had never had one before. I didn’t even realize it. Thankfully he loved his first shake though so all is right in his world now, lol.

I hate those four hour windows! But productivity feels good, right? I really love the Ocean’s Eleven movie. I tried watching Ocean’s Twelve and couldn’t really get into it though. I really want to see the new one!

The new one is so good! I really loved the entire cast and pretty much everything about the heist they were involved in.

Thanks! Oh yes, he totally enjoyed it. It was a nice treat for us all actually. I’m pretty sure it’s the first one I’ve had in several years. Need to treat myself more often, lol.

I love your son’s excitement for the milkshake. LOL So did it live up to his expectations? 🙂 I hate those 4 hour delivery/service windows. There goes half your day. Ugh. I really need to get back to the Grisha series, too. I read the first book last fall and just never continued. I hate having unfinished series when all the books are out and I have no excuses. Drives me crazy. 🙂

Oh yes, he loved it! I made sure to take him to the most popular place in town for ice cream and shakes, an old fashioned ice cream shop, and he loved the whole experience.

A new oven! That’s awesome. Glad you it arrived. Plus re-doing your porch sounds exciting.

Congrats on your son’s achievements. That’s so awesome and I love that he’s so excited about going for a milkshake! My child is a dairy product consumer of note so she’s always been in to milkshakes (since I eased up enough to actually let her have sugar!).

So excited to see what you think of Ruin and Rising and Feast for Crows!

And your totally random? Have you got an answer on that one yet? 😉
