Weekly Recap #37: Week of 1/21 – 1/27

It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

Last week was a pretty good week all around. The drama at work has calmed down, and I was able to get a lot of blogging done.  I won’t say that I’m completely caught up, but I feel so much better about where I am right now versus where I was this time last week.  I also liked the feedback that I got from you guys regarding the mini book reviews for older books, so I’ll be trying those for the first time later this week.

I was checking out my progress on my challenges thus far and I’m feeling pretty good about all of those right now too, especially the Beat the Backlist challenge.  I’m reading Our Dark Duet right now, which is my 6th backlist book of the year.   I don’t know if I can maintain that pace long term since I do have quite a few ARCs coming up that I need to read and review first, but considering I only read about 25 backlist books all last year, I’m so stoked to have gotten off to such a good start.

It has also been a productive week for me on the series front. I don’t think I made it an official goal for 2018, but I have also been saying that I really want to finish up some series this year that have been lingering on my TBR for too long.  Well, I’m thrilled to say that I finally finished The Lunar Chronicles this morning and am already nearly halfway through Our Dark Duet so I’ll be finishing up the Monsters of Verity duology in the next few days too.  And because I’m on a roll, I also finished Nevernight too so now I just have to read Godsgrave to be all caught up in time for the third book in that series.

It wasn’t all reading for me this week either.  I also binge watched Season 4 of Grace and Frankie on Netflix.  Man, I love that show so much! I’m ready for season 5 already, which is the worst part about binge watching a series. You then have to wait FOREVER for more new episodes, lol. And with the news that Meryl Streep will be joining the cast for season 2, I also started watching Big Little Lies on HBO.  I’m only a couple of episodes in, but I’m completely hooked, which is kind of funny because I wasn’t the biggest fan of the book the series is based on.  It was just an okay read for me.

I think that’s it for me for now.  I hope everyone has a wonderful week!

Your week sounds like a good one. I’m gonna have to check out Grace and Frankie, I keep seeing it while surfing on Netflix. Enjoy the new book, Baby Teeth sounds like it is going to be a good one.

I’m finishing This Savage Song today so also reading Our Dark Due this week!! Can’t wait to chat about it! Can’t wait to get to Nevernight either! And… Isn’t The Lunar Chronicles so awesome??? Can’t wait for your review of Winter!

Glad to hear the drama at work is calming down and that your are doing well with your challenges.

Our Dark Duet is sooo good. I just started it yesterday and am already on page 300. Can’t put it down!

And yes, even though I’m excited to have finally finished the series, part of me is sad to be done with The Lunar Chronicles. I loved all of those characters so much!

I know what you mean about binge watching and then having to wait for the next season…lol. It sounds like you are off to a great reading start this year! Enjoy your week.

I loved the ending for The Lunar Chronicles, although now that I’m finally finished with the series, I’m kind of sad to say goodbye to those characters. I really loved them all.

I can’t wait to see Meryl Streep in BLL. She’s going to be amazing!

That’s the bad thing about Netflix – you can watch a whole series in a weekend, and then you have to wait a year for the next season! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on Every Note Played – I’ve enjoyed Genova’s books in the past.

Right? I have way too many series that I’ve binge watched and am now twiddling my thumbs waiting for new episodes. Thanks, so far I’ve only read Still Alice from Genova but I loved that book so I’m hoping I’ll enjoy this one too.

I LOVE Dean Koontz but have not started his Jane Hawk series yet! I have added a bunch of books this week. I am currently reading Dead Lemon by Finn Bell a thriller and I really like it. Awesome collection this week!

Have a great week of reading!

Sounds like you had a really good week. I’m horrible about keeping up with a series. There are so many series that I started and enjoyed, but lost touch with over the years. It’s just so hard when so many great sounding books are always coming out.

Exactly, lol. I have so many series that I’m part way through. I’m really trying to make an effort this year to finish/get caught up on as many of them as I can.

You are killing your challenges. I am happy with my Throwback/Backlist progress. 13/31 this month were older books. My goal was about 50% of my reading. So, yay! I am jealous of your series progress. I am trash with that. Glad to hear work is settling down. Have a fantastic week.

Yes, I don’t know how long I can keep up the pace I’m going, but I’m really happy with how it’s going so far. That’s amazing that you’ve already read 13 backlist books!

I can understand the feeling of getting backlogged and needing to catch up. I’m also doing some mini reviews for books that I receive that are previews of the book. Binge watching and having to wait for a series to finish is how I feel about Game of Thrones…April 2019!
    Have a great week.

I am glad you had a better week, Suzanne. I’m making progress on my series goal too, although not quite the way I had planned it. I’m still pretty happy about the progress I am making. It sounds like you are doing well in that front and with your Backlist challenge! I was looking at the new Lisa Genova book the other day, but ended up decided not to request it. I enjoy her books, but have too much on my plate right now. I hope you enjoy all your new books! Have a great week, Suzanne!

Still Alice is the only book I’ve read by Genova so far and that just had me sobbing so hopefully I’ll enjoy her next book as well.

I’m glad it was a productive week for you! OMG I still need to read Our Dark Duet. I loved This Savage Song. I feel like I keep seeing shocked reactions in terms of ODD’s ending? I’m a little scared to read the book but I’ll probably read it at some point. ANYWAY I hope you enjoy all of your new books, Suzanne!

    Have a lovely week. =)

That’s awesome you’re getting through some series. That’s something I really hope to do this year too. Winter is one I need to read ASAP. I’ve had it since it came out after all. LOL

Finishing The Lunar Chronicles is on my list this year. I’ve had it on my shelf for a while so I really want to finish it. Yay! for reading so many backlists already. I’ve mainly read backlist this month too but I have some ARCs to get to so I need to find a way to balance both. I hope you have a wonderful week!

    • Suzanne
      Suzanne says:

Winter is such a great ending to The Lunar Chronicles. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I’ve got to abandon my backlist reading and get through a few ARCs now too, which is kind of a bummer since I was really on a roll, lol.

I actually just started trying mini reviews for the older books I read this week. I tend to write long reviews, so for time saving purposes, I’m going to save the long reviews for 2018 releases and do minis for my backlist.
