Top Ten Tuesday – The Snail’s Pace Edition: Top 10 Series You Probably Think I’ve Quit, But I Swear I Haven’t!

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is Series I’ve Given Up On/Don’t Plan to Finish.  I’ve done a similar topic recently and don’t really have any new series that I’ve quit since then.  For that reason, I decided to tweak the topic a bit and instead share with you a list of series that it probably seems like I’ve quit because it’s taking me so long to actually get through them.  I’ve made no secret of the fact that I really struggle to keep up with series. I hate waiting for the next book in the series to come out, and if the series goes on for too many books, I tend to lose interest, etc.  In the case of the series below, however, I love what I’ve read so far and I’m determined to finish them, no matter how long it takes me.  Even if in some cases, I’m looking at you ‘A Song of Ice and Fire,’ I’ve been reading it since late 2012, lol.

Top 10 Series You Probably Think I’ve Quit, But I Swear I Haven’t!

THE GRISHA TRILOGY by Leigh Bardugo

It took me forever to start the Grisha trilogy but I finally did manage to get through the first two books earlier this year.  I loved them both but then kind of stalled out on the series.  I’m determined to finish it this summer though.

RED RISING SAGA by Pierce Brown

I read the first book in this series back when I first started blogging, fell in love with it, and then promptly fell asleep when it came to continuing the series.  I have purchased the second book though so we’ll see if I get through that this year.

A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE by George R.R. Martin

I have been reading this series since late 2012 and although I seriously love it, the books are just so darn long!  I read one every year or so and that’s about all I can take.  I’m up to the fourth book now and I’m determined to finish the series no matter how long it takes.

THE FIFTH WAVE by Rick Yancey

I have no excuse on this one aside from I completely forgot about it until glancing at my bookshelf to put together this list and seeing the second book in the series still sitting there unread.

PERCY JACKSON AND THE OLYMPIANS by Rick Riordan

I was reading this series with my son and we got through the first two books before he seemed to lose interest in it.  I, however, am still very much interested in continuing and will do so on my own if my son doesn’t wish to continue.

ME BEFORE YOU by Jojo Moyes

The first book just gutted me so thoroughly that I’ve been hesitant to continue.  I will though. I just have to work myself up to it.

THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA by Lauren Weisberger

I loved the first book in this series back in 2010 and really enjoyed it, but then I went through a phase where I wanted to read absolutely nothing that was labeled as Chick Lit.  I feel that I’m starting to come out of that phase a bit so I definitely see myself continuing this series at some point.

KINGDOM ON FIRE by Jessica Cluess

This is another series I haven’t yet continued because I forgot about it.  (Did I mention I have a real problem when it comes to keeping up with series?)

CLASH OF KINGDOMS by Erin Summerill

Yet another series that I forgot about until I recently saw that the third book will be coming out soon.

DC ICONS by Various Authors

I’ll admit that my excitement for this series waned a bit after seeing a lot of mixed reviews for the Batman: Nightwalker book.  I did adore Wonder Woman: Warbringer though so I definitely plan to continue, if for no other reason, than I need to get to the Catwoman and Superman books.

Question:  Are there any series that are taking you forever to get through, but you’re determined not to quit them?

You’ve got a pretty good list here! I watched The Devil Wears Prada and Percy Jackson on tv, and never considered reading the books. With my attention span these days, it’s rough to commit to a series, and I totally get losing interest too. Happy Tuesday and Hugs…RO

My daughter keeps trying to get me to read the Grisha books, and I loved SoC, but I am just not feeling series these days. I do hope to pick up with the Percy Jackson series again, soon. It might even work on audio for me. I loved where Moyes brought Lou, so if you are a Lou fan, the rest of the books are so worth reading.

A Song of Ice and Fire- so true! Those books are immense. And I’ve been wanting to read the Ever the Hunted books too.

I need to read dc icons too. I read the first but havn’t gotten to the second. Percy Jackson is another one I need to finish. I think I have the last two left… but I have to reread… it’s been too long.

Yes, I think I’m going to have to back and up re-read the first two Percy Jackson books. I know I liked them but can’t remember much about either of them.

Nice list! I forced myself through the Fifth Wave series. Book 1 was by far the best and for me, they just went downhill after that. I really enjoyed the Me Before You series – I’m probably in the minority of people that thought the books actually got better as they went on!

I’m hoping to get to After You this summer. The 5th Wave is the one from this list that I’m least convinced I’ll finish. We’ll see how it goes.

I would like to start Percy Jackson someday. A Song of Ice and Fire is so good, but yeah, a real commitment! I enjoyed The Devil Wears Prada books, although the second one has gotten pretty scathing reviews.

Yes, I think the horrible reviews were what initially put me off of continuing The Devil Loves Prada series, and then of course I just forgot about it until the third book popped up on my radar.

The 5th Wave made my list too but there is no way I’m continuing that series. I’m one of the few who didn’t like that book. I also wasn’t aware there was a The Devil Wears Prada sequel. Might have to look that one up!

I had forgotten about The Devil Loves Prada series until the third book was announced. I really hope to read both of them at some point.

I’m really trying to finish some series this year – and read some others that have been on my wish list for a long time. LOL It takes me awhile usually too. I’ve read Me Before You and I need to check out the other two; forewarning, I’ve heard a lot of people didn’t LOVE the second book but that the third is really good. 🙂

I’m hoping to finish a few too. I’ve heard the same thing about the Me Before You series, so we’ll see how it goes.

It is so hard to keep up with series though. Like everything is a series and we can’t read as fast as they can publish them apparently. ._. You can take all the time you want with the fifth ASOIAF book. The sixth one isn’t even on the horizon yet, lol

Yeah, Kingdom on Fire is one that I constantly forget about. I won a copy of the second book and it’s sitting on my shelf, but I never think about it until I’m already reading another book and I think ‘oh I’ll pick that up soon.’… and we all know those words are a lie, haha. The Grisha trilogy is one that I somehow haven’t managed to finish, either! Great list!

I forgot about Me Before You being a continuation. That’s another one that I’d add to my list. I was perfectly fine with the ending and like to think that Louisa goes forth and lives her life well as Will intended. I don’t want to know if something different happened to her or not.

This is so funny- I’m like this. Either I’m waiting for the next of the series to come out, or I just happen to throw a few books in between the series books and just get side tracked!

I have a few series I never finished also, it’s hard. And I bought the first Jojo Moyes book and never even read it. Good luck with getting back to these, they look good.
The only series I devoured and read twice were the Harry Potter books.

YES! When a series guts me I am hesitant to go back for the next book, though I like to pretend I’m not going back for some other reason lol And after putting this week’s list together I realised how many other series I’d forgotten about and didn’t add to the list!

I suck at finishing series too. I read A Game of Thrones last year after binge watching the tv series and just haven’t gotten around to picking up the second just yet. Not sure there is much of a hurry with the speed the author releases the books right? lol I’m hoping maybe this summer I’ll start the second and just read a chapter or two a day along with my other reads.

    • Suzanne
      Suzanne says:

Right? I think that’s why 6 years in, I’m only halfway through. Maybe he’ll have the next book out by the time I’m finally caught up, lol.

I read the 5 books of A Song of Ice and Fire last year. It took me MONTHS to get through them… and I’ve read 14 books this month and am nearly halfway through Strange the Dreamer, which I started yesterday, so I can read a book fairly quickly.

I think I read all of he 5th Wave books in a day per book. The first one is the best though.

I never understand why everyone else always says they’re so bad at keeping up with series when I’m the opposite lol. I usually grab the next book in a series as soon as it comes out, and I love binge reading. But anyway, glad you’re not giving up on all these! I haven’t read them, but I kind of want to try Percy Jackson.

    • Suzanne
      Suzanne says:

I wish I was more like you. I wouldn’t have nearly so many half finished series sitting around, lol. I’ve only read the first two books in the Percy Jackson series so far but I thought they were just so much fun. I loved the use of the mythology.

I have already read your Sunday post so I knew you were heading on with the Grisha Trilogy – I had wondered though! 😉

Red Rising is on my TBR. One day???

    ASOIAF… Sigh.

I also want to read The Fifth Wave…

Ha ha – I totally understand you on Percy Jackson! I loved those books.

Me Before You I’m scared to even pick up……

I also read Ever the Hunted by Erin Summerill and forgot to continue.

Don’t let Batman scare you. At the worst it’s quick to power through and then CATWOMAN next month! Eep! I might be excited about that one! 😀
