Weekly Recap #41: Week of 2/18 – 2/24

It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

So, for those who read last week’s post, you know I mentioned I’ve been experiencing some pretty awful headaches the past few weeks. Well, I went to the doctor to see if I could get some answers as to a possible cause.  After hearing me describe what I was feeling, she decided to send me for a head CT.  That of course freaked me out because it brings to mind so many worst case scenarios and so I scheduled the CT for Thursday afternoon because I didn’t want to wait any longer than necessary.  I got the results yesterday afternoon and the scan thankfully came back normal, although that means I still don’t have any answers to what is causing my head pain, which the doctor diagnosed as migraines with auras.  She gave me a prescription that she says should help with the pain, so we’ll see how that goes and then I think next up will be some bloodwork and/or a neurological consult if the headaches continue.

Thankfully I didn’t experience any headaches this week so I was able to get plenty of reading done again this week in between watching Olympic events on TV.  I finished 4 books and am starting a 5th tonight.  I also watched the U.S. men win the curling gold medal today and although I still can’t say that I 100% understand that sport, it was fascinating to watch.

Now that I’ve finished reading and reviewing most of my March 6th ARCs, I’m starting the first book of the Grishaverse trilogy in hopes of squeezing in one more book from my backlist before the end of the month.   It hasn’t been a great backlist month because of all of those ARCs but I did finally finish that massive Springsteen autobiography that I’ve been sitting on since October 2016.

I had planned to go see Black Panther this weekend too, but the hubby has been in bed all afternoon and says he doesn’t feel well. so I think those plans are probably on hold until next weekend unless he starts feeling a lot better very soon.  I keep hearing great things about the movie so I’m tempted to go without him but I’ll try to be patient and wait, lol.

I think that’s it for me for now.  I hope everyone has a wonderful week!

Ugh, I have nothing but sympathy – this happened to me at the start of 2014 (a cluster of migraines, including auras, and pretty much a permanently sore head in between) after years of having the odd headache and rare (maybe once a year) mild migraine. It’s a shocker! …like you, I got sent for scans and tests and we never did get to the bottom of it, but it turned my life upside down. All I can say is stay positive and keep a diary (food, drink, sleep, and when/how bad your head hurts) and see if you can spot any connections – tedious, but sometimes it helps you spot something. Try changing your lighting too – I found I became really light sensitive, so dialling down the brightness on my screens helped me loads!

Thanks for the suggestions. I did dial down the brightness on all of my screens and that has helped quite a bit. I did that first because I knew I’d be even more miserable if I couldn’t read at all.

My sister was over the moon about the curling medal. It is pretty amazing to see the US achieve that. I can remember a time when we had no clue what curling was. Good news your scan is clear. I hope you are able to get some relief soon.

I really need to figure out all of the rules of that sport. I loved how they would stand around the target area and strategize where they wanted to try to place each rock but the point system, etc. still eludes me a bit. Definitely happy we won the Gold though, especially since it didn’t sound like we should have even really been in the running for it.

That’s good the scan came back fine. I suffer from migraines with aura too. I know how painful and disorienting they can be. Thankfully the last time I had one with aura was over the summer, but the bad part is it hit me when I was about a two hour drive from home at the beach with my youngest, just us two and I had to sit it out and wait for it to pass. Not fun at all especially at the boardwalk when there is nowhere to go for peace and quiet but to your car.
The Springsteen autobiography sounds like a good one, I’m looking forward to your thoughts on it. Enjoy your week!

I’m so glad your scan came back clear and the headaches have gone away for now! And yay for getting lots of reading done! I hope you get to see Black Panther soon, it was so good!

Good that your scan was clear. I suppose the obvious thing to say, and I’m sure you’ve already checked, is your eyes, obviously we all do a lot of reading and if your eyes are struggling then – headaches. My main cause of migraines (and I only experienced a few a year) is mainly to do with hormones. Pretty awful though – and I definitely think that I can be very light sensitive.
    Happy reading next week.

Oh Suzanne! I’m so far behind I had absolutely no idea about your headaches. I’m so, so sorry. They can feel so debilitating can’t they? I have a bit of a problematic neck since an old horse riding accident but at least I know what causes me issues! It’s scary having no idea why you’re getting headaches. I just hope you can find some answers, and not only that, some relief!

Looks like you had a wonderful week in reading and I really hope you have a good week ahead too! I also hope you manage to get to the Grishaverse!

Thanks, I hope I get some answers soon too.

I finished the first book in the Grishaverse trilogy last night and loved it! I’m hoping to read both of the other books in March.

Glad the CT scan went well and also that you had a pretty headache-free week. Just think. maybe some of the crowds will have thinned out when you finally do make it to see Black Panther. Have a great week!

    • Suzanne
      Suzanne says:

That’s what I’m hoping with the crowds. I love going to see a movie when there’s hardly anyone else in the theater besides me, lol. Hope you have a great week too!

    • Suzanne
      Suzanne says:

Thanks, I hope so too. I haven’t had one yet to test it out and see how it works, but on the bright side, at least I haven’t had a headache in a while, lol.

Glad to hear your CT was normal. Those things can be a little nerve wracking for sure! Hopefully your headaches get better/ stay away…

Wow 4 books! You had a great reading week. I’ve been watching the Olympics too, although not quite as much as I did last week. although I’m watching now ha ha. I like having ’em on in the background…

Hope you like Black Panther when you get to it!

    • Suzanne
      Suzanne says:

I think maybe with the exception of the snowboarding, which was just so mindblowing I couldn’t help but watch, most of the time I just had the Olympics on in the background while I did other things, lol.

Thanks! From what I’m hearing, Black Panther lives up to the hype so it should be pretty amazing.

Haha, I make that face at least once a week 🙂
I hope to start The Cruel Prince next week too! I hope you’ll enjoy all the books you got!

LOL. I kind of understand what they’re trying to do but I don’t understand the scoring at all. I just sit there like “Whaaaa?”

Oh, it’s awful when you don’t know what’s quite wrong. I hope the medicine you got will help things though! I still need to see Black Panther as well. Hopefully you got to see it – or can see it soon at least. 🙂

Yay for getting so much reading in. I’m doing pretty well with ARCs so I’m hoping to read more backlist books in March.

I am delighted that they haven’t found anything organic to cause your headaches – but I would echo what others have said in keeping a food diary. Chocolate and red wine are definite triggers for my migraines, but stress is also a major factor – or was… I don’t get them so much these days. I, too, want to get to see Black Panther. Have a better week!

    • Suzanne
      Suzanne says:

Yes, I think the food diary is a great idea. I really hope chocolate and red wine don’t end up being triggers for me. I think I’d be heartbroken, lol.

    Lindsi says:

Sorry about your headaches! I’m sure it makes reading a tad difficult, which always sucks. Hopefully you’ll figure out what’s causing them soon, so they’ll stop.

The Cruel Prince was great! Nice and twisty. I added the other three books to my list! I love their covers.

    Do You Dog-ear?

    • Suzanne
      Suzanne says:

Yes, it does make reading challenging. Thankfully dimming all of my screens seemed to help quite a bit with that part of it. I’m so glad to hear you enjoyed The Cruel Prince. My library loan for it came through much sooner than expected so I plan to start it in a couple of days. 🙂

I’m glad your scan came back clear. At least there is that. I hope the headaches will stay away for you. They are horrible. I had some this past week from the flu and forgetting medication and it was torture.
