Weekly Recap #18: Week of 9/10-9/16

Hey everyone!  It’s time for another weekly recap post of all things happening on and off the blog. This week I’ll be linking to the Sunday Post, which is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer and to Stacking the Shelves, which is hosted by Tynga’s Reviews.

I’m happy to report that my son and I have started to slip back into our school routine so the second week of school was much calmer than the first.  He loves his teacher this year too, which is helping with that a lot.  Last year he did not like his teacher at all and fought me on going to school on a regular basis.  Hopefully my luck will continue on that front!

My soccer mom duties also kicked into full swing this past week.  We had our first three games of the season so evenings and weekends have been jam-packed with running to games and practices.  We’re now 3-0 though so that’s exciting. My son is also playing more offense than defense this season, so he’s also happier with soccer than he has been in a while.  He hasn’t scored a goal yet but he did take three shots on goals in Saturday’s game so he’s getting close to scoring.  (Insert proud mom cheers!)

Real life made it a little difficult to get reading and blogging done this past week, so for the first time in a while, I only posted one review.  That was kind of a bummer since I’d been doing so well about posting at least 2 for so long.  That said, today and the upcoming week will involve writing a lot of reviews to get myself caught back up again.  I also got bogged down reading a book that ended up not being a great read so that didn’t help with momentum, The Blackbird Season by Kate Moretti.  I probably should have just DNFed it and moved on, but it was one of those books where the mystery was just good enough that I wanted to find out what really happened and who was responsible.  I’m hoping for some better reads this week as I’ll be starting All the Crooked Saints by Maggie Stiefvater today and then moving on to Alice Hoffman’s The Rules of Magic, and then hopefully to Nic Stone’s Dear Martin, which I’ve heard nothing but great things about.

This also seems to have been a huge week for accumulating books.  I can’t remember the last time I picked up so many new books in the same week.  A lot of them are from Netgalley, so needless to say my 80% review rate just took a nosedive, haha!  I’m looking forward to reading all of them though so yay for new books!

I think that’s it for me.  Have a great week, everyone!

It’s always tough when your kids have a conflict with the teacher, especially when they are younger and cannot advocate for themselves. Glad to hear this year looks like it will be better than the last. I keep hearing raves about Starfish. Can’t wait to see what you think. Enjoy all your new books.

It really is tough and my son is the type that if he doesn’t like the teacher, he won’t perform as well as he otherwise would have. Definitely hoping for a better year in that sense.

      Have a great week!

I can’t wait to read it. I’ve devoured every excerpt I’ve seen floating around on the internet. I have a couple of ARCS I need to knock out first and then I plan to dive in.

I started reading the new Alice Hoffman last night and so far I think it’s wonderful. I just love the way she writes.

Yes, exactly. And my son is the type who will choose not to perform if he doesn’t like his teacher. Like he somehow thinks he’s punishing her if he doesn’t do the work. He found out the hard way last year when his midterm grades came out that he was really punishing himself and had to work hard to bring those grades back up.

I am glad you son likes his teacher this year. That can make all the difference. Congratulations on your son’s soccer team doing so well! Yesterday I watched from the sidelines as my daughter watched the ball go right by her–to the point where she could easily have blocked it and kicked it by moving just an inch–then turned slightly, and watched it go into the goal she was defending. She felt bad about it after (more so, I think, because a couple of her teammates got on her about it). That’s my daughter for you though. LOL She insisted on playing again this year, but she definitely isn’t in it for the sport itself.

I need to do some serious review writing this week as well. Hopefully I can find the time. I am sorry the The Blackbird Season was such a struggle. That’s one I’ve really been wanting to read. I hope you enjoy your new books! I’m looking forward to listening to Warbringer.

The cartoon you shared made me laugh. That is so my daughter!

    Have a great week, Suzanne!

Yay for soccer and a good second week of school. 🙂 Interesting to hear that Blackbird Season wasn’t a winner for you, as I was just reading that blurb a while ago and wondering about it. Guess I better see a few reviews before I pull the trigger on that one. Good to know.

    DEpth of Lies looks good.

Yeah, unfortunately it wasn’t the greatest fit for me. I’ve read plenty of other reviews where people loved it though, so I think it’s just another case of me not liking a book where I didn’t feel at all invested the characters.

Yay for your son loving school and having a good teacher this year – it makes a big difference. I’m glad that soccer is going well too!

I’m trying to keep up on reviewing books; it’s difficult!! lol

It really is to keep up with reviews sometimes. I get in those moods where I just want to keep reading instead of stopping to write anything, lol.

Wow, so glad your son did well getting back to school and what a relief about the teacher! I hope your luck held this week!

You got Wonder Woman! That’s probably my next purchase after I finish reading Tower of Dawn (and a couple of arcs!).I can’t wait to hear your thoughts.

Hope you had a great week and will catch up more on tomorrow’s post!

Yeah, he clashed with his teacher so much last year so I’m thrilled that he seems to really like his new teacher. He hasn’t come home complaining about school yet, which is a lovely change from last year when he complained almost every single day.

I’m hoping to get to Wonder Woman sometime in the next couple of weeks. I do have some ARCs to get to, but I just can’t hold out for long since Wonder Woman is a childhood favorite, lol.
