Weekly Recap #45: Week of 3/18 – 3/24

It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

So last week was the first week of Spring, but apparently Winter wasn’t quite ready to say goodbye because we had 4-5 inches of snow here and two more snow days for my son.  All I can say at this point is “Don’t let the door hit you on the way out, Winter!”  Anyway, here’s hoping that the warm and sunny days will begin soon, especially since I got a call from my son’s soccer coach yesterday and practice starts tomorrow.  I’m excited to get back to watching him play but wondering how it will be this time around since my family isn’t involved with any of the coaching duties at all and will only be spectators.  With my father-in-law’s recently diagnosed condition, we made the decision that coaching soccer was just not an option this year.  My son also decided he wanted to waver up to a new league with kids that closer to his age and grade.  (Our county sets July 31 as the cut off to determine what age league kids should be placed in and my son’s September birthday always puts him with younger kids and he’s over it now that he’s about to go to middle school, lol.)  Anyway, lots of new things to expect this season.

Aside from that, it was all work and not much play for me.  I had to work yesterday so I didn’t get to participate in any of the marches, but wow, it was so incredible to see on TV.  When I left work yesterday, I saw that we even had a march going on here.  I was so touched by what I saw that I cried all the way home from work, lol.  The newspaper is estimating the crowd size at around 400 people but in my gun-loving town, that is incredible.  Those students have really started a movement!

I got a fair amount of reading done this week in spite of my busy work schedule. I devoured The Woman in the Window and I Was Anastasia and hope to finish up The Room on Rue Amelie today, although this one has been somewhat of a struggle for me so far.  It’s a WWII historical fiction but even though the blurb says fans of The Nightingale and The Lilac Girls should love it, I don’t think it has the same vibe as those two books.  It feels more like a romance novel with WWII as a backdrop rather than focusing on the war itself.  I still have a ways to go so I’m hoping that will change but so far I’m a little underwhelmed.

I think that’s it for me for now.  I hope everyone has a wonderful week!

Boo, more snow. I feel ya though. I am hoping spring does decide to show up here soon. Hope your son has a great season in soccer. I have The Room on Rue Amelie coming up to read, and now I am little leery. 🙁 Hope you have a great week ahead!

I hope you’ll enjoy The Room on Rue Amelie. I’m continuing with my read of it today and hit a good patch that was focused more on resistance efforts during the war instead of romance and I started to enjoy it more.

Hope your daughter enjoys soccer this season. I’m really hoping that it warms up in time for the games since it’s still so chilly right now.

Love that “reality” cartoon at the end. So true! That’s awesome your town had so many people march yesterday; 400 is a big number for a town that really loves guns, like you said.

I’m sure your son will be happy to play soccer with kids around his age! 🙂 I’m so ready for all the snow to go away too. We didn’t get TONS, but it still snowed a bit yesterday and now this week will be a lot of rain I think. Sigh.

Yes, I was really pleased to see such a big turnout. I think most people have finally decided enough is enough when it comes to our kids and their safety.

I can’t wait for winter to be over! I mean technically it IS over like you said, but I was not interested in the two feet of snow we just got! No thank you! I need some good June weather. 😮

I need to read The Belles! I met Dhonielle earlier this month – she is so cool. The Belles seems like an awesome book. I hope you enjoy your two new books!

Have a great week, Suzanne. =)

Winter is like I’m staying and you’re gonna love me…..ugh. I like the reality cartoon and Starry Eyes has such a pretty cover. It’s one I want to read. The march was amazing and so powerful to see.

The march really was amazing. Whether you agree with them or not, it was incredible to see so many young people inspired to get out there.

That The Belles cover is fire. This is the second or third blog I’ve seen referencing Starry Eyes … hmmm you guys may be on to something.

The Belles cover really is beautiful. I’m reading the book now and sometimes I just sit and stare at the cover because it’s so stunning.

It is inspiring when there are marches even in the gun- friendly areas, because sometimes people are intimidated about speaking out in those areas. We live in a pretty conservative area and there’s probably not a lot of sympathy for gun control (overall- I mean there’s always variation) but even here there have been rumblings.

Looking forward to your thoughts on the woman in the Window and Let Me Lie. And I loved Dark MAtter!

    Have a super week!

I really enjoyed The Woman in the Window. Literally could not put it down and was actually reading it under the covers trying not to wake the hubby, lol.

All the way over in the UK, and with you on the sentiments for winter – we’re currently being predicted snow for Easter; I don’t even want to think about it!

Looks like some good review titles coming up. I hope you enjoy your current reads & a lovely week to you.

It’s so encouraging and inspiring to see students getting involved and taking a stand. Enough with the talk of this generation’s “apathetic youth.” I hope you’re enjoying Starry Eyes. I just started Alex, Approximately and am enjoying it so far.

That is a terrible amount of snow, I’m sorry. I’m wondering if you’ll have a sweltering summer then! I completely forgot that the march was happening but the turnout was super impressive.

I hope you love The Belles!

Good luck to your son with soccer this season! Hopefully the transition to playing with kids closer to his age will go smoothly. I’m sure it will. 🙂

I was unable to march as well, although my mom and aunt went to their local one. I lived vicariously thought them.

Sounds like you’ve read some great books lately. I’ll keep your warning about The Room on Rue Amelie in mind when I read it, so my expectations stay in check.

I hope you have a great week, Suzanne!

Thanks! His first practice went very well. He thought he was only going to know 1 boy on the team, but it turns out he knew 5 so he was super excited.

The Room on Rue Amelie actually got much better for me after I posted about it on Sunday. I haven’t reviewed it yet but ended up giving it 4 stars because the second half of the book was so good.

Thanks, hope you have a great week too!

I added Starry Eyes to my TBR because of your glowing review so I really can’t wait to read it. I’ve not read a Mackintosh book yet but I keep hearing great things. My sister is a big fan.

We had wonderful weather this past week in Colorado, upper 60’s. My Spring bulbs have already started to bloom and tonight it snows, hopefully they will be okay. I listened to Dark Matter on audio about six months ago, and it wasn’t what I expected, it was different. I hope you enjoy it. I really want to read Woman in the Window, hopefully soon. Love the cartoon. Enjoy your week.

Hopefully the soccer will go well despite the changes! I see you’re reading Dark Matter. I’ve heard a lot of great things about that one, and I will prob have to give it a read at some point! Love the picture of the girl running from reality lol.

I’m hoping to start Dark Matter tomorrow. I keep hearing great things about it, so I’m hoping I’ll enjoy it since I’m finishing a book now that I have really mixed feelings about.

UGH yes that snow here in the north east is driving me craaaaazyyy lol OH YOU ARE A SOCCER MOM / COACH TOO SUZANNE! YAY!! we have so much in common! I love that there is SO MUCH soccer on this post! Sorry to hear about your father-in-law’s condition and that you guys had to stopped coaching. 🙁

I stopped coaching about a year and a half ago and I have to say I really enjoyed just being an spectator! BUT sometimes I miss coaching a lot too! 🙂 Oh sorry I think I’m confused [doesn’t take much lol]… I would think that if your son is a September birthday that would mean the opposite? He would be younger than most? That’s the case for my daughter who is a fall birthday as well. I’ll read it again!

My son is starting middle middle school next year too! So, yes! we are looking at many changes both school and sports wise 🙂

I feel very touched with the student movement as well!

    • Suzanne
      Suzanne says:

Lol, sorry for the confusion. The cutoff for age determination for our soccer leagues is July 31 and his birthday isn’t until September. He won’t turn 11 until then but most of his friends in the same grade will have turned 11 before that July 31 cutoff. That means unless he sign a waiver saying he can play up a league, he gets stuck playing with kids who are younger. Hopefully that makes sense, lol.

      • Daniela Ark
        Daniela Ark says:

lol I knew I was going to get it! Even though you did Say the cutoff was in summer I kept thinking in terms of calendar year which is how the leagues we belong too work! I thought US Soccer had forced everyone to change to calendar year. Happy to hear your son’s league didn’t. I like it much better when they go with the school year. Interesting they make sign a wavier to play up!

Yes, I picked up The Way You Make Me Feel on Netgalley. If I’m remembering correctly, it was one of those emails where it was offered as a Read Now for the first 250 people or something like that.

The weather doesn’t seem to want to let up this side of the Atlantic, either… I recall when my son was seriously into soccer and I hope that you have a bit more play and less work in your life this coming week. Sorry I’m so behind with all my comments!
