Can’t Wait Wednesday – NOT YOUR EX’S HEXES by April Asher

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, which encourages fellow bloggers to spotlight upcoming releases that we’re excited about.  It is a meme that I have  loved participating in since I first started blogging, but as Jill is no longer actively posting, from now on I’ll be linking to Can’t Wait Wednesday, hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings, which is a spinoff of the original WoW meme.

My selection for this week is NOT YOUR EX’S HEXES by April Asher. I’m finding myself still in the mood for witchy reads today so I’m sharing another fun one that will be coming out early next year.

NOT YOUR EX’S HEXES by April Asher

Publication Date:  February 7, 2023 by St. Martin’s Press/St. Martin’s Griffin

From Netgalley:

In April Asher’s next Supernatural Singles novel, Not Your Ex’s Hexes, a one-night-stand between a willful witch and a broody half-demon conjures an adventure that wouldn’t be complete without several magical mishaps.

For her entire life, Rose Maxwell trained to become the next Prima on the Supernatural Council. Now that she’s stepped down, it’s time for this witch to focus on herself. And not think about her impulsive one-night stand with Damian Adams, a half-Demon Veterinarian who she can’t get out of her head. Neither of them is looking for a relationship. But when Rose is sentenced to community service at Damian’s animal sanctuary it becomes impossible for them to ignore their sparking attraction. A friends-with-benefits, no feelings, no strings arrangement works perfectly for them both.

After a sequence of dead-end jobs, it’s not until Rose tangos with two snarly demons that she thinks she’s finally found her path. However, this puts Damian back on the periphery of a world he thought he left behind. He doesn’t approve of Rose becoming a Hunter, but if there’s one thing he’s learned about the stubborn witch, it was telling her not to do something was one sure-fire way to make sure she did.

Working—and sleeping—together awakens feelings Damian never knew he had…and shouldn’t have. Because thanks to his ex’s hex, if he falls in love, he’ll not only lose his heart—but his humanity.

Top Ten Tuesday – 10 Not So Scary Movies & TV Shows I Love to Watch during Spooky Season

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is a Halloween Freebie, so since I’ve already shared some spooky season books in a previous TTT post this year, I decided it would be fun to share some of my favorite things to watch during spooky season.  Now I’m a big chicken, so please keep that in mind as you peruse my list.  You won’t find any Freddy Kreugers or chainsaw-wielding Jasons on there!  My Halloween tastes lean toward the fun, silly, fantastical, and only slightly spooky variety.  Who knows if the clips will actually play or not by the time this post goes live, but I’ve tried to share the official trailers for each of these in case, by some chance, you haven’t seen them before.

10 Not So Scary Movies & TV Shows

Apologies for my absence since this time last week.  I had a huge work deadline that left me with no time or energy to blog, but I made my deadline and then took a day to recover so now I’m back.  My selection for this week is THE PLUS ONE by Mazey Eddings, the third book in Eddings’ A Brush with Love series.  I loved the first two books in the series and this one sounds just as entertaining as those two were.

THE PLUS ONE by Mazey Eddings

Publication Date:  April 4, 2023 by Berkley Books

From Goodreads:

What starts out as a fake wedding date turns into something these childhood enemies never expected in the next sparkling romantic comedy by Mazey Eddings.

Some facts are indisputable. The sun rises in the east, sets in the west. Gravity exits. Indira doesn’t like Jude. Jude doesn’t like Indira. But what happens when these childhood enemies find the only thing they can rely on is each other?

On paper, Indira has everything together. An amazing job, a boyfriend, and a car. What more could a late twenty-something ask for? But when she walks in on her boyfriend in an amorous embrace with a stranger, that perfect on paper image goes up in flames.

Jude has nothing together. A doctor that’s spent the last three years traveling the world to treat emergencies and humanitarian crises, a quick trip home for his best friend’s wedding has him struggling to readjust.

Thrust into an elaborate (and ridiculously drawn out) wedding event that’s stressing Jude beyond belief and has Indira seeing her ex and his new girlfriend far more frequently than any human should endure, the duo strike a bargain to be each other’s fake dates to this wedding from hell. The only problem is, their forced proximity and fake displays of affection are starting to feel a bit… real, and both are left grappling with the idea that a situation that couldn’t be worse, is made a little better with the other around.

Can’t Wait Wednesday – A WITCH’S GUIDE TO FAKE DATING A DEMON by Sarah Hawley

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, which encourages fellow bloggers to spotlight upcoming releases that we’re excited about.  It is a meme that I have  loved participating in since I first started blogging, but as Jill is no longer actively posting, from now on I’ll be linking to Can’t Wait Wednesday, hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings, which is a spinoff of the original WoW meme.

* * * * *

My selection for this week is A Witch’s Guide to Fake Dating a Demon by Sarah Hawley.  I’m always on the lookout for witchy reads and this one just sounds like such a fun one.  Too bad we have to wait until March to read it because it would be perfect for right now during spooky season.

A WITCH’S GUIDE TO FAKE DATING A DEMON by Sarah Hawley

Publication Date:  March 7, 2023 by Berkley Books

From Goodreads:

Mariel Spark knows not to trust a demon, especially one that wants her soul, but what’s a witch to do when he won’t leave her side—and she kind of doesn’t want him to?

Mariel Spark is prophesied to be the most powerful witch seen in centuries of the famed Spark family, but to the displeasure of her mother, she prefers baking to brewing potions and gardening to casting hexes. When a spell to summon flour goes very wrong, Mariel finds herself staring down a demon—one she inadvertently summoned for a soul bargain.

Ozroth the Ruthless is a legend among demons. Powerful and merciless, he drives hard bargains to collect mortal souls. But his reputation has suffered ever since a bargain went awry—if he can strike a bargain with Mariel, he will earn back his deadly reputation. Ozroth can’t leave Mariel’s side until they complete a bargain, which she refuses to do (turns out some humans are attached to their souls).

But the witch is funny. And curvy. And disgustingly yet endearingly cheerful. Becoming awkward roommates quickly escalates when Mariel, terrified to confess the inadvertent summoning to her mother, blurts out that she’s dating Ozroth. As Ozroth and Mariel struggle with their opposing goals and maintaining a fake relationship, real attraction blooms between them. But Ozroth has a limited amount of time to strike the deal, and if Mariel gives up her soul, she’ll lose all her emotions—including love—which will only spell disaster for them both.

Top Ten Tuesday – 10 Books That are Perfect for Spooky Season

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is actually supposed to be Books I Read On Vacation.  I haven’t really taken a vacation any time recently and I’m pretty sure I didn’t read much the last time I did, so I decided to go rogue this week and share some spooky season book recommendations instead. Now I don’t really read actual horror because I’m a big chicken, so if you’re looking for truly terrifying reads, you’ll have to look elsewhere.  Aside from that, I think I have a pretty good variety here.

10 Books That are Perfect for Spooky Season

1. THE EX HEX by Erin Sterling  –  “New York Times bestselling author Rachel Hawkins, writing as Erin Sterling, casts a spell with a spine-tingling romance full of wishes, witches, and hexes gone wrong..” This is a fun witchy rom-com that features the second chance romance and enemies to lovers tropes.

2. THE KISS CURSE by Erin Sterling  – “This follow-up to The Ex Hex features fan favorite Gwyn and the spine-tinglingly handsome Wells Penhallow as they battle a new band of witches and their own magical chemistry. When their professional competition leads to a very personal—and very hot—kiss, both Wells and Gwyn are determined to stay away from each other, convinced the kiss was just a magical fluke. But when a mysterious new coven of witches come to town and Gwyn’s powers begin fading, she and Wells must work together to figure out just what these new witches want and how to restore Gwyn’s magic before it’s too late.”  I’m reading this one right now and loving it even more than the first book in the series!

3. THE VERY SECRET SOCIETY OF IRREGULAR WITCHES by Sangu Mandanna – “A warm and uplifting novel about an isolated witch whose opportunity to embrace a quirky new family–and a new love–changes the course of her life..” I reviewed this one on the blog a few weeks ago and just adored everything about it.

4. THE ONCE AND FUTURE WITCHES by Alix E. Harrow  – This is a wonderful story about sisterhood and suffragist witches who are determined to reclaim the power that men have historically denied them.

5. WILD IS THE WITCH by Rachel Griffin – “When eighteen-year-old witch Iris Gray accidentally enacts a curse that could have dire consequences, she must team up with a boy who hates witches to make sure her magic isn’t unleashed on the world.” Loved the haunting and atmospheric writing in this one and that the magic is so steeped in nature.

6. SPELLS FOR FORGETTING by Adrienne Young – “A deeply atmospheric story about ancestral magic, an unsolved murder, and a second chance at true love.”

7. YOU’LL BE THE DEATH OF ME by Karen McManus  –  “From the author of One of Us Is Lying comes a brand-new pulse-pounding thriller. It’s Ferris Bueller’s Day Off with murder when three old friends relive an epic ditch day, and it goes horribly–and fatally–wrong.”  Honestly, if you enjoy YA thrillers, any of McManus’ novels are great choices for spooky season. I read this one over this past weekend and couldn’t put it down.

8. IN MY DREAMS I HOLD A KNIFE by Ashley Winstead – “A college reunion turns dark and deadly in this chilling and propulsive suspense novel about six friends, one unsolved murder, and the dark secrets they’ve been hiding from each other—and themselves—for a decade.”  Another thriller that I devoured this weekend.  If you enjoy dark academia, this is a great choice. It kept me guessing from beginning to end.

9. SIGN HERE by Claudia Lux  –  “A darkly humorous, surprisingly poignant, and utterly gripping debut novel about a guy who works in Hell (literally) and is on the cusp of a big promotion if only he can get one more member of the wealthy Harrison family to sell their soul..” This was my October Book of the Month pick and my current read and I’m loving the dark humor so much!

10. EMPIRE OF THE VAMPIRE by Jay Kristoff – “Gabriel de León is a silversaint: a member of a holy brotherhood dedicated to defending realm and church from the creatures of the night. But even the Silver Order couldn’t stem the tide once daylight failed us, and now, only Gabriel remains. Imprisoned by the very monsters he vowed to destroy, the last silversaint is forced to tell his story. A story of legendary battles and forbidden love, of faith lost and friendships won, of the Wars of the Blood and the Forever King and the quest for humanity’s last remaining hope: The Holy Grail.”  This is a brick of a book at 739 pages, but I flew through it in 3 days.  It’s a dark read, often gory and violent, definitely not for kids, but it’s also filled with tremendous emotion and passion as the last silversaint shares his often painful story.

Can’t Wait Wednesday – THE TRUE LOVE EXPERIMENT by Christina Lauren

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, which encourages fellow bloggers to spotlight upcoming releases that we’re excited about.  It is a meme that I have  loved participating in since I first started blogging, but as Jill is no longer actively posting, from now on I’ll be linking to Can’t Wait Wednesday, hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings, which is a spinoff of the original WoW meme.

* * * * *

My selection for this week is THE TRUE LOVE EXPERIMENT by Christina Lauren.  Back when I read Christina Lauren’s The Soulmate Equation, I adored the secondary character of Fizzy.  She was such a fun character and I said then that I hoped CLo would give her her own book at some point.  Well, lo and behold, they did and I’m so here for it!

THE TRUE LOVE EXPERIMENT by Christina Lauren

Publication Date:  May 16, 2023 by Gallery Books

From Goodreads:

Sparks fly when a romance novelist and a documentary filmmaker join forces to craft the perfect Hollywood love story and take both of their careers to the next level—but only if they can keep the chemistry between them from taking the whole thing off script—from the New York Times bestselling authors of The Soulmate Equation and The Unhoneymooners.

Felicity “Fizzy” Chen is lost. Sure, she’s got an incredible career as a beloved romance novelist with a slew of bestsellers under her belt, but when she’s asked to give a commencement address, it hits her: she hasn’t been practicing what she’s preached.

Fizzy hasn’t ever really been in love. Lust? Definitely. But that swoon-worthy, can’t-stop-thinking-about-him, all-encompassing feeling? Nope. Nothing. What happens when the optimism she’s spent her career encouraging in readers starts to feel like a lie?

Connor Prince, documentary filmmaker and single father, loves his work in large part because it allows him to live near his daughter. But when his profit-minded boss orders him to create a reality TV show, putting his job on the line, Connor is out of his element. Desperate to find his romantic lead, a chance run-in with an exasperated Fizzy offers Connor the perfect solution. What if he could show the queen of romance herself falling head-over-heels for all the world to see? Fizzy gives him a hard pass—unless he agrees to cast the contestants according to a list of romance archetypes. When he says yes, and production on The True Love Experiment begins, Connor wonders if that perfect match will ever be in the cue cards for him, too.

The True Love Experiment is the book fans have been waiting for ever since Fizzy’s debut in the New York Times bestselling The Soulmate Equation. But when the lights come on and all eyes are on her, it turns out the happily ever after Fizzy had all but given up on might lie just behind the camera.

Top Ten Tuesday – 5 Indie Book Stores I Love & 5 I Really Want to Visit

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is Favorite Bookstores OR Bookstores I’d Love to Visit.  I decided to focus my list on Indie bookstores but couldn’t think of 10 I loved or 10 I wanted to visit, so I’ve split my list in half to share 5 of each.

* * * * *

5 Bookstores I Love

1. The Strand, NYC

The Strand will always make my list of favorite Indie bookstores. I try to stop by every time I visit NYC.

Why?  18 miles of books, some of the coolest bookish merchandise, and loads of amazing author events.

* * * * *

2. Fountain Bookstore, Richmond, VA

Credit:  https://www.instagram.com/fountainbookstore/

If you ever find yourself in the Richmond, VA area, I highly recommend stopping by Fountain Bookstore in the quaint and quirky Carytown area. They have a great selection of books and merchandise, signed books, tons of staff recommendations which are always reliably good reads, and they also have a full schedule of author events.

* * * * *

3. Riverby Books, Fredericksburg, VA

This is a fantastic Indie bookstore right in my own town.  The shop has an extensive collection of used books, they buy and sell rare books, and the store is just super cute with lots of little reading nooks tucked into every corner.

* * * * *

4. Green Valley Book Fair, Mount Crawford, VA

The Green Valley Book Fair is tucked away in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley.  Prior to the Covid pandemic, for a couple of weeks, 5 or 6 times a year, the book fair would open and book lovers would come from all over to purchase deeply discounted books.  Their selection has always been vast and the prices great.  Where so many businesses failed during the pandemic, the Green Valley Book Fair completely changed the way they operated in order to survive.  Since everything was closed, they started a mail order business so that book lovers could still get the discounted books they love and they even expanded their inventory to include items like jigsaw puzzles for those who Covid kept at home.  Once things started to open back up, they began to open year round 5 days a week, and continued to offer their mail service as well as curbside pickup.  I love this bookfair, both for its great prices and extensive selection, but also because of their resilience and determination.

* * * * *

5. CHOP SUEY BOOKS, Richmond, VA

Chop Suey Books is another fantastic bookstore in the Carytown area of Richmond. They have a fun, quirky storefront, a cat mascot named Wonton, and they buy and sell used books.

* * * * *

5 Bookstores I Really Want to Visit

6. THE BOOKWORM BOX Bookstore, Sulphur Springs, TX

This is the bookstore that Colleen Hoover and her sisters own.  Enough said, lol. Not enough?  Here’s a little more detail:  “The Bookworm Box is a one-of-a-kind specialty bookstore with signed books donated by the authors. All profit is donated to various charities with over $1,000,000.00 donated since opening the doors in 2015. The Bookworm Box holds special events and exclusive signings with best-selling authors such as EL James, Tarryn Fisher, Anna Todd, Caroline Kepnes and Colleen Hoover.”

* * * * *

7. BLUEBIRD & CO., Crozet, VA

Even though this book shop is only about an hour away from me, I had never heard of it until Elle Cosimano happened to mention on her social media a while back that she was doing an event there.  I unfortunately couldn’t attend the event, but looking at their instagram page, the store is just as adorable on the inside as it is on the outside so I need to visit it someday soon.

* * * * *

8. POWELL’S BOOKS, Portland, OR

According to their website, Powell’s is the World’s Largest Independent Bookstore.  I have no idea if that is still true or not, but it’s enough to make me want to visit it.  They apparently have a very extensive inventory of used books and, and they buy and sell books.

* * * * *

9. McNally Jackson Books, NYC

Even though I visit NYC pretty often, I’ve somehow never made it to this shop and I need to remedy that. It just looks so cozy and quaint and apparently it has a nice cafe in it as well.

* * * * *

10. NEW DOMINION BOOKSHOP, Charlottesville, VA

This is yet another Indie bookshop that is only about an hour from me but I’ve yet to make it there.  New Dominion is the oldest independent bookstore in my state and the picture I chose to represent it features the stunning rose garden they have.  Some of the other photos on their Instagram page show bookclubs meeting in the garden as well as some author events.  It just looks so lovely and peaceful and I would love to experience it in person.

* * * * *

Question:  Have you visited any of these shops?

Can’t Wait Wednesday – THE GOLDEN DOVES by Martha Hall Kelly

“Waiting On” Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, which encourages fellow bloggers to spotlight upcoming releases that we’re excited about.  It is a meme that I have  loved participating in since I first started blogging, but as Jill is no longer actively posting, from now on I’ll be linking to Can’t Wait Wednesday, hosted by Tressa at Wishful Endings, which is a spinoff of the original WoW meme.

* * * * *

My selection for this week is THE GOLDEN DOVES by Martha Hall Kelly.  I was a big fan of Kelly’s Lilac Girls, a moving historical fiction series, which traced three generations of women from one family from WWII all the way back to the Civil War, so I’m very excited to get my hands on this new book, which promises to be a powerful read about female spies hunting fugitive Nazi doctors.

THE GOLDEN DOVES by Martha Hall Kelly

Publication Date:  April 18, 2023 by Ballantine Books

From Goodreads:

Two former female spies, bound together by their past, risk everything to hunt down an infamous Nazi doctor in the aftermath of World War II—an extraordinary novel inspired by true events from the New York Times bestselling author of Lilac Girls

American Josie Anderson and Parisian Arlette LaRue are thrilled to be working in the French resistance, stealing so many Nazi secrets that they become known as the Golden Doves, renowned across France and hunted by the Gestapo. Their courage will cost them everything. When they are finally arrested and taken to the Ravensbrück concentration camp, along with their loved ones, a reclusive Nazi doctor does unspeakable things to Josie’s mother, a celebrated Jewish singer who joined her daughter in Paris when the world seemed bright. And Arlette’s son is stolen from her, never to be seen again.

A decade later the Doves fall headlong into a dangerous dual mission: Josie is working for U.S. Army intelligence and accepts an assignment to hunt down the infamous doctor, while a mysterious man tells Arlette he may have found her son. The Golden Doves embark on a quest across Europe and ultimately to French Guiana, discovering a web of terrible secrets, and must put themselves in grave danger to finally secure justice and protect the ones they love.

Martha Hall Kelly has garnered acclaim for her stunning combination of empathy and research into the stories of women throughout history and for exploring the terrors of Ravensbrück. With The Golden Doves, she has crafted an unforgettable story about the fates of Nazi fugitives in the wake of World War II—and the unsung females spies who risked it all to bring them to justice.

Top Ten Tuesday – 10 Book Covers That Feature Typography I Like

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.  Top Ten Tuesday has been one of my favorite memes ever since I started blogging, so huge thanks to Jana for taking over the hosting duties!

This week’s TTT topic is Typographic Book Covers (Book covers with a design that is all or mostly all words. You can also choose to do books with nice typography if that’s easier!).  I’m not even going to lie; this topic really threw me for a loop even with the definition of a typographic book cover supplied for us.  For the longest time I couldn’t think of a single title that fit the description and even now I’m not convinced that most of these do but we’re just going to pretend I did a great job with this topic, okay? Haha!
